Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.
Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." I used to brush off the Harry Potter books as mere “children’s bedtime stories.” Then came that fateful day when I had nothing else to read… except Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
One book turned into six (the seventh wasn’t out yet), and when it finally hit the shelves, I practically sprinted to get it — and finished all 700 pages in record time. That’s how my lifelong love affair with the wizarding world began.
Since then, I’ve read the books, watched the movies, hunted down the spin-offs, and basically soaked in every bit of Potter magic that exists.
So when I stumbled upon the Pocket Potter series, it felt like a chocolate frog jumping right into my hand.
This book is a charming mini-encyclopedia of the Harry Potter universe — a ready-reckoner filled with delightful details, magical facts, and nostalgic joy. It’s compact, clever, and an absolute treat for anyone who still feels a little tug at the word “Hogwarts.”
And I have to say — Natalie Smillie’s illustrations are pure enchantment.
Each page bursts with color, warmth, and whimsical detail. Her art doesn’t just decorate the book — it breathes life into it. Every sketch feels like a wink to longtime fans and a hug to newcomers. You can tell she’s a fan herself; that affection glows through her work.
Even after years of rereads, I found surprises tucked between the pages — tiny nuggets I somehow missed before. That’s part of the charm of this series: it lets you rediscover the magic all over again.
I absolutely loved it.
If you adore Potter as much as I do, you’ll find this book impossible to resist.
As for the next two in the series?
Well… maybe I’ll read them today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow.
Actually — why wait? Happiness shouldn’t be postponed.
PS: The ePUB version doesn’t always play nice with every reader. I read mine in PocketBook Reader for Android, and it worked beautifully (just a few layout hiccups here and there).

Série Potterovských průvodců potěší hlavně všechny milovníky světa Harryho Pottera. Jsou totiž takovým menším doplněním a osvěžením důležitých momentů příběhu. Informace nejsou nijak extra chronologicky seřazené, jednotlivé informace ze všech sedmi knih jsou vždy graficky zpracované na jedné dvoustraně.
Například se mi velice líbila speciální dvojstrana o Hedvice. I dvojstrana o Harryho přátelích, škole, famfrpálu nebo vypíchnutí důležitých milníků každé knihy. Knihu ovšem nejvíc ocení fanoušci, protože i po dočtení mi přišlo, že mi v ní něco chybělo. Možná proto, že se snažili vyhnout některým výrazným spoilerům, možná jen nevěděli, jak to do celku zakomponovat.
Kresba knihy je ovšem velice vydařená, i když vzhledu Snapea jsem se mírně lekla. Vlastně i chudák Lupin nedopadl zrovna nejlépe. Naopak Hagrid vypadal skvěle, stejně tak naše oblíbené duo. Knize tak dávám 4 hvězdičky a jsem zvědavá na další díly.

Kresba krásná, ale asi bych tam čekala víc informací. Teď je to spíš průlet.

Great refresher on Harry Potter of most of the key facts and storylines.
I recommend this for people of all ages who read the entire series and want a cute illustrated refresher on key facts etc. If you are a HP fan like me, you will enjoy this book and the other books in this series. There are currently 3 books including this one with more to be published on other characters. I'm looking forward to the next 2 coming on February 24, 2026- Dumbledore and Luna Lovegood. So happy about Luna as she's my favorite character after Harry Potter.
I hope they do one on Dobby! Lol
Down 1 star because it's not new original material, just retelling from the original 7 books.
Down 1 star because I didn't like how the illustrator drew the characters with weird overdone long noses.
I added 1 star back to make up for all the people who rated it 1 star and didn't read the book or write a review but rated it out of hate for political reasons. Which actually goes against the main point of the series- love overcomes hate.
I see each pocket Potter book has a different illustrator and by glancing at the other 2 books can already see the other 2 illustrators are much much better.
I had forgotten about Madam Pomfrey. I remembered pretty much almost everything else mentioned in this book.
I realized that "Defense against the Dark Arts" is really defense against evil in the good v. Evil theme of the entire Harry Potter series. Love wins over hate. ❤️

Lo que más me ha sorprendido es que, además de la belleza visual, este libro está lleno de curiosidades sobre el universo de Harry Potter, y muchas de ellas han sido totalmente nuevas para mí (¡y eso que soy fan desde hace años!). Todo está narrado de forma clara y sencilla, pensado para que incluso los niños puedan comprenderlo sin problemas, lo que lo convierte en una lectura accesible y muy disfrutable.
Este libro está recomendado para niños a partir de 8 años, pero sinceramente creo que es perfecto para cualquier edad, ya seas un pequeño lector que empieza a descubrir el mundo mágico o un coleccionista que disfruta atesorando cada detalle de la saga. Eso sí, aviso importante: si aún no habéis leído los libros principales, aquí os vais a encontrar spoilers, porque se cuenta bastante de lo que ocurre en la historia. Aunque, a “grosso modo”, también sirve como un recorrido por los eventos más importantes de la saga.
Personalmente, creo que esta colección de Pocket Potters es ideal para los más peques, pero también para quienes amamos coleccionar ediciones especiales. A mí, como fan de la saga, me ha parecido una verdadera joya.
En definitiva, si buscas un regalo bonito, educativo y mágico, o si simplemente eres fan de Harry Potter y quieres algo único para tu estantería, esta colección es una apuesta segura.

People love to roll their eyes and call the Pocket Potters a “cash grab,” but honestly? If giving me adorable, bite-sized, joyfully illustrated guides to my favorite characters is a cash grab… then grab my cash. At least this grab leaves me smiling, unlike the countless other pointless merch out there (looking at you, random branded tea towels).

September 29, 2025These are great books, especially if your kid hasn't read Harry Potter but are interested in it. These little books gives them all the basics of the characters. I love the illustrations and the colours that go into this book. I love that we have the main three so far and that there will be more coming out either this year or next which is so exciting. Another exciting thing is that these are on Kindle Unlimited so I can just read them on there instead of buying the books. I love that all the Harry Potter books are on Kindle Unlimited so that I can read them and I don't have to take my books off my bookshelf.
If you have been wanting to introduce your kids to the Harry Potter world this is a great way to do that because the book is short and the colours will be able to keep them engaged. This is a great kids book in my opinion. I also likes how the story gets right to the point and tells you all the important things that happen in the books and the movies.

This is a great kids book in my opinion. I also likes how the story gets right to the point and tells you all the important things that happen in the books and the movies.

Si eres un fan de Harry Potter este libro es para ti....ya se que está recomendado para niños de 8, pero a mí me ha gustado casi tanto o más que a mis hijos, no me juzgueis o hacedlo 😂🫣
Por dentro es precioso, tiene unas ilustraciones super bonitas, yo solo tengo el de Harry ( por ahora 🤭) pero tienen también el de Hermione y Ron.
Me presta sobretodo las curiosidades que trae, porque hubo unas cuantas que no tenía ni idea.
Si teneis que hacer algún regalo a un fan de Harry puede ser una gran opción 🤭

Super cute. Terrific take on the series for littler ones not ready for the full novels (especially younger siblings who are jealous their older sibling is reading the books). Tells the overarching story of Harry thru all 7 books, while not getting too deep into the more frightening elements.
Illustrations are adorable, though I found it hard to know what order to read the paragraphs of text on the page. The layout could have been a bit better for a clearer reading experience, especially for a small child.

Harry Potter (Pocket Potters #1) - J.K Rowling, Natalie Smillie (Illustrator)
I’ve seen the movies a couple of times with different groups of people who swear it’s great. lol It’s not really my thing but there are items I wish i had and characters I like. Dobby & Hedwig are my favourites.
When I saw this pocket Potter series I was intrigued. 😬
I really need to say the illustrations are amazing! Well done to Natalie Smillie, great work.

This book might be short, but it's good! I feel like I have something in common with Harry. I might not be a wizard or British, but like Harry I'm brave. It's probably beat that I stay out of castles, though, because I use a wheelchair. Besides, I'm probably as old as some of his teachers were by now. I'm 53.

I enjoyed this read very much. I believe this book keeps the spirit of Hogwarts going for future generations to come and helps to keep the magic of Harry Potter alive. It filled me with nostalgia and child like wonder. For beginners wanting to learn about the Harry Potter world, especially kids, this is the book for you!

Bármennyire is tetszettek az illusztrációk, nem jöttem rá, ki lehet a célközönség. Aki már olvasta a könyveket, annak sok újat nem tartogat, de felfrissítésnek mindenképp jó. Aki pedig még nem olvasta őket, annak ez full spoiler. Esetleg arra jó lehet, hogy filmnézés közben tudjunk mutogatni a nem olvasó ismerősünknek, hogy "nézd csak, ez igazából így volt a könyvekben!!!".
