Chris Priest really revs up the fourth wall banter, and the general all round humour with great guest spots, but the lack of Kelly's style of using angst and tragedy, leaves this run without a heart, I read the comic books Deadpool season one: #34-45 and Deadpool Almost Destroys the Marvel Universe. 6 out of 12 Three Stars.

Oof. Where to start with this thing? It seems like we owe Christopher Priest for a ton of the persistent problems Deadpool books suffer from to this very day. To be fair, Priest was following Joe Kelly, the man who made Deadpool a character worth reading, who humanized an insane cartoon character to a point where we actually cared about him. Priest had some pretty big shoes to fill, but I wish he hadn't filled them with piles of shit.

First of all, this is Ground Zero for Deadpool "knowing" he's a character in a comic book, arguably the worst thing to ever happen to the character, spinning him into a meta disaster that has persisted for years. But the WORST part of that is Priest did it to stroke his own ego. Deadpool starts this piece of trash off by arriving at a trailer park where superheroes who have been "ruined" by Christopher Priest's writing go to die (literally). Priest calls out this fact in a way that I guess is supposed to be self-deprecating and funny, but rather just makes me wonder why a writer of a comic book needs the reader to know that he is a failure? I don't give a shit about Christopher Priest. I give a shit about Deadpool. I don't need a long, woe-is-me diatribe about how Christopher Priest is a bad writer. I have plenty of time to find that out on my own (and boy did I).

Second, this book gave me the impression Priest had never written a joke in his life. Dated references aside, every single joke in this book scrapes the bottom of the barrel so hard it rips it apart. You got your thinly-veiled fart jokes, lame attempts at slice-of-life Seinfeld quips, and incessant "running jokes" that are really just people saying the same non-joke lines over and over again as if repetition itself is hilarious. The number one culprit there is, every single time someone asks Deadpool a question, he responds "The answer to your first question is shaddup." Cool, so the best our hero, who is meant to be endlessly witty, can do is tell someone to shut up? Over and over again for 300 pages? Great work.

The plot is equally unfocused and random, with Priest seemingly trying to tackle a million ideas at once without setting up any of them. We jump from scenario to scenario to scenario with no reasoning or logic, just throwing Deadpool into a new environment to shoot stuff in. Most of it is unfollowable, and the stuff you can follow is hacky at best. There's also a completely uncharacteristic development involving Deadpool being "cursed" with the face of "Thom Cruz," as they spell it. Deadpool has been longing for a normal face for nearly 40 issues at this point, and now when he gets one, he's upset? Not buying it. It's just a lame attempt at another stupid running "joke" involving the slight misspelling of Tom Cruise. TBS Very Funny.

It is very rare that I outright hate a comic book, but I hated this one. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about it. Even the art is uninspired and haphazard. Character designs are inconsistent, the action is often impossible to follow. There's even a panel where Deadpool is meant to be walking on a ledge, but the ledge is just kind of floating over a street below him. It lacks attention to any detail, like they were just trying to crap this thing out as fast as possible. Avoid at all costs.

‘Deadpool, #6’ is laugh out loud funny! Just what I needed.

I have copied the book blurb:

’Collects Deadpool (1997) #34-45 & Black Panther (1998) #23.

What happens when Deadpool crosses paths with royalty? Watch the madness unfold as the Merc with a Mouth finds out what it's like to cavort with two of Marvel's mightiest monarchs - of the Asgardian and Wakandan variety - as well as hanging with some crooked cronies more befitting his ill-mannered ilk. Guest-starring Thor, Loki, the Black Panther,Constrictor, Taskmaster and more!’

Lots of gratuitous violence and meaningless relationships. Whether Deadpool is dealing with supervillains or superheroes, he disses and betrays them all equally. But the god Loki shows Deadpool he can’t play his usual tricks with the inventor of tricks without severe consequences! Deadpool discovers he is under a curse because of his shenanigans which offended Loki. Will Deadpool ever be forgiven?

This is Priest's entire run on Deadpool, thank goodness. It isn't horrible, but Kelly was a very tough act to follow on Deadpool, and Priest isn't quite up to the task. The storyline he goes with (and it is essentially one overly long storyline) goes past zany and weird to confused and unfocused. There's also a crossover with Black Panther that would probably require background reading to fully understand what's going on with that character. (And Black Panther? One of the oddest characters to choose to do a Deadpool crossover with that I can think of.) Priest seemed to have Deadpool's basic character down, though, so it wasn't a complete loss.

I know, I know. If you see ME give a Deadpool Classic volume 3 stars then there is either something wrong with my love for Wade Wilson, or this one didn't meet the Deadpool criteria. Well, as it turns out this volume isn't as...eminent as the other 5 volumes, (I was going to say "Deadpoolish" but no matter what the writer or artist, everyone seems to get the gist of how Wilson is supposed to behave).
Here's the thing, Joe Kelly (creator of Wade Wilson) stopped writing them at volume 5. So this Christopher Priest took over. I'm not trying to bash him or anything, but Deadpool's story is just getting more confusing and...strange. If someone's going to take over the story THEN *SIGH*!
Anyway! If volume 7 is the last volume for Deadpool Classic, then they had BETTER get things straightened up--because Deadpool deserves more than that!

So glad to read this was Priest's only stint with Deadpool. This comes off as the first inkling of what the random internet troll thinks Deadpool is. Poorly delivered quips and a non-sensual story, not long removed from the height of dialog and story in Deadpool, and maybe in comics in general. No offense to the guy, haven't read his work to my knowledge, but he seems like his kid told him about Deadpool in ten words and he rolled with that. The only thing that saves it from garbage territory are a few cool designs and some fun dialog between Deadpool's roomies, who were funnier than him.

At the very least, a lesson learned from reading this: just because you're openly self-aware that you're writing poorly doesn't make your writing any more enjoyable to read. Or funny. (Emphasis on the latter.)

Christopher Priest’s Deadpool Run

I just finished Priest’s Deadpool run and was really disappointed with how mediocre it was. The Johnny Handsome plot was dumb and didn’t really amount to much. It did yield one of the funnier moments from the run though when Deadpool is trying to destroy his face in the most ridiculous ways imaginable but to no avail.
Other than that, the comedy in this run was sorely lacking. A lot of the same jokes recycled over and over again (Thom Cruz, Taco Bell, Shaddup) that weren’t really funny the first, and definitely weren’t funny the 10th time. I also noticed that in this run Priest leans a lot more into gay humor for Deadpool which Reynolds seemed to adopt. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s just another example of how juvenile Priest’s writing is compared to Joe Kelly. I’m not saying Joe Kelly’s run was perfect but it was lot more enjoyable and better written than Priest’s interpretation of the character.

Joe Kelly’s run is a lot more nuanced, more fleshed out and just better writing overall whereas priests writing of Deadpool has way more meme heavy comedy which can even get cringy at times, less mature themes explored, and overall just not as cleverly written. This version of Deadpool feels like a satire of Deadpool. The way Kelly’s run ended had me intrigued for what was to come and when Priest took the reins, the story took a nose dive. There were some interesting concepts too but it just felt like Priest didn’t know what to do with it. I hope the rest of the 97-02 run is better than Priest’s and if not then I’ll be looking forward to Duggan and Poseh’s run since I’ve heard nothing but good things.

Joe Kelly is a tough act to follow, but I gave Priest a chance and now I wish I hadn't. There are very few jokes in this issue that aren't incredibly tactless and offensive (and not in the good way). This is one of the first times meta is really used in the comic and it's terribly poor. I almost don't want to continue reading, but I will because I hate to leave something unfinished.

Czeka nas kilka retrospekcji, m. in. pokazujących robótkę dla Kingpina i pierwszy kontakt z Bullseye'em.

Bezcenne...

To jednak nie koniec przygód najemnika z nawijką, gdyż zostanie on przeklęty i zamieniony... W Toma Cruise'a.

Deadpool trafi też w kosmos, gdzie czeka go cała masa bijatyk, by w końcówce tomu stanąć w szranki z samymi Avengers i niejakim Czarną Panterą.

I try and be objective when I pick up a book by a writer or artist I don't like. And I do not like Christopher Priest's writing on any title. Someone recommended his Black Panther by Christopher Priest: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 to me about fifteen years ago, and I never listened to another suggestion from that person again. HIs Black Panther run included surprisingly little Black Panther, and mostly a series of meta jokes.

In his Deadpool run. he does put the focus squarely on Deadpool but he immediately makes the story about how Deadpool knows he's a comic book character and how funny it is that he knows he's a comic book character. Priest is so enamored of this idea that he doesn't really tell jokes he just presents ideas and imagines his audience laughing.

Priest is the kind of guy who farts, sniffs his own fart, and laughs at how outrageously funny he is. Unforunately, apart from a dedicated fan base of misogynists with head trauma, I don't know that anyone has ever laughed at a Christopher Priest comic.

In the early 2020s, I saw his name as the writer of Vampirella comics. That's roughly about his talent level. I bet he made a few unfunny period jokes.

If you see this book in a store or library, don't touch it. Spray it with Febreeze and walk swiftly away. Nothing about this story is relevant to any future Deadpool or X-Men comic.

Deadpool Classic, Vol. 6 is an 11 issue Deadpool tale told by Christopher Priest of Black Panther fame. The infamous Merc with a mouth is once again down on his luck until he meets Loki who curses Deadpool to look like actor Thom Cruz. No matter how hard he tries Pool is stuck with this beautiful face. Oh the horror! Deadpool moves in with a few new roommates, Titania and Constrictor, and this relationship is the forcing function that closes out this Deapool adventure.

There were a few good moments in this collection, especially Pool’s brief transformation into Thor (complete with language), but for the most part this collection fell relatively flat for me. I would recommend backing up the bus and enjoying Joe Kelly’s Deadpool interpretation and maybe skipping this one.

Starts of pretty good with a whole trailer park of mercs for hire & an origin story of how Wilson became Deadpool but then it gets very comedic with jokes that are hit & miss . the story kind of dragged , the art is subjective as we all have different taste in what we like so ill just speak for the panel layouts & way the art moves the story along - its actually flows pretty good & helps tell the story just fine nothing amazing but it gets the job done. I will be reading the next volume before i give up on this & hope it picks up I give this a 4.5/10

Really surprising to read the other reviews. I'm not a Priest fan, haven't really read much BP, but this was a great follow on to Kelly's run. Loved the Thom Cruz gag, loved the dynamic with the housemates, and the twist at the end with Vanessa. Hope the father stuff is addressed soon in the next series. Sure some of the plot got a little haphazard but overall it was a great fun story and Deadpools quips were exactly what I was hoping for.

This was a significant improvement on the rambling mess that was Kelly's run, but like so many comics from this era, filled with homophobic and transphobic jokes. I counted five in one issue alone. Overall, a much faster and more cohesive read than the last, but these Classic volumes continue to show me that Deadpool has really come a long way from gross beginnings.

Such a disappointing follow up to Joe Kelly’s run. The characterisation of Deadpool is just off and the plot is weak. I’m not even going to bother reading #46 through to #69 and instead skip to Cable & Deadpool, which hurts me because I wanted to read Deadpool from start to finish but I can’t deal with this writing or art.

In this volume Deadpool gets hexed by Loki and now he looks like movie star "Tom Cruise". The stories by Christopher Priest are just "okay" with some pretty cool art by Paco Diaz and Jim Calafiore. Compared to the earlier volumes this seems more like the Deadpool that we know today in current comic books. A fun read.

One of my favorite Deadpool runs, this one has it all, Tom Cruise doppelgängers , witty banter, Deadpool up against Killmonger and The Avengers? And even an unregistered cameo from an intergalactic bounty Hunter from another comic company.

All the flashbacks messed with my teeny brain, i kinda just forgot what was even happening at the beginning. This book was less emotionally significant and cohesive than Kelly's run, more comedy and hijinks, but I still like comedy and hijinks. Also the art wasn't the best at keeping my attention span and the black panther issues at the end were sooo boring, but this was still a fun read. I liked the weirdo Loki thing and his roommate dynamics were pretty funny! Deadpool i luv u 💯

Contains the complete Priest run of Deadpool. First person to take over after the legendary Joe Kelly run. Not my favorite all time Deadpool run by any stretch of the imagination, but works for what it is as a follow up post Kelly. The run come full circle and can be read as a stand alone book from anything before or after it, and contains dozens of insider references to later 90's world of comics, most pertaining to Priest long history of having books he worked on ax'ed while he was writing. It's also a bit of a wordy read compared to most of what would follow DP wise. The nice swerve involving the wrap around Loki storyline is one of the earlier attempts at adding a shred of serious depth to an otherwise unserious character. unquestionably one of the more unique Deadpool reads. If pressed i'de say the first couple issues and last are the only essential parts of this run.

After 33 issues, Deadpool is handed off to a new writer. Unfortunately, Priest's Deadpool just isn't as fun as Kelly's. I can't even particularly put my finger on what I didn't like. There's some good guest appearances (Loki, Taskmaster) and some bad (a spoof of Lobo--really?). There are some good flashbacks, even if they're a little out of character at times. I love the new roommate thing, and I can't say that the series isn't funny. But it's just missing something. I've racked my brain--when I don't like something, I want to be able to say why--but I just can't figure it out. But I kept reading an issue and then letting it sit for days before picking it up again. It just didn't get my attention...I don't know....

A departure from Joe Kelly left the door open for Christopher Priest, who steps into the writer shoes and hands Deadpool his own brand of complete insanity. This is a consistently decent trade with a nice variation in storylines, and feels quite complete as a whole since all the plotlines are resolved to leave room for the next writer to come on board. I was surprised that the series remained enjoyable after Joe Kelly left, though for different reasons overall.

Priest's final run as the Deadpool writer was pretty decent. Saw a lot more 'breaking the 4th wall' that Deadpool has come to be known for. I still thought the stories were a bit scattered and weak at times and, as much as I love Black Panther, I don't think they integrated all of the characters well and I spent much of the 2 issue crossover trying to figure out who was who. Deadpool is still an amusing and interesting character but just don't think it's written horribly well.

Tohle bylo hodně hodně špatné. Zápletky co nedávají pořádně smysl, recyklování stejných "vtipů" (Za těch 11 sešitů DP snad sedmkrát řekne "Answer to your first question is Shaddup") a další zrůdnosti (WTF plot s Deadpoolovým obličejem).

Thankfully, with the changing of authors comes the end of the classic Deadpool series. It's started to taper off in quality and substance but I'll look forward to a new Deadpool series. Probably just jump right into Cable and Deadpool.
