I had a hard time getting through this book. I'm not a fan. The book says it’s a memoir, but it can't decide what it really is. It’s part memoir, part self-help, and part confusion about Mr. Wells beliefs and values.
The pure memoir part is good. I enjoyed the storytelling. The self-help part is nothing that hasn't appeared in hundreds of other self-help books. Like the book itself, the values and beliefs are all over the place and I found them to be confusing. Or maybe I should say contradictory.
Wells is guided by the golden rule, yet he has very unkind words about conservative politicians, especially Trump. I couldn’t help but wonder if he would be okay with people using those same words and phrases about him.
He doesn't believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God, but does believe everything that Jesus said. He believes Jesus is his Savior, but not necessarily the incarnate Son of God. I think Jesus actually said he was....
He believes the United States is the greatest country to live in, even though it needs improvement, yet he feel the Make America Great Again movement is wrong, as are the people who believe in the movement. Aren't we talking pretty much the same thing? We need improvement in this country?
He believes in climate change and that we need to do better at controlling it, yet uses wood for fuel and burns cardboard instead of recycling.
This is just a small sample of the inconsistencies in his beliefs that I read and it really just made no sense to me. I felt like he just was talking the talk and not walking the walk about his beliefs and values. If he would have written the usual type of memoir, I may have enjoyed it much better. #GoodreadsGiveaways
