Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was a Kenyan author and academic, who was described as East Africa's leading novelist. He began writing in English before later switching to write primarily in Gikuyu, becoming a strong advocate for literature written in native African languages. His works include the celebrated novel The River Between, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He was the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri. His short story The Upright Revolution: Or Why Humans Walk Upright was translated into more than 100 languages. In 1977, Ngũgĩ embarked upon a novel form of theatre in Kenya that sought to liberate the theatrical process from what he held to be "the general bourgeois education system", by encouraging spontaneity and audience participation in the performances. His project sought to "demystify" the theatrical process, and to avoid the "process of alienation [that] produces a gallery of active stars and an undifferentiated mass of grateful admirers" which, according to Ngũgĩ, encourages passivity in "ordinary people". Although his landmark play Ngaahika Ndeenda, co-written with Ngũgĩ wa Mirii, was a commercial success, it was shut down by the authoritarian Kenyan regime six weeks after its opening. Ngũgĩ was subsequently imprisoned for more than a year. Adopted as an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, he was released from prison and fled Kenya. He was appointed Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature and English at the University of California, Irvine. He previously taught at Northwestern University, Yale University, and New York University. Ngũgĩ was frequently regarded as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He won the 2001 International Nonino Prize in Italy, and the 2016 Park Kyong-ni Prize. Among his children are authors Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ and Wanjiku wa Ngũgĩ.
عندما يكون الحب أمام عينك ولا تراه الصراع بين الحرية والعبودية الجهل والتحضر كما أن فكرة المخلص فكرة لا تموت بل عابرة للأزمان العديد من الرؤى التى طرحتها هذه المسرحية كما أن الجو الأفريقى منحها الكثير من الزخم
A quick read that makes us witness the destiny of an undecided man torn between the loads of traditions and the promising lights of modernity brought with the so call independence of his country. Remi as a true patriot wants to abolish tribalism, but does he know the best way to achieve it ? Some may find the language too simple but you got to keep in mind that apart from Remi the Pastor and Omangi, most characters didn't go to school and english is not their mother tongue so it would not have been believable to have them express themselves as scholars.
One of those plays that work on stage I think, not so much on paper due to the dramatization. The script was too direct, which isn't a bad thing perhaps, but I'm a fan of subtlety in literature. Sometimes it was very lyrical, and at other times very political. The characters were too self aware of their inner dilemmas than people irl are. I still do think it's an important topic and should be discussed more, but maybe executed differently.
مسرحية االناسك الأسود، مسرحية للمؤلف الكيني نجيغو وا ثيونجيو ، هي قصة شاب ، ريمي ، الذي هو أول من قبيلته يذهب إلى الجامعة. وسط خلفية دولة مزقتها سياسياً ، فإن ريمي نفسه ممزق بين إحساسه بالقبلية والقومية. يدور هذا الصراع عميقاً ، حيث يجد نفسه في قلب معاناته بينه وبين زواجه وعلاقاته العائلية ، وإحساسه الأكبر بالتزاماته تجاه شعبه والبلد. الطبيعة الكاسحة لهذه المشاكل تدفعه إلى العزلة كالنسك الأسود. دفعه منفاه الذاتي إلى المدينة ليجد إرضاء في جين ، عشيقته الجديدة ، وارتياده ليلا. ومع ذلك ، بعد أن ضغط على العودة إلى القبيلة ، يجب عليه الآن مواجهة شياطين ماضيه
This was a play that was taught to the form 6 students when I taught in Tanzania, and even though it's been almost 15 years since I read it, the line [paraphrased] "your education is not only for you but for all the people" has always sat with me. this play asks what the purpose of education, of experience, of politics and power is -- who is it for?
Pairs nicely with Dilemma of a Ghost but focuses more (better) on duties of the son to the community. Traditional pressure is felt more in this play too, regarding levirate.
When you do not know what you want or what you need ..you follow your foolishness believing that you are something .The main conflict is when one does not know who he is to know which part he belongs to.
Brief, didacticand melodramatic, but poetic and astutely descriptive of the situation of the post-colonial intellectual who does not quite understand how to change the world for the future.
تبدو فكرة نغوغي واضحة، إذ يقدّمها بأسلوب واقعي تنطق فيه الشخصيات بما يريده الكاتب، لكنّ المسرحية تحوي بعداً رمزياً عميقاً، يتمثّل بالصراع بين أطراف القوّة: العصبية العشائرية (شيوخ القبيلة) والدين (رجل الدين) والعادات والتقاليد الموروثة (الأم والزوجة) والمجتمع المدني (الأحزاب). الصراع موجود وحادّ ومتصاعد، والسؤال: كيف ستكون الحريّة، هل هي بوجود كل هذه المكوّنات جميعاً أم بطغيان أحدها وإقصاء البقيّة؟ يبدو هذا الصراع منطقياً جدّاً في الدول أو المجتمعات التي تحصل على حرّيتها حديثاً، فهي لا تعرف ماذا ستبقي وماذا ستمحي! إنها في حالة إرباك تشبه ذلك النسر الجريح الذي كان في الأسر، والآن قد شُفي وحان وقت إطلاقه إلى الحريّة!! الكلام يطول في هذا، لكنّها باختصار فكرة العمل. هروب الزوجة وموتها في النهاية يفتح أسئلة كثيرة... ربّما أجبت نفسي عليها، لكنّ المتعة تبقى في الإجابة الشخصيّة لكلّ منّا. أتمنّى لكم قراءة ممتعة ومفيدة.
