Occasionally, our lives tangle together when we least expect it. Sometimes it's down to fate... other times, it's a horrendous dating site and a torturous blind date.
Isla MacLeod belongs to the vast Hebridean sea; she's a fisherwoman caught in a net of isolation against the rugged backdrop of Skye. Working alongside her grandfather, Isla hasn't made time for anyone to quietly slip into her safespace. Granda's pushing the throttle forward–– and not just on the trawler; he's desperate for Isla to find the one.
Open water’s always felt like home, but the tides are changing; stormy skies are looming. As waves crash on the coastline, she craves more.
After Morag (the overzealous best friend) sets Isla up on Highland Hearts dating site, there's more chance of finding a cat running a brothel than a decent match... Well, until an uptight, hairy coo enters her inbox.
Meet the coo...
Paisley Campbell's solicitor life in Edinburgh no longer fills her with happiness. She might look good on paper, but it's her internal state that's crumbling.
Bound by rules and deadlines by day, Paisley's become nothing more than a reclusive, wine-drinking, book fiend by night. Stuck in her ways with a snotty mother breathing down her neck, Paisley's sick of the constant criticism.
Fuelled by sarcasm, anxiety and a disastrous blind date, Paisley decides enough is enough–– It’s time to take charge. Believing she's in full control of her downward spiral, she sends a message... and a prayer to the dating God's.
Isla and Paisley might be miles apart, but they're floating closer.
The tide's shifting between them, but is it too strong to ignore?
With ample humour, typical Scottish cheek and Scots language — Tangled Lines will keep you hooked.
Follow the entertaining journey of these two late 30's women in this witty slow-burn romance. Filled with yearning, drama and plenty of tension.
L.M. Pirie is a sapphic romance author based in Scotland. She lives with her wife and cat (one that could easily win a fight against a Honey Badger) on the east coast.
Her stories are funny, full of queer wit, awkward glances, and the occasional romantic disaster.
When she's not writing, she’s usually trying out a new hobby that is gauranteed to make a mess, cost a fortune or last for a whole three days. Other than that, she'll normally be rewriting a single sentence for four hours straight, listening to some din through her headphones (usually to ignore the wife), or trying to convince you that staring out the window CAN be classed as 'work'.
Warning: her books may cause spontaneous laughter, mild mood swings, and an intense craving for Scottish culture.
I read the “warning” about the “Scottish English” and figured it was funny but disregarded it. Ill say that it was there for a reason! At first, I had some serious difficulty reading this novel but then I tried using a (bad) Scottish accent in my internal monologue and suddenly it wasn’t a problem anymore. This was an interesting experience! The novelty of reading something written “a bit differently than I’m used to” was neat. I would definitely do it again, although not for every book.
This was slooooooow, which I like, but yeah it was a slow burn. I liked that we got a lot of time to get to know the characters and their backgrounds, and I think this was very well written. The protagonists were a little overly desperate to find someone (consumed a lot of word count, lmao) but I can’t say that’s unrealistic after all! I don’t know overall how I felt about the pacing; some parts it was perfect, and others might have been a little off. I would have liked to see the protagonists together more!
I enjoyed the setting. The sea is always a great supporting character for any novel, and this was clearly written by someone who knows the setting and subject matter (sometimes its just….).
I am unsure on my thoughts on the ending. I liked it, but I also felt like it left a bit to be desired. It makes sense though now that I have seen that there is going to be a sequel.
I don’t know exactly why this didn’t get the 5th star. I feel like something was just missing somewhere to get those final points. I enjoyed this novel though and think its definitely worth the read.
Thank you to the author for providing a free ARC. This honest review was left voluntarily.
This was interesting and very different and I truly enjoyed the read. The Scottish English was a fun challenge for me. When my inner voice was having problems, I went on TikTok and watched videos of the little girl that wants to go get sausages for the caravan and got my inner voice back on track. I also appreciated the glossary at the end. I loved the setting of Skye so much and when Isla and her Granda went to Edinburg, I felt like I was going on vacation with them. Granda was probably my favorite character.
Even though both characters seemed a bit thirsty and desperate at the beginning of the book, Paisley and Isla really grew on me. It was definitely a slow burn, but I did enjoy it very much. I feel like Paisley had a bit more character growth than Isla, but since this is series, I feel like I’ll get that same growth from Isla later on.
This is gonna sound super nit picky, but the formatting of the ebook really took away from the experience. Every single sentence was its own paragraph, except it wasn’t indented. Even when a character was speaking, it was sentence, “return key,” sentence, “return key.” It really jammed me up on getting in the flow of the conversations and I felt lost quite a bit. The quotation marks were apostrophes and that threw me off too. I hope book 2 really buys into standard formatting.
I will absolutely read more from this author and I look forward to learning a how Isla and Paisley navigate their relationship.
I was lucky enough to be a Beta Reader for the author over the summer. As a Scot I can rarely find literature using our actual slang and dialect. It has so many laugh out loud moments. The main characters of Isla and Paisley are so relatable, likeable and have so much chemistry. The ‘additional’ characters of Morag and James add so much depth to the story. It is a ‘slow burn’ romance yes, but I felt it was also delivered at a considerate pace for this forthcoming trilogy. The emotional scenes were so heartfelt. Its backdrop is so refreshing, featuring a woman in a working fisher community.
I loved this book!
I look forward to book 2 being published to follow Paisley and Isla on their journey.
This is an honest review for the free ARC received from the author.
It is a slow burn romance between a city girl and a small town girl. Set in Scotland, the settings being in the bustling city of Edinburgh and the quiet town of Portree on the Isle of Skye. Wonderfully written, light-hearted, funny, entertaining and enjoyable. Both characters being lovable and adorable.
I think both MCs were well built up with good backgrounds for each. Though in the early parts of the story the image of them being desperate and sex starved women somehow kind of stuck to mind! Which I suppose was part of the plot of the story, at least for their desperation to find love.
The plot itself was believable and well written since both were getting older and using dating apps in a desperate bid to find love but with a nice twist of it being like a blind date since they've never seen each other's pictures.
The pacing was a nice and slow slow burn. I thought the pace would suddenly be a fast burn when they first met each other for the first time but thankfully it was just light teasing and nothing else. But as for the moment of their consummation, it just felt a little too rushed in a way.
I liked the love that slowly blossomed between them and the willingness to try and really make it work despite their very different backgrounds and numerous other obstacles that they faced. The supporting characters were decently built up and seemed to blend and fit well around the two MCs.
I somehow felt like all the characters in the story were somewhat shallow since a little too much emphasis was placed on each other's partner needing to be as aesthetically pleasing as can be. Though I do admit that in real life there are people who consider beauty as paramount in finding a suitable partner.
I did find the ending not to my liking though since I felt some issues were still unresolved and there was no feel of a real ending. I surmise perhaps because Ms Pirie intends to continue with a sequel.
As for the sequel I'm assuming the story begins about one or two years later? It would be helpful if the timeline is stated at the beginning since not everyone might understand and not everyone might have read the first book. And I wouldn't mind reading the sequel if there ever was one.
In conclusion I would recommend it for those who would like some light reading sapphic romance in their reading list. The usage of Scottish English isn't too much of a barrier especially if one has read similar books and also those versed in Irish English.
* I would like to point out a misprint on ch. 29, p 192: It should read New Message - (V. Hairy Coo) and not Isla McLeod.
Tangled Lines is a slowburn romance between a solicitor in the city of Edinburgh, Paisley and a fisherwoman in the isle of Skye, Isla. They’re both mature, lonely women who haven’t had a partner for a very long time. They meet online through a dating app and message anonymously over a period of time before arranging to meet in person, not everything goes according to plan but maybe that’s not so bad.
I struggled a lot at the beginning with the Scottish English, I’m usually a fast reader but I had to go really slow here to understand what was being said. I saw someone that said reading it in a bad Scottish accent in their head helped, and once I did that, I got through a lot faster, shoutout to them for the assist. I was warned though that it was written this way, so it wasn’t a surprise.
I enjoyed that we got to know the main characters and the surroundings individually before they even started talking to each other. The description of the struggles that they faced apart from being lonely and wanting a partner were really nice and I also enjoyed that those struggles were not magically resolved by finding love. I think that both Isla and Paisley are very lovable characters because they feel real and down to earth. Can’t wait to see what the sequel brings.
Thank you to L.M. Pirie for providing me with an eARC, I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you firstly for allowing me the opportunity to read this beautifully written book.
So we have Isla a small town fisherwomen who’s kinda sexually crazed meets big city paisley
We have some sllllllllow burn romance which kills me every time I’m more of a devour me now sorta girl but this book kept you reading regardless.
As a southern England girl it was nice to read a book with good Scottish “slang”
(There could be a few spelling mistakes that need looking at before you publish 😊)
Otherwise this book is super enjoyable and was really refreshing to read from my normal genre. I’m looking forward to seeing more from this author for sure 👌 📚
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak before publishing. It had me gripped from the first chapter and I finished within a couple days.
As a Scot, the use of local dilect within brought me straight to home. Great character description and development which got me attached to each of them very quickly. James, a personal favourite, gave me a few giggles.
Most definitely a page turner. Can't wait for a follow up!
This was an absolutely fantastic read. I struggled constantly to put it down, and sacrificed a lot of sleep to keep reading.
I don't usually enjoy books written with accents, but the dialogue is written so well I could understand it perfectly as someone who isn't fluent with Scottish slang. It really adds to the characterisation and keeps you immersed in the setting. There were times I thought the dialogue was a little stiff and more formal than typical in conversation, but I can easily look over that.
I loved every character, and was fully invested in Isla and Paisley's relationship. For once in the romance genre, it didn't feel like the plot was entirely contrived just to have rushed intimacy scenes; the story felt organic, heartfelt, and the characters really felt like real people.
The ending has ripped my heart open and I'm desperate for the sequel!
What a read! Such an interesting take on a modern day sapphic romance. But that’s not all, a journey of relationships from family to friends and everything in between. Perfect cozy read but you might need a tissue at a certain point. Can’t wait for book 2. 10/10
in which two Scottish women get super intense over dating app and text, and then somehow get even more intense in-person
so the book is written in what I'm assuming is an authentic Scottish accent, which took a little while to get used to and then most sentences are given their own line like this, which took even longer to get used to the formatting was a little broken for a lot of the book, though I wondered if that was because I'm the only person in the world reading through the Kindle app in browser I need to stop with this self-demonstrating format now it's hurting my brain
like I said, these women are incredibly intense. Isla and Paisley were baring their souls in like their first weekend of texting each other, but hey, it worked. there is a rather concerning element added to the story with something Isla does late in the book and I don't know if I'd describe it as sufficiently addressed? but there are mitigating factors and she was extremely sorry, so
I love big feelings in a romance, and these are just the biggest feelings.
What an amazing read! I laughed, I cried and everything in-between. The most amazing sapphic romance with such wholesome themes. The perfect book to cozy up with. And by the end you will feel like the characters are your friends! Do yourself a favour and give this one a read! And of course the Scottish lingo adds an amazing depth of character and charm.
I haven’t read many sapphic romances, however this book has very much given me the incentive to read more.
The pacing is gentle, but never dull. As someone who has travelled many parts of Scotland I found the setting, from city streets to sweeping coastlines to be described with a clear knowledge of the areas, and beautifully presented. Pirie clearly understands what makes a place more than a backdrop, she lets Scotland breathe as a character in its own right.
If the book has a “flaw,” it’s simply that you may wish to linger with the characters longer. The ending leaves space for more not in a frustrating way, but in the way real life often does, with the sense that Paisley and Isla’s story continues just beyond the final page, and that, as in reality, we are only getting a chapter in a life lived.
As someone with Scottish family I found the slang and language to be beautifully presented and only needed to check a few phrases, none of which detracted from the story itself.
Tangled Lines is funny without losing depth and romantic without ever feeling forced. It’s a beautifully observed story about connection, courage, and finding love where you least expect it.
Tangled Lines by LM Pirie is, somewhat uniquely, both a slow-burn romance and a U-Haul situation. The women are successful in their own right, yet lonely and jaded. Isla and Paisley are desperate for love, companionship, and passion. They meet on a dating app and begin exchanging messages. They get to know each other sight unseen, without pictures or phone calls. After a couple of weeks, they meet in person. The two must navigate a lot of big feelings and some significant life events.
What I like: • Lovely cover art • Scottish accents, slang, and culture • Humorous moments • Witty banter and internal monologues • Older MCs, both just under 40 • Interesting writing style • Vivid imagery • Strong best friend support • Quirky grandparent • Paisley's confrontation with her mother • The declarations of love were a bit poetic
What I didn't like: • Although initially entertaining, the unique writing style became tedious and slowed the pacing at around 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the novel. That being said, the changes in the plot at this point help to pick up momentum. • Understandably, the two women are a bit cynical about life, but I found their superficial judgment of others a bit harsh. • I wasn't exactly thrilled with the ending. It was fine but a bit anticlimactic.
Overall, I enjoyed this Scottish romcom featuring the opposites-attract and big city/small town tropes. I am giving it 3.75 stars, rounded up.
#fishing #lawyer/solicitor #IsleofSkye #Edinburgh #Scotland #oppositesattract #olderMCs #fishingboat #romcom #UHaul #slowburn #bigcity/smalltown #quirkygrandparent #dysfunctionalfamily #bestfriendsupport #datingapp #deathofalovedone #grief I received a free ARC from the author. This is my honest opinion.
What did I think about this book ? It was very easy to read, flowed well, the dialogue was superb, it’s based in Edinburgh so expect the dialogue to be spoken in Scottish, personally I thought it more authentic . This is the secound sapphic novel I’ve ever read and I can seriously and honestly say I was totally smitten with the two main characters Paisley and Isla. Everyone will have their own opinions on character as do I.
We all have a human need to be loved and be love back and be someone’s special person, This came across in this book so well and written so beautifully. Relationships, romance, friends, family. It all is important within the pages of this book.
What I’ve also took away with me is we all have our vulnerabilities and sometimes these can distract us from making important decisions .
Yes it’s a slow burn romance and it’s written at its best it’s not where the reader will think ‘hey I’ve had enough of this, nothings happened yet” yes! It has, it’s building the surroundings of paisleys work and friends and family and her thoughts, needs and wants, and for Isla meeting her friend in the book too I have a feeling we may see more of her in book2 maybe.
All in all the things that were subjects of “dicey “ situations that could have made or broken a relationship was also something I took away with me. There is a book 2 due out soon, and I understand book 3 is being written.
There is a bit of grief in theses chapters however this is so sensitively written about.
So my book friends you know I give no long reviews ordinarily, however, if this book review whets your appetite for more, then my job is done.
If you read it whenever you read it, please inbox me and let me know your thoughts or tag me in your review.
I was excited to have the opportunity to read Tangled lines, because I love relatable sapphic books with strong characters and that slow burn to keep you turning the page —and this one delivered it.
As a fellow Scot, I enjoyed the use of Scot's slang throughout. I could appreciate the author's chosen words. Places & the FMCs were both hugely relatable. This slow burn definitely had me questioning the first few chapters if this would be a book for me. That being said, when I passed them I couldn't wait to read more.
Ironically, being very much a real-life Paisley in a family of Campbells, this book resonated with me in so many ways. In the end, it was a true revelation that no matter what, LOVE wins. Don't ever let anyone or anything stand in your way of happiness.
I look forward to seeing further releases and would love to see what the future holds for Paisley & Isla moving forward. My only wish would have been to get more of them together instead of that slow burn build up to then come to an end sooner than I wanted. That is just personal preference and the fact I have become hooked. :)
Tangled Lines is a raw yet tender story, threaded with humour and down-to-earth snark. It begins a little unsteady as we alternate between the perspectives of two women in their late thirties, each yearning for someone who can truly see and accept them. Once the story finds its rhythm, though, it pulls you in, and I found myself unable to put it down.
One of the most refreshing parts of the book is the use of Scots throughout the dialogue. Although it took a while to get used to (the glossary was extremely helpful), it lends the story a vivid sense of place and authenticity. I'd love to be able to listen to this as an audiobook if it ever gets one.
The ending is quietly satisfying, though it leaves room for more, which is fitting, since this is part of a series. I’m curious and kinda nervous to see what life (or the author) throws at Isla and Paisley next.
If you like a slow burn, heartfelt romance full of yearning and straight talk, you'll want to read Tangled Lines.
A five-star debut written in dialect! This was a lovely and brutal introduction to Scots for me, and I loved every part of it!
The novel is written in a stream-of-consciousness-esque style. As a reader, we are treated to plenty of stray thoughts and musings that ground us firmly in the mind of ev
On to the story! We follow two women in their late thirties who are desperately looking for love. At the very least, they feel that love is missing from their lives in a meaningful way. It is a simple premise that builds up to an entertaining story that feels natural and coherent, if at some times presented with a touch too flowery language.
Best of all, I think the story portrays flawed characters that decide to work together instead of blindly trusting in infatuation and need. It is refreshing to see characters that realise relationships are filled with gives, takes, mistakes, and forgiveness.
As someone who never reads romance, this was more than a pleasant surprise. I was hooked immediately ( excuse the pun) Isla and Paisley are characters who I think a lot of queer woman will relate to, this book gave me all the feels, it was witty, raw, heartbreaking and so relatable. Well written, with deeply rich flawed characters and a very relatable story of wanting to be loved when you have been starved for so long by many who should love and accept you. This was a stunning, funny the one liners of scottish humour had me laughing out loud. The details about the Isle of Skye will make a lot of people want to visit! It was un-put-downable. I wanted more as soon as I hit the last line.. Huge congratulations to LM Pirie for this debut Novel and for changing the mind of a very hard fantasy reader. STUNNING!! I need book 2 now!
Absolutely loved this! Tangled Lines by L.M. Pirie was such a joy to read. It was engaging and full of heart. I was invested from the start and every chapter after. The writing has that great blend of humour and emotion that keeps you turning pages without realising how much time has passed. (I accidentally read until well after my bedtime, twice!)
By the end I swear I was speaking fluent Scottish… or at least trying to. I dinnae know if my accent’s any good like, but reading this had me ready tae pack up and move tae Skye!
Paisley and Isla completely stole my heart. I adored James, Sharon, and Morag, they were all such funny, memorable characters.
A fantastic sapphic romance with charm and wit! Highly recommend!
Isla is a fisherwoman, and longing for love, but there's not many lesbians on the small island. Her best mate Morag suggests she try a dating app.
Paisley is a single lawyer, with no time to date, and worse her friends keep setting her up with awful people. She runs across Isla on the same app, and they strike up a conversation.
Isla needs to bring her grandpa into the city to update his will, and in the process they finally meet. They like each other, but the distance may be too much....
The formatting is very weird. Its not so bad to make it unreadable, but not fun.
2.5 stars. Its not really bad, but not great. Its also to be continued, too.
Each character has been well developed which reflects in their unique personalities and easy likability. The main characters Isla and Paisley, have tension from the beginning, clashing subtly resulting in a dire longing for each other. The epitome of a slow burn, this novel is easily read and leaves you wanting more. Funny with touching romantic moments, it isn't hard to loose yourself in the characters lives. I can't wait to see what else is in store!
I really enjoyed reading this. Whilst the slow burn pacing is not usually my thing, and the Scots words did trip me up (thank you Glossary and my wife for the translations), I feel like this book definitely has a niche within the Sapphic Romance community!
Tangled Lines is very much going to hold a place on my bookshelf (as opposed to my "book pile") and Once my book fund has replenished, I'll need to grab the next book!
It’s hard to believe this is the author’s debut novel. I was hooked from the very first chapter and finished the book in just three days. The writing is engaging and easy to follow, and the story of how the two main characters meet is beautifully told. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. This is definitely an author to watch for the future, and I can’t wait to read the next installments in the series.
ARC review, The pacing was nice slow burn, not usually what I read but I said to myself why not? The story got my eyes glued to my phone I couldn't stop reading (eventually had to sleep so I stopped haha) Paisley and Isla's love story gave me hope to find mine and that being in your mid 30's doesn't mean you can't find love
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The slow burn between Paisley and Isal brings many emotions with it. The writing style is amazing it was hard to put down. The story touch on some very difficult emotions of lose and love. I commend the way these emotions were handled. I will be recommending to friends.
I absolutely loved this book, written in English and Scots. Right from the get go, you care and root for Isla and Paisley as they navigate towards each other.
The style is original, witty and charming and the pacing is spot on. There is laughter and tears, and the dual point of view delivers a very satisfying narrative arc and denouement.
A gripping read even for a guy. Good humour throughout and a good knowledge of Skye and Edinburgh included. Also a good imagery of both charactor's career paths. Down to earth and realistic Scottish lanuage but not so much as to make it not understandable to others.
I absolutely loved this book. The character and location descriptions are amazing. The characters are so relatable which makes it an easy read. Also loved the use of Scots language. Bring on book 2.
