I love crime stories, esoteric topics, black history, exploring different cultures, science and romance. All of those things I try to incorporate into my stories. Currently finishing up my first series titled: Rooted In The Backwoods.

This for my hoodoo girls my southern gothic fans, it’s not really horror but it’s paranormal in a way. The story was so good that the romance portion was just a bonus for me. Chade our FMC is annoying but in a guarded judgmental kinda way. There is def some growth by the end but still. While I know it’s due to trauma I don’t like when anyone is rude or condescending under the guise of protecting themselves like you’re being a B*tch right now and if someone talked to you in the same way it would be an issue. I loved the blood line and familial trauma aspect because it’s interwoven so well throughout the story. I wish the pace had been sped up just a teensy bit because I feel like where we needed just wasn’t enough. Especially cus the sneak peek leads you somewhere different.
I am super intrigued and look forward to this authors work lol oh and Emory putting Chade THROUGH THE MATTRESS next book lol cus it’s overdue. Spice here was minimal and we got a more detailed scene from the supporting cast. I do have questions about what’s to come and I’m hoping they are answered in the next book. This is one I’m actually gonna buy a hard copy of because it’s that good. The author dropped a lot of gems and jewels that I think is worth me revisiting multiple times.

To be a new author this was very well written!
Be easy on me I'm new to this whole review thing.
I'll say this. The Hoodoo parts had me deep in, turning pages. The dreams, the ceremonies, especially once Chade travelled to the Ancestor realm and was able to see her passed over Ancestors. I enjoyed the complexity of Chade as a woman, sensitive but head-strong and how she was paired with a man that could match her intensity. Sometimes those be the best types of women. Make you work for it, ya know? She got whatever traits she got from her mother that's for sure, the way she came out that bedroom, gun in hand ready to protect her husband and their home.
As a man, Emory was almost spot on with how we as men internalize finding ourselves. Especially when you're the quiet observant type. Or you might be a little more emotionally intelligent than most. The author gave him a quiet level of confidence and strength. He gave just enough to Chade and knew when to pull back when she acted up to let her know he wasn't a pushover. Sometimes women see this as weakness and once again him being paired with Chade made so much sense.
I guess one thing is I would've like to hear more about Chade's and her mother's relationship. Considering family and childhood trauma was a big theme throughout the book, both for her and Emory. Some things were done off the page, but still gave enough to understand what was going on. It was good though, to see great men and father figures throughout the story. I appreciate that the Hoodoo parts wasn't a whole bunch of seances. The author kept it simple but thorough. Bible verses, dreams, herbs, a little tarot and astrology and mention of the ring shout and things of that nature.
First time reader. Trying to get into more fiction. Was suggested this book by my sister and I was pleasantly surprised. The author wove in magical realism and made me actually feel as if I was there with the characters. Not sure how much I am supposed to tell without giving it away. lol
I normally grab thriller, crime or suspense, so to read a little thriller, slight horror and some paranormal was dope, not that into romance books, but the romance was a great addition and wasn't the center of the story, although there are several spicy and date-like scenes. It was the relationships of their family, friends and their internal conflict, dealing with the loss of a parent, childhood trauma, self-awareness, acceptance, and Hoodoo that took center stage.

surprisingly good
All the Hoodoo references really captivated me. It was a little slow in the beginning but it started to pick up then got really interesting.
