Who is Auric? This is what trendscaper Christian Powers is tasked with uncovering as the mysterious, golden alien superbeing appears from deep space, seeking to save human lives—wielding unfathomable powers and compassionate hyperintelligence. But what if the dystopian America of the near future doesn’t want to be saved from itself? Christian’s pulled in deeper when Auric actively recruits him to his otherworldly cause, along with other hand-picked representatives for a better and brighter future. A science fiction novel packed with satirical and philosophical humor, THE AURICLE serves up readers a dazzling utopian tale of adventure and intrigue—is it the end of the world, or merely the end of the world as we know it?
DNF at 74%. The Auricle started off strong with a fascinating premise and a very clever execution. If you’re willing to suspend disbelief, it actually feels quite believable, which is impressive given the concept.
However, as the story went on, I found it increasingly difficult to stay engaged. The narrative began to feel repetitive, and eventually I decided to stop at 74%. It’s worth noting that I read an early ARC, so there may still be substantial editing before publication, which could tighten the pacing and improve the overall flow. As it stands in this version, though, the repetition made it hard for me to stay invested.
I very much enjoyed this satirical SciFi apocalyptic dystopian/utopian novel by Dean Vale! STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND meets CHILDHOOD'S END, THE DISPOSSESSED, and CATCH-22. Dare I say I caught some Tom Robbins vibes, as well. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, but found THE AURICLE to be thought-provoking and uniquely entertaining. Vale’s voice, style, and perspective are refreshing in a market glutted by books that are ‘more of the same.‘
