A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John

An in-depth biography that closely examines the superstar's multi-faceted career, personal life, advocacy, and legacy.

Olivia Newton-John was one of the biggest and most iconic global pop stars in history with estimated record sales of over 100 million and starring roles in several films, including Grease and Xanadu. Her hit “Physical” was ranked by Billboard as the most popular single of the 1980s. Behind all of this glitz and glamor was an extremely strong, kind, and resilient person with an unfailing, positive attitude in the face of personal tragedies and setbacks. For decades, she bravely and publicly battled breast cancer while continuing her career and advocated for environmental issues, animal rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.

This biography, based on extensive archival research and original interviews with many of her friends and associates, reveals the real person who was Olivia Newton-John. Matthew Hild provides many never-before-shared insights into the star's life, including her humanitarianism and personal struggles, and dives deeply into her many famous records and lesser-known work, from her early start in Australia all the way to her last recording – a moving duet of “Jolene” with Dolly Parton.

This was an ARC from NetGalley. Unfortunately there were too many typos in it. I understand this is a rough, unedited draft, but I couldn't read it. I was so painstakingly slow that I would lose interest and develop a headache. Perhaps the final cut would be easier.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

i had hoped it would be a biography on olivia newton john and though there were some bits not enough it went into great deal about her music career which again is interesting but the detail was a bit to heavy

all in all if you can bear to read through names and names of people who backed her in the band then go for it but if you are interested more in the life of olivia newton john this maybe wont be what you are looking for

A Little More Love, The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John,
Matthew Hild, Bloomsbury Academic, May 2026.

Thank you NetGalley and Bloomsbury Academic for providing me with this uncorrected proof for review.

Although the major expansion in Olivia Newton-John’s career took place after she left Australia, the early section of this biography set in Australia and Olivia Newton-John’s links with Australian identities gives it a strongly Australian feel. Later, it is the story of successes in the UK and America, introducing a host of songs and identities, and with Koala Blue opening, the birth of her daughter and visits to Australia, a return to Australian themes. Hild’s suggestion that Newton-John was far more than ‘nice’, the description with which she is often associated, remains the pattern for this biography. It mirrors Newton-John’s charming persona but, like the engaging person she was, the biography is far more than a nice story about a nice entertainer.

The story of Newton-John’s successes, Australian, British and American makes interesting reading, along with the many named songs with which she was successful to varying degrees. Her own writing, covers and material written for her are covered in detail. So, too, are her relationships with other singers, groups with whom she appeared and band members. Grease and her other films are discussed. Newton-John’s enduring decency and niceness, returned to at the end of the book, outlived Gease which marked her fictional change from a ‘goody two shoes’ as she commented at one time, to a markedly different character.

Her personal relationships also provide a flavour of the woman she was. Her early love, Australian Ian Turpie, provides a look at the young Olivia with both love and a career on her mind. She remained friends with him, and his wife too. Her other long-lasting relationships and marriages are dealt sympathetically, and there are detailed accounts of her feelings and beliefs throughout the period in which marriage was on the mind of interviewers. Hild reflects upon the way in which Olivia Newton-John dealt with her diagnosis of cancer, the remission years and her final discussions with friends, highlighting her work on cancer awareness.

On the broader stage, Hild examines the way in which Newton-John’s entry (and triumph) to the country and western musical scene was received. He also raises the way in which her physical appearance impacted the way her music was received. There is a thoughtful observation on the value of popular music and Newton-John’s self-confident approach to producing music that made people want to listen. Part of the appeal of this biography also lies in the way in which topics seemingly specific to Newton-John, such as the role of management or her problems with one recording company, become part of a wider history of the business.

The acknowledgements provide the most significant information about the way the work evolved. Conversations and emails with a host of friends and associates or their relatives; publicly available interviews with Olivia Newton-John, her family and friends made an important contribution to Hild’s ability to combine a thoughtful and intimate approach to his work with considerable detail about the processes, successes and disappointments of Newton-John’s career. There are photos, a select bibliography, an index and brief notes for each chapter.

How much you enjoy this biography of Olivia Newton-John is probably going to depend on whether you are most interested in her career or her personal life. If it’s her career, then this is an excellent biography with a great deal of detail. If you’re more interested in her personal life, however, you’ll probably find this lacking.

Hild relates Newton-John’s life from her birth in 1948 to her death in 2022. Although he examines both her personal and professional lives, the vast weight of detail is in the discussion of her professional life.

Indeed, at times the discussion of track listings and writers and other such details gets into such nitty gritty that it bogs the narrative down somewhat. Even the most dedicated fan might find this hard going at times.

I would consider myself a mid-range fan; I’ve always enjoyed her music, and have a reasonable awareness of her personal and professional lives, without being particularly expert. Although there were no great revelations about her professional life, there were many interesting details and sidelights which captured me.

Like many biographers, Hild faces the challenge that Newton-John has died, and so could not be interviewed. It appears that he interviewed her for a biography of Andy Gibb, but never for this biography of herself. Given that Newton-John died at 73, it is not terribly surprising that many of her family and contemporaries have also passed on.

However, there’s quite a few who are still around, and it’s puzzling that Hild does not appear to have interviewed any of them: for example, her husband at the time of her death, her daughter, or Bruce Welch, who was very significant in both her early career and her personal life. These omissions seem odd, and it contributes to the shallowness with which Hild explores Newton-John’s personal life. It is of course possible that they were approached and chose not to participate. In that case, a brief explanation would have been helpful.

The majority of the biography appears to have been reconstructed from newspaper or magazine articles, and old television and radio recordings. The majority of the interviews conducted are with people who don’t seem that close to her.

The narrative tone is dry and factual. I imagine that Hild was aiming for a degree of objectivity. However, the result drains some life out of the story. Surely Newton-John felt joy or excitement at some of her career achievements? Or perhaps initial disappointment at failures? None of this comes across particularly well. Newton-John may well have been even-tempered, but she comes across as almost emotionless in many parts of this. There was no real spirit or personality to the writing.

In short, the subject of this biography never really comes to life. And if you are interested in finding out more about her personally, you’ll probably find this more frustrating than satisfying. However, if you’re looking for a lot of detail about her career, this is a great resource. And if you’re looking for just a light overview of both, it provides that too. Although a little disappointing, this was not a waste of time.

I've been an Olivia fan since I was 11 years old! Once I saw this new book was available I just had to request it!

I was skeptical at first. What could I learn that is new? Would the author do justice to this extraordinary and special person? A big YES is the answer!

There is a heavy load of information on her career and music. Details right from the start about songs and why and how they were chosen for her. The author interviewed many of the past musicians who toured with her and worked with her in the studio. It was interesting to hear direct quotes from people in her past that knew her. Some on a friendly level and some on a professional level. I got a clear picture as to the real woman that she was. I commend that the author interviewed so many different people and not just the same ones that the regular fans all know about.

I feel this book portrays her as a real person that wasn't perfect (although very close 😉) but always sweet and kind. Her voice was beautiful but her humanitarian work with animals and wildlife, the environment and cancer really came first in her later years. However, she always said the most important thing in her life was her daughter Chloe and that was very evident. Olivia was special and one of those people that only comes around once in awhile.

"If I'd never met an earth angel, I would say that Olivia Newton-John was one of those. She was definitely an earth angel in every sense of the word, her looks as well as her demeanor. She just had that spirit of goodness in her."👼
-Stella Parton

If you're a fan you'll love this one due to all the musical content. I highly recommend it!

As a child of the 1970's/1980's there was no escaping Olivia Newton -John so she'll always have a special place in my heart, so this was a lovely read that gives you an overview of her career and personal life and I learnt so much more about her as a person other than what I already knew.

It covers all her life, the music, the person and the films and also shows her family history and what was going on behind the scenes at various stages in her career. It was interesting to read about how she got into her career and how she reacted when success came her way and how she dealt with the fame. She comes across as a really sweet person, very loyal but also very family orientated but also very determined.

It was fascinating to read the thoughts of others who worked with her and seeing the impact she had on them as people and it shares the high and lows of her personal and professional life as life didn't always run smoothly for her. I just found this to be a really informative and well written and has me digging out my old vinyl of hers to listen to them all again!

A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John was an enjoyable read for me. I’ve been a superfan of Olivia Newton-John for many years, so I really enjoyed hearing the details and stories behind some of my favorite albums and songs.
Those details, however, may not be as interesting to readers who primarily know Olivia from Grease or Physical. The book’s title also felt misleading to me. In my opinion, this book was less about her life and legacy and more about her career.
If you’re looking to learn more about Olivia Newton-John’s personal life, I would recommend reading her autobiography, which tells her story from her own perspective.

Thank you to Bloomsbury Academic and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy, review is my own.

Author, Mathew Hild, captures Olivia’s essence and I really enjoyed this. I think of her often and her impact on my film and music and while I have heard a few stories, I liked just reading about her life and this movie really made me feel like I was reading an anthology of a person.

A must read for biography lovers.

This book provides a detailed account of Olivia Newton-John's career as well as her advocacy for cancer treatment and research, environmental causes, animal rights, LGBTQ rights, and more. The book portrays her as a very kind but also very strong person who persevered in the face of many rough challenges. The author interviewed many people who worked with and knew her who never had gotten much of an opportunity to talk about her publicly before. Very informative and enlightening.

Let's start with the print size: too small. No color pictures in a book about such an iconic artist. The content was a little drab with too many references to people other than Olivia Newton-John. I almost gave up on this book.

As a long-time Olivia Newton-John fan, I was eager to read this biography. I learned some new things and was impressed by the number of people behind the scenes the author interviewed. But I have to say it reads like a music trade magazine interview or in-depth story. Olivia, the human being, still seems distant. Aesthetically, the book is disappointing. The photos are not reproduced well and the font and page layout are textbook like. A step in the right direction in terms of a biography but she deserves more.
