I received a free copy of, A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital, by Jo Bartlett, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book seven of seven in the Cornish County Hospital series. This is such a heavy read, TBI's change peoples' whole personality's sometimes,and they are never the same person. Eve's fiance Max, is not the same person she fell in love with, he is cruel to people who love him. This was such a heavy read, but a really good read.

As if the pressures of working as a doctor in St Piran’s busy A&E department aren’t enough, Eve’s also handling a particularly difficult situation in her personal life. With the date of her marriage approaching, her fiancé Max was randomly attacked and severely injured – he’s now living in a care home near his parents in Cornwall, and Eve has moved to the area to remain close to him.
With her own family uninvolved in her life, Max’s parents have become particularly important to her – his mother Annie finding it particularly difficult to accept that their marriage plans will never happen. Eve has chosen to keep her situation private while at work – she feels obliged to visit regularly, but his brain injury has brought about major changes in his personality and she’s finding his rejection particularly difficult to handle.
Felix is Max’s occupational therapist, and Eve is grateful for his friendly presence, which could easily develop into something more – although he admires her loyalty and devotion, and understands they can’t be more than supportive friends. And he certainly has some issues of his own – a past relationship with an impact that continues, his sense of guilt having followed him home from his former life in the US.
There are a few really substantial issues in this book, immaculately researched and handled with the exceptional sensitivity that’s always so very present in the author’s writing. Max’s rejection is acutely painful, desperately hurtful, and the emotional effect on Eve – always brave, always resilient despite the personal cost – moved me to tears at times. But one aspect of the book I very much enjoyed was the whole concept of family – if Eve thought she’d found that through Max’s parents, she hadn’t bargained for the safety net of love and support from her work colleagues when her situation became more widely known. And as she’s comforted by their embrace, it allows for some lighter moments (as there always are when Gwen is around) and a real warmth that makes life start to look a little more hopeful.
An emotional read, but a very rewarding and uplifting one – and, although easy to enjoy as a standalone, another perfect addition to this really lovely series.

I am always thrilled when I see another installment in the Cornish County series from Jo Bartlett as they are always so heartwarming and emotional. This was no different
Eve is an ER doctor who is engaged to her longtime love, who gets attacked on his bachelor party and it leaves him with a TBI. This of course, changes their life plans, as he has to be put but in a rehab center in order to rebuild his life.
it's now 2 years later and Eve is still committed to him and his mother is still convinced that they will still get married. but neither Eve nor Max want that, but dont know how to navigate their new relationship. Then a new therapist comes to the hospital and works with Max, and the sparks with him and Eve are immediate, but she is still committed to Max. She cant deny how she feels about Felix either. Felix brings new hope into the situation for all of them, but only if they will let it. especially Max's mom.
The story brings emotional depth and the cozy charm that Jo Bartlett fans have come to expect. It's a story of resilience, healing, romance and new beginnings and I cant wait for the next book!

I love this series set in Cornwall and the staff at St Piran’s Hospital.
Eve works as a doctor in A&E and has kept a low profile since she arrived. Eve is engaged to Max who was training to be a surgeon when horrific events changed his life overnight.
This book was sensitively written but emotional as we read how Eve navigates trying to please everyone at the expense of her own happiness.
Gwen is still my favourite character.

The 7th in the series, A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital is another fantastic instalment from Jo Bartlett. I love this series and each one has such a wonderful story with repeating characters from books before to remind you of the fantastic storyline read before. My favourite Gwen was front and central on several pages and I loved seeing her still involved in the hospital and community.
This is an emotional one from the start. Evie has been through so much and to see her story through Max’s injuries and change in personality is one of heartbreak and empathy. Her unconditional love for Max and his family was sorely tested at times and it was interesting seeing her be brave in establishing new friendships through her colleagues at the hospital to give her that support away from the intensity of her situation.
Her courage in making the decisions needed for all of them was to be applauded and certainly proved it was never too late for a fresh start.

The latest installment in the Cornish Country Hospital series. The book works as a standalone, but I would definitely advise reading the rest to fully understand returning characters - and for the fact they are lovely books!
After a horrific accident, A & E Doctor Eve and her fiance Max have to learn to live their lives in a different way. Occupational therapist Felix is there to help, and slowly new relationships form.
A beautiful story, but it is hard sometimes as a reader to work out what you want the characters to do - it feels like someone will always be hurt! It was great to see old favourite characters return, and I look forward to the next book by Jo Bartlett, a must read author for me.

A welcome return to the Cornish Hospital- this time Eve and Felix’s story.
Along with the staff we have met, these two are working towards a new relationship together. Eve, struggling to move on and Felix trying to fill the gap in his life now he is back in England.
Sensitive writing gives an insight into brain injuries and how it affects the patient and family, all the characters are so well written and instantly identifiable.
A great instalment and thoroughly enjoyable.

i love this series of books, they are like returning to the lives of old friends and you become so invested in their stories. what’s fab is though some of the characters pop up along the way these can be read as a standalone. a great light hearted read

A great story of overcoming a tragedy & the guilt that comes with moving on.
Learning to trust again and allowing herself to find love after her fiancé suffers a brain injury which catastrophically alters his personality is proving to be very painful for Eve as she contemplates losing the family she became part of.
Jo’s story telling is so full of emotion & warmth.
However with so many typos in this kindle version, whoever proof reads for Jo, needs to be more meticulous before allowing her books to be issued online.

It’s a real pleasure catching up with familiar faces while also following a story that works beautifully as a standalone. Jo Bartlett handles difficult themes such as grief, trauma, and addiction with great sensitivity, allowing them to deepen the emotional impact rather than overwhelm the romance at the heart of the book. Eve’s journey of rebuilding her life after loss is moving, hopeful, and deeply relatable, and watching her slowly rediscover herself is incredibly satisfying.
The hospital setting once again feels comforting and immersive, filled with compassion, community, and support. The romance develops gently and naturally, making this a true feel good read without shying away from real life challenges. This book was good but I was not able to relate to the FMC much. I understood her pain, her loyalty, but her lack of interest / gumption to redefine her realationships was just annoying, especially since it was dragged on to the very end. Felix was a lovely personality, kind, strong and supportive. He really carried the story for me.
Overall a decent read.

A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital is the seventh book in The Cornish Country Hospital series. The story is complicated, complex, and emotional. Both Eve and Felix have baggage that has prevented them from moving on after tragedies befell both of their significant others. Eve loses more and more of herself each day and Felix tortures himself with the what-ifs. When Eve and Felix meet, the chemistry is electric, surprising them both.
Eve and Felix's story, while a tear-jerker, also delivers hope, found family, and love. I love their characters, how the author drew them together, and the emotional connection they have. A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital is another story written with incredible realism and care. There are hard topics in this novel and the author delivered them with compassion, respect, and eye-opening knowledge.
This book took me a little bit longer to read than I anticipated because the topics are so deep. I stepped away more often than I generally do; not because I didn't like the book, but because my emotions were all over the place. I didn't want to miss anything because I was still dwelling on a particularly heartwrenching scene.
I was completely engaged in A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital, even when I wasn't reading it at any particular point. I was drawn in by the characters, their plights, and pasts . Eve and Felix's story, while a tear-jerker, also delivers hope, found family, and love. I love their characters, how the author drew them together, and the emotional connection they have. A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital is another story written with incredible realism and care. There are hard topics in this novel and the author delivered them with compassion, respect, and eye-opening knowledge.
This book took me a little bit longer to read than I anticipated because the topics are so deep. I stepped away more often than I generally do; not because I didn't like the book, but because my emotions were all over the place. I didn't want to miss anything because I was still dwelling on a particularly heartwrenching scene.
I was completely engaged in A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital, even when I wasn't reading it at any particular point. I was drawn in by the characters, their plights, and pasts . I was kept engaged by their strength, emotional intelligence, and interactions. I needed to know how everyone faired at the end and that they would be okay. Superb novel. Highly recommended.

Love this series. Whilst it has a nice comfy reading style it also covers deeper issues and always covered in a way that shows the reality of life for many different people. If you’ve enjoyed all the others. You’ll most certainly enjoy this installment.

Eve Bellingham thought that she had her life pretty much mapped out but then the fickle finger of fate intervened and she had to reconsider everything about her life going forward. With her seriously injured fiancé in a rehabilitation unit Eve relocates to be nearer to him and in doing so becomes part of the medical family at St Piran’s Hospital although her new medical colleagues have no idea what Eve is having to deal with in her private life.
With her usual flair for small details the author brings this quiet corner of Cornwall to life and as we follow Eve’s emotional journey so we also meet again with the familiar characters who make this series so enjoyable. With compassion and understanding for all the minutiae of medical detail we get to know Eve as she treats those patients who find themselves in her care at the A&E department and yet it is in the finer details of the trauma which was suffered by Eve’s fiancé, and his family, where the emotional heartstrings really start to pull.
As always with this author’s lovely stories I raced through the book almost in one sitting, eager to discover just how Eve’s story would evolve especially in light of her burgeoning friendship with her colleague, Felix, who is also having to make some really tough life choices. Beautifully written, and filled with heartfelt compassion, A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital is another lovely story in this very popular series of medical/romance books.

A fresh start for Eve feels like the perfect January read . Eve has moved down to Cornwall where her fiance and his family are based but is in a difficult position. You sense her loneliness as the man she was engaged to has been changed by a serious brain injury and is being cared for and being readied for sheltered living. Eve has buried herself inher work at the Cornish Country Hospital but avoided getting too close to new friends as she has tried to keep Max's situation private. She does however find herself getting close to his occupational therapist, Felix, who we have met before.
Felix has returned from America following a bruising relationship and upi come to realise that he is carrying a huge amount of guilt and anguish at the break u[. Eve also has to negotiate how she deals with Max's family who she clings to for support and longs to be part of their dynamic. Max's mother is particularly difficult as she fails to see that Max's injuries are irreversible and that Eve's relationship with him has changed. Eve shows qualities of compassion and empathy towards Max's family but is so desperate to belong that she is not facing up to reality.
The relationships between all the characters are interesting and shed light on each other as Eve looks to forge a new life amid such changes.

Book 7 in the Cornish Country Hospital series was only the second book that I have read from this series but it can most certainly be read as a standalone. What I particularly enjoyed about this book was the fact that Jo Bartlett successfully interweaves really serious issues such as alcoholism as well as the aftermath of brain injuries into a poignant, warm romance.
I will definitely go back and read more books from this series and look forward to any additions in the future too!

As usual, Jo Bartlett uses her books to tackle some complex subjects, and this one was particularly close to home. We meet both Eve and her Fiancé, Max, as they are a matter of weeks away from their big day when disaster strikes. A random attack leaves Max with life-altering injuries, forcing Eve to make some enormous adjustments to her life to provide the love and support that she feels obliged to give him. Her obligations have added weight as Annie, Max’s mother, refuses to accept that he will never fully recover. Sadly, Max is not even vaguely interested in being with Eve and makes it clear whenever he gets the opportunity.
Eve lost her own mother as a young girl, and her father was never interested in becoming a parent in the true sense; instead, he remarried and moved abroad. Eve has come to view Max’s family as her own, which has added to the pressure to maintain the pretence of being a devoted fiancée to Max.
Once again, Jo’s meticulous research is evident from the start, and it was a real eye-opener to delve so deeply into brain injuries, the difficulties that come with adjusting to them, and the subsequent recovery process.
I completely understood Eve’s position and felt for her as she battled with her internal instincts towards loyalty and her own desires for freedom. The emotions were relatable, and I felt her pain. However, not everything was gloom and doom; she eventually realised that her colleagues at St Piran’s offered her a different yet equally loving version of being part of a family.
We met Felix in a previous book; he is Eden's brother who also works at the hospital with her partner, Drew. When we first met him, he had just returned from America, and little was said about his story, but we learn a lot more once he appeared as Max’s occupational therapist. A role he excels at that also brings him into contact with Eve. Felix is a strong, principled character who strives to make others' lives better. The motivation behind this soon becomes clear as his past is laid bare.
For the avoidance of spoilers, I will close here, but I encourage you to read this excellent book and meet some of the most admirable characters I have encountered in some time.

A Fresh Start at the Cornish Country Hospital was a heart-warming novel that I read in one sitting. Jo Bartlett takes the reader on an emotional journey. With some lovely characters, this book was difficult to put down. A delightful addition to the series.

Unfortunately, the injury has drastically altered Max’s personality, and he is no longer the man Eve fell in love with. This seventh book in the Cornish Country Hospital series is delightful. The author has dealt with some extremely challenging, and emotive subjects in such a empathetic, thoughtful and considered way. She doesn’t sugarcoat the difficult subjects but deals with them clearly, factually and honestly.
PLEASE BE WARNED that this book touches on subjects such as assault, TBI’s, drug use and rehabilitation, death and PTSD.
Eve’s patience and commitment to Max and his family and her struggles to carve a life for herself really pulled at the heart strings and I really liked both her and Felix’s characters.
Eve and Felix’s relationship is a very slow, steady process and fits in with the story timeline perfectly. The progression of their relationship is written and it’s very tasteful. No open door scenes, nothing more than a kiss is portrayed on page and in this day and age where authors seem to compete in shock value this book was a refreshing change.
Max’s change in character following his assault was described perfectly, I know someone who suffered a brain injury and could see a lot of my friend mirrored in Max’s behaviour and speech. It was clear that the author had done thorough research on all the subjects dealt with.
I read an ebook copy at around 290 pages and with a beautiful, colourful cover that fits with previous books in this delightful series and excellent editing, I highly recommend this book.
