The Tired Dad.: 100 Reflections on Showing Up for What Matters Most

Rate this book
100 doses of wisdom for all the tired dads out there. You aren’t alone in pursuing what matters showing up for your family.

If you’re a tired dad, that likely means that you’re a good dad. It means you're tired from parenting, not of parenting. Jon Gustin, a writer, content creator, and dad of two, has been tired since his first child was born. He grew up hearing messages that emphasized career pursuits, stoic masculinity, and that being a financial provider is the sole purpose of fatherhood. But Gustin, like many modern fathers, is pushing back on that narrative.

Gustin’s simple message in The Tired Dad is “keep showing up.” To be cherished in your children’s memories tomorrow, be present today. And dads, you don't have to do it alone. Whether you’re a sleep-deprived new dad, a dad working to raise emotionally resilient kids, or a dad of teens trying to figure out how to connect with your kids as they grow more independent, there’s something here that will resonate, challenge, and inspire you, no matter the age, stage, or season.

The Tired Dad reminds you that the monumental effort you’re spending to love, care for, and connect with your kids is not wasted (even if it sometimes feels that way). In these 100 reflections short enough to gulp down with your morning coffee, you’ll find a shot of inspiration that fits into your busy schedule, thought-provoking enough to stick with you throughout the day, and lasting enough to make a difference in your kids’ lives.

You’re doing a good job, Dad. Keep showing up. It matters.

This doesn't just offer a profound and necessary blueprint for the modern family. From a woman's perspective, this book is not just a gift to tired dads- it's an incredible gift to their partners and their children. I'm so grateful this exists. Parenting is hard and I've seen how different being a dad in this generation is (my husband does an amazing job of being present and showing love to our wild child).

Jon Gustin breaks down the old definitions of masculinity that have kept fathers on the sidelines. This book affirms and celebrates the monumental effort that so many of our partners are quietly putting in every day.

My favorite part of the book is how it highlights the often- unseen ways fathers are now deeply involved in parenting. From helping with the mental load to validating their children's emotions, Gustin shines a spotlight on the work that is so crucial. This was a powerful reminder to me that as a partner, we should celebrate and appreciate the man who is trying so hard, even when he's tired.

Jon Gustin has a message for dads. Actually, he has 100 of them. The message, “You are seen. You can do this. For dads that are trying to do their best financially for their families, be a good husband, be a good dad, be a good and faithful follower of Jesus, be a good friend, and be a good employee/boss, it can just plain wear you out. As matter of fact, some of you may have felt your anxiety level go up just reading that list of obligations. Gustin wrote this book for you.

There were more than a few times that I just couldn’t relate to his experiences. But isn’t that life. It’s different for all of us. We don’t have a cookie-cutter life to follow.

There wasn’t anything earth shattering or groundbreaking in this book. However, each reminder is a good one, even if some of these come second nature to the reader.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.
