German Edition out soon: Der Tanzende
A novel about loneliness, set in a disco: Jestin's debut Heatwave (Hitze / La Chaleur) was dark and pretty good, and this sophomore effort is darker and even better. Our protagonist is Arthur, whom we follow between the ages of ten (in 1990) and 39. When we first meet him, he is a shy child attending the birthday party of a club owner's nephew, which brings the kid into "La Plage" for the first time. It will take him years to find the courage to actually dance in the club, and once he overcomes his inhibitions to move, he obsessively hits the dancefloor multiple times a week - but Arthur never manages to overcome his issues to form long-term meaningful bonds with people. The club becomes his safe space where he can move freely, an alternative world to a reality in which he experiences himself as a failure and which he aims to evade. At the beginning of the book, he wakes up on a bench in "La Plage", aged 39, and wonders how to proceed...
Once again, Jestin shows an outsider, and the portrayal of Arthur, who is good at heart, but reigned by anxiety of the unknown, is devastatingly sad. Arthur wants to connect with people by dancing, but he also wants to flee real life. He desperately seeks love, but can't make it work, as he is unable to break out of his routine: A dead-end job in a gym where he also works out, and his nights at the club. The idea to face new environments terrifies him, so as he ages, he gets stuck in this lifestyle and becomes a tragic case, slipping further and further into depression.
Arthur does not drink or take drugs, he holds no strong opinions or beliefs, he seeks deliverance in dancing - not for one night, but perpetually. This is probably the most claustrophobic party novel ever written, and the subtlety, intelligence, and psychological depth of this first-person narrative is highly impressive, especially considering that Jestin (who by his own account doesn't know how to dance) was born in 1994. We need translations into more languages and some international prize nominations for this highly talented guy.

Lu une deuxième fois pour le taf et toujours incroyable.

Aurais-je trouvé mon coup de cœur de la rentrée littéraire.
J’aime de tout mon cœur quand des livres arrivent à mettre des mots de sentiments inexplicables et trop abstraits pour être expliqués. Ce livre parle, en partie, de la solitude. Et la pression sociale pour la « combattre ». Les mots m’ont parlé et m’ont atteint si profondément. J’ai apprécié grandement l’absence totale de jugement de la part de l’auteur envers son personnage. Arthur est quelqu’un que beaucoup trouverait triste et pathétique et pourtant il m’est apparu comme un mélange d’ange et de clown triste, tournoyant sur cette piste de danse. Car oui la danse est au cœur du roman. L’utiliser pour parler de masculinité, ses faiblesses et sa toxicité, est un des tours de forces de ce livre. La manière dont les hommes de ce livre dansent en dit beaucoup sur qui ils sont, les bons comme les très mauvais.
Ce fut une très, très belle lecture.

An einem langen Abend gelesen. Schwierig für mich zu bewerten. Es gibt fast nichts, was mir an dem Buch gefällt. Inhalt, Figuren, Plotentwicklung … am liebsten vergesse ich alles gleich wieder. Bunt schillernde Tristesse unter der Disco-Kugel. Und dennoch der sprachliche Sog ist so stark, dass ich es gerne weiter- und fertiggelesen habe. Kein großes Kunststück bei 200 Seiten, aber es zeugt wirklich von der schriftstellerischen Qualität, den Leser trotz völligen Desinteresses für den Stoff bei der Stange zu halten. Eigentlich bin ich ja nur beim Tanzenden gelandet, weil mir Hitze sehr gut gefallen hat, der aber spannender war.
Keine Empfehlung aber wer sich aus irgendeinem Grund zu dem Buch hingezogen fühlt, wird es vermutlich zügig lesen und sicher etwas finden, das gefällt.

Egal wo, überall ist er Außenseiter, bis er sich mit viel Disziplin im Fitnessstudio maskuline Muskelmasse antrainiert und beim Tanzen im Club zur Rampensau wird. Die Bardame und Türsteher werden seine engsten “Vertrauten”, sie kennen ihn beim Namen und er kann ritualisierte, kurze Unterhaltungen mit ihnen führen. Er kündigt seinen Job und konzentriert sich nur noch auf das Leben im Club. Hier fühlt er sich zu Hause, hier bekommt er Ansehen für sein tänzerisches Können.
Über eine klassische Coming-of-age Geschichte geht es zumindest altersmäßig weit hinaus. Er ist bald 40 als die Geschichte endet, aber so richtig weiterentwickelt hat sich bei ihm nicht viel. Nur die Erkenntnis, dass es nicht ewig so weitergehen wird, reift langsam in ihm.
Er ist ein ziemlich schlichter Charakter, eigentlich ein Totalversager wie er im Buche steht, er definiert sich nur über sein Äußeres und es tut fast weh ihm dabei zuzusehen, wie er sein Leben vergeudet, er ist extrem feige, macht allen etwas vor, ist illoyal und hat eine ausgewachsene Soziophobie. Trotzdem gelingt es dem Autor, dass man irgendwie, widerwillig zwar, mit ihm mitgeht und auch Mitgefühl hat und ja, auch eine gewisse Sympathie. Schön ist zudem, dass der Autor Null Urteile fällt.

Dieses Buch erzählt von einer ganz besonderen Beziehung zwischen dem titelgebenden Tanzenden und seinem bevorzugtem Club, dem La Plage. Nur dort fühlt er sich wohl, nur dort blüht er auf. Und das nicht nur über Jahre, sondern Jahrzehnte. Das Buch hat mich sehr betroffen gemacht, denn Jestin schafft es, Mitleid zu erzeugen, ohne an der Kitschschraube zu drehen und entwirft zudem hochkomplexe Figuren, die vor allem auf der psychologischen Ebene voll überzeugen (was mag da von diesem noch recht jungen Autor noch kommen...?). Interessant umgesetzt (u.a. mit Kapiteleinteilung nach Bekanntschaft und passendem Song), sehr bewegend und on top ein richtig guter Beitrag zum Megathema "Einsamkeit" (denn ja, die kann man auch in einem vollem Club empfinden).

Solide, aber nichts was mir allzu lange bleiben wird.
Mir gefiel der Rhythmus der Gesicht, dass die Kapitel nach den Menschen, denen Arthur darin begegnet ist, benannt waren und die Songs im Kapitel genannt wurden.
Es hatte oft starke Stellen, die aber nicht gross weiterverfolgt wurden, was schade ist. Auch sonst hatte ich das Gefühl, das Buch eilt mir zu sehr. Und vielleicht bin ich auch ein wenig durch mit dem Narrativ des indifferenten, introvertierten jungen Mann im Spätkapitalismus.

Sehr langweilige Erzählung über einen von Komplexen bestimmten jungen Mann, der dank antrainierter Muskelmasse und einstudierten tänzerischen Fähigkeiten so etwas wie Anerkennung auf der Tanzfläche erlangt, persönlich jedoch keinerlei Entwicklung durchmacht. Ich hatte mir viel mehr versprochen von Jestin, der mich mit seiner flirrend-spannenden Erzählung Hitze sehr überzeugt hatte.

Tweede boek van Jestin.
Vertoont enige overeenkomst met La Chaleur in dit opzicht dat het hoofdpersonage weer iemand is die zich niet goed in zijn vel voelt.
En toch ook totaal anders dan zijn vorige boek want we volgen nu de protagonist over meerdere jaren, nl van zijn tiende tot zijn veertigste.
Arthur is als kind al introvert, maakt niet makkelijk vriendjes. Als tiener wordt het er natuurlijk niet beter op. Maar als twintiger vindt hij geleidelijk aan zijn eigen niche, de dansvloer van de plaatselijke discotheek...
Weer knap gedaan van Jetsin.
Eenvoudige taal, eenvoudige zinnen.
Maar wel een mooi uitgewerkt hoofdpersonage.
Een boek dat zowel YA's als volwassenen kan aanspreken.
Ik blijf fan van deze piepjonge schrijver.

Abend für Abend zieht es ihn in den gleichen Club – nicht etwa, weil er neue Bekanntschaften schliessen will, sondern um zu tanzen. Nur hier fühlt er sich frei. Und dabei merkt er nicht, wie das Leben an ihm vorbeizieht.
Arthur ist zehn Jahre alt, als er das La Plage zum ersten Mal betritt. Sofort fühlt er sich unwohl. Ein Schulkamerad darf hier seinen Geburtstag feiern, doch Arthur schafft es nicht, sich zur Musik zu bewegen. Er ist wie erstarrt, weiss nicht, wie er sich verhalten soll in der ungewohnten Umgebung. Und ungewohnt ist nicht nur die Tanzfläche; Arthur ist ein Aussenseiter, er wurde nur eingeladen, damit gleich viele Jungen wie Mädchen anwesend sind.
Erst als Jugendlicher betritt er den Club ein nächstes Mal. Er hat einen Entschluss gefasst: er will teilnehmen am Leben, jemand sein. Er besucht einen Tanzkurs, schaut sich Moves ab, formt seinen Körper – bisher Modell Lauch – im Fitnessstudio. Immer öfter zieht es ihn ins La Plage. Die Tanzfläche wird zu seinem neuen Lebensmittelpunkt.
Sein neu gewonnenes Selbstbewusstsein beschränkt sich allerdings auf genau diese. Während die Menschen in seinem Umfeld wegziehen, neue Jobs annehmen oder Familien gründen, verspürt er keinerlei Motivation, etwas an der bequemen Routine seines Alltags zu verändern: arbeiten am Empfangstresen des Fitnessstudios, tanzen im Club, schlafen – und wieder von vorne. Die Jahre ziehen ins Land.
Victor Jestin zeichnet das Psychogramm eines jungen Mannes, der nirgends seinen Platz findet. Arthur weiss nicht, wie man auf Menschen zugeht und sich unterhält. Er hat keine Hobbys, keine beruflichen oder schulischen Ambitionen, keine Ansichten oder Überzeugungen. Seine Wohnung ist kahl, sein Leben ereignislos, seine einzigen «Freunde» die Angestellten des Clubs. Arthur ist im Grunde ein guter Mensch, nur leider unsympathisch, uninteressant und stumpf.
Eins sei gesagt: an dieser Tatsache wird sich bis zum Schluss des kurzen Bandes nichts ändern. Jestin gönnt seinem Protagonisten keine Erlösung. Dafür lässt er seine Leser:innen regelrecht spüren, wie einer verzweifelt nach einem Lebensinhalt sucht und daran scheitert. Es ist ein Roman über Ängstlichkeit, Verbissenheit und Einsamkeit – tragisch und traurig.

Noch überraschender: Er lächelte. Die wenigsten lächeln beim Tanzen. Die Sache war zu ernst. Die meisten hatten einen zugleich konzentrierten und mürrischen Gesichtsausdruck, wie beim Masturbieren, wodurch das La Plage manchmal wie eine düstere Kirche wirkte.

Außenseitergeschichten gibt es in der Literaturgeschichte zahlreiche. In aller Regel kommen diese aber als Entwicklungs- und Integrationsgeschichte daher. Nicht so bei Arthur, dem Protagonisten des Romans „Der Tanzende“ von Victor Jestin. Es schmerzt bisweilen schon, ihn über einen Zeitraum von 30 Jahren zu begleiten und um Anerkennung und Beziehung zu kämpfen. Sein Leben spielt sich dabei dabei in einem Club ab, deren Regeln eher sich einverleibt und sich diesen Raum zu seiner Domäne formt. Nur schafft er es auf schmerzliche Weise nicht, seine übrigen Bedürfnisse zu erfüllen. Allein diese Konstellation macht den Roman schon lesenswert.
Darüber hinaus werden auch immer wieder soziologische Beobachrungen möglich: Wie wirken Männlichkeitsideale auf Heranwachsende? Was bedeutet Einsamkeit in einer vernetzten Welt? Was bedeutet das Fehlen an „Dritten Orten“ in einer Gesellschaft? Usw.
Das Arthur selbst keine Lösungen dafür zu finden scheint, ist eher eine Stärke des Romans, dessen Leerstellen zum Nachdenken einladen.
Das Mitfiebern mir Arthur, vielleicht doch etwas Glück und Zufriedenheit für sein Leben zu finden, wirkt auf die Lesenden aber womöglich auch als Spiegel. Denn hier werden die eigenen Erwartungen und Wünsche für das Leben transparent wirksam, weil sie plötzlich als Norm, was ein glückliches Leben ausmacht, angelegt werden.

Sein kurzer Debutroman „Hitze“ hatte mich vor zwei Jahren völlig begeistert. Victor Jestin gelang es, in der Glut eines Sommertags die fiebrige Geschichte eines Pubertierenden zu erzählen, der eine Leiche verschwinden lassen muss. War es da am südfranzösischen Campingplatz eher der Plot, der sich einen Sport daraus machte, haarscharf an der Grenze zum Unrealistischen zu kratzen, ist es hier das Psychogramm eines schüchternen Kindes, der sich als Heranwachsender, später als Mann, ins Tanzen rettet, um seine Phobie vor sozialer Interaktion zu überwinden, das irgendwann einen Nadelstich ins Expressionistische spielt. Genau dieses Spiel macht einen Teil des Reizes beider Bücher aus. Doch „Der Tanzende“ ist weniger dicht, erzählt anhand schlaglichtartiger Episoden. In seiner sprachlichen Unverstelltheit ist es so präzise und meisterhaft, dass ich schnell gemeinsam mit Arthur in der Falle aka der Kleinstadtdisco „La Plage“ sitze, die nicht nur mit leichter Hand das komplizierte Seelenleben des Ich-Erzählers, sondern auch das Spiel von sozialen Codes widerspiegelt, was für uns alle neurotische Normalität ist. Ich werde diesen Autoren im Blick behalten, er ist ein Könner, der bewegen große Wirkung erzielen kann, ohne jeden Protz.

I've seen French writer Victor Jestin described as the new Francoise Sagan (author of Bonjour Tristesse) and that comparison rings true for me. There's an aloofness and an intensity to both of their writing that belies the intimacy they create with the reader through storytelling.
I read and really enjoyed Victor Jestin's debut novel Heatwave - a really intense little novel about a murder on a French campsite.
Jestin's sophomore novel Dancefloor is even more intense, dark and strange, but just as compelling.
Arthur is a middle aged man obsessed with his local nightclub The Beach. He's been going there since his late teenage years, and it's a place where he feels utterly uninhibited, able to express himself purely and physically through the medium of dance music.
Everything about The Beach, from the building itself to the dancefloor, the banquettes, the bar, the staff and the general atmosphere, is keenly observed and described, bringing the reader right into the club and feeling the beat of the music.
Arthur is a really tragic character who you can't help feeling sorry for, with his failed relationships and lonely life built around his evenings spent at the club where he remains largely anonymous. Even the staff are worried about him as The Beach's days as a nightclub come to an end, with clubs everywhere closing.
It's one of those books where it's hard to look away but also hard to read without cringing. The way in which Jestin (and marvellous translator Sam Taylor) conjure up those feelings in a reader is something I only admire. Not a book that everyone will enjoy but if, like me, you enjoy a weird little book from time to time, this might be for you. 4/5 stars

I liked it but didn't love it. I was also expecting something a little different from the premise of the book. It did get a little repetitive for my tastes but I liked reading how he longed for a connection and how much a place can mean to someone and just wanting to find that something.

Amazing! Dancefloor begins with Arthur an awkward underage teen on his first trip to a nightclub called The Beach. Each chapter of the novel jumps a few years ahead as Arthur continues to visit The Beach, meeting a cast of characters along the way, becoming a better dancer, meeting women but never moving on into the relationship he so desires. His life is empty and meaningless outside the club.
Dancefloor won’t be for everyone. There’s not really any plot, just an advancement of the same lonely life, and Arthur is such an anti-hero it’s hard to fully love him. And yet I really cared about him finding happiness.
Victor Jestin blew me away with his novel Heatwave and Dancefloor is just as good. Both novels are so skilfully structured and have wonderful endings that leave you on an emotional cliffhanger. I’ve found a new favourite writer!

Read in a single sitting. So laser targeted on my interests and who I am as a person that it would be impossible for me not to love it. Wish it was longer, was hoping for an epilogue beyond the slight rug-pull of an ending but, mostly - a perfect experience for me specifically. Incredibly well observed, sad, bitterly funny in places - made me think about Naive. Super but with dance-pop instead of science, or something.

Read as part of a book club. This is a curious book which traces the life of an elder millennial. In classic French fashion, it's more character than plot focused and the club itself is almost a character. It's a curious tale and the main character is a complete weirdo and yet a good insight into a man who feels disconnected from the world. It's sparsely written and yet it feels completely modern.

I loved Heatwave, Victor Jestin's debut novel and this one - Dancefloor (2025) - is just as good.
By day, Arthur is a shy, awkward loner who struggles with relationships and has a dead end job. By night, he goes to his local nightclub The Beach where he is an electrifying presence on the dancefloor. The novel follows his life from teenager to middle age and the ephemeral, temporary connections he forges under the strobe lights.
Once again the protagonist is a socially anomalous individual and the novel explores modern issues like isolation, a search for meaning, and craving connection. Like its predecessor, Dancefloor is short, tight and an intimate character study. I loved it.

The Beach is the only nightclub in town, a bright yellow cuboid on the docks. For most people it is a place to drink, flirt and hook up. Most people grow out of The Beach; they leave town, have families and pursue careers.
Arthur is not most people.

As the corridor narrowed, I had the sudden sensation that we were entering a factory: that we were going not to a place of dancing and alcohol, but to work amidst the stench of coal dust.

There were times in my early twenties when I went out dancing. But they were discrete events, not a hobby.
I was always into electronic music as a child. I think that’s partly why I felt such an immediate connection to Amelie Lens hearing her mixes in November 2024. Seeing her live allowed something to be expressed that didn't have an outlet for so long.
I considered clubbing now in the same way I considered going to the gym could be social with a physical element which I love so much. But it feels contrived unless it's a specific artist I want to see.
But there is a symbiosis to it all: see Daria Kolosova, go get a new outfit from Jac + Jack, find out one of the staff there is a techno DJ, travel to a city literally just to see Amelie Lens, even feel a different sort of emotional regulation through the music I listen to.
I cried so much reading this. Arthur is an extreme character and I don't identify with him being stuck in a small town with no ambition going to the same place again and again thinking the confidence it gives him will materialise an intimate relationship.
But I tell a friend at dinner 'I do notice myself looping through the same places'. There are many. There are deep contextual relationships, though perhaps sometimes confined. 'But those are just routines,' she says.
I guess I feel a need for growth or challenge.
There comes a time when you want to scream at Arthur, 'go!'
I created the life I always wanted; a stable, social base to be expressive and free. So what am I going to do with it?

'I don't know what you do when you're not here - during the daytime, I mean - because we've never talked about that.
But I'm not naïve. I know people like you are unusual. And you're more extreme than the others... I just feel like you're giving up on so many things. And I think someone as kind and gentle as you... Sometimes it just bothers me that your whole life seems to be centred on this club. You could have so much more! You could find a job you like ... Fall in love...
Start a family ... Or go on a trip! Around the world, you know? I'd be so happy for you!
She fell silent. Her eyes were glistening. She was waiting for me to react, but I didn't know what to say.
In short, get out there, deepen your relationships, expand them. You don't honour your attachment to a place by depending solely upon it. It is a foundation.

Ihm fehlte einfach die Fähigkeit, sinnvolle Sätze zu formen und Fragen zu stellen. Zwar konnte er andere fragen, wie es ihnen geht, aber danach verlor er das Gespür dafür, wie ein richtiges Gespräch zu führen ist.
Diese Unsicherheit begleitete ihn durch sein gesamtes Leben. Mit 25 Jahren hatte er noch immer kein Mädchen geküsst.
Eines Tages besuchte er zum ersten Mal einen Club namens „La Plage“. Anfangs traute er sich nicht, auf die Tanzfläche zu gehen – sein Taktgefühl war genauso wenig ausgeprägt wie seine Small-Talk-Kompetenzen. Doch ein Bekannter, namens Wassim, zeigte ihm, wie er sich bewegen sollte.

Vielleicht war es auch mein Mutterinstinkt, der Arthur am liebsten wachrütteln und beschützen wollte.
Ein stimmiges Buch von Anfang bis Ende, das ich euch gerne empfehlen möchte.

I really enjoyed this and think the concept was super unique.
I'm super conflicted about Arthur as a character. As a young adult, it was easy to feel sympathy - maybe even empathy - for him and his awkwardness, and his somewhat failing attempts to fit in. Seeing that, it makes it so difficult to comprehend how I feel about his character as he got older. When you're clubbing and you see an older guy, you instinctively back away, go to the opposite side away from the dodgy guy who's too old to be there. Reading this experience from the other perspective was quite uncomfortable? Or maybe too insightful? I'm not sure how to word it. The immediate response is to consider Arthur a bit of a weirdo, but I still feel a sort of misplaced sympathy for him, just in a different way than I did before.
Ultimately, my conflicted feelings about his character are probably why I like this book. It was written so cleverly, and made me appreciate aging and adulthood in a way that isn't wholly disconnected from youth - particularly through an extreme case like Arthur's.

Arthur est un homme plutôt introverti et solitaire. Sa première entrée en boite de nuit, « La Plage », à l’adolescence, est plus un calvaire qu’autre chose. Pourtant il en deviendra l’un des piliers, la fréquentant toujours assidument plus de vingt ans plus tard.
Au rythme de ses rencontres, amoureuses, sexuelles, c’est sa personnalité qui se dévoile par petites touches, avec une grande pudeur. C’est ce que j’ai aimé dans ce roman, la pudeur de l’intime où l’important se dessine entre les lignes.
Après La Chaleur, prix Femina des Lycéens en 2019, premier roman que j’avais déjà beaucoup aimé, Victor Jestin confirme ici, à travers une écriture simple mais juste, sa description d’un héros sensible, en peine avec les relations sociales. Une masculinité tout en douceur qui s’affirme dans une ultra moderne solitude assumée. Un très beau texte.
