Being a witch doesn’t mean you’re immune to boy problems, as Nina learns when it comes to her crush on David, a new boy at school. Despite David's friendly behavior, Nina finds herself too nervous to talk to him, let alone ask him to the upcoming school dance. That is, until she comes up with a solution—a love potion. Love Potion Commotion is a delightful story that blends everyday middle-school nerves with just the right touch of magic. As the school dance gets closer, Nina wants to invite her new neighbor, and crush David, but she can’t seem to get the words out. Hoping for a little extra help, she secretly bakes a love-potion cupcake. When the family cat, Jinx, eats it instead, the situation quickly slips out of control. Nina and her brother Mateo must work together to fix the chaos and keep her secret from their parents.

The book does an excellent job highlighting the bond between the siblings, and their teamwork feels genuine and relatable. The magical mix-ups are fun to follow, but the heart of the story comes through clearly: being honest, finding your courage, and staying true to yourself are what really matter when you’re trying to make new friends.

If you are looking for a middle school age book on how it’s usually better to just be yourself, look no further. Not only is this a fun, quick read, it spotlights a family of latino witches and how sometimes, not everything can be solved with a spell.

For parents and educators, discussion questions are included and for students, there is a list of writing prompts and vocabulary words and definitions.

This is the first book in The Magical Morrisons series and I look forward to reading more.

I would like to thank Stone Arch Books and NetGalley for a copy. All opinions are my own and my review is voluntarily given. As always, I wish you happy reading!
