I don't know what it is about these stories but I can't get enough.

description

The last volume felt like the readers were finally getting a peek into Alexandra Trese, but this one is vastly more personal. It isn't just a collection of mysteries that she has to solve involving the paranormal, this is her family fighting an invasion.

description

A god is flooding the city. As they do.
But some other creatures are taking advantage of the storm and hunting humans. Add to that a street drug that is taking normal monsters and supercharging them, and Alexandra has her hands full saving the people of Manilla.

description

I loved it!
Can't wait to read the next volume.

The covers for the last three Trese books are probably the worst of the entire series so far. It is nowhere as iconic as the covers of the first three book. I recognize that there is a plan for a multi-panel image for the at least nine books but still, casual readers may not understand the rationale of why the left part of a human torso and arm are the major images of a cover.

Good thing is that I don't judge a book by its cover and this new installment of Trese shows the burgeoning skill and confidence of Budjette Tan as a writer. His confident enough in his abilities to add more characters, which gave us a super team and an future antagonist Tan has built up since book five. I have a feeling it's going to payoff big and I want to be there.

The artist, Kajo Baldisimo, has also shown tremendous growth. His lines are much more richly rendered than the earliest Trese book. This installment was a challenge that he overcome as Tan threw at him more characters than previous books. However, I am a bit iffy of his design for the Verdugo which resembled Raiden from Mortal Kombat. I keep expecting him to throw down some lightning to smite the fishmen on steroids that are the main villains of this installment.

Trese 6 is yet another worthy example of how the creative team of Tan and Baldisimo are at the top of the powers and the envy of their peers. They have made Trese the best continuing graphic novel series in the Philippines right now.

Trese has a fervent fanbase of mostly Filipino readers excited for the upcoming Netflix anime. Here's a primer on the character and the graphic novel series.

"High Tide at Midnight" is the most fast-paced, action-packed, and exciting Trese installment for me. I enjoyed all the scenes with Alex, the Kambal, and Maliksi (who really needs a cool tagline). I also loved the Verdugo's superhero squad and I wish that they'd team up again in the sequels!

On a different note, I consider the Madame as one of the cunning and manipulative villains that I can take seriously. I'm looking forward to see how Alex will deal with her in the future installments.

These comics are absolute genius and this volume particularly made me want to reread the previous ones so I can go back and trace some of the connections I've missed.

Just, just perfect! I'm out of words to describe how good this volume is. Having just started reading the series this year, I can't imagine the agony of the avid readers of the series in waiting for the next volumes. I was actually contemplating if I'll read this volume knowing that it will again take months before Trese 7 comes out. But I really can't help it because Trese 5 was such a cliffhanger. This volume is the thickest among those that were previously released and it lived up to the expectations.

I had goosebumps while reading this volume. I believe that Baldisimo and Tan were on top of their games with this volume. The writing is exquisite, engrossing and totally well thought of. And the artwork? It's glorious! It's more refined and detailed. I can't ask for more with how good the writing and artwork is. For avid fans, it's really worth the wait. And yes, being one of the fans, this is by far the best volume for me.

This book follows the same format as that of Trese 5, wherein one story is divided into chapters instead of one story per chapter like the first four volumes. In this volume the author presented compelling back stories of the Trese clan which tied some loose ends. It was great to explore more of the back stories about Alexandra's clan specifically those relating to her brothers. I am looking forward to reading more about the history of the new characters that were added. I also like how the author was able to interweave stories that we're featured in the previous volumes and connect it with the present. The author was able to properly introduce the readers to the bigger picture at hand and it really gives a lot of room as to what needs to be expected in the coming volumes. The ending gave clues as to where the book is heading. The tandem of Baldisimo and Tan have already mastered the art of interweaving Philippines folklore, urban legends and local brands and personalities to the series.

I am glad that this novel added some new set of characters to aid Alexandra in dealing with supernatural forces of evil that lurks in the Metro in this modern age. The book has now this X-Men-ish type of thing going on which I totally find cool. There's one who has a metal hand, one who moves like the speed of light, one who controls the wind and two who master the water element among others. By doing that, Alexandra became more human by making her appear to be not that invincible.

In this volume our heroes dealt with sea monsters that lurks in the floodwaters wanting to gain control of the city. The creatures became more powerful and created a lot of casualties as a drug circulated in the black market that let the creatures have the abilities of other creatures. It's also not just another volume that only involves fight scenes. This volume also involves conspiracies from different tribes of supernatural creatures with humans who wants to gain popularity from the masses. Madame's presence posses a great danger in the stability of the balance between the connection of the underworld and the humans. It looks like a war is looming.

Graphic novels are not really my cup of tea but this series continues to amaze me with every volume that I read. The series really deserves to be awarded the Philippine National Book Award for Best Graphic Literature. I can't contain my excitement to read the next volumes! Kudos to Sir Balidisimo and Sir Tan for they outdo themselves in this volume! :)

Super intense! I love the squad! I'd love to meet the rest of the Trese brothers, the creatures in the Balete tree during Alex's training, and know more of Madame's revelations! They should release installments soon! :D

Storm clouds gather (literally and figuratively) over the fair city of Manila as rogue members of the Karagatan/Ocean tribe make a bid for power. Monstrous man-eating taga-dagats, made even more redoubtable by a strange drug that gives them the means to temporarily assume another species' abilities, plunge the city underwater to carve a blood-spattered kingdom over its watery grave. It's up to Alex and her gang and allies to stop them before they turn the population into either human sacrifices or fish food.

But all of this action pale in comparison to the real game that's afoot as the Madame's machinations come to the fore. It's truly chilling to see how unfettered self-aggrandizement and lust for power can hide behind a gleaming facade of benevolence and compassion. By the end, the lines are well and truly drawn as Alex begins to take a stand against her formidable nemesis.

It's nice seeing the rest of the Trese squad join forces in a monumental crisis. It's a good thing the next volume came out recently - imagine waiting five years to get it!

I have to commend Baldissimo for the rip roarin' art though. For a graphic novel and a monochromatic one at that, the action is so surprisingly kinetic it's mesmerizing. And of course we have Tan to thank for the lovely stories that are not all flash and style. These are modern myths that have brains and more importantly, soul behind them.

I'm rating this 8/10 or 4 stars out of 5.

I like that we meet Trese's brothers! I also like the group of people that comes together for the big fight and how they all get a small moment for character building.

It looks like this is the last volume published in the US but there are two more out there after this. I hope I can track them down. This volume ends with the promise of a big villain and it's unfortunate the US printing stopped here.

This is the last book of the series but I sure do want more! I don't know what to feel at that ending but that was actually a good way to end the series, I think. I enjoyed the comics so much and I can't wait for the netflix adaptation.

In the first two books, I've wanted for the cases to be longer and not just flash bangs. Wherein, each case would be fleshed-out, more that there might be two to three cases per volume, all of them contributing to a major arc.

Volume #6 was a bit of a... bore compared to previous issues, probably because it solely focused on one thing (despite undercurrents from the Madame). Or maybe I just don't like sea creatures.

*It was great to be introduced to the eldest Trese sibling. He reminded me of another comic book vigilante superhero whose name escapes me right now.

*What do they do when dozens of civilians witnessed a 60+-foot tall fish monster? Does the Trese world have a Mist like in the Percy Jackson books that masks what mundanes see?

4.5 mystical stars!

A solid installment that takes several story threads from past volumes to weave a bigger story. Now we discover that some incidents in the past are only glimpses of a bigger picture. As always, I loved how Philippine folklore, urban legends and local personalities are interwoven in this series. I wouldn't say no to more appearances by the rest of the Trese clan. I also hope the backstory of the other members in Verdugo's squad will be explored in future volumes, in particular Seepul (cos she's awesome) and maybe more on Hank and the Metalero. The ending is obviously a set up for a bigger story arc and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next volume.

A reflection of Manila’s flood problem. The story is sure getting darker and meatier. Budj and KaJo is incorporating their previous volumes and progress it on a much bigger picture.

Supernatural creatures are getting weirder with the sorbetero’s treat. Alexandrea and the kambals needed help than ever. In this installment Trese Clan and friends are united to protect Manila from its unseen dark world that threatens it.

I’m so eager to get my hands and get lost with the next Trese and beyond it.

PS: The title should be the league of Trese. Hahaha

First comic to read on 2015. Worth of waiting and so many good scenes and stories Budjette and Kajo have done this time. I really like how they use Madame for this volume and putting all the Trese siblings into a superhero group saving the lives the people in a super typhoon which was fitting for supernatural. My hunger for this comics continues to grow and I'm sure the next one will be even more exciting.

See my review of Trese #1 ("Murder on Balete Drive") for a broader assessment of the series.

I liked "High Tide at Midnight" a lot, second only to #3 ("Mass Murders")--bearing in mind that I still haven't read #2. Like #3, this volume follows a single plot-line through the entire book--flooding in Manila and the dangerous sea-creatures it brings into contact with people. It's probably the furthest foray into social commentary I've seen in Trese, portraying the "preventable tragedy" aspects of flooding and showing policymakers making callous and corrupt decisions. As part of this aspect of the plot, it also does a great job of further tying "The Madame" (Trese's archnemesis, Imelda Marcos) into the overall plot arc of the series.

This volume also might be the most "traditional comic-book-like" one in the series so far, with Trese gathering her squad of pseudo-Avengers together to combat the threat, which takes the form of monsters that almost literally "level up" into ever-more-threatening forms. It's good for what it is, though I personally prefer the more detective-type stories from some earlier volumes. I did like the way Tan used the "getting the crew together" plotline to bring back the character of Bantay, who has an interesting and complex relationship with Alexandra due to events earlier in the series (in "Mass Murders" #3).

If you're a new fan of Trese from watching Netflix and can't wait for more stories, this one is for you. We don't know if there will be a continuation of the TV Series. So it's safe to read this from the story of Season 1, which covered Books 1 to 3.

Volume 6 sees Trese the series take a different, not unwelcome direction - Instead of a stand alone monster hunter, Trese has to call in back up and we get the foundation of a superhero style team.

The city is suffering a terrible rainstorm causing the worst floods anyone's ever seen. 4 clans of sea monsters; the Taga-Dagat are running amok and they are pumped full of a new drug that's just hit the streets giving them the powers of other monsters.

I love the world of Trese. The creatures and magic based on Philipine mythology is a breath of fresh air to the urban fantasy genre. This is something new and fresh for western audiences - giving us a fantastic array of strange monsters never before seen. But its also great for native audiences taking Philipine mythology out of the past and fusing it with modern sensibities and current urban fantasy tropes. It's edgy, fast paced and exciting.

This volume is really good in terms of story arc - we catch up with Trese's brother and its far less stand alone than previous volumes - There's super villains manipulating behind the scenes and the good guys have to band together for the first time to create a team.

There's nothing out there that's quite like Trese and its a wonderful addition to the urban fantasy genre. I hope we get many more volumes to come.

"Trese #6: High Tide at Midnight" by Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo was okay. Average. The illustrations here were quite different from the previous books. The story was about the flood, war, some backstories, and Alexandra Trese's family. As mentioned before, despite liking stories about the family of Trese, I prefer reading cases, which now explains my rating.

My actual rating is 2.5/5 stars.

This was such an intense volume and I enjoyed reading every second of it. It's thrilling and action packed. The bad guys are stronger and the main enemy has a ruthless vision for the city that goes against what Trese is trying to maintain which is balance. I think this makes madame a worthy opponent.

Despite reading this in my least favorite way (as an e-book), I would have to say this was the most delicious installment in the series. So much happened and so much was at stake. Some scenes were truly terrifying. I can't wait for the next books in the series because I need to know how this story arc plays out!

If this is to be the last Trese it goes out with an action packed bang including kaiju action in torrential rain.

Kajo seem to have developed his art introducing intense cross hatched shading working very well in black and white.

Hope we'll get a continuation.
