Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.

Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.

Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.

Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

Best birthday gift!
Thank you full-cast audiobook!

Kit Harington was amazing. the Weasleys, Lucius Malfoy. (Sorry I only know Kit by name!)
Loved this one more than the 1st full-cast audiobook. (tho of course half of it is because this one is my favourite in the Middle Grade era)
I just laughed in delight at the good voice acting of the characters. Great work!

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE, NEXT MONTH; having Marauders & all.

you can find my original (emotional! Nostalgic!) review of the book here

The full cast audio of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” was excellent, thanks to the fabulous line up of British actors. The background music and especially the sounds were spectacular.

This production was put together exceedingly well. Just like the first full cast audio, this audio book really delivers. With most movies, so much of the book gets cut out of the film, so it was nice reading/hearing the original again.

Like many people +/- 8 years of my age Harry Potter holds a special place in our hearts and minds.

I'm loving reliving the reading experience with the new Full Cast editions. I will assume that you have not lived under a rock or were raised by wolves and so you know the premise of the story. What is great about these is really the production of them is so well done. The full cast reads like a whose who of talented actors and narrators. I love that there are so many voices that wanted to be a part of this experience. The sound effects are well done but never overtake the story or make me feel like I need to play with the volume.

This is nostalgia for me at its best and it is not disappointing.
- Doby!!! Love him so much.
- Poor Hagrid and his love of unlovable creatures.
- Horrible professor Lockhart - Love his comeuppance
- The Weasley Twins...always a favorite of mine
- Dumbledore...never a better headmaster.

I'm trying hard to make these last...but once you pop you just can't stop.

My Quick Takes:
- 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Genre 📚 Middle Grade Fantasy
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 none
- Content 🤔 themes of death, bullying, discrimination/classism

The full cast 🤩 I don’t know why I’m so surprised that I loved it so much because I absolutely LOVED the full cast of book one.

While book 1 dealt with more “dark magic” themes, book 2 looks more introspectively at the Harry’s peers, and the characters within Hogwarts. Readers get a clearer image of Slytherin and the Malfoy’s, both of which are highly discriminate toward wizards that are not from “pure blood” wizarding families. Lots of real world examples and discussions to be had with parents who are reading these books with their children.

Rereading the book via the full cast audio format truly gives it that child-like wonder quality. Highly recommend for anyone. Just like the first book, it is fully scored with sound effects and each character has their own unique voice. I loved the introduction of Dobby and can’t wait to meet the rest of the cast in the next books!

It’s a 5⭐️ audio production for a 5⭐️ book!

I’m a complete Potterhead.
I first read Harry Potter in middle school and I’ve loved this universe ever since ⚡️

I just finished the full-cast audiobooks of Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets … and bloody hell, they were incredible!

Hearing Cush Jumbo guide us through the story, with Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Snape, Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall, and Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester & Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione (and so many other wonderful actors) - it felt like coming home 🥹
So many details the movies never had time for. So many moments I’d forgotten… and yet, I loved every familiar beat all over again.

And don’t get me wrong - I love the movies. Always will.
But this? This was different. Deeper. Richer. Pure nostalgia.

Now I’m equal parts excited and terrified for the TV series 😅
And I’m waiting with so much anticipation for the next full-cast audiobooks, because I cannot wait to go back to Hogwarts again 🏰✨

I'm always a big fan of full cast audiobooks, but Harry Potter really has surpassed my expectations. The trio remains as amazing as on the first audio, and Kit Harington truly shines as Gilderoy Lockhart. Fully recommend for everyone that loves the series!

Can you hear it?

https://youtu.be/6gN6-vt6Uf8?si=RmxG8... <== only 36 seconds if you cannot hear it

Sounds good, doesn't it?

The Twilite Orchestra, conducted by Addie MS, did a tribute to John Williams in 2016:

https://youtu.be/ao77ZUCQNnY?si=ORYex... <== 5 and a half minutes of Hedwig's Theme. Listen while you read to prepare you for the book.

Audiobook (9 hours and 37 minutes) narrated by a full cast including:
Hugh Laurie
Matthew Macfadyen
Kit Harington
Riz Ahmed
Michelle Gomez
Daniel Mays
Mark Addy
Simon Pegg
Cush Jumbo
Alex Hassell
Gemma Whelan
Indira Varma
Frankie Treadaway
Max Lester
Arabella Stanton

This book has a full narration and is fully scored.
This is a full audio movie of the book and it is awesome!

I was anticipating this one coming. After reading the first one,
(My review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling with more in depth information on the narration and scoring: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)
I had wrongly expected this book to drop the first week of the month, but I was sadly forced to wait until the 17th.

I have previously done a review of the book with Jim Dale's narration, making this the third edition that I have read, the print one before joining goodreads, then Jim Dale's and now this movie version that is just beyond excellent. I enjoyed it even more than the first one.

I have zero complaints and am now awaiting January's release of the Prizoner of Azkaban, which drops the day before my birthday, according to my pre-order receipt. The timing is perfect.

As I stated in my review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this is an audible only audiobook, meaning that in order to enjoy it, you will need to pick it up through audible. Audible books are not available at the library, unfortunately. As an alternative the Jim Dale US narration or the Stephen Fry UK narration, are both just as excellent as ever, as is the print. Any way that you read it, Harry Potter is a great book to settle in and enjoy over and over again.

Happy Reading! ⚡︎

The shape of things to come

Of the seven Harry Potter novels, Chamber of Secrets is my favorite. I remember my surprise the first time I read the series at the change of tone from Philosopher's Stone to Chamber of Secrets. Philosopher's Stone was funny -- in fact, on this re-listen after many years, I was surprised anew at how funny it was. The first time I read it Chamber of Secrets surprised me by its darkness, especially the final major scene, in the titular Chamber of Secrets.

What I now realize, listening after many years to this full-cast audiobook version, is that many of the most critical props and characters for the rest of the series appear for the first time here, in Chamber of Secrets. It is here that we meet Tom Riddle for the first time. I wonder if, when she wrote Philosopher's Stone, J.K. Rowling knew who Voldemort really was. Probably -- she is a meticulous plotter. By the time she wrote Chamber of Secrets, there is no doubt she knew Voldemort well. Here we learn that Harry can talk to snakes. Here we meet Moaning Myrtle. It is here that we encounter our first horcrux, although that word will not enter the series for several novels. The Sword of Gryffindor first enters the story here. And there are smaller things, too. it is in Chamber of Secrets that we first learn of polyjuice potion.

Unusually, we catch Hermione in some serious errors here, a thing that almost never happens later. She appears at first to be completely taken in by Glideroy Lockhart. And she also messes up her polyjuice potion, turning herself into a catgirl instead of Millicent Bulstrode.

Although it is overall much grimmer than Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets does have its funny parts. These are concentrated mostly in Mr Stolen Valor himself -- the odious Gilderoy Lockhart -- voiced with enthusiasm and apparent delight in the full-cast edition by Jon Snow Kit Harington. Lockhart vanishes from the series here, except for a brief cameo in a later novel.

The grim tone of Chamber of Secrets is also a harbinger. From here on the novels become more and more grim. They also soon become heavier, literally. Novel 3 Prisoner of Azkaban is still of a reasonable length for a Young Adult novel, but novel 4, Goblet of Fire, is massive, as are most of them from that point.

I complained in my review of Philosopher's Stone that the sound effects were overdone, to the point of distracting from the story. Whether the producers dialed that back a bit or I have just become more used to them, I did not find them so obtrusive in Chamber of Secrets. There were long stretches when the narrative was unburdened by sound effects no one needed.

Putting it all together: the best of the Harry Potter novels, in full-cast with a great performance by Kit Harington -- this was a delight.

Probably my least favourite HP book of the series so not 5 stars for that reason. I forgot so many little details so I enjoyed remembering them. The full cast audio is amazing - Dobby sounds just like he should!

I was so nervous about these editions. The actual audio books are absolutely unreal by Jim Dale, so the bar was set so high. The little background noises and the use of some of the actors that are going to participate in the HBO series has been nothing but fantastic.

4.5 stars! 10 stars for the story!
Still not completely satisfied with some of the voice actors.
Draco and Snape are my two biggest complaints. Draco’s annoying laugh just doesn’t fit the character. And Snape is so off. He isn’t nearly as dark, mean and brooding as his description is.
Petunia isn’t in this book much other than the very beginning but her voice is terrible. She basically screams each time she talks.
I love the main narrator and the 3 main characters. Dumbledore has an amazing voice as well.
Chamber of secrets is one of my favorite books in the series. I’ll never get sick of reading or listening to any of the HP books.
I enjoyed this new audio version. I’m really trying not to compare this to the Jim Dale narration or the movie actors but sometimes it’s tricky.
Looking forward to the next one!

Much like its predecessor, the full-cast recording of The Chamber of Secrets is well-acted and produced. There are still a few casting/directing decisions I find questionable, mainly that Dumbledore sounds too young and Snape doesn't capture enough of that sniveling menace attributed to him in the books--in other words, he sounds too normal--but these are relatively small complaints compared to the total package. If anything, the biggest drawback to listening to these audiobooks is realizing that the first two books in the series are much less engaging to me now that I'm an adult. I suppose that's only to be expected, but hopefully my enjoyment of the series will grow with future installments, as the story matures alongside the characters.

The full cast audiobook continues to be such a treat! The content of the book is 5 ⭐️ as expected, but it's so interesting reading this as an adult and picking up on all the little nuances that went over my head as a kid. Specifically, the politics at the ministry with the Muggle Protection Act and how that influenced Lucius' choice of 'host' (iykyk).

Kit Harrington voiced Lockhart and honestly, give this man a reward. I'll never hear Lockhart as anyone else.

I HIGHLY recommend checking these out.

Another amazing audiobook experience.

I’m still not quite used to Severus Snape’s voice, but I’m hoping it will grow on me with time. On the other hand, Aragog’s voice was absolutely terrifying. Philip Arditti did an impeccable job bringing that character to life.

The sound effects really shone in this installment. The added audio design enhanced the tension throughout the story, and the eeriness of the basilisk was especially amplified by the sound effects. It made several scenes genuinely unsettling in the best way.

Overall, this was a very immersive and enjoyable listen.

The sound effects are magical. It is truly such an immersive and unique book reading experience. I am loving every moment more than I could’ve ever imagined. I cannot wait for the next book to come out!!Listening to these will be the highlight of every month I can already tell! 🥳

Christmas return road trip car audio. Good fun to revisit with the husband and kids. I still think the Snape voice actor was seriously miscast. He sounds adolescent and whiny.
