For the most part, I really did enjoy Catharina and the story being told. The Gaelic words were so beautiful and sprinkled throughout. Though I wish there was a pronunciation guide in the beginning. I had to keep bothering my husband to help me with pronunciation. The Celtic mythology developed, and the world built was amazing! Bravo on mixing it well within this fantasy story. As much as I enjoyed some aspects, there were parts that gave me pause. It is mostly to do with the insta lovey connection and some of the plot points. Aed and Catharina's connection being so instant caused the development of their relationship to feel forced and gross. It didn't work for me in the slightest. Love their characters separately but not together. I wish there would have been an enemies to lovers connection versus insta love. Because of that, the spice scenes weren't that great. Dont get me wrong, they were hot asf, but it didn't work with the characters. Still, there are so many moments I did like, so I can't reject this book completely. The side characters stole the show and their voices shined---gross ones included. I am definitely interested in seeing where the second book will go, so I will keep an eye out for it.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and loved that the FMC is the morally grey character.

I loved bringing the Celtic mythology into the storyline and the use of Gaelic too. Although I would have preferred to have the pronunciation guide up front.

I wasn’t so fond of the instant ‘love’ that happens between the main characters. It’s overtly sexualised with little substance which made much of the motivations seem a bit lacking.

The side characters stood out for me and I’d like to see them developed more in future books.

Overall an enjoyable easy read. Thank you to Book Sirens for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance. All views are my own.

My review part one:
It’s been a great pleasure to read an Arc copy of Jane Langan’s ‘The Impossible Queen’ prior to publication. Jane’s magical world building is coupled with a healthy dose of hot spice 🔥🔥🔥 and this is the faerytale redefined, a fascinating blend of dark fantasy and the fantasy sub-genre of romantasy, which is based on Irish Celtic folklore! There are trigger warnings in place for strong themes and explicit detail, though it’s an addictive read, perfect for dark autumn nights with candles lit and a good glass of red to hand.

From the back cover:
“Queen Catharina’s reign is forged in fire and fuelled by a thirteen year old wound.

Since the Fae killed her parents, rage has been her closest confidante. Now, ruling the human realm of Conbairn with an iron fist, she’s sworn to eradicate every last Fae survivor of The Great Conquest.

But Catharina’s hold on power is as tenuous as the whispers that follow her uncle, Laurie Kyngsman, through the Iron Castle’s shadowy halls. Fear, violence, and secrets are his currency, and her throne is his prize.

When the Fae Prince Aed falls into her hands, Catharina faces a choice that could define her reign: deliver the final blow or play a dangerous game with the last of her enemies.”

My review part two:
The alternating first-person perspectives of: Aed (Fae Prince of Shadows), Catharina (Human Queen who evolves into a Fae Princess), and Descath (Fae King of Darkness), carry the narrative through a heady blend of: cruelty, tragedy, violence, intense sexual desire, beauty, nature, strength, weakness, and some great humour. Jane’s focus on darkness really emphasises her play on the faerytale.

Fae Prince Aed, is a beautiful being with intricate tattoos defining a muscular body, long flowing hair, and retractable wings that blend into shadows. The novel opens with his internalised narrative as he suffers while temporarily captive at the mercy of Catharina. It’s explicit with a hint of humour that lightens it at intervals, and engages the reader from the start.

Catharina’s initial point of view projects her as a cruel soul, hellbent on revenge for Aed’s slaying of her parents thirteen years previously. She’s leather clad and sassy with a beautiful mane of dark hair, yet evil (at least that’s how she comes across at the start of the narrative, but it’s fascinating to watch her evolve), and erotically charged. Her ongoing transformation into a Fae Princess while she’s rebelliously in denial about it, has kept me invested in her as a morally grey main female character. How will she reconcile being Fae with her background as a human Queen?

Fae King Descath is Aed’s mysterious cousin and of similar appearance, which ultimately makes him irresistible to Catharina. His character is perhaps best introduced via his own words: ‘My cousin is full of light and love… I, on the other hand, exist for the darkness, where the blackness curls and consumes me, obliterating all that is good. It makes me. Fills me. It is the power of night, the obscure and the obscene.’ I’ve considered him to be an antagonist initially, but he is also set to evolve. He and Aed become Catharina’s lovers, and their three way relationship is both intense and inevitable in the context of the novel.

‘The Impossible Queen’ is rich with beautiful imagery emphasising the fantasy world that Jane has created, alongside memorable characters who project magic in many forms from the page. It’s great to know that this is book one of a series, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing what comes next!

As a lover of all things fae, warriors, gods, and goddesses, The Impossible Queen by JM Langan was an absolute treat. This story is rich with fantasy, lore and deeply rooted in ancient mythology. Langan‘s use of Ogham, the ancient Celtic writing system, adds a beautifully authentic twist to the magic system; an element that showcases the author’s impressive research and attention to detail. The result is a world that feels both vibrant and meticulously crafted, making this novel a true page-turner.

At its heart, this is a story about a fierce and compelling FMC on a journey of self discovery and healing from lifelong trauma. Her path is filled with emotional growth, learning to regulate her feelings, trusting a found family, opening herself to love, and embracing the weight of a destiny she never expected. Watching her uncover her identity and the responsibilities tied to it is both moving and exhilarating.

The supporting cast is just as captivating. Each character is distinct, with personal arcs that draw you in and keep you invested. The action is intense, the mythology immersive, and yes…. there’s spice that will have you gripping the book with a racing heartbeat.

And that ending? A major cliffhanger that guarantees I’ll be grabbing the next installment the moment it releases.

Highly recommended for fantasy and adventure, lovers seeking rich lore, emotional depth, and a story that lingers long after the final page.

From the very first page, this book had me hooked and it never once let go. The writing is immersive, the worldbuilding is rich, and the story unfolds with a perfect balance of magic, intrigue, and heart. What I loved most were the twists and turns scattered throughout—just when I thought I had the plot figured out, it would shift in a way that left me wide-eyed and eager to keep reading.

Every part of the book carried its own surprises, making it impossible to put down. The pacing is spot-on, the characters are layered and compelling, and the reveals are masterfully done. If you’re looking for a fantasy that grips you from start to finish and keeps you guessing in the best way possible, this is it.

So ready for book 2!!!

This book in one sentence: “An intriguing fantasy rollercoaster with surprising twists and turns”.

I loved the Celtic theme, with the Gaelic language ( maybe an alphabet as a guide could be a plus), the characters are neatly worked out.

Thanks to the author’s great gift with words, I envisioned a wonderful fantasy world and I could easily loose myself in it.

After reading this first part of this series, I’m wondering how this story will continue. Many thoughts have crossed my mind and I hope that all the characters ( not only the main characters) will get a good part in the sequels. This story has so much potential to make this a great series.

Can’t wait for part 2! 🤩

I really enjoyed this one! The Impossible Queen has a stubborn, strong, complicated, and flawed FMC that you'll want to root for, even when she makes bad decisions.
If you like fantasy with complex characters, a morally gray FMC, and a dark edge with some really good spice, this is worth reading.
I also loved the Celtic touches woven into the story. This is a good start to the series and I can't wait to see what happens next!

The Impossible Queen isn’t just a fantasy—it’s a slow unraveling of strength, sacrifice, and self-discovery. J.M. Langan gives us a heroine who isn’t born a queen—she becomes one, bruised and brilliant through every betrayal and battle. The writing is sharp, poetic, and raw enough to make you feel every ounce of her struggle.

It’s not just a story about ruling—it’s about surviving in a world that tells you you’re not enough, and then proving that you are everything. The world-building is lush, the romance quietly burns, and the emotional tension lingers long after you turn the last page.

If you love morally gray rulers, forbidden desires, and heroines who rise even when it breaks them—this book will stay with you.

Thank you for the ARC - ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 from me.

The world-building in this book is fantastic. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the magic elemental systems and the different kingdoms. As well as the politics at play.

The problem started for me in the middle. The pacing felt like it had slowed quite a lot, I also struggled to connect with the main character. Sometimes her decisions didn't make a lot of sense, and I found myself getting frustrated with her.

It's not a bad book by any means, and I'd still recommend it if you're a big dark fantasy fan.

Although I will say that I am genuinely looking forward to book two and seeing how the story will play out.

I really enjoyed this book’s Celtic mythology and the morally grey main character. The use of Gaelic added a nice touch, though a pronunciation guide would’ve helped! The romance felt a bit rushed and too focused on attraction, but the side characters were great and added depth. Overall, a fun and engaging read.

Thank you for sending me an ARC! I’m going to DNF this one for now. It’s fast-paced with some really solid world-building—it’s just not my cup of tea at the moment. Definitely check the TWs before diving in. If you love stories with female rage turned into power and dark romantasy vibes, this might be right up your alley!

4.5 stars.

I’m so glad this is a book 1 and there is more to come in the series.

The world building is enough to create the beautiful image in your mind. It isn’t too complex, just the right amount. The characters are fantastic. Strong FMC who is only to become stronger and not one but 2 strong MMC…it’s the perfect harem.
There is a good mix of good and evil within the characters.
The past histories of a couple of the MC made me feel sad for them. The book provokes many emotions both sad and happy .

🌶️🌶️🌶️ for the spice level , saying no more 🤭

The book is fast paced through out, always wanting you to keep reading. Vengeance is coming and I’m looking forward to it.
Wishing I’d have seen the glossary pre read as I knew I was mispronouncing the names as I read. Hence my half star deduction.

Definitely worth being added to your TBR

I was invested in Queen Catharina and her world, it had that element that I was expecting from the description. I was engaged with how the world and reign had developed. I enjoyed this as a opening chapter in the Queen of Conbairn series, it was everything that I was looking for and was glad it had that element that I was hoping for. All of the characters were so well written and had that fantasy romance concept that I was looking for. JM Langan has a strong writing style and left me wanting to read more in the world of Queen of Conbairn.

ARC received from BookSirens. Thank you! This was so much better than expected. I was actually a little leerie because the beginning felt cringy to me. But as the story and characters developed, I became completely invested. Strong FMC….great, fun side characters. Looking forward to book 2. #booksirens.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 - erotically charged level

I am voluntarily leaving this review, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to J.M Langan and BookSirens for an early ARC copy. These themes and troupes to enjoy:-

🧚‍♀️Fantasy Romance
⚔️Enemies to Lovers
🧚‍♀️Feminine Rage
⚔️Fated Mates
🧚‍♀️Magical Elements
⚔️Why Choose Romance

"The Impossible Queen" is an absolute joy!! the world-building is fantastic, and the author delves into the magical elements, different kingdoms whilst twisting all the politics together. Catharina is a force, she is seeking revenge on those who killed her parents -- enter Prince Aed, he is broody and despite his feelings towards his "Queen" there is a softness to his character.

If you are a fan of ACOTAR or Fourth Wing, then this dark romantasy is the book for you. This story is one of strength, sacrifice and female-rage I love the witty banter between all the characters especially Fergal he is brutal, strong and gives golden-retriever vibes. It's a fun time and you won't be disappointed. The biggest character development and progression is with the Queen herself, Catharina’s story initial tells the reader that she is unrelenting, full of hate & darkness and seeks revenge on those who her hurt. Fae Prince of Shadows is her captive, she takes great delight in torturing him for fun and amusement. I love how the author explored our FMC’s sexuality and desires, she is erotically charged and evil – it is a delicious mix. The ‘Impossible Queen’ is fast-paced but starts to slow halfway; we are introduced to the Fae King of Darkness – in his own words he sums up his introduction beautifully “my cousin is full of light and love… I, on the other hand, exist for the darkness, where the blackness curls and consumes me, obliterating all that is good. It makes me. Fills me. It is the power of night, the obscure and the obscene.”

Catharina is rebellious and I was invested in her transformation from the first page, despite her denial of becoming the Fae Princess, it posed the question of “How will she reconcile with the creatures she spent all her life hellbent on destroying?” She is one of the strongest, morally grey characters I have had the pleasure of reading, and I can’t wait to see how her relationships continue and the intensity throughout the next book.

The Impossible Queen.

This is the third book by J M Langan that I have read and my favourite so far though I have never read dark fantasy fiction before. I was fortunate to have received an ARC and before I had even read one word I could see that this was quality from the care taken with the book design -an illustration on the first page of each chapter and the chosen typeface.

As I said this was my first foray into this genre and I was a little unsure as to whether I would be able to immerse myself in it but how wrong I was.How the author can conjure up such a complex but believable history of a fantasy world is beyond me and I was continually surprised by the clever twists and turns in the narrative which quickly had me hooked.

Weaving Gaelic mythology and words into the story almost made the world more believable and although I have seen some comments about wanting pronunciations at the front of the book I did not feel the need to know how to say them. In fact I think that would take me out of the story. I was happy to skim over the names and simply recognise them rather than say them in my head ( if that makes sense)

This is a spicy read and I was particularly impressed with the writer's talent when describing these scenes - no clumsy names or immediate orgasms.

Others have mentioned the attraction between the main protagonists blossomed a little too quickly but personally I think immediate attraction has no logic - especially with the fae I imagine ;) - and I enjoyed the friction (no pun intended ) between the lovers.

I was so impressed with the skill of the storytelling and the language used that I found myself worrying that the author would not be able to sustain it throughout the book but I realised I had no need to be concerned on that score. And the end had such a fabulous twist that I am itching to read the next in the series.

A well deserved 5 stars J M Langan!

Thank you to the author and to BookSirens for the ARC.

I feel like I’ve been mis-sold this book from the premise. The morally grey evil queen exists for maybe three chapters at the start and then vanishes behind a spoilt petulant child who needs a strong man to save her and sees no consequences for her actions.

Her harem consists of prisoners of war and this is deemed to be good in the text as the fae are “sexual beings”.

If she’s going to be evil as the opening and blurb of the book says she is going to be, then she needs to be evil and, crucially, not softened in a half-baked attempt at cohesion, she needs to not be forgiven for her actions.

The plot is barely there, a slow wander through Catharina developing her new powers at an astonishing rate and being beloved by everyone she meets, including the people she formerly enslaved and tortured and being generally the most special in everyway. She’s kidnapped in the most obvious way possible and my suspension of disbelief does not extend to four random nobles materialising out of thin air for an exclusive gala and this not raising any flags. The entire court/kingdom is a papier-mâché construct that can be ignored whenever convenient for the characters which is often. A ruling monarch and reagent vanish and there’s no mass riot or jostling for power? Even in a tyrants court, she’d have sycophants and servants every hour of every day and there’s just Nothing.

She spends the entire time in a strop as two shadow/dark aligned men growl at each other over her. And they’re also cousins, a fact that cannot be forgotten as they refer to each other as ‘cousin’ Constantly.

This book has everything that I could possibly want – attractive fae, a truly badass female lead, and the slightly goofy yet surprisingly wise friend that every good fantasy needs.

It’s wonderfully smutty (never have I loved the phrase ‘sharing is caring’ more), but what impressed me most was how well Langan balanced the spice with an actual storyline that carries weight and supports the characters. The cast is diverse, engaging, and every single one felt distinct and alive.

What really hooked me was Catharina’s growth. Watching her evolve from defensive and hostile to curious, open, and understanding was so satisfying – I found myself really connecting with her as the story unfolded. She still retains the fiery temper and courage that make her so impressive, but a balance develops that makes her so very real, she is neither one thing or the other but a true reflection of both sides of herself.

Themes of friendship found family, and loyalty ran throughout, and I loved how organic and natural the relationships felt. The light hearted moments were perfectly timed, giving some welcome relief from the heavier emotional beats.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t immediately sold on Catharina’s characterization at the start, but that changed quickly – I was completely pulled into this world, hook, line and sinker.

It’s the first in a series, and I’m already drumming my fingers impatiently waiting for the next one.

This book had a few surprises!

I found this book online and after reading the blurb applied for an ARC. Thank you very much for providing me with one!

The story both shocked and comforted me. After reading about the cold hearted queen who ruled with an iron first and is in for revenge, I expected many things to happen in this book that did. What I definitely did not expect was a love triangle/why choose situation. Which honestly and unfortunately isn't one of my favorite tropes, if I had known I probably wouldn't have applied for the ARC. So with that being said, I'm going to try looking past that and base my review on the rest of the story.

I like the main characters a lot as individuals, I love that the fmc is the Grey one this time around and I like that it is written in multiple pov's.
I love some of the side characters and their banter a lot!
The mix of action, adventure, humor and dark romance is well balanced and I did enjoy the overall storyline.
There are quite a few steamy scenes and not all of them are with more than 2 characters.

I do feal that the story is a little predictable.
And the names and old words can make reading a bit challenging.

This was a 3 star read for me. ⭐️

It was easy to fall into this story, which I think is unusual for something with so much world building.

Catharina is a young Queen of a kingdom with a troubled family history. A human, she and her people have been taught to hate the Fae. Aed is a Fae prince, fighting to help his people. He has been taught that humans are cruel and had seen some of that truth first hand. But the young human Queen is…different. Other. And so begins a story filled with magic, witches, wolves, prophecies, conflict, self discovery, power, self improvement, mates, attraction, and dark vs light.

I enjoyed this, though I wish Aed and Descath’s history had been fleshed out a little more. I think that would lend more gravitas to their rivalry instead of them coming off like immature youths arguing over a girl. Kyngsman is one of those characters you love to hate, and he deserves every bit of the reader’s ire. Fergal might be my favorite character of everyone right now.

I’m interested to see where the story goes, especially since it felt like the book ended a little abruptly (as in, I was engrossed in the action and wasn’t expecting it to end where/ when it did).

JM Langan breaks into the world of fantasy with this incredible piece of writing, based on Irish folklore. The Impossible Queen was such a fun read, the short chapters are perfect for me, because it allowed me to fly through it without getting distracted. The characters were lovable, and their dynamics with each other left me wanting more. Catharina's (the fmc) character growth is amazingly well done; Langan even took me by surprise with how much I grew to love her. The pronunciation guide at the beginning is a great touch for those unsure on how to pronounce Irish names, and the trigger warning page is perfect for those who prefer to know what they're getting into. All in all I had a great time reading this !!

I think The Impossible Queen was a good idea that just didn't really catch flight. There are some really good lines, and interesting word choices which are appreciated but there were also issues with pacing and phrasing for me.

I really, really struggled with the dialogue in this one. It didnt seem to match the vibe, and it really threw me off. I also felt like the plot was a little lost on me for a good chunk of it. It also felt like there was alot of "telling" happening, which made it less immersive for me.

It's very possible that I'm not simply not the right audience for this book, and for that reason, I'll give it a 3 star rating. Hopefully this book finds the right people.

The book had a good premise. I just wish there was more depth in certain areas pertaining to the romantic relationship between Aed and Catherina. Their relationship felt very rushed and nearly forced; jumping straight to the spicy stuff, which, don’t get me wrong, I have no qualms with spice, but I do appreciate the buildup as well.

The Gaelic representation was beautiful and brought a whole new level of history to the book. I do feel like maybe the glossary should have been at the front of the book, or maybe a little bit more information on pronunciation would have been beneficial.

Overall, a decent book but don’t think I’ll continue the series.

I found the concept of this book interesting and I enjoyed learning about the history that the characters went through. At times, I felt like the story got a bit confusing but as I read on it all sort of came together. I will say that I did have some trouble with the dialogue. I haven’t read many fantasy books but given the characters, their pasts, and their lineage I didn’t expect the dialogue to be so out of place. It took me out of the story a few times but overall it was a good read. Curious to see what book 2 entails.

Honestly, I struggled with this one. While the world building was absolutely beautiful. And the characters were amazing. I struggled with the wording. I wish there had been something to help explain many of them. And because of that, it just caused me to struggle through the book. Instead of really being able to dive in and immerse myself in the story, I spent more time stumbling and slowing myself down.
I did find the main character to be an amazing and strong woman. I enjoyed her character immensely.

Kinda messy, kinda fun

So this book is like if you blended Celtic folklore, spicy romance, and Game of Thrones vibes, then sprinkled some chaos on top. I loved the setting and the idea of a morally grey queen. But wow, that romance? It goes from enemies to lovers in like 0.2 seconds. Catharina's decisions often made me go “girl, what?” but I couldn’t stop reading. Is it a bit ridiculous? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it anyway? Yeah… kinda.

I always love a mortally grey FMC. And this book checks that box. I wasn’t a fan of the insta love that happens for the characters. I wish the relationship developed a little more and over at least a bit of time. The spicy scenes were good and entertaining. I loved how the story merges mythology with fantasy. I wish there was a pronunciation page, but I made google work. Overall it’s a decent book, my draw back was the insta love. It just didn’t agree with my brain this time.
