No kissing. No sleepovers. And absolutely, positively no catching feelings.
The rules exist for a reason. I don’t do relationships, I don’t do attachments, and I definitely don’t do straight men looking to take a walk on the wild side.
Cue Ryan Buterbaugh walking into my life. A hot, relentless, slutty short-wearing golden retriever of a man that's entirely too good at getting under my skin.
He’s everything I avoid. And worst of all? He doesn’t scare off. No matter how many lines I draw, he keeps stepping closer—completely unaware or simply not afraid of what will happen if I let him in.
But I know better. I should have known better. Because the second I start breaking my rules for him, I don’t know if I can survive it.
What I do know for certain…if anyone hurts him, I will end them.
––––– RYAN “BUTTERS” BUTERBAUGH
From the outside, my life is one most men would dream of.
America’s number one quarterback with two championship rings. Senator’s son. A respected family dripping in old money.
I’m the guy who always says the right thing, does the right thing, is the right thing.
But behind the scenes? I’m hiding my true identity.
I’ve managed to keep it separate. Anonymous. No strings. No complications. Because no one can know.
It works.
Until Spencer Stark.
He doesn’t care who I am. Doesn’t want anything from me. Keeps me at arm’s length with rules that should align with my own—except I don’t want to follow them.
I told myself I could handle it. That I could be near him without revealing too much. But the more he pushes me away, the more I want in.
And for the first time…I couldn’t care less if my whole life implodes.
After loving Butters, Ryan, as a side character in the first book, I was excited for him to get his own book! He’s so chaotic.
This book immediately has the heavy backstories again. I really appreciated how much more the author explored the characters trauma in this book compared to the last one. It had a much stronger plot with much more tension between these characters.
I love that Ryan is a jock who bakes. The fact he can casually make macarons, as someone who has failed at making them multiple times. I'm starting to think the author must really love cooking and baking.
Spencer and Ryan having the goal of giving back to queer youth so those kids don't have to suffer what they did was so special.
The found family aspect in this series is perfect. My favorite side character has to be Fucker, and he definitely earned that name.
There are still a few places that feel unnecessarily wordy, and some conflicts could have used more buildup, but this was a solid read. I actually enjoyed this one more than the first book, and I can clearly see the author's growth. This book has me locked in to the series to see where everyone’s stories go!
Omg the way that I loved this book!!! This one gave me everything that I needed. Butter, the man that you are, I absolutely adore you! Spence, the daddy that you are, watching your growth was beautiful!!! Seeing Ant and Chance again made my heart so happy, they were my first love! Also, I always love when the supporting women in stories are funny AF and strong AF! Can’t forget about F-Bomb, I don’t even like cats, but he was cool as hell too 😂😂😂
This book was absolutely everything I waited on. Butters is the epitome of the perfect golden retriever. Spence....my guarded, broken Spence, I loved you with all my heart as well. This book perfectly wove the plot in with the spice in the best possible way for my taste. This story was everything I love and crave in my books. Loved seeing Anthony and Chance brought into this more than just a "cameo" sighting. I'm just so happy right now 😌
I loved King of Pain and J.P. has eclipsed himself with this latest installment of this amazing series. This book was so good. I was sucked in immediately to this world we were introduced to in KoP. This family he's created here are everything. I absolutely am obsessed with Spence and Butters - from the very beginning, I loved them. Butters is an absolute golden retriever with 5 dimples (IYKYK). and Spence - gorgeous, walled-up Spence - I just wanted to hug him and never let go. I loved how persistently adorable Ryan was and he never gave up on Spencer. He took those walls down, one tiny brick at a time, until Spencer had no idea they no longer existed. Witnessing him finally realizing all he felt for Ryan was beautiful. I loved all the side stories - Chance & Ant, the babies, Tyler, Jason & Deacon (can't wait for their book), the Betties, F-bomb, Jen, the sisters, Lexi & Beau, Dita & Parker... it goes on and on, because J.P.'s world is perfection and I want to live there. It's warm and cozy and oh so comforting. Like a warm, comfy blanket. Then there's the way he interwove the art of cooking throughout the story. And then the freaking soundtrack. People... The title of each chapter is a song and the soundtrack is on Spotify. And this one is 90s perfection. It instantly brought back high school and college memories for me and with each one, I was like "this is my jam!" LOL and then Jodeci started, and I died. :D J.P. Joseph, this book and playlist spoke to my soul and I won't be the same. I loved this book! Now, excuse me while I go listen to this playlist on repeat ad nauseam.
♾️⭐️ This second book in the Damaged Heart series could not of been more STUNNING! Ryan ‘Butters’ Buterbaugh is the epitome of Golden Retriever.. I knew having met him in the first book in this series - King Of Pain, that I was going to absolutely froth over him and his whole vibe- and I was not wrong. This man is pure sunshine.. he burrows his way in Spencer’s world slowly but surely. At first it’s with gym sessions and a ruse to get some legal advice, when in fact he just wants to be in Spencer’s orbit. Meanwhile Spencer is a man of control. He has a set of rules he abides by because of certain things he’s been through in his life and is a stickler for routine. Until Ryan comes along and works his was into his every day life unashamedly!! The banter between these two was top tier exceptional, with Ryan’s one liners making me laugh out loud on more than one occasion!! Let’s just say I won’t look at a can of whipped cream the same ever again!!! And Spencer??? Well that sweet broken boy just needed someone to show up for him and stay. To prove he was worth sticking around for. Boy did they both have me in a chokehold from the very first page… I gobbled this up in less that 24 hours- the humour, the spice and the strong found family is so delightful you don’t want to put this down! If you’ve read the first book the side characters bring all the charm and that stays strong in this book too! I laughed, cried and swooned so hard whilst reading this, which makes me even more excited to what’s coming next!
I absolutely devoured this book. When it comes to JP’s writing style, he just sucks you into his world. With him being a debut author, I just knew this one was going to make me feel all the good things.
Ryan, also know as Butters, and Spencer were simply perfect. Ryan with his sunshine golden retriever self and Spencer with being the reserved grump.
Spencer’s story just makes you feel for him through this entire book because he is the way he is because of his past.
Spencer is so possessive over Ryan and I loved that one moment when he was like “you’re mine”.
What I loved is how these two were destined to be together when you find out that bit of teaser.
JP always knows how to make those first times so special. That first kiss…
And the Betty’s. I love them so much.
The found family was so beautiful but I loved the sisters so much. Parker is such a fun character and I hope down the line, he gets a story.
If you’re looking for a book with the right kind of slow burn with some spicy times, this book is going to be for you. Also, this book has so many funny moments. I mean, with Butters as one of the MC, you’re going to have one heck of a time.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
ARC READ: Holy hell JP Joseph can write a story. This book was as immaculate as King of Pain but in a very different way. Butters had me laughing so hard, with me imagining Spence’s uptight face 🤣🤣🤣 There were some surprises I did not see coming. And those one liners. Far out. And coming up with the name OP (I won’t ruin it for you) was soooo funny!!! Well done on that one JP! Youve become an auto read for me 🥰
I received an ARC copy of this book. ⭐️ 4.5 Stars After absolutely loving King of Pain, I went into this book with really high expectations, and I'm happy to say it delivered... for the most part.
I'll admit, the first 30% had me a little worried. I loved Ryan and Spencer as individual characters, but I wasn't sold on their chemistry yet. Their connection felt a little flat, and I found myself waiting for something to really click between them. Thankfully, it absolutely did.
Ryan Buterbaugh completely stole my heart. I am an absolute sucker for a himbo, golden retriever MMC, and Ryan was everything I wanted and more. He was sweet, endlessly caring, unintentionally hilarious, and just an all-around cinnamon roll. His interactions with the ladies at the retirement home were some of my favorite moments in the entire book, and they even had me tearing up by the end. His dialogue had me laughing constantly.
My biggest frustration early on was that Ryan let Spencer believe he was straight for far too long. The physical chemistry between them was undeniable, but because neither of them was willing to be vulnerable, I struggled to feel the emotional connection at first.
Once Ryan caught feelings, though, everything started to shift. He gave so much of himself, and for a while it felt painfully one-sided. Spencer had built walls around himself that seemed impossible to break through. His trauma and fear of being hurt kept everyone at arm's length, even his friends. But underneath all of that was someone incredibly caring. The way he looked after and mentored Tyler showed exactly who he was beneath all those defenses.
Then Ryan came crashing into his life like a wrecking ball, and little by little those walls finally started to crumble.
The last 25% of this book completely made it for me. After Ryan was injured, watching Spencer care for him and finally let himself soften was so rewarding. Their emotional connection blossomed, Spencer began letting go of his self-imposed rules, and their relationship became everything I'd been waiting for. Their first kiss? Absolutely perfect. And Spencer's phone call to Ryan's dad had me completely swooning. There were so many beautiful, heartfelt moments in that final stretch of the book.
One of my favorite parts of the story was the incredible found family. Jen, Anthony, Chance, Tyler, Dita, Parker, Lexi, Beau, The Bettys, Ryan's sisters, and even F-Bomb the cat all added so much heart and humor. I loved watching everyone rally around Ryan and Spencer and become the family Spencer never realized he needed.
While King of Pain is still my favorite, this was a fantastic follow-up from JP Joseph. I loved the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, the friends-with-benefits-to-lovers romance, the slow burn, the banter, the found family, the hurt/comfort, and yes... the spice was excellent too. If those are your favorite tropes, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I fell in love with Chance and Anthony in King of Pain. I just finished reading Bone Deep, by JP Joseph, the second book in the Damaged Heart series and was completely enthralled by Spencer and Ryan. (This can be read as a standalone although I suggest you read King of Pain first.)
This beautiful book made me feel so many emotions, and that's honestly why I love reading so much. The beginning of this book is set up in a way where we get glimpses into our two character's lives, important moments that shaped them as people, and then a scene that made me giggle and I already knew I was going to love this book. Spencer has three rules- no sleepovers, no kissing, and absolutely no catching feelings. He is my favorite type of MMC- closed off and has quite a mouth. He doesn't let people in easily, and that's why when he meets Ryan all bets are off. Ryan is a football player, the senator's son, and can't truly be himself. He keeps arrangements anonymous, because he doesn't want his whole life to go up in flames. That is until he meets Spencer, and through his golden retriever charm and relentless tries he breaks through Spencer's walls.
As I was reading this I wondered why Spencer is so closed off? The way we learn about his past was paced well throughout the story where I just couldn't put this book down. When Spencer finally opens up to Ryan it's so profound and makes you fall harder for these characters. This book had so many sweet moments I was smiling so much while reading this. I really enjoyed reading Bone Deep, and the character growth Spencer goes through throughout the story. I also loved Ryan when he could truly be himself. This book is paced so well, and JP Joseph writes vulnerability in a way that really just evokes genuine emotion from me.
Without giving any spoilers here some thoughts/ favorite scenes from Bone Deep
-A certain phone call between Spencer and a Senator -Spencer's cats name, and the trouble this little menace causes -The group of old ladies known as the Betty's who are basically mean girls meets golden girls -A certain "prank call" -Chapter 50 made me cry -The Epilogue
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read Bone Deep, I appreciate every ARC I receive and really enjoyed reading this beautiful story.
Bone Deep is a grumpy‑and‑sunshine story about breaking through someone’s barriers and being yourself. It was easy to follow and long enough that it didn’t drag, and it leaned more toward plot‑driven with some character development. Jen was my favourite because of her no‑shit attitude and the way she defends her friends, and I also related a bit to Dita with how she works, teases her boss, and is that friendly person you need in your life without realising it. My least favourite characters were Ryan’s dad and Jablonski, who kept making homophobic jokes. The characters will last because Ryan is not letting Spencer go, even though Spencer might let Ryan go if he thought it was what Ryan truly wanted, since his trauma makes him expect the worst. I liked the way Ryan’s sunshine personality slowly wore me down, even though it annoyed me at first — but I’m British, so that tracks. I loved the friendship‑becoming‑family dynamic and how supportive the friend group was. What I didn’t like was that they had been hooking up for a year, and Ryan still didn’t tell his best friend he was gay, and that they kept their relationship in a “fuck buddies” place for almost a year and a half. The scene that stuck with me the most was when Ryan got hurt on the field, and Spencer panicked trying to reach him; it was sweet and emotional in a way that stayed with me. The story flowed well overall, and the emotional beats landed even if not all of them hit as deeply as I wanted. The ending was okay. I liked that Ryan now has a restaurant and that he proposed to Spencer, even though I was surprised Spencer said yes, because he was still learning to trust and open up again. Then again, after almost two years of hooking up, maybe it really was about time. What I took from the book is that persistence is the key to getting what you want. It was a good book, but it didn’t pull me in emotionally, romantically, or physically. My favourite quote was the playful “appetizer and cheap Chardonnay” exchange, and I didn’t need to pick a song because the author already made a playlist for the book. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4yE...
I had to hold off reading this book for a day or so due to real life and was thinking about it nonstop before, during, and now after finishing it. This is the second in the Damaged Hearts series, and the found family is hitting SO HARD. I loved every character we're meeting again, and those we met for the first time. I was so eagerly awaiting Spence and Butters book after the first and boy it did NOT disappoint.
These two...where to begin?? I thought Anthony and Chance felt destined in the stars, but Spencer and his Ryan are made for each other in ways that are incredibly hot, seriously sweet, and absolutely heartwarming. There were moments I was clenching my teeth so hard I thought my jaw would crack because I just wanted Spencer to ADMIT IT, YOU LOVE THAT BUTTERBALL! His hesitations and trauma were woven so well into the narrative that even though I was dying from the tension (and for poor Ryan's heart), I understood where he was coming from and felt for him so much. The moment he finally gives in had me about launch my Kindle across the room in relief.
Ryan...what an absolute sweetheart oh my gosh. I need a Ryan. You need a Ryan. EVERYONE NEEDS A RYAN. I'm so glad he has his sisters and friends as a support group (and again, the found family is such a crucial element of what makes this series work so well), and I'm so freaking happy he got his Mr "Perfect" in the end. That first kiss was TOE CURLING.
Jen and Lexi stay winning, and it was wonderful seeing the continuation of Chance and Anthony's story come to life before us.
Now I am SO CURIOUS about Murph...I know Jason and Deek come next, and I am excited for them as well, but Murph has my attention LOL. I cannot wait.
If you haven't checked out the Damaged Hearts series yet, I absolutely recommend starting with book 1 and falling in love with all these characters because you will, it is inevitable. They feel real and grounded and like close friends now and I will be seated for whatever J.P comes up for them next!!
I received an early copy of this book and these are my honest thoughts.

This book completely stole my heart. Ryan and Spencer are the perfect example of opposites attract done right, and I was obsessed with them from the very beginning. I knew I was going to love Butters and Spencer, but I was completely unprepared for just how obsessed I would become with them.
Ryan "Butters" Butterbaugh is sunshine in human form. Funny, loyal, endlessly caring, and hiding so much pain behind a dazzling smile. Spencer is his complete opposite—guarded, serious, and convinced that keeping people at a distance is the safest option. Watching Ryan slowly work his way past Spencer's walls was everything.
What makes this story so special is that their relationship is built on genuine friendship, trust, and respect. The banter is phenomenal, the chemistry is off the charts, and the way they become each other's safe place had my heart in a chokehold from beginning to end. Their journey from friends with benefits to all-consuming devotion felt so natural and beautifully written.
JP Joseph has an incredible talent for creating characters that feel real. Every emotion hit hard, every struggle felt authentic, and every victory felt earned. The found family in this book is just as wonderful as the romance, reminding us how powerful it is to be surrounded by people who choose to love and support you.
And can we talk about Butters? Because I would protect that man with my life. He is easily one of my favourite characters I've read this year.
Honestly, this book is AMAZING. Emotional, funny, heartbreaking, healing, romantic, and impossible to put down. I laughed, I cried, I fell completely in love with these characters, and I already know Ryan and Spencer are going to live rent-free in my head for a very long time.
🏈 Opposites attract 🏈 Friends with benefits to lovers 🏈 Golden retriever x black cat 🏈 Found family 🏈 Hurt/comfort 🏈 Emotional healing 🏈 Incredible banter 🏈 Football player MC 🏈 All the feels 🏈 HEA
An absolute must-read. Ryan and Spencer own a piece of my heart.
4.5 stars rounding up! ** I was so happy and lucky to receive an ARC from JP and this is my honest review.**
I absolutely loved Ryan (Butters) and Spencer! We met them in the first book, King of Pain. (You do not have to have read that book to understand this book but it’s also an amazing story).
Ryan is a professional football player and he is pure goodness and sunshine! Spencer is a lawyer and he is a very fashionable, closed off grump at least on the outside.
Ryan has been hiding himself his whole life and even though he has a lot of close friends he is lonely and longs to just be able to be his authentic self. Spencer has had different types of trauma in his life. He is determined to keep himself closed off and safe from getting hurt but he has a caring and kind heart. Ryan sees this a vows to himself never to give up and be patient with Spencer. They were perfect together and were meant to be!
JP has a way of writing characters that I can really get to know and feel I have a connection with. I get invested with the characters and I don’t want to leave them. He is also, once again, the king of writing a first kiss! ❤️ This book made me laugh. It made me swoon and fan myself to cool down from that spice. 🔥 It even made me tear up as well.
Seeing Anthony and Chance again was wonderful. There were past side characters I was happy to see and wonderful new ones. Dita, Harper, Cricket, and the Bettys!!!! Absolutely loved those ladies! And Tyler absolutely loved him and his relationship with Spencer and then with Ryan. JP knows how to write a found family, sweet, steamy, romance that brings out all the feels.
The reason for the half point off is because I really would have liked to see a bit more about what happened when Ryan did come out. It seemed like that happened and that was it.
Now I just have to try to patiently wait for Jason and Deacon’s story! I just know they are going to be entertaining!!

Spencer is guarded, stubborn, and determined to keep everyone at arm's length. Considering everything he's been through, those walls make sense. Ryan, on the other hand, is persistent as hell. This man simply refused to accept being kept out, and watching him slowly chip away at Spencer's defenses became one of my favorite parts of the story.
The chemistry between these two was immediate, but it wasn't just the attraction that kept me turning pages. Their banter was everything. Ryan's constant teasing mixed with Spencer's sharp comebacks had me smiling more than once. Even the smallest interactions felt important. A touch, a look, their moments of vulnerability..everything carried weight.
Several moments hit hard emotionally, especially when Spencer finally allowed himself to be vulnerable. Ryan's injury also forced both men to confront feelings neither of them could ignore anymore, and those scenes packed an emotional punch.
Watching Ryan's struggle with living authentically and the expectations placed on him made this hit harder. His coming-out journey felt meaningful and important because it was such a huge part of who he was.
Mr. Joseph balances the heavier moments with humor. The banter kept me from drowning in my feelings, and some of Ryan's antics had me laughing when I least expected it.
Although I haven't read King of Pain YET, I had no trouble connecting with these characters. I was completely invested from the beginning and genuinely struggled to put this book down.
Bone Deep is messy, emotional, sexy, funny, and surprisingly tender. More than anything, it's a story about choosing vulnerability, choosing love, and choosing to be your authentic self. In the world we live in today. This is the most important element of this story.
This is one of those stories that should be read by everyone.
∞ ⭐
I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review
This book felt like a five-course meal served up by J.P. Joseph. Every ingredient I love in a story was packed into these pages. We have rough beginnings, trauma, hope, tension, banter—and my God, did I laugh. We have heartbreak and love... so much love. So much found family. So much belief that when you have people in your corner and learn to believe you're worthy of that support, anything is possible.
We got to see our boys, Chance and Anthony, from book one, along with Jen, Lexi, and Beau. We also get some incredible new additions. The BETTYS. Hellooooo. And Ryan’s sisters, who are absolute gems. Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and boy, did it deliver in this book.
Butters. Sunshine. Ryan. He really is the human equivalent of a golden retriever, with an endless ability to believe in the people he loves and make sure they know just how special they are. His relentless pursuit of Spence and the courage it took to realize it was time to live the life he wanted made my heart soar. His goofy personality and one-liners had me smiling constantly. It was impossible not to love him.
Spencer. Spence. Spency. This man acts tough, but underneath that hard exterior is someone soft and gooey once you crack him open. I love watching a lone wolf realize he needs a pack, and that's exactly what happened here. Much like the Grinch whose heart grew three sizes, Spencer's heart grew at least five. What he did for Tyler pulled on every one of my heartstrings. He didn't even realize how big his capacity for love was until a quarterback with a sunshine smile set his sights on him, and then it was game over. Well... not before a full four quarters and maybe one OT!
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I have a feeling I know who's up next, and boy, is there going to be tension. Delicious tension.

Ryan Buterbaugh, America's favorite football player, son of a senator, all around great person is holding a very deep secret. He has spent most of his life keeping his true self hidden and has gotten rather good at it. Until he meets Spencer Stark and everything he has kept hidden begins to slowly be revealed.
Spencer Stark has convinced himself he doesn't need people. After a rather rough start to life, he has been guarded - following a strict set of rules, never getting close to anyone, never forming attachments. Attachments for him create chaos and it does not align with his perfectly constructed life. Then Ryan Butterbaugh barrels into his life like an unhinged golden retriever. Ryan is this vivacious man, full of love, energy and sunshine weaves his way into Spencer's heart slowly but persistently! The way their relationship explodes from best friends with benefits to all consuming devotion whether they recognize it or not they are each other's person and JP captures this relationship so beautifully. I absolutely adore these two.
What I love the most is their friendship above anything else, Ryan is bubbly. Spencer is serious but the respect they have for each other far outways the friends with benefits or the perfectly constructed "rules" set in place. Bone Deep blew me away just like King of Pain. These men will capture your heart, make you laugh and even cry. Added bonus: the fabulous found family of friends from King of Pain are back - along with some new amazing co-workers at THRIVE as well as Ryan's sisters and Tyler...but the true divas are the Betties - I will not spoil that, but they are a delight.
Bone Deep will be added to my best of 2026 list. I am obsessed with Ryan and Spence and will be talking about them for a long time. This is an absolute must read, do yourself a favor and pick up this book immediately!
Bone Deep JP Joseph Rating: 4/5 Genre: MM Couple: Spencer and Ryan Spice level: 3 Series: Damaged Hearts 2 Format: Digital Arc
Tropes: MM Romance, Grumpy vs Sunshine, Forced Prox, Coming Out, Football, Celebrity, Found Family, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers
Favorite Quote: “Woo-boy. If anyone ever looks at me the way that man looks at you, I’ll drop to my knees and show them why ten inches is my deep throat record.”
Thoughts: After reading the first book in a single setting, I was beyond excited to receive an arc copy of Bone Deep from JP. I knew from King of Pain, I was going to love Butters—Ryan—and the sunshine he radiates. The hunky golden retriever with the butt, was the perfect antidote to melt away Spencer’s hardened shell and pesky rules. Their story was cute, and although I thought at times there was a little too much fluff included—details about Every outfit or Every meal the two ate—I did enjoy being a part of their relationship. It kept me engaged and had me feeling both giddy. The arc of Ryan’s coming out I felt was honestly to clean. Don’t get me wrong, I loved his attitude and hope one day we can live in a world where people are not ridiculed for loving who they love, but the logistics of the whole thing felt unrealistic. Everything just felt like it was tied in a nice little bow and it worked out without a single hiccup. With that being said, I also know that this is fiction and a feel-good type of story. I really enjoyed Spencer’s character development and how much he grew and opened up both with Ryan and the rest of the crew. His love for Tyler was beautiful and I am hoping that we will see Ty more in the next book.
Favorite Characters: The Bettys and F*ucker :)
Over all, good read, and I can’t wait for book 3. Thank you JP for the arc!
Don’t you just hate it when you finish a book in a matter of hours because you simply can’t put it down, only to be completely heartbroken when the story comes to an end? 😞
After devouring King of Pain, the first book in the Damaged Heart series, last year, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Bone Deep—and it absolutely did not disappoint.
This beautifully written MM romance reunites us with Anthony, Chase, and several other firm favourites, while also introducing some unforgettable new characters. Ryan, a star NFL quarterback with serious golden retriever energy who simply wants to be loved for who he is, and Spencer, an impeccably dressed man whose carefully constructed walls keep everyone at arm’s length… except perhaps one very special four-legged companion.
JP Joseph has a real talent for creating characters you become deeply invested in, and watching Ryan and Spencer navigate their connection had me completely hooked from start to finish. Their story is packed with emotion, chemistry, vulnerability, and all the tension that makes a great MM romance impossible to put down.
As expected, there is plenty of angst, heat, and slow-burn longing (JP Joseph definitely likes to make his readers work for it! 🥵), alongside jaw-dropping moments that left me speechless and emotional scenes that had me reaching for the tissues.
I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to ARC read this book. I’ll definitely be purchasing a copy to sit proudly alongside my beautiful King of Pain trophy edition. Until then, I’ll be quietly missing Ryan and Spencer while impatiently counting down the days until Book Three arrives next year. 😭
A heartfelt, emotional, and utterly addictive MM romance that is a fantastic addition to the Damaged Heart series.
Wow! Just wow! I knew I was going to love Butters and Spencer but I literally could NOT have imagined I would love them this much! JP Joseph has a way to make you fall in love with every SINGLE character he writes! You connect with them on a different level. I fully believe this comes from they bond JP has with his characters. While each one can be drastically different you can tell they are ALL meaningful and it SHINES through in his writing.
This story is beautiful, and shows how much of an impact your found family can have. Those you chose to have around you, build you up, and are your support when the pieces fall apart. This story shows the strength that trust, and bonds formed, have on your life.
Ryan (Butters) literally has sunshine radiating from him, all the while hiding behind a mask and hiding his pain behind humor and a dazzling smile. He is my favorite kind of Himbo and I will love him forever. He is truly one of a kind and he holds such a special place in my heart.
Spencer is Ryan's polar opposite but that doesn't deter him one bit. His black cat personality draws Butters right in. Spencer has a huge heart buried under a heap of trauma and self preservation. It makes it all that much sweeter when you earn his love. Those special enough to see it, really know the gift they are being given.
This is a phenomenal story about learning to trust, forgive, and heal. It choosing the people you have surrounding you, and moving on from those who don't deserve to be there. Its love, and friendship. Brotherhood and support. It's LITERALLY EVERYTHING I want. If I could give this story more than 6 stars I would!
This book was worth every minute of the wait, and I cannot wait for Jason and Deacon! I NEED to know about the "purple ones" 😉
I was so curious about Ryan and Spencer’s story. After reading King of Pain, I knew the author was an incredible writer, so I expected this story to be beautifully written as well. I absolutely loved the contrast between the sunshine Ryan and the grumpy, reserved Spencer. In this story, we have two men who both carry their own secrets, but after their very first meeting, they just can’t get each other out of their heads. And even though Spencer would never admit it, he doesn’t really mind the fact that Ryan keeps popping up in his life all that much. We’re getting a heavy dose of hurt/comfort here, so you better prepare yourselves for a whole spectrum of emotions. But thanks to the familiar friends popping up and all the Betty's, we get some nice breathers from the heavier topics. It becomes pretty clear early on that things are gonna get hot in this story, but the absolute best comes a little later. Because after book one, I stand by my statement that this series has some of the absolute best first kisses. And the conversations, the slow opening up to another person, and the trust Ryan and Spencer build together is just beautifully written. I also think Ryan's amazing character deserves to be protected from all the evil in the world. He completely stole my heart right from the first pages, and he just kept melting me and making me laugh as I read on. If I could, I’d give him the recipes to every single cake I know. That being said, I must admit that Spencer didn’t completely win me over in this story. But the writing style, the banter between the characters, and that epic first kiss—it all comes together to create an incredible story. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in this series!
I knew I was going to love *Bone Deep* just as equally as I loved *King of Pain*, book one in the Damaged Hearts series by JP Joseph. Ryan "Butters" Buterbaugh is the perfect embodiment of a Golden Retriever. From the very beginning, he knows what he wants and isn't afraid to pursue it. In the first book, we learned that Ryan and Spencer had a connection, and by the second book, it's clear that Ryan is genuinely attracted to Spencer and is willing to do whatever it takes to get Spencer to notice him. Initially, he organizes gym sessions and plays a little game to secure some legal advice, but really, all he wants is to be close to Spencer.
Ryan and Spencer couldn't be more different. Ryan is a ray of sunshine, wearing his heart on his sleeve, while Spencer has constructed formidable walls to shield his heart. Spencer wants to be in control of everything around him. However, it's important to note that Ryan faces his challenges as well. His parents are terrible, which could easily bring him down, but he consistently finds the good in everything and wants the people around him to be happy. Despite having such difficult parental figures, Ryan maintains a wonderful relationship with his sisters, who are incredibly supportive of him.
While Ryan initially struggles to penetrate Spencer's defenses, a turning point comes when Spencer admits that the walls he has built around his heart can't withstand Ryan's relentless attention and care. No matter how hard Spencer tries to push Ryan away, Ryan remains undeterred in his mission to win Spencer's heart.
I also adored the found family dynamic presented in this book. Spencer has always felt like an outsider, but throughout this story, we witness their friend group making genuine efforts to include Spencer. Ryan's sisters embrace Spencer wholeheartedly, welcoming him into their family. This sense of belonging is something Spencer has never experienced before until he meets Ryan.
Another hit from JP Joseph! I expected nothing less. Thank you so much for the ARC of *Bone Deep*. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
JP Josephs writing is just unreal, there is something in it that just has you hooked from the get go, it's phenomenal!
This book was just everything and more! It had me laughing out loud so damn much! Ryan is just the most hillarious golden retriever you have ever met! And i tell you what, that guy has an abundance of determination. I absolutely ADORE him!!
And Spence, Spencester, Spency - oh how i love him too! His past, god love him. He has come so far by himself with his 'rules' and has made a great name for himself. The rules keep him in line and everything in order, that is until the beaming ray of sunshine that is Ryan walks into his life and turns his world upside down.
I thought i had made it through the book without shedding a tear, i nearly caved a few times but JP finally got me with a certain Golden Days scene! (IYKYK!)
This book was just PERFECT!!! In every 👏🏼 damn 👏🏼 way 👏🏼
I loved that we still got to see the whole gang from book one, i have missed Chance & Ant, and that we are introduced to so many more amazing characters. Ryan's sisters are literal queens, Tyler is just a bloody rock star!
I want to be in this friendship group so bad!
Ryan's secret Golden Days thing he has going on and what he makes for Betty!! - Be still my beating heart!!
I have never met a greener flag than Ryan!
I haven't laughed so much reading a book in SO LONG! Even writing this remembering some of the chapters and scenes has me smiling. And F*cker the cat - the little minx! The keyboard - NOT THE KEYBOARD! - what i would give to be on that live!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This is the second in the Damaged Hearts series. It can be read as a stand alone but I highly encourage you to read King of Pain first.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Spencer Stark & Ryan Michael “Butters” Buterbaugh are complete opposite. Lawyer-NFL Quarterback. Grumpy-Sunshine. Black Cat-Golden Retriever. Out-Closeted. They’re not even friends. More, friend adjacent. That doesn’t stop Ryan from making a complete nuisance of himself in order to get to know Spencer, who he is seriously obsessing over.
Spencer, though, has rules. No kissing. No sleepovers. No straight guys. And definitely no catching feelings. But Ryan’s hot & very persistent. Personal boundaries are not in his vocabulary.
I loved this book, stayed up until 1:30am to finish because I couldn’t put it down. I was completely invested in them & there were so many moments they had me laughing out loud. Their banter is 👩🏻🍳 💋 as is their inner musings.
“I decide to distract myself. There’s an abandoned tennis ball on the path. I stop, pick it up, and lob it halfway across the grass. It’s barely out of my hands before Ryan is off like a shot, running after it.
Oh. My. God. He’s an actual golden retriever.”
This book has slutty shorts, perfectly tailored suits, a chaos causing cat, meant-to-be vibes, a fabulous found family, pushy co-workers & 2 MC’s that have been through a lot but came out the other side stronger. This book does deal with abuse, homophobia & other issues so check the trigger warnings before reading.
First off, a massive thank you to the author for the ARC copy of the book. I knew going into it that I was going to love Bone Deep solely because of how much I loved King of Pain, and boy was I right! While Bone Deep can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading King of Pain first as we do get to see little bits of Ant & Chance’s story here! J.P. Joseph writes love without abandon and it’s just so lovely to see. To display true love in a way that shines through the trauma and heartache they have both experienced is a talent that leaves me breathless. I think my favorite romance trope is a happily ever after that is very hard earned, and this book sure is that. This is a true found family story where you learn to love not only our MCs but also the side characters (the Bettys sure stole my heart!) I unfortunately am not as good with my words as the author and reviewing this book without giving away all the buttery goodness (ha, get it?) within is hard for me, so I’m going to leave you with this quote to give you just a glimpse into the yearning: “God. I just need to be around him. I don’t even know why. Something about him pulls at me like gravity.” Oh…and I would be remiss to not mention the little furball named Fucker who sure knows how to stir up the chaos! I can’t wait for my physical copy and to hopefully (!!!) be able to listen to this story again on audiobook. I’m excited for Jason and Deacon’s story to come! If J.P. Joseph ever has no fans it’s because I’m dead.
After reading King of Pain, I was absolutely obsessed. I immediately fell in love with Chance and Anthony, and honestly, I wasn't sure anything could compare. But Bone Deep proved me wrong.
Ryan and Spencer's dynamic was absolutely delicious. Ryan is the definition of a walking green flag, and his banter was unmatched. Every single line that came out of his mouth had me laughing, smiling, and kicking my feet. He brought so much light and humor to the story, even when dealing with his own struggles.
On the other hand, Spencer is guarded, reserved, and carries the weight of his past so heavily. Watching him slowly open up felt like a privilege as a reader.
These are two broken people healing from completely different wounds. Ryan hides behind humor and laughter, while Spencer builds walls and keeps everyone at a distance. Their grump/sunshine dynamic was executed perfectly, creating both emotional depth and incredible chemistry.
J.P. Joseph continues to impress me with his writing. Every word feels intentional and purposeful to the story, and the emotional beats always land exactly where they need to. While King of Pain still holds a special place in my heart, Bone Deep was a fantastic read that delivered everything I wanted from these characters.
Overall, this was a 4-star read for me, and I can't wait to read more from J.P. Joseph.
Well, JP, you’ve done it again. After reading King of Pain, I didn’t know how you’d be able to follow that up but you did it!
The way JP writes about the themes of healing, resilience, and finding connection in unexpected places are handled with such care and authenticity. The emotional depth is beautiful, but let’s talk about the chemistry because Ryan and Spence are absolute fire together. 🔥
The contrast between Ryan’s golden retriever energy and Spencer’s stoic resistance made for the perfect mix of laugh-out-loud moments and delicious angst. No matter how hard Spencer fought it, Ryan refused to give up—and watching Spencer finally give in was everything. 🥹❤️
Every detail in this book shines, and you can tell how much care went into to. Even the minor characters have so much personality that you’ll fall in love with the whole cast (especially The Bettys!).
And yes, this book delivers some of the steamiest scenes I’ve ever read (I will never look at a can of whipped cream the same way!), but what makes the spice truly satisfying is how deeply the emotions are woven into every single moment.
Hands down, this is one of my favorite reads of the year. You MUST add this to your TBR! 📚
🧈 Tropes: • Hurt/Comfort • Found Family • Grump/Sunshine • High Heat • Possessiveness
When you read a debut book by a new author and absolutely love it, it makes you wonder, will the follow up be able to live up to it’s predecessor. In the case of Bone Deep, yes it does. With fully realized characters, both main and secondary, Bone Deep fulfills the hint of a relationship between Ryan “Butters” Buterbaugh and Spencer Stark from King of Pain. While tackling deeply emotional and traumatic issues that both Ryan and Spencer deal, this book is also amazingly humorous, and I laughed and cried my way throughout the book. Along with strong found family themes, the author, JP Joseph, has also written strong supportive female characters. This pulls you in from beginning to end as you follow along as Ryan and Spencer struggle with their issues and feelings as their hookups develops into a relationship and their hard fought HEA. Once I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day. While this book can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading King of Pain, the first book in the series. This series has become one that I will continue to reread for years to come.
First let me start off by saying this book is simply beautiful. Spencer and Ryan my gosh I fell in love with them right away. Ryan (Butter) Star Quarterback the senators son isn’t living his truest life. He’s hiding such a huge secret. Butter lays eyes on Spencer and it’s game over for him. Hard part Spencer has three rules. Butter is so loving has a huge heart and loves so fiercely. I’m keeping this as spoiler free as possible.
Spencer my gosh when you first meet him in king of pain he’s broody and reserved. Well the same goes in Bone deep. My heart literally hurt for him. At 15 years old he had to endure so much pain shame but he vowed to become something. Perfect what butter calls him. Has so many layers stack.
Ryan’s and Spencer my gosh they had their funny banter their friendship that turns into such a beautiful love story. I loved seeing the found family again. Did I expect to cry the way I did absolutely.
JP wrote this book with so much love, kindness and thoughtfulness. I am so overwhelmed with so much emotions I can’t truly put into words how amazing this book is.
