A Bit of Pride, A Bit of Prejudice: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
There are few things seventeen-year-old Lizzy Bennet enjoys more than a long walk, a good book, and a bathe in the sea. She has the pleasure of enjoying all these things when she spends the summer of 1808 in Brighton, in the company of the Gardiners and her sister Jane.

Spirited, outspoken, and obstinate, young Elizabeth has different interests from most gentlemen’s daughters, such as helping her uncle, Dr Edward Gardiner, with his patients, and swimming in the sea late at night.
Such inclinations change her life forever when she happens upon a stranger at the most unexpected time and in the most unexpected place — not just once but twice. At each such encounter, one of them saves the other’s life.

Three years later, Elizabeth reunites with the gentleman she now knows to be Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley, when his friend, Mr Charles Bingley, lets Netherfield Park.
Time has turned Elizabeth from a young girl of seventeen — still a child yet — into a young woman who is equally spirited, outspoken, and obstinate, and Mr Darcy into a gentleman who is equally handsome but prouder and more arrogant than Elizabeth remembers.

While fond memories and mutual gratitude between them remain, the complexity of new and powerful feelings like love and passion, which neither knows how to handle, will cause misunderstandings, prejudice, struggles, and occasional breaches of society’s rules of decorum.

All the other characters from canon — family, friends, enemies — are also present in the tale, interfering with Elizabeth and Darcy’s latest quest for happiness.

The story contains some romantic scenes and descriptions of sensations that are better suited for a mature audience. Also, there are two explicit love scenes at the end of the book, after Elizabeth and Mr Darcy got married. These are recommended for a mature audience only, but they can be skipped by the readers who prefer so, without altering the enjoyment of the story.

About the ‘Hot Mush Series’: For almost twenty years, Lory Lilian has been called ‘The Queen of Hot Mush’ within the JAFF community. The ‘Hot Mush Series’ is recommended for those who enjoy hot romance. It contains descriptive, intimate scenes, but they are not graphic or vulgar.

Not an arrogant Darcy

Not having Darcy being very arrogant is a nice change. But he still isn’t able to figure out what’s happening makes for different road to the HEA.

Drop from 5 stars to 4 because the Wickham arc didn’t ring true for me. Wickham is very awful and Darcy doesn’t react like he isn’t awful. If Jane knew everything about Wickham she would have suggested on hanging him. 😅

I love Lory Lilian's variations and this one was not the exception.
I really like how Lizzy and Darcy meet 3 years before the start of P&P, giving more context to their relationship and that Darcy is not arrogant.
There are scenes which I was not expecting and they work really well.
I read this one while traveling in England and it was a really good companion.
