Meanwhile, some of the Sirens from the deep visit the indigenous Skylgers to help them to reclaim what was once theirs. ☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ☆
In the final tale in the Tales of Skylge series, Fire of Skylge was nothing short of amazing.
Author Jen Minkman goes all out in this one, guns a blazing, metaphorically speaking, and we see the ultimate battle and clashing of light versus darkness take place.
I have to say that I was more than impressed with how she intricately crafts this mythical and vividly imaginative tale and was bittersweet to see it all end.
I've grown really fond and accustomed to these characters and this story's out of the box, fresh, and aesthetically pleasing story line-- so I'll just have to grin and bear the inevitable and give a sad farewell!
Can't wait for more from the talented Jen Minkman!
The truth behind St. Brandon’s Fire, once thought to be a saving grace, has been revealed. The rebellion grows and two girls join the cause wholehearted, both for their own reasons and their voices will be heard. Series: Tales of Skylge - Book 3 Publication Date: June 1, 2015 Publisher: Jen Minkman Genre: YA Dystopian Print Length: 128 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble Reviews, Promotions and all things Books: http://tometender.blogspot.com
This was a good conclusion to the trilogy. I did wish that Enna and Royce were in it more.I liked all the other characters from the books 2 & 3. However, I liked those two the best. Everything worked out for everyone which was great. All the couples were together in the end. It just sucked that one of them wasn't able to see his family again. The people all know the truth and were able to fix everything so that was nice. If you are looking for a short yet awesome trilogy then you should pick this up.
I received this book in exchange of an honest review!
The last book in this epic trilogy, I am sad to see it go, another series is finished and I can just hope that Jen Minkman will be writing more awesome trilogies in the future.
The plan was to read some other books first, but this book just pushed and pulled at me, it wanted to be read, so I decided to read it, and am I glad I did.
The main characters this time are Melinda (yay!) and Dani. It took me some time to find out who Dani was again, she was mentioned in the other books, but mostly had a small supporting role, so I totally forgot about the girl. But now she had a chance to shine, and my oh my, she is such an interesting character. I also love her full name. It fits her. I felt sorry for her, for her love for Sytse (and we can all see from the start point that Sytse's mind is on something entirely different), for feeling so hopeless at times. But, while she struggles with her feelings, at times she is afraid, she still kicks ass and will do anything for her friends, anything to help people out.
Melinda, I loved her in the previous book, and I still love her in here. She made a mistake, a mistake that she regrets deeply, but she is doing anything to make it right again, to make sure that she can see her friend again, even though she knows her feelings aren't returned, not in the way she wants. It must be so difficult, to see your best friend, your lover, with someone else. I loved how she risks everything to make things right, to help out the rebel forces. To make sure the world will be ok again.
Because all hell is breaking loose in this book. It is truly Edison (the evilness) against Tesla (the one who will save us). I really like that they are pitted against each other like this. Of course at times I was snickering, because it still sounds a bit silly. Two inventors and one big war between them. One corrupt and a pervert, the other trying to help out people. Of course, it is not only about Edison vs Tesla, but we also have the Nixen/Sirens. They still instil fear in the hearts of people, especially now that the light is gone. They are not attacking, but will they be attacking soon? What will they do? Because that icky Edison still has one of them. It was amazing to see what happened near the end, and while not really the best way to handle things, I still enjoyed it and I was happy that we could close this story/chapter.
I loved the new description of the Sirens. I was already wondering about the cover, but with that description, it explains it all.
I almost cried when that happened to Tjalling. :( Almost everyone (well with exception of one other person) got a happy ending, or at least their stuff was resolved, but Tjalling. Poor guy. He didn't deserve this. :(
Wow, that ending was amazing! I just cried when that happened. *sniffles*That was fantastic, beautiful and oh so perfect. I am so happy for those two characters, and of course for that new character that caused this beautiful reunion. They deserve this so much. And then that happens between 2 characters and I was just tearing up some more. So much tears, so beautiful. *sniffles some more* The ending, wow, wow and wow. It was a fantastic ending to a fantastic series. <3 <3
I also have to give points to the amazing cover. I just love it! A girl, swimming in the sea/ocean, with flaming hair. Amazing!
I would highly recommend this series to everyone else!
Well this wasn't what I expected. Then again, after previous two books I should've known there might be yet another leading character, but this time there's two of them. I didn't think I might actually like Mel after the second book, but here she was - being her awesome self. Add to that Dani and you've got two strong leading characters to get you through this story :) This book was a good ending to this trilogy. At least it felt like it. Story feels complete, although I wouldn't mind a part or two more ;) I really do like the ending. It was just as it should be. I wouldn't change a thing. So if you're still wondering weather to read the trilogy or not - just go on! it will be worth your time :)
Fire of Fryslan is the stunningly brilliant conclusion of the wonderfully enchanting Tales of Skylge series. I found this last part of the story to be incredibly challenging and deeply heart wrenching. My appreciation towards these fantastic characters has been greatly enriched by their bold heart and courageous love. What an extraordinary way to end this marvelous series that has stirred my heart and enriched my soul.
Dani is struggling to figure out a way to save her friends who were captured while following their hearts. She wants to ensure that her own heart doesn’t break with the loss of Sytse. No matter what it takes she will fight for her future and any happiness and peace and she can claim along the way. Melinda is in shock by recent events and only wants her friend Aska back safe and sound. She knows she will move Heaven and Earth to turn her wrong choice into something good. The road ahead isn’t easy, but these two newly bonded friends will fight for what their heart wants. Can they find a way to save those they love, or will something beyond their control raise the stakes and bring them something that neither of them expected?
I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment that I have spent immersed in this extraordinary journey. This adventure has twisted and shredded my heart while it has shown me the true and unmistakable power of love and hope. Nothing is more intoxicating or more powerful. When we give ourselves over to whatever love brings to us we are sure to discover something even better than we ever imagined. Instead of running from change, we should run towards it. Only then will we ever find true peace and joy.
Jen Minkman has stolen my heart with this marvelous story that has enveloped my entire soul in beautiful possibility and delightful bliss. She knows how to touch the heart no matter what type of characters she has created. There is a deep longing in her soul to reach others and to show them that no matter what there is always light just waiting to sweep in and sooth and revive our ragged and worn soul.
(From my blog) It is for me a real pleasure to be here to talk to you about one of my favourite authors, Jen Minkman, and her latest Young Adult book series : Tales of Skylge. You can already check my previous reviews of Jen's books by cliking here. I enjoyed the first two books of this new dystopian series and was dying to read the last one. Jen always gives me her books in exchange of an honest review and it's ALWAYS nice to be able to say : I LOVED EVERYTHING !
Fire of Fryslan, just like the previous books, kept me turning the pages quickly and delivered new perspectives. The story is told from two points of view and it's a pleasant surprise to find Dani and Melinda to tell us about how everything will end. I liked them already but it was great to discover them more. Both of them are endearing, strong and realistic characters. Their stories made it simple to love them but also to follow the main plot of the book. I can say it was a perfect choice !
Regarding the writing, again, as a fan of dystopian YA universe, I found every ingredient, everything I enjoy. There were intensity, funny moments and something deep and thought provoking about what the characters had to go through. The writing here, allowed me to put mysellf in the shoes of Dani and Melinda easily. We could see how and why they were different.
About the romance, it was balanced and beautiful. Though the story telling concentrated about the war that was about to begin, I could feel real emotions. And most of all, it was refreshing to read... Okay, no spoilers ! But I'm happy to tell you that this is not what you would expect the most.
As usual, when I love a book that much, I want everyone to read it ! That's maybe why I don't have a lot to say about Fire of Fryslan. Just know that this is a MUST READ dystopian book series. Grab your copy of Sound of Sirens, the first book, and you will travel through an original universe, compelling and brillant too. I loved that it was about mermaids and a folklore that's, in my opinion, not often enough depicted in books. It made the experience of reading exciting and amazing. The writing is powerful, meaning that it takes you where the author wants. There is a lot to love about Tales of Skylge and so you have to read ! Young reader or not, you will love this new dystopian series !
I received a free copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the final book in the Tales of Skylage series. It was an oddly happy ending to the series. We got to see all of the old characters come back for one final performance, and watch their love stories conclude. I guess I was expecting a different ending, maybe a full on war with carnage? But happy endings are cool too.
In the Fire of Fryslan, we take off from where the last novel left off. But with two previously known minor characters, Melinda and Dani. Both girls. They are banding together to get Aska, Tjalling, Sytse, Enna, and Royce out of the clutches of the Mayor. Since they worked together to take the fire and give it back to the mer-people. There's also a love connection between our two characters, as they struggle to save previous love interests. The war of the Currents has begun.
So this was basically an all around happy ending kind of story, except Tjalling. And the non-specific characters who died. I both like that and have a problem with that. I like it because who doesn't like a happy ending? Especially when you like all of the characters who get the happy ending? But it felt kind of cheesy at the same time. I mean the story makes a full circle, including all the little pieces you probably forgot about from the previous books. I guess I wanted some more realism in the story. But it definitely had a twist at the end I didn’t expect, so that kind of made up for it.
I really liked seeing the dynamic between all the people inhabiting the island. Watching the Anglians fall from grace, as they realized they aren't actually better. The Skylagers getting to be equal with the people who oppressed them for so long. Also seeing the merpeople coming from the sea, and their like, "Now beat it." I love it when society get's turned on it's head.
This one wasn't focused on romance as much as the other novels. It was more about concluding the series. So if you're looking for the romance that the other novels had, it's not as prevalent here. Still fun to read about though, especially if you're invested in this series.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
A short and sweet review, for a short and sweet book!
Why I read it: I've read the first two novellas in this series and I liked them both very much, so of course had to read the final book!
Plot: The story picks up right where it left off, this time from the point of view of two characters who were in the background of the last novel, Dani and Melinda. They are both from different backgrounds, but come together to save their friends who are in trouble after getting caught extinguishing the light that allegedly protected their island from the Sirens. The truth is finally revealed that the light did no such thing, but those in power are desperate to hold on and will do anything to stay there.
My Thoughts: It took me little while to remember who was who in this series, but it all came back soon enough. As this continues on directly from where Light of Lorelei left off, I suppose you could call this the climax of the trilogy.
I really liked how the Sirens were interpreted in this story, and how everything connected together. For such a short novella, it had a lot going on, but it never felt rushed. It was fun being baack in this world, though there were some tense and horrible moments. I think it was a great way to end the series!
While I'm not really a fan of the whole, different characters continue a series, thing; I connected with both Melinda and Dani and the roles they played. It made sense for someone outside the circle of friends we are initially introduced to, to continue the story (since everyone else is in jail!)
In Brief: A strong finish to an enjoyable little trilogy, they are all quick reads, and I would most definitely recommend them if you had lazy day to spend some time reading.
There are authors that just get how to talk directly to your heart. And for me Jen Minkman is one of them. I remember winning First Reads some years ago and reading one of her novels (Shadow of Time). It was good, but not my favorite. I´ve written a review with both praise and a bit of criticism. What was my surprise when the author contacted me to review her next book. And so it goes since then and I have to say that each book is better than the previous one! Right now I will buy any title by Jen Minkman without even reading a synopsis.
Fire of Fryslan is the last, 3rd book in a series Tales of Skylge. And it´s definitely the best. Minkman skilfully connects all the characters from the fist two books and ties all the, seemingly, loose ends. There is tension and drama, but at the end we get the necessary catharsis and a happy end. An ancient land where well known characters appear, we discover to be an alternative reality of our world. I´m the first one to be very skeptical about happy ends, but once the reader understands all the story, I believe a happy end was an only option. It gives hope and reinstates the faith in humanity and our capability of changing the world together.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was the perfect end to a really interesting trilogy. It took everything I thought I wanted in a book and twisted it into this alternate universe fantasy read (with mermen!). I can honestly say that there is nothing else on my virtual bookshelf that comes close.
In this installment we follow Dani and Melinda as they try to rescue the objects of their affection from the evil mayor. At the end of the previous book we watched the rebel gang get caught after returning the light to where it belonged and ending electricity use on the island. Dani believes that she can make Sytse love her by showing him how brave she is. Melinda believes she can show Aska how much she loves her by undoing her betrayal. Somewhere along the line, Dani and Melinda start believing in the cause and worrying less about the love story.
This final chapter gives us a great resolution to the evil mayor's plan, a nice path forward for all the oppressed islanders, and love for all of our star-crossed lovers. These books should obviously be read in order to deliver the maximum payoff. If you're looking for something new and interesting, this trilogy makes for a quick and satisfying read.
One of the things I love about Minkmans writing is how beautifully descriptive it is without bogging you down with page after page of descriptive text, and Fire of Fryslan is no different.
My to read pile is HUGE... but this book called to me the minute it hit my kindle and I couldn't ignore it. So much so that I read this book in its entirety in just one sitting.
This book is told from the POV of Dani (Enna's friend) and Melinda aka Lin (Aska's friend). It has been a while since I read Sound of Sirens and The Light of Lorelei, so I was a little hazy as to who Dani was, but there's a couple little reminders at the beginning of the book. I really enjoyed seeing what the rebellion looked like from the eyes of people who loved those taking an active part... and also seeing them realise that they aren't just strong for their loved ones but strong for themselves.
This is a great mix of folklore, dystopian, paranormal and romance... and you might think that cant possibly work, but it does. It really does.
Another trilogy is done. When is the next one? I received this as an ARC from Jen Minkman. I love all of Minkman’s work. Descriptive where I feel a part of this story. Dystopian & paranormal all the like, all with a mix of historical figures. Jen always has me googling things when I read her stories, must find out more. Never thought about the contract b/n two power houses of Edison and Tesla. Nor, in my education, did I need to know. I appreciate the inspiration to learn more, and I am always willing. No spoilers from me. Thanks Jen! I look forward to your new musings and next works of art.
Rocking closure of the series. Revolution is a bitch. Tense book, in a positive way. It kept me thinking for a couple of days about the sacrifices people have to make when fighting for freedom. Dani is a lovely character! You don't notice her that much in the previous books but in this book she shines, grows and learns a great deal about herself, struggling with her unanswered love for Sytse and her confusion about Melinda. Melinda is just as fresh and sweat as she was earlier, trying to make up for her mistake. Loved the romance in the entire trilogy, missed Royce and Enna's view in the end. To much distance, I've grown very fond of them in the first book.
Frankly, after reading the other parts this one surprised me the most. Because I expected to be written from the old characters. So seeing Melinda and Dani was strange. Also I loved the ending.
This was an amazing journey and there were more happy endings then there were books which I love.
Glad I could have been a part of this and experience this kind of stories.
I’ve really enjoyed the other two books in this series. I loved how everything came together in the end. All of the characters are really likable. A great end to a series! 4 stars.
This was the last book of the Tales of Skylge series. I have not read many books or series about merfolk so I found the subject of this series interesting. I also liked it how each book had kind of its own view point and the protagonists were different in each book as well.
*SPOILER ALERT*
This book was a good conclusion for the trilogy and it answered all the questions that remained unanswered in the two previous books. This time the story concentrated on Dani and Melinda (Enna's and Aska's best friends) and on their efforts to help the rebels out of prison where they were put by mayor Edison after setting the Light of Lorelei free.
I'm actually happy that the author chose Dani and Melinda to be the voices for this third book. I didn't have a strong opinion about them before but I grew to like them both a lot. They were both strong characters fighting for the people they loved and it was interesting to get to know more about them. I'm also happy they found each other in the end and were able to move on from their unrequited loves for Aska and Sytse.
I kind of found it interesting how there seemed to be so many same sex relationships in this series. You would think that if Skylger/Anglian relationships were not allowed, that people wouldn't accept same sex relationships either. But I kind of liked that aspect in the story.
In addition to Dani and Melinda, everybody else seemed to have a happy ending, too, which was nice. I wasn't thrilled about the fact that Aska's father returned to the island because the odds for both of her parents still being alive and well were not good. I always had a feeling that he would make an appearance, though. I also would have liked to know more about what was happening to the rebels in the prison. I wish there had been some chapters from their point of view as well.
On the whole, this was a nice series that was quick to read. I could very well read more books written by Jen Minkman in the future.
Fire of Fryslan is a thrilling conclusion to the story begun in Sound of Sirens. It’s more fast-paced than the previous installments, which is fair because it has a lot of loose ends to wrap up. Practically every character with a major role in the previous two books has some kind of closure due to them. To Minkman’s credit, each of them gets it in a way that doesn’t feel too neat or rushed. In facts, she brings the strand of each story together so they bind together in a very satisfying way.
On the other hand, having so many narratives needing attention can get a bit distracting, if not confusing. Melinda and Dani are technically the point-of-view characters for this book. It’s actually great to get inside Melinda’s relatively privileged mindset, and watching her change long-held opinions provides a small-scale model of what the rest of her society is going through. Dani falls a little flat; she seems to be little more than a romantic foil, first for Sytse and then for Melinda. I didn’t remember much about her from the first book, so it was hard to be very invested in her story.
The ending was a heart-wrenching mix of tragedy and triumph, though I could have done without Mayor Edison’s “revelation,” which felt heavy-handed. It broke the spell of the world that Minkman had so carefully woven throughout the series. Overall, though, I think Fire of Fryslan is my favorite of the series, and I highly recommend the Tales of Skylge from beginning to end.
Fire of Fryslan is the conclusion to the Tales of Skylge series and it really wrapped things up nicely and also added an interesting character POV (Melinda) and her trials, both with the existing story arc of the series and also coming to grips with her sexual orientation. I would like to state that the author has handled this particularly tricky topic with realism and tact. You only got a glimpse of Melinda’s character in the previous books but in this installation you definitely come to sympathize with her. She’s a girl stuck between two worlds, the one she was born into and the one that she wants to make for herself. She really is a very courageous and admirable character. Like the other books in the series this one was extremely well written and the author’s attention to detail and extraordinary world building capabilities make this a very enjoyable read. The only critique I would offer is that the constantly changing POVs can make comprehending this complex plot structure a little difficult. But the changing POV is necessary since there are a number of story lines that need to be wrapped up. The ending of the book felt a little rushed and I would have liked to see it fleshed out a little bit more. I really enjoyed this series and it’s one of the more original series that I have read in a long time.
Overall, the series was fine. It was a quick read. The plot advanced almost too quickly. This whole series takes place over the course of like two weeks? Felt too fast, honestly. The character development suffered a bit for that. I also just never found the writing to be particularly...good. Those are the primary reasons I'm at 3 stars for this whole series.
This book, though, poses another big problem for me. I'm so confused by the ending. I won't spoiler beyond the obvious, but I'm super unclear about how I'm supposed to feel about everyone having access to power based on how the author presents this information. It teed up a major conflict for me between how I expected to feel: Yay! No more discrimination. Everyone can be themselves and no one is better than anyone else and how some of the information made me think I was supposed to feel: widespread access to electricity will result in terrible things like nuclear bombs and war. Wait, so it's worth subordinating certain classes of people to avoid that? Love will overcome it? (The examples given are historical events that have happened, so love clearly didn't overcome it.) Huh???
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this series and I think Jen Minkman is a amazing writer. I think I went into this one with really high expectations, but for me, it fell a bit short. This book follows two characters that were introduced in the other books, but I thought they still seemed like supporting characters. I felt like the climax to this story was really in the second book and that this book was just sort of wrapping things up. It just felt flat to me. If you've read the rest of the series (and you should) of course you should read this one. I really, really wanted to love it, but I didn't. I thought this book was good, but not great.
3 1/2 Platypires for Fire of Fryslan by Jen Minkman
I received a free digital copy for an honest review.
This was the last book in the Tales of Skylge trilogy. I thought it was a pretty good ending and wrapped up the series pretty well. This time around we get two new narrators instead of just one. Even though I liked the girls I wasn't that big of a fan of changing the POVs; especially when it wasn't done in the previous two novels. Other than that the story was pretty good and it kept me interested. I liked how all the characters came together and some of the mysteries were answered.
I would recommend the Tales of Skylge series for those who enjoy the dystopian genre.
This trilogy gets better with every book. There are so many unexpected twists and turns as well as so much love and passion. Secrets are revealed, danger lurks around every corner, and love concurs all. Melinda and Dani work together to help uncover the secrets of Skylge and bring them to light, while trying to save the ones they love. Jen Minkman did an excellent job bringing me into the world of merfolk and Skygle.
