Once upon a time, Emmaline Maddox was my best friend. The girl I found in the woods, bruised and too proud to ask for help. The one I brought tea and peanut butter sandwiches, just to see her smile.
But that was a long time ago—before life got messy. Before I put her little brother in cuffs and watched her shut me out with a look that guts me still.
Now she’s about to lose everything she’s fought for because of some outdated clause in a will and a family feud older than indoor plumbing.
I shouldn’t care. But I do.
So I offer her the only thing I can: a fake marriage to make sure she gets what she’s earned. She says yes, even though I know she doesn’t trust me. Not anymore.
I’ve never stopped wanting to protect her. But what if this time, I want to keep her too?
In a town built on second chances, sometimes the most unexpected hero is the one who’s always been there.
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. Hate to say it, but I didn’t like the h at all. I understand that she grew up with a mean, manipulative mother, but to still be letting that so easily affect you now? She was just too wishy washy for me. Let’s face it, the hero and star of this book was Rubble the dog.
5 Star Review Hero, Unexpected (Gibson Hollow #2) by Kait Nolan
We are back in Gibson Hollow for Emmaline (Em) Maddox and sheriff Bodie Gibson’s story and was an emotional roller coaster of a read it was.
They were once best friends until circumstances tore them apart, their friendship ruined.
After the hurricane, Em is desperate to re open her grandmothers bakery but when the will is read she learns she must be married to inherit.
That’s when her very own knight in shining armour steps up. Bodie offers a marriage of convenience so that she can inherit.
I fell hard and fast for Bodie whom we met in the first book, totally swoon worthy.
Em has had a hard life and it was wonderful to see Bodie stand up and support her. Em’s mother is a real piece of work and I cannot stand her which to me is a sign that the you have really connected with the story that the author wrote.
I loved their journey from childhood friends to lovers.
Once upon a time, Emmaline Bennett found refuge in Bodie Gibson, her childhood secret friend and unwavering confidant. Their once unshakeable bond was strained years ago, but following Bodie’s arrest of her brother, the feud between their families has intensified.
Emmaline has faced an array of challenges in her life, yet she is resolute in her mission to honour her grandmother’s legacy by successfully reopening the family bakery. The recent hurricane may have wreaked havoc on their quaint town, but it only fueled her determination as she invested herself fully into restoring the bakery—a beloved space filled with cherished memories and bright hopes for the future. However, everything changes during the will reading when she learns she must be married to inherit the bakery she has fought tirelessly to save.
In a bold move, Bodie steps up to offer a solution: a fake marriage designed to shield Emmaline from her family's pressures and ensure her dreams remain intact. Despite their rocky history, Bodie’s steadfast sense of duty, coupled with unexpected feelings for Emmaline, compels him to come to her aid in this pivotal moment.
Gibson Hollow is not just a setting; it’s a vibrant, close-knit community alive with colourful characters, from nosy yet well-meaning neighbours to an exuberant troupe of drag queens who bring a refreshing energy to the town’s social fabric. If you're drawn to small-town romances that celebrate strong community ties, rich character dynamics, and the delightful intricacies of relationships, then Gibson Hollow is a place you’ll adore.
The development of Emmaline and Bodie's relationship is nothing short of captivating and is in true Kait Nolan style. As their fake marriage unfolds, their connection deepens, revealing undeniable chemistry and shared laughter. The warmth and camaraderie among the townsfolk create an inviting atmosphere, while Bodie's family adds a delightful layer of wit and humour, ensuring a captivating read from beginning to end. This story promises charm, heart, and a celebration of love in all its forms.
This one was going all well and good until the heroine overhears a conversation, assumes the worst about the hero (who has behaved nothing but hero-like the entire book), and decides to not communicate with the hero. 🙄 This author used to use miscommunication/non-communication all the time in her earlier books and it seemed she was getting away from that, but it’s back in this one.
Still, Kait Nolan (and narrator Amy McFadden) continue to produce some entertaining books that I am always glad to be listening to.
I went into this expecting a suspenseful story, but what I found instead was a deeply heartfelt journey I didn't see coming. Two childhood friends, separated by a painful event, find themselves reconnecting through a fake marriage meant to help Em save her grandmother's bakery.
With her brother up for parole and her own family more than willing to betray her, I was rooting so hard for Em to finally get the happy ending she deserved. Through all the tension and emotional trials, the moments between her and Bodie were the perfect balance of tender and genuine caring.
And my absolute favorite part? Every time Bodie publicly claimed her with a casual "my wife", my heart swooned.
A quirky western North Carolina small mountain town is still rebuilding after flooding from a hurricane. In the midst of revitalization, they have the typical small town problems, often involving livestock gone rogue.
As police chief of Gibson Hollow, Bodie Gibson does his best to serve and protect. When he finds out his childhood friend turned enemy needs to get married in order to save the bakery she's rebuilt, he offers to marry her.
Except Emmeline Maddox is well versed in the feud between their families going back generations. Still, she can’t forget the sweet boy who gave her a safe place to land and dried her tears as a child when things were bad at home. Maybe the two of them can somehow lay the old feud to rest once and for all.
If you love small-town romance with nosey but well-meaning townsfolk, colorful characters, a gaggle of drag queens, and a side of drama, you’ll love everything about Gibson Hollow. Charming, witty, steamy, and heartfelt, you'll enjoy this modern-day Hayfield and McCoy’s romance.
This book is truly an emotional roller coaster. It explores grief, life after crime, family expectations, and the beauty of found family. It’s the kind of story that quietly breaks your heart—and yes, it might make you cry.
Bodie and Emmaline used to be best friends. Secret best friends, actually, because of a long-standing family feud—mostly on Emmaline’s side. Despite the tension between their families, they found comfort in each other. But everything changed the day Bodie arrested Emmaline’s brother.
Her brother wasn’t just her sibling—he was her protector. He shielded her from their chaotic, toxic family and did whatever he had to do to keep them alive, even if it meant doing something illegal because they couldn’t afford to eat. The case was complicated and painful, and it shattered the bond between Bodie and Emmaline. Even though Bodie tried in his own way to look out for her, he knew some lines, once crossed, can’t be undone.
Emmaline comes from what the town considers the “wrong” family. Her last name alone brings judgment and trouble. She grew up with a mother who never truly acted like one, an aunt who carried constant bitterness, and cousins who felt more like strangers than family. The pressure from them—and the resentment over her brother’s arrest—pushed her to believe she needed to stay away from Bodie and his family.
Then tragedy strikes again. Bodie is the one who finds Emmaline’s grandmother’s body. Her grandmother was the only steady light in Em’s life—the woman who truly loved her, who practically raised her when her own mother wouldn’t. The grandmother was cherished by the whole town. Her death sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads Bodie to offer Emmaline a marriage of convenience.
The book doesn’t explicitly spell this out, so this might just be my interpretation—but I believe Bodie has always been in love with Emmaline. Not just in a loyal, friendship kind of way, but in a quiet, romantic way. No matter how cold or distant Em becomes, she is always on his mind. Emmaline, on the other hand, doesn’t start with romantic feelings for Bodie. But through their marriage—through shared grief, shared burdens, and shared healing—her love for him grows naturally and beautifully.
One of the most satisfying parts of the story is watching the growth of Emmaline’s brother and cousins. Her brother eventually comes to understand that none of what happened was Bodie’s fault—he was simply doing his job. The cousins, too, begin to see how pointless and destructive the long-standing feud has been.
Overall, this is a story about forgiveness, healing, and choosing love despite the weight of the past. It’s emotional, layered, and deeply moving.
I received a free ALC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
I love this series, and this new installment is no exception. This delightful marriage of convenience romance follows former secret childhood friends who became enemies due to a centuries-old family feud and an inevitable act with consequences. I particularly love the idyllic small-town atmosphere, the strong bond between the members of the Gibson family, the mischievous Sasspatch Society, and the hilarious group chats. The plot is very well written and brimming with emotion, drama, humor, four-legged companions, and spice. The protagonists and most of the supporting characters are endearing. Emmaline is strong but also insecure because of her toxic mother, and Bode is the unicorn hero everyone dreams of. I loved the way he supported and protected her, and how their fake marriage slowly became real.
About the audiobook:
Amy McFadden and Michael Gallagher delivered a flawless performance as Emmaline and Bode. Their voices brought emotion, depth, warmth, and humor to the story, perfectly capturing the tension, longing, and chemistry between the protagonists, as well as their inner conflicts.
When Emmaline Maddox’s grandmother is found dead months after the flood that devastated Gibson Hollow, her whole life is turned upside down. Emmaline had always thought her grandmother would leave her the house and the bakery where they had lived and worked together. But the house goes to her manipulative mother and aunt, and she will only inherit the bakery if she is married by the end of the probate period. When Chief of Police Bode Gibson hears about this, he offers to marry Emmaline in a sham marriage. He and she used to be best friends, but they had to keep their friendship a secret because of their family feud. However, when Bode arrested her little brother years ago who has been in prison ever since, she ended their friendship and could never forgive him. Nevertheless, Emmaline accepts Bode’s proposal and marries him in secret, much to the dismay of her relatives, and gradually realizes that Bode and the rest of the Gibsons are not the villains she had believed them to be for years…
If you enjoy charming small-town romance audiobooks that are perfectly narrated and packed with conflict, misconceptions, intrigue, heart, humor, and spice, you’re sure to love this one.
Another wonderful installment in the Gibson Hollow series. This is book two in that series, and it doesn’t disappoint. While reading the earlier books will help you understand the commumity and it’s people, this can easily be read as a standalone.
This is a book about a young woman whose mother wields weaponized emotion against her children. Emmaline, her daughter, has suffered grief for years, starting when she was a child. Her only friend back then was a young boy. But things happened, and they become enemies. Not surprising since their families have been feuding for more than a century. When her mother takes off when Emmaline is a teenager, she’s taken in by her grandmother. Her grandmother was a professional baker, and she taught Emmaline everything she knew. Grandma’s will stipulates that in order for Emmaline to keep the bakery, which she’s restored at her own expense following a major flood, she must marry by the time probate is completed. Unfortunately, she has no men in her life.
To her rescue comes Bodie Gibson, the police chief of Gibson’s Hollow. Bodie did something when he was a rookie policeman that affected Emmaline’s life. They turned from friends to enemies. Bodie misses Emmaline, and he proposes a business arrangement that will allow her to keep the bakery. With no other options, Emmaline agrees. Now, will they be able to recover their friendship, and maybe more?
This is a forced marriage, a friends-to-enemies-to-friends-and-lovers scenario. It’s filled with good, welcoming people, and with vengeful family members. There is cruelty and child abuse discussed. Overall, though, this is a story of encouraging support and true love.
I absolutely love the Sasspatch Society. They bring wisdom and humor to the story at the same time. Speaking of humor, the song selection after the livestock incident had me laughing so hard. I won’t go into detail and spoil it for anyone, but they’re wonderful.
If you enjoy strong women, even if they don't know that they're strong, caring men, and dogs so real that you can reach out and pet them, then I think you'll like this story. I loved this book, and I highly recommend it. I highly recommend it.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
Hero, Unexpected is the second book in Kait Nolan’s Gibson Hollow series. Sheriff Bodie Gibson, second eldest of eight siblings, appears to be a stoic sort but truly he is a protector, always has been. Even as a very young teen Bodie watched out for Emmaline Maddox who was the victim of her own mother’s slings and arrows. In fact Marla Maddox had convinced Emmaline that she was unworthy of kindness, of caring, and of love.
The Maddox-Gibson feud was over 100 years old and began when a Gibson was awarded a ribbon for best baked good over a Maddox. The Gibsons pay no attention to the legend but there are Maddox’s that not only carry the grudge but blame the Gibsons for anything that goes wrong for them. But they especially blame Bodie Gibson, then a young patrolman, for arresting Wesley Maddox, Emmaline’s brother, when he was caught red handed transporting stolen goods. Bodie had no idea the then 17 year old would be tried as an adult or that he would be sentenced to over ten years and had felt the weight of that day ever since.
Maddox matriarch Evelyn had gone missing in the flood nine months ago. The first time Bodie takes his new hire, sniffer Rubble, out to the woods on a drill the Pitt mix takes off following a scent known only to the dog. What is found buried beneath trees and branches is the buried car of Evelyn Maddox with her in the driver’s seat.
At the reading of Evelyn’s will, Emmaline learns the house that has been her home as long as she recalls will go to her mother Marla and her obnoxious Aunt Karen, but the bakery where she worked with her grandmother and has kept going since the flood will come to Emmaline IF she is married when the will has completed the move through probate.
When Bodie learns of this caveat he offers himself to Emmaline as a potential husband. In her hour of need, Emmaline acquiesces and they meet at the courthouse with his twin Alia and her husband Ramsay Shaw as witnesses. From there the story demonstrates the evolution of their relationship as well as the relationship with the family members, including her brother who is up for parole.
This is such a good story told with humor and heart. The characters are well drawn and the setting well described. The plot is ever evolving to such a good conclusion. I very much enjoyed this book and do recommend it!
As a devoted fan of Kait Nolan, I dove into Hero Unexpected with high hopes, and she did not disappoint. From the moment Bodie appears with his new police dog, the story pulled me right in. Bodie is the perfect mix of strength and heart, the kind of hero who makes you feel safe just by being on the page. Emmaline won me over immediately. Her difficult childhood shaped her, yet she carries a quiet resilience that makes her easy to love. Learning that Bodie secretly supported her as a child when she sought refuge from her cruel mother and aunt added a touching layer to their bond. Their childhood connection made their later rediscovery of each other feel natural, tender, and deeply emotional. One of the things I love most about this series is how it celebrates flawed people learning to believe in love despite their scars. Bodie comes from a loud, loving family, while Emmaline grew up surrounded by bitterness. Watching them rebuild trust and shift from old friends to something much deeper was incredibly satisfying. And of course, no Kait Nolan novel is complete without the unforgettable charm of her small town southern community. The townspeople gossip about everything, but their loyalty runs fierce. Every scene with them feels like sitting on a big front porch with neighbors who know all your business and still love you anyway. I especially enjoyed how the families on both sides came together as the story unfolded. There is a sense of generational tension and longstanding resentment, yet Kait manages to weave moments of reconciliation and growth throughout the narrative. The only exceptions, of course, are Emmaline’s mother and aunt, who cling to their bitterness with stubborn intensity. By the time I reached the last page, I felt completely satisfied and still hungry for more. Hero Unexpected is heartfelt, romantic, hopeful, and filled with the kind of small town magic Kait Nolan is known for. I loved every moment from beginning to end and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series.
WOW!!I loved Hero Unexpected by Kait Nolan, book two in the Gibson Hollow series; a rollercoaster of emotions, heartwarming, marriage of convenience, childhood friends-to-lovers romance with some humorous scenes thrown in. A story that will grab your heart and emotions from page one to the last, and continues on through the additional epilogue.
Emmaline Maddox and sheriff Bodie Gibson were once best friends until Bodie, a rookie on the force, arrested her brother a decade ago; ending the friendship. The Gibson and Maddox families have always argued, feuding over the purchase of the depot that established the town; think Hatfields versus McCoys. Arresting Emmaline’s brother added fuel to that fire.
During the flood, Emmaline’s grandmother went missing and her bakery was damaged. Bodie and his new K-9, Rubble, discover her body, in her car, underneath mud from the flood. Emmaline worked hard, after the flood, to re-open her grandmother’s bakery but when the will is read, she learns she must be married to inherit. To say she is devastated is putting it mildly. She wasn’t dating anyone nor could she figure out a way around this. Her mom, Marla, and her aunt Karen, two nasty and spiteful women would inherit the bakery instead; not that either could bake. Then Bodie, a knight in shiny armor, a man who has cared about her forever, steps up, offering a marriage of convenience so that she can inherit.
Bodie waited patiently for Emmaline to trust him; never pushing her into believing they were more than friends. Emmaline was wary of good things happening in her life, due to her difficult childhood and the verbal abuse from her mother. With off the charts chemistry, these two were perfect for each other and Rubble was a sweetheart; aware of emotional needs of those around him. The Sasspatch Society was once again in the middle of everything; especially behind the celebration for the town re-opening. They are a force to be reckoned, wanting only the best for everybody. The scene with the chickens was hysterical. This book will touch your heart in so many ways. I can’t wait to return to Gibson Hollow for Colter’s story.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. #HeroUnexpected #kaitnolan #smalltown #GibsonHollow #mustread #needtoreaditnow #wildfiremarketingsolutions
Once upon time they were the best of friends then one day he did something completely unforgivable, in her eyes, and that was the last time he talked to Emmaline Maddox... and every day the dull ache in his heart reminds him of his mistake. He was always her protector back then, now he's more like a stranger to her, a stranger that wants to make things right... and now he just might to get that chance.
Hero, Unexpected is a wonderfully crafted enemies to lovers romance that will captivate and touch your heart. Brodie and Emmaline found friendship at a young age, but as they aged unfortunate events and family obligations got in the way and drove them apart. Now it's that same family that is going to help them find each other again.
Bodie never expected to have a second chance with Emmaline after the way things ended between them years ago, but now that she is going to be his fake wife he figures this is the perfect time to mend what he broke before. But Emmaline isn't about to let him back in that easily... it's going to take a lot of groveling and trust being built before she lets him back into her good graces. But he is fully up for the challenge!
I really loved what I found between the pages here, it was tender, sweet, romantic and funny at times too. This pairing was a match made in literary heaven. It wasn't an easy fall, they had to make amends, heal their hearts, and learn to forgive, but once it all started to come together it was all so perfect and good for my heart. This was my first experience with this author's work and I have to say her words definitely hit their mark! I cannot wait to come back to this series and read what I have missed. Highly recommend this one, it's words will put a nice little squeeze on your heart!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
I loved, loved, loved this heartwarming and spicy story about love, family, trauma and healing built around intense, strong, passionate, messy, relatable and likeable humans. It’s one of those books that you dive in heart first and stay completely absorbed in until the very last word. And oh the feels. I feeling all the feels right along with Bodie and Emmaline - laughing, crying, sighing, groaning, teeth gritting, and swooning. Bodie is the chief of police in small town Gibson Hollow. Emmaline is running the town bakery which has been in her family for decades. Despite the long standing “feud” between their families, Bodie and Emmaline were best friends growing up until Bodie arrested her brother a decade ago. But once Bodie hears of the marriage clause in Emmaline’s grandmother’s will as a requirement for her to inherit the bakery, 10 years of Emmaline’s anger doesn’t stop him offering a marriage of convenience. Of course, feelings are complicated messy things and they rarely stay in the boxes they are assigned to. Soon years of repressed feelings begins to make fake start to feel very real. To get to their HEA will take lots of baggage unpacking, truth telling and leaps of faith. All while dealing with her dysfunctional family and his smothering one and a small town full of quirky townspeople. I loved the way Bodie gently, lovingly, and beautifully helped Emmaline come out of her trauma caused safe box and begin to trust and embrace love. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit scarred, wounded, and bruised, like Emmaline. I just wanna reach into the story and hug them to help them heal. So I’m extra happy Bodie did it for me. I am loving this quirky town and its beautiful range of characters and cannot wait to read the next Gibson love story.
We’re off to a brilliant start ! Loving the cover ! Loving the authors note ! Thrilled to be in Gibson Hollow ! It’s my kind of place 🥰
Emmaline is running get gran’s bakery which she rebuilt after the flood and when they discover granny’s car the bakery is left to her with a stipulation and while we might not understand granny’s decision she knew what she doing I think 🤷♀️🥰 her mother who I shall not name because she deserves no “airtime “ because she’s awful has it in for her and she really breaks her at every opportunity if ever I didn’t like a fictional character now would be the time !
Bodie is the chief of police at Gibson Hollow and there’s bad blood between him and Emmaline’s family but the 2 of them share a history as a child he’d always be her safe space he knew how cruel her mother was As law enforcement he had to do his job and unfortunately Emmaline’s brother made a bad decision and ends up in jail and you guessed it the arresting officer was Bodie hence bad blood ….
Bodie get to hear of the stipulation of granny’s will and the steps up and helps Emmaline by marrying her but yes loved since their young days so it’s nit a problem for him and I think Emmaline felt the same way but was in denial thanks to the poison her mother had fed her for years and it breaks my heart to think a mother could be so cruel ….
What a gift it was to watch Bodie and Emmaline find one another , mend bridges and heal feuds . It was fun to hang out with Sasspatch Society and share their love of glitter 😉and Rubble is the sweetest four legged companion 🐾❣️
Despite the negative nellies in the story there was so much beauty , this a story of redemption, love , forgives, healing and second chances 🫶🏼
This is my first time reading Kait Nolan. I enjoyed this story enough that I plan to look up some of her other books. Hero, Unexpected is a story that will tug at your heartstrings while giving you hope that family feuds don’t have to continue forever. Add in a group of drag queens who will make up any excuse to celebrate, a family who loves unconditionally (the Gibsons), a heroine who’s up against the ropes and kicked out of her grandmother’s house where she was living, and a hero who’s heart has been lost to Emmaline since they were kids, and you’ll find yourself laughing, kicking your feet, crying and smiling.
I listened to an ALC of this story, narrated by Amy McFadden and Michael Gallagher. Both of these narrators are new to me, and I thought they both did a fantastic job of emoting the feeling of loss, pain, hope, lust, and happiness. I really felt like these characters were brought to life.
Emmaline is about to lose everything, the house she’d lived in with her grandmother, and her grandmother’s bakery which she paid to renovate after the hurricane. She learns that family doesn’t necessarily have to be blood related.
Bodie is the swoon-worthy chief of police in Gibson Hollow. His natural instinct is to protect. But when it comes to Emmaline, he’s willing to go several steps further. He’ll give anything to protect her heart. He used to wipe away her tears with the corner of his shirt when they were kids. And now, he offers her everything else to keep her safe.
For me, Rubble, the Rookie police dog really stole my heart. I thought she was the star of the story.
Thank you Kait Nolan, Take The Leap Publishing and NetGalley for this ALC. The above is my own and personal opinion.
Small town romances ftw! It's no secret that I'm a fan of Kait Nolan's work, and this second read in the Gibson Hollow series does not disappoint. I must admit I wasn't sure about the rest of the Gibson siblings, after the way they were blind to what was going on with Alia in the first read of the series. And while this read hasn't gotten me to forgive and forget with what they did it was easier to see how they just didn't see what was going on. Yes, I'm thinking Ramsey telling them all off is likely one of the favourite scenes written by Kait. But you're not here to have me wax poetic about Alia and Ramsey, this is about Bodie and Emmaline. And just Bodie is all kinds of just wonderful sighs.
There is a steadiness to both of them that just settled right into of course they work, of course it'll all work out just right. And really it does. There were some scenes with Em and Marley that just were hard to read - my own issues showing much - but overall it just was a wonderful read.
Sasspatch Squad delights, more of the town and who makes it coming to life and just this steady thrum of good. All of that and Bodie delivering some just perfect everything coupled with Em's own steadiness in the face of everything she has to deal with seems to be cementing this series as gold.
Great listen. Emmaline is put in an untenable situation by her beloved grandmother when her will is read. The very grandmother who took her in and raised her when she was all but abandoned by her insane horror of a narcissist mother, who loves nothing more than to emotionally torture her children. The bakery she is lovingly running and doing all she can to keep going, can only be hers if she gets married by the time probate concludes. Enter Brodie Gibson, who she’s known forever. As children, they were close friends and as a man, he arrested her brother on his first day as a police officer, thus ending their friendship. Tough to avoid him in a small town and she sees him every single day. Surprise of surprise, he offers to marry her to keep her baker. Of course, as friends only and not as a real married couple. They start out sharing a home and ultimately sharing their hearts and lives. It’s a sweet, sad, small town, second chance romance story that was truly a lovely read. It does touch on some disturbing family/ mental health issues (narcissism), love, loss, abandonment, second chances, small towns where everyone knows everything and the meaning of the word secret is barely a suggestion and a truly lovely sweet happy ending. I did not read the first in the series and it did not impede my enjoyment of this story. That aside, I am going to go get the first one and hope that there are more to come in this series.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.com in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Hero, Unexpected is a heartfelt, feel-good romance that beautifully explores second chances and the kind of love that shows up when you least expect it. This story shines in its emotional depth, weaving together themes of chosen family, personal growth, and the courage it takes to set boundaries with toxic relationships. At the center is a swoony, deeply devoted MMC who has loved the heroine since childhood—and proves time and again that he’ll do whatever it takes to protect and support her. His quiet loyalty and unwavering care make him impossible not to root for. On the other side, the FMC is navigating complicated emotions, torn between her lingering feelings and the pain she associates with him due to her brother’s past. Watching her wrestle with that conflict—and slowly open herself up to love and trust again—is both moving and satisfying. One of the most rewarding aspects of the story is how the FMC discovers support in the most unexpected places. The sense of found family adds warmth and richness, reminding readers that sometimes the people who stand by you aren’t the ones you were born into, but the ones who choose you. With its emotional payoff, romantic tension, and uplifting message about accountability and healing, Hero, Unexpected delivers a truly swoony experience. It’s a quick, fun, and easy read that doesn’t skimp on heart—perfect for anyone looking to get lost in a story about love, redemption, and finding your place where you least expect it.
This heartwarming book follows the story of Bodie and Emmaline, childhood friends who drifted apart due to family issues. When Emmaline's grandmother's will unexpectedly puts her bakery at risk, she turns to Bodie for help.
Despite their past differences, Bodie proposes a marriage of convenience to save the bakery. Emmaline, feeling insecure and alone, agrees. As their relationship evolves, they navigate challenges and discover the true meaning of family.
The characters in the story are fantastic, especially Rubble, a police dog in training, who you can't help but adore for being the sweetest thing. One of the highlights of the story is the Sassenpatch clan, who bring liveliness and support to those in need. Their phone conversations and family chats among the Bodies siblings are both hilarious and filled with juicy gossip.
The slow-burning romance between Em and Bodie is sweet and passionate, and it's heartwarming to see them become a couple and create a beautiful bond. We were rooting for them, especially Emmaline, who truly deserved a loving family that always had her back.
Don't miss this touching story! It will make you laugh, cry, and even feel angry on Em's behalf as she navigates her challenging family dynamics. This emotional journey will tug at your heartstrings and leave you cheering for their love to triumph. Make sure to read the extra epilogue to witness Bodie and Emmaline achieving their hearts' desires and finding their happily ever after.
We are back in Gibson Hollow and this time the story belongs to Police Chief Brodie Gibson and baker, Emmaline Maddock. These two have been friends since childhood. Even when their families were rivals, Brodie became Emmaline’s safe place and rock during her mother’s tyrant behavior . The same mother that abandoned her as a child. Emmaline grew up with her grandmother and when her grandmother dies and her will is read, she’s surprised that even though she left the bakery to Emmaline, she could only get possession of it if she’s married. Who comes to rescue her but the boy, now a man, who has loved her forever. Brodie proposes a marriage of convenience where she can find a peaceful place to stay. Especially after losing the only home she knew. As time goes on, true feelings are exposed. But the road to happiness will be put to doubt by a vindictive mother, as well as doubts Emmaline has about herself and Brodie’s part in her brother’s incarceration. This is a story about family or lack thereof. At times heartbreaking as well as heartwarming, it’ a story about a community bounding during tough times, reconciliation, forgiveness, hope, trust, second chances and new beginnings in life and love. Let’s not forget the Sasspatch Society, whom you’ll fall in love with not only with their witty dialogues, but their love and caring for their family and community. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Her grandmother left Emmaline the bakery with the stipulation that she needs to be married before the deal goes into probate. With no idea how she is going to accomplish finding a boyfriend and getting married, Emmaline gets an offer she can't refuse. Her former best friend turned enemy Bodie Gibson has offered to marry her to help his friend save the bakery that is rightfully hers. Can she forgive her former best friend for sending her younger brother to jail? Can they move forward and help her keep the bakery out of her dreaded mother and aunts hands? Can they convince the entire town they are in a relationship and about to get married in a short period of time, when both of their families hate each other? This book was a wonderful read. The relationship between Emmaline and Bodie was amazing to watch unfold. Coupled with twists and turns and a beautiful backdrop of a story, this may be better than the first book in this series. I highly recommend.
Gibson Hollow suffered a devastating flood, and the town is still trying to come back from that nine months later. Bodie Gibson is the town's chief of police and has been at the center of the rebuild. Emmaline Maddox finally has her grandmother’s bakery back together through her blood, sweat, and tears. When a clause in her grandmother’s will puts her ownership of the bakery in question, Bodie, ever the hero, offers a marriage of convenience to help Em reach her goals. This wouldn’t be so bad if the two families weren’t North Carolina’s version of the Hatfields and McCoys. What follows is a charming, heartwarming, fun, and emotional journey of two people who are meant to be together.
Kait Nolan created another beautiful world in Gibson Hollow, NC. These people will do anything for each other, even if it means a shovel and a batter’s swing. I loved watching Bodie melt for Emmaline and her, very slowly, learn that there are people in the world she can trust. I was hooked immediately as the emotional upheaval of Emmaline captured me, and the caring and tenderness Bodie shows Emmaline kept me riveted to the page. Of course, with the help of the over-the-top Sasspatch Society, the town continues to repair and celebrate its successes. I’m excited for the next story in this brilliant series.
This is a fabulous return to Gibson Hollow, where everyone is welcome, people support each other and glamour & sequins are an added bonus! After the terrible flooding that decimated the town, Gibson Hollow is slowly find its feet again, there is still much work to be done, but the theatre is complete and the local bakery will be opening again soon.
Emmaline Maddox is the local baker (since her Gran has been missing since the flooding), but she has been working tirelessly and the bakery will open soon, hopefully making her Gran happy and proud. Bodie Gibson (part of the Gibson Hollow namesake family) is the town sheriff, and used to be Emmaline's best friend... until he arrested her baby brother who ended up in prison.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster, and despite the "feud" between their two families, and the total lack of support from her mother and aunt, they find the town is full of support, looking out for people in their time of need. In Emmaline's case what she needs in a husband, but what she really needs is someone to unconditionally have her back.
This book is full of joy and laughter, despite hard times, it has deep layers and tugs at the heart strings, and leaves you both satisfied and desperate for more!
I highly recommend this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
What would you do if the only way to keep what you love, is to trust someone you couldn't forgive?
This is a plot driven, quick read told in duel-POV. Emmaline is a baker at her grandmother's bakery, and she hasn't let go of the past. Bodie is a small town police chief who was her childhood best friend, until he arrested her brother years ago. Now Emmaline's grandmother has passed, and her will states that she can only have the bakery as long as she marries. Bodie presents a fake marriage to help solve Emmaline's predicament, but can she choose to forgive or trust him?
✅️ Fake couple trope ✅️ Second chance trope
This is my first book by Kait Nolan. I listened to the audiobook format, and truly enjoyed the female narrator, but the male narrator didn't feel right to me & was a distraction throughout so I'm knocking off 1 🌟 for that reason. It took me a couple chapters to really get pulled in, but if I read the book format it may have grabbed me sooner. I did enjoy the story itself as it shows the reality of forgiveness and love. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
If you enjoy cozy small-town romances with fake dating and second chances, you’ll love this one.
Thank you to the Kait Nolan and Take the Leap Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Bodie Gibson was a port in the storm for Emmeline Maddox when they were growing up. Then as a rookie cop he arrested her brother. Now with her grandmother dead and her mother returned to town, Em is about the lose the bakery she has worked hard to reopen after a flood/storm. Bodie comes to the rescue once again proposing a fake marriage. Only as the days go by the marriage is no longer looking so fake. They are both catching feelings. There is some spice to this romance. Em has a lot of trust issues to overcome. Her mother was always at minimum verbally abusive. She is still speaking lies that get caught up in Emmeline’s head. Another reviewer didn’t like Emmeline, saying she was weak and indecisive. It’s sad to say that only someone who has endured a constant barrage of negative comments as a child and teen would understand the character the author is portraying in Em. That Em comes to recognize the lies and stands up for herself and reaches for a relationship with Bodie by apologizing for mis-reading things that happened during the book, says to me that she is a strong person who will win as she builds resilience. I enjoyed listening to the book. The narrators do a good job. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read the book.
This was INCREDIBLE!!! As an ARC reader, this is my honest opinion. If you see my reviews on Amazon, Bookbub, or Goodreads, you will notice I don't give out 5 stars often. Kait Nolan has been an author who consistently puts out amazing stories. Never boring, always a page turner, and characters you either love or not. Like Emmaline's mom for example. She's the perfect, "Cruella". You won't like her either. Then there's Bodie and Emmaline. I believe these two are her best characters in this series so far! Bodie is so patient and has looked out for Emmaline since she was 12. So, it isn't a shocker that he steps up to help Em when she desperately needs it. Em is fragile in the sense of her emotions from verbal abuse since she was a child. Yet she is so strong when it comes to her brother, the bakery, and allowing herself to love and be loved. A really moving story that I couldn't put down. There's no cheating or cliffhanger, and you get the beginning of a happy ever after. Note... I love the fact that these two start with friendship, then marriage, and build their relationship before they build mutual passion. A wee bit old fashioned, but I loved it!! Enjoy. I sure did!!!
One of my favorite parts of the book was the Sasspatch Society members. Next was the text message string from Brodie's family. I enjoyed all of the characters, the quirky happenings in town, and even the villains were easy to dislike.
I was cheering for Brodie and Emmaline before we ever got to the marriage of convenience part. It was such a struggle watching Em lacking confidence because of her mother, aunt, and really even her grandmother.
So my question became did Em's grandmother do what she did in hopes that Em would have more than just the bakery in her life, or did her grandmother really feel like she couldn't handle on her own? I don't know if I overlooked the actually answer. I don't think anything definitive was ever stated about the grandmother's true meaning of why she wrote the will that way.
I also liked that the families recognized who was still behind the feud and they were able to come together. To top it off, we were treated to both an epilogue and a bonus. I am looking forward to the next Gibson Hollow story.

Bodie and Emmaline have a complicated past. They use to be the best of friends and years later Em felt like Bodie betrayed her by arresting her brother. The feud between their families has been carrying on for decades and it seems like these two will follow suit, until Em needs his help. Bodie is incredible, he wants to be there for Em and has always carried at torch for her even when she hated him, he still cared for her. Em’s family is a mess and has caused her constant grief and now that they are back causing more waves, she starts to realize Bodie and his family were never to blame. The more time these two spend together the more the sparks fly and they can’t fight their attraction any more, what started as fake became real. I wished we got more of their friendship as kids to see why it was so strong and I did expect more drama from Em’s mother, but overall, this story was emotional beautiful and funny. When it comes to the fake marriage trope it always becomes more. Like Bodie said, “Because the problem with pretending is how fast it stops feeling like it, and I was afraid I was already slipping over that edge.”
Emmaline is in an impossible situation. Due to an outdated clause in her grandmother's will, she's about to lose the business she's worked incredibly hard to build unless she gets married within the next 6 months. Local police chief Bodie used to be her best friend until he arrested her brother committing a crime about 10 years ago. That's the setup for a marriage of convenience. It's not supposed to be physical or to involve feelings, but this couple really cares for each other. Their situation is complicated because Emmaline's family resents Bodie's family and blames them for their misfortunes.
Emmaline has been a victim of parental abuse and Bodie helps her learn to trust her heart, not her mother's cutting words. He encourages her to take charge and make her own decisions but is there to stand beside her and defend her if needed.
While this is Book 2 in the Gibson Hollow series, it definitely works as a standalone. You will see the characters from Book 1 and learn more about the small town's recovery from the big flood.
