Bound by an Oath. Forged in shadows. Destined to shatter kingdoms.
Twenty-one-year-old Luze has been in exile for most of her life, for a crime that irreparably damaged her kingdom’s future. When her uncle arrives, offering a perilous proposition, she desperately takes she will travel to the enemy lands of Altheara and kill their prince.
Bound to a magical Oath that will kill her if she does not fulfill it, Luze must become ruthless. With her magic damaged from her years in exile, she can trust no one—not even herself. As she adapts to her new role as spy and assassin, a forbidden romance springs between Luze and Thyo, the prince’s calculating right hand, even as both mask hidden motives. As Luze begins to question everything she’s been taught, her every move is watched by Aslen, the Huntress, an Althearan with fierce loyalty to the prince and a dangerous secret of her own.
Worse, something is not right in Altheara—a dark, shadowed magic lurks, and a sinister plot threatens the entire realm. As secrets surface and blood is spilled, Luze realizes she will have to kill or be killed—unless she can find a way to reclaim her lost magic, break her Oath, and save both kingdoms from doom.
For readers who devour enemies-to-lovers, spy heroines with knives behind their backs, and high-stakes fantasy full of betrayal, secrets, and slow-burn tension, A Craft of Starlight is your next obsession.
I received an ARC of this book, which does not affect my review. Thank you to the author and Booksirens for the chance to read this book.
A Craft of Starlight is romantasy woven with political intrigue, tension, and deadly oaths. There’s much going on for the main character, Luze, and yet it was all strung together with care. I loved it. To be honest, I approach romantasy books nowadays a little skeptical even if I do enjoy them. I think this is because many feel the same way: the same enemies to lovers, the same kinds of plots, the same endings. Not Craft of Starlight. The ending most of all is phenomenal, and I loved how it had the guts to do what I wish more romantasies would.
To start, a large part of my enjoyment came from the characters. I am always a character reader first, and so even if a romantasy has all the popular selling points, which I love but sometimes feel tired of, it becomes completely enjoyable if I love the characters. And I loved these characters. Luze and Thyo most of all of course! If I could sum up their relationship in one word it would be banter. Banter is another big thing in romantasy, sometimes cringey, other times not, and this banter was perfect. I actually laughed several times at the lines. The “learn how to have a conversation” line was my favorite. It was so Luze to say that, and I laughed for probably five minutes at that! Both Luze and Thyo match each other’s wits, and as they draw closer together, you can’t help but fall more in love with them both and their relationship. Of course this makes the truth Luze is carrying all the more sad!
The others characters are just as interesting. In addition, the political intrigue, spying, and fighting in this book is another large part of it and it is all done well. Especially as Luze begins to deconstruct what she’s been taught to believe, and as her bond with Thyo strengthens, you see deep character development on her behalf. Her conflict between the past, what she has been bound to do, and her growing relationship with Thyo makes for so much turmoil but also growth for her. There were a couple of slower sections where the plot seemed to stall in the middle of the book, but this being the author’s first book is impressive anyway. And then, by the time truth unraveled for both parties, there was no putting the book down.
Then came the end. Obviously I won’t spoil anything, but what impressed me was how it did not shy away from being brutal, even realistic. I really appreciate that in books, fantasy and romance alike. When a book can show real hardship and not fall into the usual trap of everyone being safe all the time, to the point where you feel no stakes for the characters, I lose interest. So to me, this ending was by far the best part of the series. Luze also comes into her own, maybe not in the classic heroine’s way, and this makes her character better too. I know much of this is preference, but boy oh boy do I like books that go darker, and even that might end a little darker. I don’t know if this will be a series, though I don’t know if it needs to be. However, if it is, I know I will be jumping to read the next one, especially knowing where Luze has ended up.
This book was amazing! I felt like I could really see the the world that Layla was building. She was so thoughtful and thorough in her descriptions of all the places we visited in this book.
I though the way magic worked was creative. It does have similarities to other books, but not the same cut and dry magic that other books have.
You really feel for Luze, having lived alone for so long and then getting thrown into a whole situation and being surrounded by essentially enemies. Main characters and side characters are all great. I enjoyed the personalities and banter, twists and turns that we are brought through.
The ending really got me. I had to sit on it for a few days before moving on!

Another banger of a debut novel! The magic system in the world was so interesting, especially because it was almost like many fae style fantasy novels but without fae, which was a nice change. I was rooting for the slow burn romance and then was absolutely SHOOK by the cliffhanger and I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2!
Thanks to BookSirens and Layla Ray Hanson for this ARC! I will be following this series closely!
A fantasy romance that truly surprised me. It’s been a while since a book managed to grip me like this. The story starts with a rather classic setup, but it still kept me hooked… and that ending? I absolutely did not see it coming! The story follows Luze, a Crafter (something close to a Fae), who is forced into a political marriage with Thyo, the mortal prince of a rival kingdom – the classic shadow daddy. I loved Luze’s slow and steady growth, her awakening, and the way she navigates political intrigues while moving like a spy in enemy territory. The more strategic side of the plot was a great touch as well. The side characters are there (some more interesting than others), but I’m pretty sure they’ll be explored in more depth in the next installments. As for me, I devoured the book in just three days, and the ending left me completely speechless. I honestly have no idea what to expect next. The writing is smooth and easy to follow – and that’s coming from someone whose first language isn’t English. Some passages are a bit slower, but never boring. The worldbuilding, however, still feels a bit unclear to me. Since this seems to be more of an introductory book, I hope things will become clearer in the sequel. (Though, a world map would definitely help!) Romance is present, but I wouldn’t say it’s the core of the story. What truly surprised me was the atmosphere: dark, intriguing, and promising even more intensity in the next chapters. At times, it gave me the same vibes I felt while watching Game of Thrones (just the vibes, of course!). All in all, I’m extremely curious to see how the story will unfold… but I’m already bracing myself with tissues, because I can sense this journey is going to be intense. Tropes: ⚜️ enemies to lovers ⚜️ slow burn ⚜️ political intrigue ⚜️ spy 🫑 spice
First off, this cover is stunning, and it made me want to dive right in! A Craft of Starlight follows Luze, a twenty-one-year-old living in exile for a crime that shattered her kingdom’s future. When her uncle offers her a dangerous deal, travel to enemy territory and kill their prince, she has no choice but to accept. Bound by a deadly magical Oath, Luze must play the spy and assassin, even as her damaged magic and growing feelings for Thyo, the prince’s right hand, threaten to unravel her mission. As dark magic stirs and a sinister plot endangers both kingdoms, Luze must decide who to trust, whether she’s truly guilty, and if she can reclaim her magic before it’s kill or be killed. This book is everything, enemies-to-lovers, knives-out intrigue, forbidden romance, and rich worldbuilding. I devoured it in two sittings and loved every twist and turn. If you love strong heroines, political betrayal, and slow-burn tension, this needs to be on your TBR!
A Craft of Starlight completely hooked me—I was obsessively turning pages from start to finish. The voice is immersive and intimate; you feel every beat of the heroine’s fear, grit, and longing, and it genuinely puts you inside her head. The worldbuilding and tension unfold clearly, the slow-burn dynamics sizzle without taking over the plot, and there are clever twists and small character moments that make everything hit harder.
The pacing is spot-on, the writing is easy to follow, and the ending sets up the next installment in the best (cruel) way. I’m counting down the days for book two (and three), and I’m grabbing a physical copy for my shelf. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

YES YES YES I absolutely loved every single second spent reading this book. It was so incredibly good, the angst, the tension the freaking tension 10/10!!!! I found myself cutting down hours off my sleep schedule just so i could read a few more pages. I 100% recommend reading this as soon as you can because you are most certainly missing out.

I was hooked from the cover and description, and was so glad I was able to read this opening chapter and getting into this world. The characters were so well written and thought the overall feel worked in the enemy to lovers concept. It was everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the spy element how it worked. Layla Raz Hanson was able to weave a strong writing style and enjoyed the concept and how the characters were written in this universe. It left me wanting to read more in this world and characters as this does a fantastic job in creating something unique. I enjoyed how good Layla Raz Hanson wrote this and am excited for more and glad it worked so well in the fantasy world.

100 stars. I love this book. It’s full of fantasy, and magic, and even had me hoping for the romance between Luze and the prince. There’s so many cool characters, and so much backstory to keep me thinking about this for days. I need the next book. Like right now.
Honestly, I was really shocked at how captivating A Craft of Starlight was from start to finish. Layla did a fantastic job creating characters and made it easy to imagine them as a cohesive unit. Luze the MFC was easy to like, understand and to want to succeed in her journey. I found the magic system was different and once you gain information from characters throughout the book it becomes easier to understand. It was definitely a breath of fresh air within the books that I typically like to read.
Sometimes fantasy books will be easy to figure out and you can guess who/what will happen in the plot line or to characters. That definitely isn't the case with this book. The cliffhanger at the end had me absolutely in a chokehold and NEEDING the next book ASAP!
Thank you to BookSirens for letting me read this advance review copy for free, and I've left this review voluntarily.
I love this book!! It is well written and moves at a fast pace. There is no long drawn out explanations, and all story questions are answered as you read.
This story has it all; magic, mortals, creatures, desires, and deceptions. As you read, you will cheer some characters and some you will hate. So many situations. so much happens all woven together; war, trust, and power.
Block out time for yourself because once you start reading, you will not want to put the book down until the end.

I received this book as an ARC. A Craft of Starlight looks very promising for readers who enjoy dark fantasy with romance, spy plots, moral complexity, and shadowy magic. If Layla Raz Hanson delivered on character development, while maintaining tension without overloading the plot, and gave the familiar tropes a fresh spin, this could be a standout. I loved this book and had me just pulled in.
A Craft of Starlight completely stole my heart. From the first chapter, I was hooked — not just by the intriguing world and the high-stakes plot, but by how emotionally raw and beautifully written it all is. Layla Raz Hanson has created something truly special with this book, and I loved every single moment of it.
Luze is such a powerful, complex protagonist. I was immediately drawn to her — her guilt, her strength, her vulnerability, and her determination all made her feel incredibly real. Watching her navigate exile, magic she doesn’t fully understand, and an impossible mission had me holding my breath more than once. Her inner struggles hit hard, and I loved that she wasn’t perfect — she felt human, relatable, and fierce.
The tension in this story is next-level. The magical oath that forces Luze into an assassination plot? Genius. The stakes never let up. Every character she meets could be an enemy, a threat, or something more. I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I needed to know how it would all play out.
And the romance... wow. I’m a sucker for slow-burn, emotionally charged relationships, and the dynamic between Luze and Thyo had me grinning, sighing, and completely invested. It’s complicated in the best way — full of distrust, longing, secrets, and that irresistible pull between two people who shouldn’t want each other, but do. I loved every scene between them.
The writing itself is absolutely gorgeous. The world felt so immersive, the magic was dark and mysterious, and the emotional undercurrents running through the story made it impossible to put down. I genuinely didn’t want this book to end.
The overall vibe of this book was okay. The writing in the beginning felt a little rough and jumpy. Things were kind of skimmed over and I found it hard to anchor myself into the characters and plot line. This got better as the book went on, and we were introduced to more characters/relationships. The romance aspect between Luze and Thyo was lacking in depth a little bit. I felt their tension and trueness more when they were travelling rather than later on in the book. I had to reread a bit to even make sure things actually happened between them because it was just totally skipped over. The magical aspect of the story lacked clarity and the ring at the end I thought would finally give us some answers but it didn’t. So that was disappointing. Aslen was a great character and I think focusing on her was a great idea. I wish the other characters were written as in depth as she was. All in all it wasn’t my jam, but I also know that the first book in a series can leave a lot of questions unanswered intentionally and that it could all be tied together later on in the series. ⭐️⭐️ .5🌶️ I received this book as an arc copy and am voluntarily leaving an honest review
I enjoyed this book and read it quite quickly. It was fast paced and never a dull moment. Some parts of the story seemed a little too fast paced, such as the romantic connection between the FMC and MMC. It initially presented as like an enemies to lovers trope but it didn’t feel like they stayed enemies for that long before going to love. And he fell in love quite fast, it didn’t seem to fit. World-building was okay, though I still have more questions than answers. I was hoping the story would delve into the mysterious man that sometimes showed up to the FMC. All of the FMC’s problems seemed to conveniently be solved most of the time, though the ways in which they were conveniently solved was creative. Still, though she faced hardship those things were overcome without much difficulty. There were some grammar errors and misspellings here and there as well, causing me to have to reread or guess at certain points.
Overall a good read, I read it quickly and would consider reading the next book.

What an absolutely fantastic book I could not put it down I read it in one day! The world building was just phenomenal and I absolutely loved the plot!
I loved this book until I got to the end of the book I could just see so much more between the MFC and MMC, I was really looking forward to watching their relationship grow throughout the next book!
I really liked how descriptive the author was either the world the book was based in the creatures and the characters as well. I found each character brought something different to the story and that not two characters were the same.
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and the does not effect my review.
Thank you to both the author and Booksirens for the opportunity to read this book I can’t wait for the second book!
I found it hard to read. I get the want for unveiling things slowly and create anticipation, but there isn’t any depth to the story. There is just a then be then c. I don’t feel a connection to any of the characters, theres not really any descriptions or feelings. I really struggled to read this book. I’m not saying this is a bad way to write, it just doesn’t resonate with me. I like an emotional connection and to feel full immersed in what I am reading.

I need to be honest with you as my co-readers and in this book I found it hard to get my head wrapped into the story. I think it's not a bad story overall but it need to get rewritten a bit because the story jumps all around.
But don't give up and it will be better in the next books! For me it's a 3-star read.

Wow, what an amazing read! Such a brilliant ending!! I read it in two sittings because I could not put it down. The book is rich in its themes, plot and world building and the writing is excellent.
This is both a romantic fantasy and a coming of age story. Who can she trust? Does anyone have her best interests at heart? Is she truly guilty of the crime she was accused of? Can she save her kingdom from destruction as she learns to develop and control her own magic? Is love of a man or a kingdom her path? I loved reading such a strong female lead with both a timeless story and modern quandaries.
