The basic story-pattern of Hippolytus is archetypal, and has archetypal power and depth. In Euripides’ hands it is enhanced by brilliant human psychology and universalized by the presence of divinities. The result is a masterpiece of world literature, and a recurrent source of inspiration for later writers. This new translation and commentary is intended for Greekless readers who wish to fain as full an understanding of the play as is possible without access to the language of the original. To this end its authors have tried to reproduce much of the verbal texture of the original and to achieve a roughly similar word pattern, keeping to the lines of the Greek verse.
