Secrets

How you see yourself, how others see you, and how you really are can be very different. When we see a swan gliding serenely across a pond, we don’t see the paddling beneath the water. It’s the same with people. We see them moving through life, but we don’t see what’s happening under the surface. We don’t see their secrets, their dreams, the path that got them to where they are, the things they wish were so. We don’t know their inner monologue, the things they tell themselves. That’s why we are so often surprised by the teen-aged suicide or the award-winning housewife.
This is a story about the inner and outer lives of people in a small town; about how they see themselves, their town, and others. Things are not as they seem.
