Me a-b-u-r-r-e.
Over, otra de “culos”.

“The Final Problem.”
“That’s where we leave it then?”
“More or less, a kind of strange truce.”
So, what is the final problem, Mr. Sherlock Holmes?
Drawing inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1893 story “The Final Problem”—Holmes’s legendary confrontation with Professor Moriarty—this novel cleverly reimagines what it means to step into the mind of the world’s most famous detective.
Set in the summer of 1960 and beautifully translated from Spanish by Frances Riddle, the story unfolds on a remote Greek island where nine guests find themselves stranded by a storm. Among them is Ormond Basil, an out-of-work English actor best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes in a long-running film series. When a murder disrupts their uneasy isolation, the group turns—somewhat desperately—to Basil, asking him to inhabit the role that once defined him.
It’s an intriguing premise: can someone who has played Holmes actually become him?
Basil, having spent years immersed in Holmes’s logic and methods, rises to the challenge with a mix of confidence and uncertainty. But as more deaths occur, the mystery deepens into a classic locked-room puzzle layered with misdirection, secrets, and shifting suspicions. The comparisons also to Agatha Christie are well-earned—there’s that same sense of theatrical tension, where everyone is both a suspect and a potential victim.
What makes this story particularly enjoyable is its self-awareness. It plays with the idea of performance versus reality, asking whether deduction is a skill that can be learned—or merely imitated. Basil is a likable, slightly flawed protagonist, and the supporting cast adds just enough intrigue to keep the pages turning.
While the pacing leans toward a slow burn, the atmosphere is rich and rewarding. The unraveling of the mystery is satisfying, even if it takes its time getting there, and the central question—who committed the crime, and why—remains engaging throughout.
Clever, nostalgic, and quietly suspenseful, this is a thoughtful homage to the Golden Age of detective fiction. And like any good Holmes-inspired tale, it reminds us: just because something seems inexplicable doesn’t mean it is.
And now, also a series on Netflix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLeja...

This new locked room mystery is a little bit meta while also paying tribute to the Golden Age.
A storm has suspended travel to and from Utakos, a small Greek island. The resort occupants are shocked to discover one of their own dead in the beach cabana -- with a chair wedged under the doorknob. Suicide? Not so fast.
Here are some reasons you might want to read this one:
🔍Staying on Utakos is the former Sherlock Holmes himself. Ormond Basil did such a good job of portraying the legendary sleuth that he has become the face that the world associates with the man. Since he is there and the police are delayed, why not do some investigating?
📚Sherlock has to have a Watson and a mystery author steps in to fill the bill. Paco Foxa seems to know the stories almost as well as Basil. Will their collaboration stop a murderer?
📨Despite the efforts of Ormond and Paco, the murderer seems to always be one step ahead of them. They are given so many clues, yet seem to get further and further from the truth.
🎥Throughout the book, Ormond name drops a plethora of star names from the Golden Age. He has worked with Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Jane Russell, and many more. All those references do a great job of immersing the reader in that time in history.
While I enjoyed this one, the translation seemed a bit clunky. The many quotes from Sherlock Holmes were a delight, but I often had to reread chunks of text to get my bearings. Happy Publication Day - February 10, 2026! Thank you to Little Brown and Company and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

No he visto a Sherlock Holmes en Hapolong Basil.

Second book by the author, and I really wish my Spanish language comprehension was stronger. I'm mostly able to read but I miss out on context, verb tense, and a few other details. So I read in English, and I worry the translations lose something that really makes the book stand out, at least for me. Nothing wrong with the translation, just that it's a little too straightforward simple and on the nose with the Great Detective. Interesting plot. Good pacing and humor, but missed the boat for me on a few levels. Sorry!

An aging actor known for playing Sherlock Holmes vacations on a Greek island when people begin dying. A mystery writer staying at the same hotel incessantly kisses this actor's ass and becomes his "Watson" as the actor takes on the role he knows so well and tries to figure out the culprit.
It's slow. It's annoying. I've never been less interested in how a book ends.

This is a book that is going to be very appealing to the right reader. Who is that reader? Someone with a deep love of Sherlock Holmes books. The story is also influenced by numerous references to Agatha Christie novels and classic locked room mysteries.
And if you have an interest in movies of the 30s and 40s, all the better since the book is replete with references to those films and the people who made them. The main character is a mostly-retired actor who is best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in 15 films. His name is Ormond Basil (yes, I know, but I am only the reader, not the author, so don’t blame me), and he bears a remarkable physical resemblance to the drawings of Holmes that accompanied the stories when they were originally published in The Strand.
In June, 1960, Basil and a handful of other characters are stranded in a hotel on a small island near Corfu when a storm prevents all traffic by sea. Over the course of the several days this goes on, three people are murdered. Basil, with a Spanish author of crime fiction as his Watson, is asked by the others to put on his deerstalker and figure out what is going on.
There are quotes from the Holmes stories on every page, but the references to Christie novels are there as well: And Then There Were None, Three Act Tragedy, and Cards on the Table, three of my favorites.
I can’t say the writing is brilliant, but it’s far from terrible. Mostly this one is about plotting, and the interplay between Basil and the unknown murderer, and Basil and the reader, since he approaches his duties as if what he is doing is all part of a Holmes story.
It was a lot of fun for me, and if you like this kind of thing, I’ll bet it would be for you as well.

"You're a hostage to your own role, that image of the perfect detective that your movies left in all of our minds."
Basil Rathbone, the quintessential personification of Sherlock Holmes, is on a Greek island having met a film director who wants him to be involved in a new project.
It is the mid 1960's and Basil ( Ormond or Hoppy) has been invited to join the director on his yacht when they decide to stop off at a small Greek island. The weather changes and they are unable to leave. A small group of guests and staff are present. The suspicious death of one guest results in the entourage asking Mr Rathbone to use his experience as Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death - he is accompanied by a Spanish author Paco Foxá - who takes the mantle as Watson.
More mystery and death ensues. This is a wonderfully clever novel. Arturo Pérez- Reverte's knowledge and research of the Sherlock books and Basil Rathbone films is impressive - intertwining quotes and acknowledging events.
This is also an exploration of murder mystery novels and the role of the author and the construction of the genre; there is a sense of cat and mouse in the book as the murderer appears to be playing games with Rathbone.
A thoroughly enjoyable and equally fascinating read. Highly recommended for lovers of murder mysteries

¡No cabe duda!

¡No cabe duda!

The Final Problem hits all of my pop culture favorites, classic mysteries, 30s/40s films, and mysteries set in glam, old-fashioned vacation destinations with an international group of suspects. There’s also a very heavy dose of Sherlock Holmes references throughout. Your appetite for these things will definitely make you love or dislike this book.
All of the clues are there for the reader to solve the mystery, and I hate to admit I failed to figure out whodunnit until right before the big reveal.
The narrative is as slow and languid as a day spent on an isolated Greek island. I did enjoy the slow pace, but there were moments I wished the mystery would have progressed a bit faster. There are too many moments where our actor turned detective muses that he can’t possible be a detective because he is only an actor and other characters endlessly encourage him to keep investigating. These are very minor complaints though, as I enjoyed my time between the covers of The Final Problem very much.

For those too young to know, the narrator of The Final Solution, an over-the-hill English movie star who made 15 Sherlock Holmes movies in the 1930s and 1940s, is a thinly veiled version of Basil Rathbone. First of all, the protagonist is named Ormond Basil, for heavens’ sake! Second of all, both of them were so typecast by portraying the Great Detective that they had trouble finding work ever after, despite having starred on the stage and in quite a few swashbuckling films previously, having to settle for bit parts or whatever came their way. Lastly, in both cases, the actors created the public’s vision of Sherlock Holmes: tall, thin, beak-nosed, arrogant, taciturn.
Back to The Final Problem, the novel. Basil, accompanied by two movie pals, ends up on the fictional Greek island of Utakos during a terrible storm that cuts them off from neighboring Corfu and, therefore, the outside world. In the meantime, a middle-aged Englishwoman recovering from a bad romance is found dead by hanging in their hotel’s cabana. Suicide? Basil and his “Watson” (Spanish pulp-fiction novelist Francisco “Paco” Foxá) don’t think so. What follows are enough twists and turns to match not only Conan Doyle but any of the best of the Golden Age mystery novelists.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended to put an end to legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in the 1893 short story “The Final Problem,” as Holmes appears to die, along with archcriminal Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland. Two years later, after being hounded to no end by Holmes fans and Conan Doyle’s own friends, the author brought Holmes back, releasing Holmes novels and short stories until 1927. Here’s to hoping that author Arturo Pérez-Reverte, like Conan Doyle before him, responds to readers’ clamor for more; we all want sequels to this The Final Problem!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley; Little, Brown and Company, and Mulholland Books in exchange for an honest review.

I was up until 1am finishing this last night. A very good mystery with plenty of possible leads and red herrings. I went down a false trail until the very end. Always remember Clouseau: "I suspect everyone and I suspect no one."
Ormond Basil is our narrator and detective . An aging actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes, he is called on to solve murders in a hotel on a tiny isolated island near Corfu. He seems loosely based on Basil Rathbone (or Razzle Bathbone, as my father used to call him). I suspect Foxá, the Spanish novelist who assumes the rôle of Watson is Pérez-Reverte's own avatar in the story. No doubt he has always wanted to be a character in one of his novels.
The whole is an homage to Sherlock Holmes, books and films. Every chapter his a quote from the stories as its epigraph. The narrative is full of allusions and quotes. The story is no less an homage to the golden age of Hollywood, with numerous references to famous stars and films.
A lot of fun. Start early so you aren't up too late.

The Final Problem by Arturo Pérez-Reverte is an old-school, golden-age style historical mystery set in 1960, and it’s honestly a blast if you love a closed-circle “we’re trapped together and someone’s lying” setup. The story follows Orman, a washed-up actor who once played Sherlock Holmes in more than fifteen movies. Now he’s reduced to a small role on a film shoot on the Greek island of Utakos—and then a storm strands the entire group for about a week. That’s when a murder hits, and of course everyone turns to Orman like, “Well… you’re basically Holmes, right?”
And here’s the thing: I really liked Orman in this role. Not because he’s a genius detective overnight, but because he’s carrying around this strange mix of ego, exhaustion, nostalgia, and reluctant responsibility. He’s a man who has lived inside a famous character for years, and now the world is forcing him to prove whether any of that brilliance rubbed off—or whether it was all just lighting, scripts, and good camera angles. That tension is such a fun hook.
The 1960 backdrop is pure flavor in the best way. I loved the name-dropping and the way Orman talks about the movie world—who he “knew,” who he worked with, the way celebrity feels both glamorous and kind of hollow when you’re no longer the hot thing. The island setting is also perfect: isolated, moody, and cinematic. You can practically feel the damp air and hear the storm rattling the windows while everyone watches everyone else a little too closely.
The mystery itself was genuinely enjoyable—this is a fun investigation that leans into that classic, “everyone’s trapped, and everyone has a reason” vibe. It felt like a love letter to the style of mysteries where the setting and the suspect list are just as important as the clues.
My only real criticism (and it’s a noticeable one) is that Pérez-Reverte spends a big chunk of the book—maybe 20%—convincing Orman to actually conduct the investigation. I get it thematically: he’s reluctant, he’s jaded, he knows the danger, and he’s tired of being treated like a fictional detective. But it does slow the momentum before the story finally clicks into full “let’s solve this thing” mode.
Still, once it gets moving, it’s exactly the kind of smart, stylish, old-school mystery I love—full of atmosphere, character, and that cozy-but-tense feeling of being stuck in a beautiful place with a very ugly secret.
Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown and Company | Mulholland Books for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.

Tres estrellas.
