The fourth (and final) installment in The Thorpe Sisters series...

Phyllis Thorpe
is the youngest of four sisters and has spent her entire life living under their shadow. From being a little girl, she always had them around to look after her, to play with, to inspire her.

But one by one, the girls start to leave Thorpe Hall to start their own lives, leaving Phyllis behind, and the cottage has never felt so empty.

Reader, you may know her fate but do you know her history?

After finishing this book I can actually say it was my favourite. Phyllis is the last book in the thorpe sisters novellas and I can say it got me so emotional.

Faith has written this series so perfectly and I felt such a strong connection to all the sisters! Each individual sister has such amazing depth into their character and I honestly think Faith has such a strong point of writing historical novellas and pulling you in!

After knowing what happens to Phyllis throughout the series reading her book knowing the outcome was so emotional and Faith was really able to bring that out of the book.

I really enjoy when faith refers to the reader as it adds such a personalisation to the story and it really drives home the timing of these novellas!

I highly recommend reading this series as it really has become one of my favourite series of all time!

MY FAVOURITE BOOK IN THE THORPE SISTERS SERIES!!!!

oh my god it felt so good to be back in this world after reading books 1-3! I could already feel that it was going to be a little heavier I won’t say why because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read it but if you know you know.

I loved getting snippets of what we already knew happened but from Phyllis’ perspective and then the addition of new information from Phyllis was so well balanced.

Can we all agree that Nathaniel is a horrible person (but written purposely to be that way which made him the perfect villain for this series)

I actually love Phyllis so much!!! The scene talking about the soup kitchen was so wholesome and the way she talks about helping others who need it filled my heart with so much joy she is just such a wonderful character.

I had to take a couple of hours after reading that last chapter and epilogue because wow.. I cried my eyes out. I’ve built such a connection to these characters but to go through the events through Phyllis’ perspective has been my favourite of them all! The ending although I knew it was coming from the previous books, I was not prepared for that. Definitely my favourite book of the series!!! Well done Faith you’ve truly written a masterpiece.

Phyllis’ book is book four of the Thorpe sisters series by Faith Fawcett. A group of novellas written back in the Regency era - think Bridgerton but for teens.

The stories are told in third person, much like someone telling you a story rather than you reading it yourself!

Upon reading the first three books in the series; Felicity, Adelaide and Kitty, they all touch upon subjects that were hard during those times, and if you have read those books much like I have then you know full well how this story will end.

What an emotional rollercoaster this book took me on, reading about a young girl at the age of five, grow through life with older siblings. There was a sense of loneliness in this book but there were some happy moments too.

This is the first book that has ever made me cry and it was that very last chapter that really tugged on my heartstrings, but as painful as it was to read (in an emotional way) I’m so glad I pushed on through it.

This was SUCH a good book! I may or may not have cried at the end. This series was so amazing, and in my opinion every book has gotten better!

Shout out to the character development as it was great.

Phyllis was such a good character and her growth was immaculate. I won’t give much away but I think the author note at the end says a lot, and you’ll know what I mean when you read it, as you should.

Well done Faith!

Honestly what a beautiful book with a beautiful story! Easily a 5 star read. Seeing it from Phyllis’ perspective brought a whole different spin on the stories we heard about in books 1-3. I honestly couldn’t put this book down, from start to finish you got all of the emotions and it really did feel like reading a journal, or as if us, the reader, was there living it besides them.
This is a book I will always recommend to others. Truly beautiful

This was a 3.5 star read for me. It was a really lovely conclusion to the Thorpe Sisters series, and I cannot wait to have a hardback collection of all four books one day sitting on my shelf!

I enjoyed reading this one, especially towards the end, even though I found the start a little slow. I think it was always going to be a more challenging book to write due to the fact we know exactly where Phyllis' story will end, so I commend Faith on still managing to make the book feel engaging and fresh, especially during scenes we've already encountered from different perspectives! I'd love to see her tackle more historical fiction in this way, with a commentary on past society and its impact on young British women, with maybe even some integration of more intersectional ideas surrounding race and class, as a lot has already been written (especially in the YA space) on the treatment of young middle class white women in the Regency era.

Partially, I don't think I was as pulled into the story as I was with book three; knowing the ending meant the book had no real consistent plotline or arc, which is, I think, very much the nature of a novella with this purpose, so little could be done to help that. Though it took me a little longer to get stuck in, I still really enjoyed my time reading, completing most of the book in two sittings, which I think says a lot about Faith's storytelling. I've always thought her quick-paced and whimsical style is her biggest skill as a writer, very Jacqueline Wilson-esque. It's something a lot of writers don't have, but, and means that Faith manages to write quickly and for long periods of time without getting bogged down by all of the excess information. It can mean that backstory is lacking, but works in this sense, as the entire purpose of this story was to build on our prior knowledge of the Thorpe sisters. As you will see in a moment, there are far more stories to come from this series, and I can't wait to see which she chooses to follow next!

My only major gripe was the development of the narrator in this book. This is such a shame, as I felt it was initially done very delicately, and is a lovely literary device in so many historical tales! This unnamed narrator felt very much omniscient throughout the series, rearing their head a little too much in book three, as mentioned in my last review, rather than seeming like a physical being, or being associated with the "writer" behind the series. I wasn't a fan of how much the narrator shared their own life experiences in this one, as it came across narcissistic, or tried to build their own backstory or subplot through references to typing up the story, or finding it too emotional to continue, or giving unnecessary political commentary that felt out of place and heavy handed. I could tell, through my own knowledge, that the narrator was indeed Faith, which took me out of the world. To me, this choice was too obviously emanating the style of Lemony Snicket, which wouldn't be such a problem if this style was consistent throughout the series or was contextualised at the start of book one.

If you really enjoyed the rest of the series, as I did, then I'm sure you'll have a blast reading this one. There were so many lovely, touching moments and scenes. I think it'll be really special to see the books tied up in one collection... and at this point, I think any reader would devour a book about Aunt Augusta, so I'm holding out for that one! Faith, congratulations on a gorgeous end to the series.
