Vasara, kai tobulai klydome

Rate this book

Cynthia St. Aubin

USA Today bestselling author Cynthia St. Aubin wrote her first play at age eight and made her brothers perform it for the admission price of gum wrappers. A steal, considering she provided the wrappers in advance. Though her early work debuted to mixed reviews, she never quite gave up on the writing thing, even while earning a mostly useless master's degree in art history and taking her turn as a cube monkey in the corporate warren.

Because the voices in her head kept talking to her, and they discourage drinking at work, she started writing instead. When she's not standing in front of the fridge eating cheese, she's hard at work figuring out which mythological, art historical, or paranormal friends to play with next. She lives in Colorado with the love of her life and three surly cats.

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes by Cynthia St Aubin
Harlequin Afterglow books. Contemporary sizzling romance. Mental issues troupe.
Lark Woolley was in her first semester of medical school at Dartmouth when she had a breakdown. She couldn’t take the perfect predetermined life anymore. Enduring panic attacks and therapy she is hiding out in her parents’ basement, with a looming deadline of her spot in the medical program being threatened. What does she want to do? How will she figure out her future? Trying to help, Lark’s mother enrolls her in an art class at the local community college.
Nick Hoffman is teaching an art class as a favor to his mother and is surprised by Lark in his classroom. They had a lab class together back in high school and he knows she’s a gifted artist but apparently having some issues now. Lark makes friends with the southern-fried divorcees in the class and discovers afternoon margaritas, supportive women, and more of Nick than is appropriate for class!

A bit on the darker side with Lark’s crisis management, nevertheless, this romance is sizzling and sexy as advertised for this new Harlequin line.
The conversations and interactions on the party bus of the field trip were absolutely priceless. Sexy temptations, shots, and a mother embarrassing her adult son had me reading their ride to Baltimore multiple times. So entertaining.
An ending that will have you sighing in satisfaction.

Cute and fun. Cynthia’s writing to me is reminiscent of Annabel mognahan’s to me so I ate it up. Nick is dreamy and I swooned over him. Lark was a little harder to connect and the behavior of her parent’s didn’t always make sense or remain true to their characters. Overall though this was enjoyable to read and I’d def read this author again.

I liked the mental health representation. I enjoyed both Lark and Nick’s individual storylines but their romance fell a bit flat for me. There was just not enough build up or growth. I wish instead of skipping time at the end we had had a little bit of their individual growth as well. Especially since Lark changed a lot.
I almost wish this wasn’t dual pov. I think if it had just been Lark and more about her journey dealing with depression that I might have enjoyed it more.

It was a nice and cozy read. Despite the above, I did have a nice time reading it. Nick’s mom and the ladies in art class were a lot of fun. I liked the way they spoke about art as well. It was beautiful.

A whole lot of nothing. Empty.
I wanted these things but didn't get them:
- More detail on Reese, their relationship, their almost engagement etc
- More emotional and cutesie dates between Lark and Nick
- Why does Lark have no female friends her age!! Fix this.
It was just physical insta love book with a reference to a bad past which is never expanded on.

3.5⭐️

From the outside, Lark has the perfect life. She was prom queen, valedictorian of her college and now she is a medical student at an Ivy League university. However, after suffering from a public mental breakdown, she is taking time off from medical school and is unable to leave her parents basement. When her mom suggests that she should take an art class at the local community college, Lark does not expect her teacher to be Nick: former classmate and high school “bad boy”. Nick is also taking a break from his life in New York City and the two end up helping each other discover what they really want out of life.

This was a fun and easy summer read! There were lots of interesting characters and I loved the mental health representation. I enjoyed this book, but I will say that the pacing was a little fast in the second half of the book. Overall, this was a sweet, entertaining story.

Thank you to Cynthia St. Aubin, Harlequin Romance and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story was beautiful. Lark and Nick had such good chemistry. I really liked the representation of Larks struggles with her mental health, and panic attacks. I felt like they were portrayed very accurately. I loved how caring and attentive Nick was and how he respected Lark and gave her space to work on herself and get into a healthy space.

A sweet and steamy story about figuring out what you really want and how to go out and get it. Lark and Nick are relatable characters and their chemistry is great. And did I mention it's steamy? A perfect read for summer ;)

I feel like all the issues I had with the other book I'd read from this author ( Trapped with Temptation ) were fixed here--the longer page count definitely helped! <3

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes is a delightful romantic comedy that captured my heart. Lark Woodley, once the perfect girl in Spring Valley, is now trying to rebuild her life after a major breakdown. The story beautifully portrays her journey of self-discovery and healing. The highlight of her transformation is the community art class taught by Nick Hoffman, her high school crush who appreciates her for who she truly is, flaws and all. Their developing relationship is both heartwarming and spicy and had me rooting for them throughout the book. The vibrant cast of characters, from the quirky Southern divorcées to the endearing Nick, adds depth and humor to the story. Cynthia St. Aubin’s writing is engaging and authentic, making it easy to root for Lark as she learns to embrace imperfection. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a heartfelt, feel-good summer read

Very grateful to the publisher @ for my copy , opinions are my own

I really wanted to love this book. There were moments where it was so close and then there would be a typo or repeated phrases that didn’t make sense (not that I can spell or grammar check myself but I’m not publishing a book). The plot and the characters were lovely. I just wish it had been edited a little better.

✨ARC Review✨

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes was *almost* also the perfect book. This adorable romantic comedy follows Lark, a medschool dropout, who is back living at her parents and struggling to find herself again. Her worried mother in an act of desperation signs Lark up for an art class at the local community college that to Lark’s surprise is taught by an old classmate, Nick. Nick can tell right away that the Lark in front of him is not the girl he knew, but a shell of her former himself and despite himself, he’s desperate to make her come alive again, even if they only have the summer ☀️

I really loved Lark’s character and found lots of myself in her, especially the pressures she feels to be exactly what everyone else wants her to be. And the chemistry between Lark and Nick ?? 🥵🥵 I was obsessed with every single thing about their relationship from start to finish. Honestly, the only reason this book isn’t 5 ⭐️ for me is that the ending felt a little rushed; it was a great ending but I wish we got just a littttttle more before it ended.

Here are some of what you can look forward to if you read this book (which you really really should):

🎨 Former High School Classmates
🎨 Slow burn
🎨 Hometown Summer Fling
🎨 Found family
🎨 Dorky in the streets, freaky in the sheets MMC
🎨 Perfectionist learning to let go FFM
🎨 Mental Health Rep

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes will be coming in HOT (😏🥵) June 25/24

Thank you Afterglow Books by Harlequin & netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A cute, easy summer read! Nick and Lark had amazing chemistry from the very start which had me intrigued till the very end. I had minor issues with this book, mainly with the last 50%. Things felt a bit rushed and unresolved. I had high hopes going into this book but in the end, it fell a bit flat for me. However, I still think it was a good book, especially if you're looking for a quick summer read!

Lark has struggled after high school. When she turns up to Nick's community art class, he is stunned to see her in the shape she is in. Gone is the popular outgoing girl he used to know. Nick knows she is still in there and over the course of the summer, he decides to pull her back out.

This was an easy to read romance, perfect for a summer beach read! It was both steamy and sweet with characters who were both likeable. There was also great mental health representation in the story and fantastic side characters.

“I want to be strong enough to swim by someone’s side, not pull them under because I’m drowning.”

This was such an authentic and relatable book! It is truly a love story to anyone who is still trying to figure out what they want in life.

We meet Lark, former high school darling, during her extended hiatus after a single semester of medical school, following in the footsteps of her parents, husband-wife OBGYNs with their own health clinic. She has 27 days to decide whether she’ll go back to med school in the fall or surrender her highly coveted spot. During this time, her parents are controlling her schedule, treating her like a teenager again, waiting for her to choose the right path (aka what they want) or fall on her face again. One of the only things they’ll allow her to do during this time is take a community art class. Little does she know, the art class is taught by the rebel from her school days, Nick.

As a first daughter, former Valedictorian, perfectionist myself, I could totally relate to Lark and her breakdown. She was incredibly relatable and a perfect example of what it feels like to have your world crash around you because of things small and large. Some of the Lark quotes that really resonated with me were:

Treacherous tears blurred her vision. She hated that small oversights often had the power to unstitch her.

How had she become so self-critical that anything other than complete triumph looked like total failure?

Meanwhile, Nick, former high school rebel and all-around tech nerd, was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his business: adapt to what his partner wanted and forgo the moral implications or stand up from himself and his technology to be used the way he intended. Even while dealing with his own stuff, Nick was such a steady presence for both Lark and the reader. Having pined for her in high school and being a patient man who watches and listens carefully, he understood Lark so much better than anyone else did, including herself. There were so many moments where he truly showed that he knew her and what she needed, from helping being a rebel during the summer to simply holding her shaking leg under a coffee table as a small comfort.

My favorite Nick line to Lark was for sure:

“Pep talk or pretend it never happened?”

Their interactions together really made this feel like a spiced up YA novel, in the best ways possible! We got all the giddy feelings and cozy exchanges of a YA paired with some sexy times and it was to die for!

Speaking of sexy times, there were quite a few scenes that had me shrieking while reading this, having snuck up on me. The two that come to mind were when Lark was on the phone with her mom and Nick was…not keeping his hands to himself. I don’t know why, but that has ALWAYS been super sexy to me. I must be a secret exhibitionist 😈

The second was when Nick proceeded to take her from behind in front of a mirror while grabbing her throat and whispering things to her. SIR!! I CANNOT READ THIS AFTER BEING SHOWN HOW SWEET YOU ARE. YOU ARE MAKING IT HARD TO NOT LOVE YOU!

I would be remiss to mention how much I loved the side characters Tammy and Linda who really acted as motherly figures, or let’s say “cool aunts”, to both Lark and Nick. They were hilarious but totally there for them when needed.

This is the perfect book to kick off summer!

Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin, and Cynthia St. Aubin for a copy of this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed The Summer of Perfect Mistakes. It takes a lot for me like romance books because there are just so many that are not written well, but the pacing, storytelling, and the character development was fantastic. I appreciate that the author created characters who are so relatable. She grew up with parents who achieved a lot and held her to the same standard. Everyone in her town knew Lark as this "perfect girl", but really she is just a people pleaser. Because of this, she never really got to know herself and what she wants out of life. As a high-functioning anxious person who is also a perfectionist, I related a lot to Lark. Nick, on the other hand, seems to have it together, but he's also a people pleaser who has been afraid to pursue what he really wants. They really are two sides of the same coin.

I think that this is a perfect read for many young adults, and even older ones, as it touches on the many difficulties that we face as we try to figure out ourselves and our place in the world.

A fantastic, summer themed, beach read.

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes was an easy short read, that carefully explored heavier topics. I felt that the author perfectly captured Larks emotions. I could feel her fear of disappointing her parents, and wanted to hug her during her depressive episodes. As a reader, I felt incredibly proud of her for taking her life into her own hands and doing what made her happy. And Nick, oh Nick was a perfect MMC; broken in his own right, but mature and respectable. Perfect for each other in every way.

Also notable, the side cast of characters were just as wonderful as Lark and Nick. The “field trip” made me laugh out loud!

🌶️🌶️🌶️ = open door, multiple scenes, descriptive but short

Ahhh i loved this one so much! Lark was such a relatable character and her inner monologues had me cracking up!! Nick was so different than I expected him to he like when we first met him but I loved every single moment of it!!!!
I loved the anxiety representation - it’s not often i see myself into a lot in books and I can appreciate it as someone with anxiety myself. The only that that I would change is when Lark told her parents her decision- their reactions didn’t add up to how I perceived them the entire book, and the epilogue - it needed to be longer!!!

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book!

Nice quick summer read while still having a good balance of character / plot development and romance. On the one hand I would have loved to fully see Lark’s evolution/ transformation at the end, but in a way for this story I think it was the perfect length. Perhaps a follow-up book of Lark’s year away would be a good accompaniment that I’d love to see from the author. All in all I think this story delivered on what it needed to be and was a good and fun read while still providing some depth.

"The Summer of Perfect Mistakes" by Cynthia St. Aubin was an enjoyable story. I loved the storyline and characters. Lark is back home after going through an incident and is fighting depression. She gets signed up for an art class that is being taught by her old classmates, Nick. He is home for the summer and ends up taking Lark home after her mother didn't show up to pick her up from the class. They start hanging out, and Lark finds out she is stronger than she knows. Her mother and father expect her to follow in their footsteps and don't really show her the support she deserves. My favorite part happens at the art exhibit. There were some parts that gave me a good chuckle. I highly recommend reading this book.

The Summer of Perfect Mistakes by Cynthia St. Aubin is currently my top read of the summer! The spice is top notch, the supporting cast is the kinda support we all need, but the main characters shine as they find the person that helps them to understand what they ultimately need most to be the best (but imperfect) versions of themselves.

Lark is deep in the gray when she ends up enrolled in a community art class taught by none other than the kid who played delinquent role to her valedictorian prom queen one back in their high school in Spring Valley. Nick is the reformed delinquent teaching the art class and he is desperate to help Lark out of the corner she has painted herself in.

These two characters find themselves back in Spring Valley due to circumstances that have them questioning the path they are currently on. They have no idea that the summer is going to provide them with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of someone seemingly so different from them as well as themselves.

Mental Health is a major theme with Lark struggling with anxiety and depression. Nick recognizes that Lark has a drive to be perfect and he doesn’t set out to “fix” her but rather help her recognize that it is ok to not be perfect.

The ending of this book is beyond satisfying from a romance perspective as well as a mental health perspective. I want a novella with these two characters at a later date because they deserve all the happy in the world!!!

Oh, where do I even start? 🤔 This one was simply not for me. Let me explain…

Based on the genres listed, I expected a young, funny summer romance, but I was sorely mistaken.
It was painstakingly slow.
I don’t mind a spicy scene, but some of the scenes made me feel downright icky – it felt like I was reading about two kids doing it with their mom in the next room!
I’m not quite sure where the 'comedy' part was supposed to be, but I stopped searching for it about 1/4 way in.
If I read the word ‘panties’ one more time... 💀
The mental health rep was great, BUT for a college student and a professor, they were surprisingly immature. I didn’t even mind that both were living with their parents, but the fact that their parents seemed to control every aspect of their lives? Hard pass.
There were two side characters I sort of enjoyed, but that was about it.
By the 150-page mark, I was debating a DNF, but I pushed through. I even debated again around 240 pages, and with this being only 288, I pushed through once again and only confirmed to myself that this definitely wasn’t for me.

Q: Tell me about your bookish ick! Don’t have any? What are you reading today?
