-Graphic novel NON-fiction is one of my favorite genres! One reason is because I'd really like to read more history/biographies but I get utterly bored with the usually flat, academic narrative. Of course, not all non-fiction is so dry- written, there are some great non-fiction books out there, but then again, I love graphic novels and comic books, so I'd definitely go for the book with the pictures!:) One other thing is I love history of art...sooo a graphic biography of Rembrandt? Yes, please!
-About the story alone, to be honest, before this book I haven't read anything about Rembrandt - I may have seen a documentary or two but that's it- no knowledge whatsoever about his personality etc. So, I don't know if this book is super-precise concerning historical events or Rembrandt's reactions and general attitude (although, I've read that Typex took almost 3 years to complete this graphic-biography so I assume that the research done for this make it accurate enough for me + I thing that it was also made in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, so, yeah...). -Most of the chapters of the book are inspired by or narrated from the point of view of someone in Rembrandt's life; his wife, mistresses, son, fellow artists etc. So each time we get a glimpse of the famous painter, until the end of the book where all parts conjoined give as a complete picture of his life and character.
-The art was one of the things that made this a particularly exciting read. Typex's art style is very unique and unlike anything I've seen in other comic/graphic novels. I can see how the art could be considered strange with the bizarre, almost comical postures and -in times- the even grotesque expressions but all these were what made it so interesting and pleasing at the same time. There was charm and flow in the way everything was drawn and what I loved most was the compositioning! There were many brilliant ways in which Typex chose to narrate this story; the paneling, the interesting angles and details made it very intriguing indeed! One other thing that I liked was the colouring -It was all done with a muddy, earthly-toned palette, similar to that of Rembrandt's paintings!
-All in all, a wonderful, unique and inspiring read that I'd recommend to anyone who loves art in general!
I tried really hard. I even read it in Amsterdam and bought a copy (at horrible expense) from the wonderful Lambiek comic shop. But somehow this just failed to move me. Maybe because the storytelling and art (which is lovely) is just too literal. Maybe the disjointed narrative. Maybe the over expressive cartoony characters. it is a shame because it could have been AMAZING and I think I am being harsh on it because it just didn't meet up to that potential.
A wonderful - though not too flattering - portrait of the Dutch master painter Rembrandt van Rijn. The book is made up of fragments from Rembrandt's life, mostly chronological. I recommend to read something of his biography, and that of Saskia, Geertje and Hendrickje on Wikipedia or somewhere else alongside of reading this grapic novel, to fully grasp what's going on in this book. Historically it seems very accurate, and it's amazing how Typex managed to recreate Rembrandts masterworks in his own style.
This is a beautifully bound edition with a short making of and an extra story.
The art is great, very evocative of Rembrandt’s own style. I’ll admit I don’t necessarily see Rembrandt’s life (at least as it’s portrayed here) as being compelling on its own as the topic of a book like this.
A very gorgeous book, the art is beautiful and really pulls you into each page. A wonderful, if brief, look into the life of one of the world’s greatest artists.
Unstinting portrait of the artist with jowls, pinched nose, a perpetual “sourpuss” acting like a perfect ass to every woman who loved him, to his son and daughter, and even to himself, as he threw away chances at wealth or status like so much rotten herring.
The work was a Riksmuseum commission, and thus a small investment that paid off huge dividends. All archival source types are meticulously woven in, like sketches and studies, prints, handwriting, ephemera long lost but mentioned in the catalogue of Rembrandt’s possessions in the wake of his bankruptcy (“incomplete skeleton that seems to be of a whale “) .
Beautifully illustrated, depending on your definition of beauty. Typex tries to create a style that mirrors the colors, textures and period details of Rembrandt's life and generation. Each frame is packed with imagination and finely drawn details. Where the book failed, for me, was the storytelling. I didn't learn much about Rembrandt's life, and most importantly, Rembrandt comes across as an arrogant jerk, one of those bitter 'all these fools just can't understand me' type artists. From what I've read elsewhere about Rembrandt's life, he was far more complex, in many ways a great person - a family man who loved and lost his wife Saskia and all but one of his children, and someone with a great sense of humor (as evidenced by his funny self-portraits) and humanity and empathy. He was also capable of cruelty in a few instances. The Rembrandt presented here, however, feels like the 'great, misunderstood genius' trope often applied to other artists, such as Van Gogh.
The graphic novel narrates part of Rembrandt’s life. It’s not actually bad . I like the style of drawing. Considering how many pages long this is, I would say he has done a great job depicting the life of the artist in his own style and choosing the artist’s color pallete to be added to the artwork of the graphic novel . These little details make it a worth reading graphic novel .
Credit where credit is due; the art of this novel is extensive and fairly well done. I’m not the biggest fan of it, but it does lend to a mock-Rembrandt style which I personally could never render.
I take issue with the storytelling as a lot of people do, it seems. The story is a little hard to follow because it jumps so often and doesn’t truly introduce characters/people. Sometimes they go on for pages not translating Italian and other times they slip in modernizations like calling someone a “dickhead” - both were annoying to read.
I had to read a general synopsis (online) of Rembrandt’s life to piece together what the novel was trying to say. I’m still not 100% sure if Rembrandt ever smiled or loved any of the women in his life and I am also unsure which woman was a maid and which was a wife- Which sounds unimportant, but wasn’t given it was the 1600s.
Overall I can tell that Rembrandts life was difficult, but I’m not sure I could tell another person the whys in a very specific manner after reading this. Bummer.
This book didn't engage me as much as I hoped. Some of the frames/scenes were difficult for me to decipher and left me wondering what I am supposed to pick up as the reader. Despite having a wealth of art history knowledge, I am not the most versed in Rembrandt's work. Probably my favorite part of this book was looking up the chapter title and seeing Rembrandt's piece of work and then how Typex recreated Rembrandt's work. If you do know the references to this art master's painting or sketches I think that would add an additional exciting element to this book. I did think that it was neat the Rijksmuseum helped to sponsor/support Typex in creating this piece.
Nice book, really good art. The story didn’t stand out a whole bunch. Initially I was worried it would be a more egregious attempt to paint a national hero with a grimy edgy brush, but Typex definitely didn’t make it gratuitous and it felt more honest for it. In terms of storytelling it was less impactful than it could have been. It’s told by chapters basically about who died in that period in Rembrandt’s life, but you only become vaguely aware of that towards the end, and Typex never actually develops it into a full-blown theme. The book remains just kind of a more or less chronological depiction of Rembrandts life.
breathtaking art style that refernces Rembrandt's own Chiaroscuro and sepia colouring. With the narrative limiting itself to the second half of Rembrandt's life, this had an incredibly melancholic vibe. The Artist, as typex depicts him, was Pretty horrible to be around, so watching his relationships and family bonds slowly break up because of it was sad. And the ending! Man, it was poetic, but reeeally sad :D Interesting read, crazy expensive though (gilded edges and all), so maybe one for the library?! ^^
A graphic biography of the great master, Rembrandt van Rijn with details that are a little fuzzy. This book covers his painting career, love, and family life. Rembrandt was popular in his day but managed his money and fame poorly. He was cantankerous and perhaps a bit of an ass. His work endures, however and he is considered one of the great masters. More interesting is the way the art reveals something about Rembrandt's own style. I think the pictures here are more important than the story.
I was immediately attracted by the cover and the fact that it was a drawn biography, unfortunately absolutely nothing pleased me, neither the story or the graphic style. I struggled to finish, actually.
This isn't a biography, It doesn't flatter anyone and isn't really trying to emulate Rembrandt's style. It is based on the scant facts we have of the painter's life with a lot of embellishment. And it works brilliantly on it's own terms.
What a sad life Rembrant lived. He’s considered a timeless genius in the field of fine art, yet he seem to lived poorly as he spent his money carelessly. The feel sorry for the women who loved him, he was too conceited to think about their well-being before his art.
Typex is just amazing - I think the comic captures really well the atmosphere of this particular age, and the various aspects of Rembrandt life. I will be definitely returning to it to read it more times to dive more into this great piece of art.
