Bledi Terziu, un reportero de la crónica negra sin trabajo y abandonado por su pareja, se desespera en la soledad de su recién instalado apartamento en el centro de Tirana cuando es visitado por una joven gitana. De resultas de sus escarceos, de forma accidental aunque no inocente, la muchacha muere y, entre el inútil intento de ocultación del crimen y la confusa desesperación por no ser culpable y considerarse sin embargo responsable, nuestro hombre reconstruye su pasado oscuro y miserable, por los vericuetos de la Tirana opresiva del régimen comunista y la corrupta e insensata de la transición, hasta llegar al año 2004, plenamente instalada la nueva sociedad liberal, con todo el brillo de sus luces y la oscuridad de sus lacras.

About the author

Fatos Kongoli has recently become one of the most forceful and convincing representatives of contemporary Albanian prose.

He studied mathematics in China during the tense years of the Sino-Albanian alliance.

Kongoli chose not to publish any major works during the dictatorship. Rather than this, he devoted his creative energies at the time to an obscure and apolitical career as a mathematician, and waited for the storm to pass.

His narrative talent and individual style only really emerged, at any rate, in the nineties, since the fall of the communist dictatorship.

La novela es entretenida, avanza con fluidez. Y podría haber sido quizás inolvidable si no fuera por un detalle que, desde mi perspectiva, resulta innecesario por lo poco logrado: la supuesta locura de Bledi Terziu, el protagonista. Y es que el asesinato accidental de una gitana, que es de donde eclosiona la novela, habría dado un tono de absurdo existencial, más o menos como el asesinato igualmente accidental de El extranjero de Camus, si no fuera por esa intención de dar un tono de sordidez demasiado trágica a la evocación del pasado de Terziu, que por sí mismo no parece demasiado fuera de la normalidad que Kongoli retrata, menos aún para justificar el nacimiento de ninguna locura. Pero quién sabe, quizás sólo estoy de amargado.
