The dead cat lived and the dead wife haunted her. Was there a connection between the two? Kendra had to know! True, she was merely the governess in Alexander Maitland's house. True, she had very little power and still less respect. But the love of a small crippled child was at stake...and so was Kendra's very life -- Was she strong enough to fight the unseen fiery forces, forces whose strength Kendra could merely guess at? Did they have something to do with the chalked circle? And could there have been devilish doings there? If Kendra solved her mystery, she might win the love of Alexander Maitland and a new life. If she failed, there might be no life at all.
Bad. Really, really bad. Flat characters, lobotomized dialogue, nonsensical + boring plot. I thought there was no way it could be worse than THE SATAN STONE, but surprise! Somehow it managed to top even that lolzy snorefest.
Also, a moment of silence for poor kitty Mr Tom, who had to die so this schlock could lumber across the finish line. 🐱 Mr Tom, you & Meadows deserved better fates. And better books. 🙄
I feel like I should come up with a new rating system for gothics. A 4 star gothic is a 3 star anything else. I'm super forgiving. This book followed the formula for a gothic perfectly. The romance was not believable, but it rarely is. I read it in two afternoons.
This is the first gothic I can recall reading set in Canada, which is interesting.
I loved this book when I was 12, and I can see why. The author totally ripped off Jane Eyre and Rebecca and it's written at about 12 year old's reading level. Still, it was enjoyable to revisit it on a cold, Janurary evening in 2009.
