Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.

Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.

Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.

Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

Best birthday gift!
Thank you full-cast audiobook!

Kit Harington was amazing. the Weasleys, Lucius Malfoy. (Sorry I only know Kit by name!)
Loved this one more than the 1st full-cast audiobook. (tho of course half of it is because this one is my favourite in the Middle Grade era)
I just laughed in delight at the good voice acting of the characters. Great work!

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE, NEXT MONTH; having Marauders & all.

you can find my original (emotional! Nostalgic!) review of the book here

My Quick Takes:
- 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Genre 📚 Middle Grade Fantasy
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️‍🔥 none
- Content 🤔 themes of death, bullying, discrimination/classism

The full cast 🤩 I don’t know why I’m so surprised that I loved it so much because I absolutely LOVED the full cast of book one.

While book 1 dealt with more “dark magic” themes, book 2 looks more introspectively at the Harry’s peers, and the characters within Hogwarts. Readers get a clearer image of Slytherin and the Malfoy’s, both of which are highly discriminate toward wizards that are not from “pure blood” wizarding families. Lots of real world examples and discussions to be had with parents who are reading these books with their children.

Rereading the book via the full cast audio format truly gives it that child-like wonder quality. Highly recommend for anyone. Just like the first book, it is fully scored with sound effects and each character has their own unique voice. I loved the introduction of Dobby and can’t wait to meet the rest of the cast in the next books!

It’s a 5⭐️ audio production for a 5⭐️ book!

Can you hear it?

https://youtu.be/6gN6-vt6Uf8?si=RmxG8... <== only 36 seconds if you cannot hear it

Sounds good, doesn't it?

The Twilite Orchestra, conducted by Addie MS, did a tribute to John Williams in 2016:

https://youtu.be/ao77ZUCQNnY?si=ORYex... <== 5 and a half minutes of Hedwig's Theme. Listen while you read to prepare you for the book.

Audiobook (9 hours and 37 minutes) narrated by a full cast including:
Hugh Laurie
Matthew Macfadyen
Kit Harington
Riz Ahmed
Michelle Gomez
Daniel Mays
Mark Addy
Simon Pegg
Cush Jumbo
Alex Hassell
Gemma Whelan
Indira Varma
Frankie Treadaway
Max Lester
Arabella Stanton

This book has a full narration and is fully scored.
This is a full audio movie of the book and it is awesome!

I was anticipating this one coming. After reading the first one,
(My review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling with more in depth information on the narration and scoring: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)
I had wrongly expected this book to drop the first week of the month, but I was sadly forced to wait until the 17th.

I have previously done a review of the book with Jim Dale's narration, making this the third edition that I have read, the print one before joining goodreads, then Jim Dale's and now this movie version that is just beyond excellent. I enjoyed it even more than the first one.

I have zero complaints and am now awaiting January's release of the Prizoner of Azkaban, which drops the day before my birthday, according to my pre-order receipt. The timing is perfect.

As I stated in my review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this is an audible only audiobook, meaning that in order to enjoy it, you will need to pick it up through audible. Audible books are not available at the library, unfortunately. As an alternative the Jim Dale US narration or the Stephen Fry UK narration, are both just as excellent as ever, as is the print. Any way that you read it, Harry Potter is a great book to settle in and enjoy over and over again.

Happy Reading! ⚡︎

I'm always a big fan of full cast audiobooks, but Harry Potter really has surpassed my expectations. The trio remains as amazing as on the first audio, and Kit Harington truly shines as Gilderoy Lockhart. Fully recommend for everyone that loves the series!

Probably my least favourite HP book of the series so not 5 stars for that reason. I forgot so many little details so I enjoyed remembering them. The full cast audio is amazing - Dobby sounds just like he should!

4.5 stars! 10 stars for the story!
Still not completely satisfied with some of the voice actors.
Draco and Snape are my two biggest complaints. Draco’s annoying laugh just doesn’t fit the character. And Snape is so off. He isn’t nearly as dark, mean and brooding as his description is.
Petunia isn’t in this book much other than the very beginning but her voice is terrible. She basically screams each time she talks.
I love the main narrator and the 3 main characters. Dumbledore has an amazing voice as well.
Chamber of secrets is one of my favorite books in the series. I’ll never get sick of reading or listening to any of the HP books.
I enjoyed this new audio version. I’m really trying not to compare this to the Jim Dale narration or the movie actors but sometimes it’s tricky.
Looking forward to the next one!

Much like its predecessor, the full-cast recording of The Chamber of Secrets is well-acted and produced. There are still a few casting/directing decisions I find questionable, mainly that Dumbledore sounds too young and Snape doesn't capture enough of that sniveling menace attributed to him in the books--in other words, he sounds too normal--but these are relatively small complaints compared to the total package. If anything, the biggest drawback to listening to these audiobooks is realizing that the first two books in the series are much less engaging to me now that I'm an adult. I suppose that's only to be expected, but hopefully my enjoyment of the series will grow with future installments, as the story matures alongside the characters.

The full cast audiobook continues to be such a treat! The content of the book is 5 ⭐️ as expected, but it's so interesting reading this as an adult and picking up on all the little nuances that went over my head as a kid. Specifically, the politics at the ministry with the Muggle Protection Act and how that influenced Lucius' choice of 'host' (iykyk).

Kit Harrington voiced Lockhart and honestly, give this man a reward. I'll never hear Lockhart as anyone else.

I HIGHLY recommend checking these out.

Another amazing audiobook experience.

I’m still not quite used to Severus Snape’s voice, but I’m hoping it will grow on me with time. On the other hand, Aragog’s voice was absolutely terrifying. Philip Arditti did an impeccable job bringing that character to life.

The sound effects really shone in this installment. The added audio design enhanced the tension throughout the story, and the eeriness of the basilisk was especially amplified by the sound effects. It made several scenes genuinely unsettling in the best way.

Overall, this was a very immersive and enjoyable listen.

Christmas return road trip car audio. Good fun to revisit with the husband and kids. I still think the Snape voice actor was seriously miscast. He sounds adolescent and whiny.

Best voice work in this one were Peeves and Lockhart hands down. Filch was excellent and Dobby was good. Hugh Laurie voices Dumbledore and does a great job.

I’m pretty whatever on Harry and Ron, while Hermione is good. I’m looking forward to books 4-7 when they bring in older voice actors.

Snape’s voice is the most disappointing by far.

Looking forward to hearing Lupin and Sirius in book 3. All in all, it’s amazing what they’ve done with these. I’m glad to be done with the first two books as they’re not nearly as interesting as the rest.

Having grown up with these books, it’s impossible not to smile as I rediscover every forgotten detail, notice every hint of what’s still to come, and let myself be drawn back into a world that has stayed with me forever. While I reject the person, I applaud the author who shaped each story for the right age, adding — book after book — new layers, depth, myth, and a framework for so much fantasy — and reality — that my generation has continued to revisit.

The new audiobook edition, featuring the delightful surprise of Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart (!), elevates the magic even further, immersing the listener in one of the most beautiful Harry Potter experiences. A truly special way to start 2026.

I will never not be slightly unhinged about the fact that this is technically a children’s book. Because excuse me? Basilisk whispers in the walls, students getting petrified like cursed lawn ornaments, and a bloody message smeared across stone walls? Sure, Jan. Totally bedtime-story material.

Now. This full-cast edition? Absolute witchcraft. Pure audio sorcery. The performances are so vivid they practically claw their way into your skull. The sound effects had me freezing mid-task like I was the one about to be petrified. Chapter 17 in particular? Straight to goosebumps. I had to pause and just… sit there. Breathing. Respectfully afraid.

Percy sounding like Stewie Griffin on 2x speed took me out every single time, though. I love him. I fear him. I laughed far too hard.

What really got me, though, is how much darker this book feels on a reread. The themes of prejudice, legacy and inherited evil hit harder when you’re older. Tom Riddle is chilling. Harry’s doubts feel heavier. The stakes feel real.

An absolute masterpiece, elevated to a whole new level by the full-cast treatment.

So happy to see the improvements over the first book writing wise, there's still a few over uses of certain words, snigger and sneer , but the flow all together is quite nice and alot of the enjoyment comes from more than just nostalgia, honestly even though I knew the reveal I still like the mystery it builds, I enjoy the concept of the diary and Tim riddle, honestly my biggest complaint as an adult rereading this is I would have wanted more, I wanted to know more about tom riddle more about the chamber of secrets being opened the first time, all in all though super enjoyable.
Full cast specific comments.
Again just an amazing recording, this time we are joined by kit Harington (job Snow himself) as gildaroy Lockhart, and oh boy he does an extremely good job, the only problem is I hate gildaroy Lockhart 😂.
The actor playing tom riddle is fabulous and special shout out to the kid playing Ron, dude nails it .
This is also the first version of this story that genuinely made me care about Colin, he comes across as just this really sincear fan boy, and I really prefered this interpretation over him just being hyper annoying.
Another high recommend

5 star production, 2.5-3 stars for the text within the context of the rest of the series. it's just not the strongest book of the series imo and the rare occasion I actually prefer the film over the book.

I can't unsee that the author writes from a place of such bigotry and scarcity of kindness :( relying heavily on physical archetypes to solicit sympathy or suspicion towards certain characters. Like, I wouldn't read this indiscriminately to my hypothetical kid lol the filler descriptors and in-between lines really didn't age well! it's both really nostalgic and also difficult to fully enjoy revisiting the series for the first time since adolescence.

The new cast audiobook is still exceptional and genuinely shocking in the gravity of the introduction of a certain blood quantum slur. You can feel the series really start to darken, the stakes heighten. The highlight of this book's cast are the introduction of almost all the adored Weasleys. my favorite character in this book is Ron! Scottish Oliver Wood is still my GOAT and I'm sorry but Lucius Malfoy is still one of my fav c*nty characters in the series 💀 very nostalgic, onto the next

Once again - the full cast audio is such a treat! Amazing production & the voice actors are fabulous.

This book was fun because it begins to set more of the stage for the political background - you get introduced to the ministry of magic, Azkaban prison and learn more about the viewpoints of the dark wizards and their opinions on the muggle born.

Arthur Weasley had a quote that stuck with me in the book & has aged miraculously well... "Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain."

SO excited for the next audiobook to be released next week!

A More Confident Second Installment

Chamber of Secrets was even better than the first one, and I really enjoyed it overall. The story, pacing, and performances felt stronger and more confident this time around.

The only area I wish had been better was Lucius and Draco. Their performances sounded a bit fake and unauthentic to me, and Draco’s laugh in particular was quite off-putting. Tom Riddle’s laugh also felt strange at times. Despite that, it was still a very enjoyable listen.

Honestly, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Sorcerer’s Stone Full Cast audiobook- the sound balance seemed off (possibly from listening primarily in my car). However, this was excellent. The background sounds added so much. I got literal chills listening to the music as Fawkes arrived in the Chamber of Secrets and all I want to do now is attend the feast celebrating the revival of all the victims and closing of the Chamber of Secrets.
