The Skeletons in Our Closet

Rate this book
For as long as he can recall, Daedalus Macabre has been bound to one rule above all Don't Step Out of Line.

He's always followed it to the letter—his days spent training in elegant forms of fighting, his nights spent studying in his library, and the breaths between spent lost in the worn keys of his piano. He keeps his head down, and he does what he's told.

But when Daedalus moves to Nemoure and meets Cain Sidrelle, his meticulously crafted control and rigorous adherence to the rules seem to disappear overnight. Without realizing it, his entire world narrows down to a pretty rich boy with hair like hellfire. A hellfire that threatens to consume him with every passing smile and shared glance.

Still, his mother's expectations are a heavy burden, and her anger only grows with his continued distraction and blatant disregard for her rules. The longer Daedalus allows himself his dalliance with Cain, the more dire the consequences become. Until one day those consequences arrive, and Daedalus is faced with a punishment he cannot run away from.

Separated by forces outside their control, Daedalus and Cain must overcome years of distance and longing when fate deems to grant them a second chance. But as others start to find themselves in Daedalus' way, Cain begins to question whether this is the man he once knew, and if there can be any hope for the two of them in the end.

The Skeletons In Our Closet features a colorful cast, stereotype-redefining men, considerable amounts of magic—with a side of heat and obsession like no other.

The Skeletons in Our Closet by Sinclair A. Macabre was definitely outside of my usual reading comfort zone, but I ended up really enjoying it. It’s a dark romantasy that pulls you in quickly, and I found myself hooked almost right away.

Part 1 was my favourite! I loved the atmosphere, the pacing, and the way the characters were introduced. The writing had this moody, immersive quality that made it hard to put down. Part 2, however, took a turn that felt a little strange to me. The story grew more complex and I sometimes found it hard to keep up with what was happening.

That said, I still enjoyed the ride. Even when I was confused, the gothic tone and emotional intensity kept me turning pages. If you’re looking for something dark, romantic, and a little unusual, this book is worth checking out.

I've been looking forward to that book for ages - the story sounded intriguing, the cover is simply amazing, and something about it all just spoke to me instantly.
75 pages in I'm abandoning this read. The writing style is flawless and beautiful, but the whole story setup is a mess. No character interaction makes sense, we jump from scene to scene seemingly at will, the main character Daedalus is simply an unbearable tragedy and his love interest Cain (the only character I've somewhat enjoyed reading about) went from instant disgust and arrogantly rich to absolutely enarmored and charming-sweet in a heartbeat.
Make it make sense.
It's as if the author had planned out this story and put it together with the most beautiful writing style but without anything of substance or coherence at all. It's pretty to look at but empty behind the facade - in other words, it's just pretentious in my opinion.
So yes, this will go - unfortunately so - to the "abandoned" project-stack.

Thank you Sin for the opportunity to ARC this book, and to be able to slide into your DM’s and share my ..sometimes not so coherent thoughts.

This book is a MM gothic fantasy psychological horror romance.

There’s not really an easy way to describe it. It comes in two parts. Part one is. Very difficult for those with issues with a maternal figure in their life, body distortion issues, and part of me felt so connected to Daedalus. I felt for him in such a distinct way I haven’t in a long time. But it also made it hard to read sometimes and made me put the book down for a bit. It’s why it took me so long to read. Cain is the MLI in this story, but he remains mostly an enigma throughout both part one and two.
Part two is not..lighter? But is? But isn’t. You don’t really see the split happening. You think surely this won’t…really? That actually? Wow. And it’s been a while since a book was able to shock me. Or that I’ve been able to write a review this long. So. Kudos.
Back to part two. It’s.. that it’s hard to understand and track. It’s that you really need to be paying attention. There is a lot of Easter eggs, hidden object, and breadcrumbs in the book that get you to where you are when the book ends. There is mild spice sprinkled in part two, which would make me label this a slowed down slow burn. But wow what a burn.
The book has a funnnnnny way of making you really think you definitely understand something. And then showing you. You absolutely don’t and you’re maybe illiterate.
I loved it and I can’t wait for the second book.

I don’t normally go in depth for my reviews because they are usually just for me to look back on and remember that I enjoyed or didn’t enjoy a book. But seeing as this book is written by a great friend of mine, I want to give it my honest review. Not just as their friend, but as a fellow reader and lover of books.

I had gotten the opportunity to be an ARC reader for TSIOC. But because of some things that happened around the time the ARC was sent out, I had only gotten halfway through the book before motivation vanished. Once I had a physical copy in hand months later, I knew I had to give it a real chance and my full attention now that motivation had returned.

This book has easily become one of my favorites for this year. Dark, gothic, romantic, and spicy written in a way that not only emphasizes the importance of consent, but also in a way that doesn’t take away from the entire plot. It’s not overdone, not extremely graphic in ways that feel off, and just shows the true connection between the main characters.

Both Daedalus and Cain are complex characters, and the book keeps a sort of mystery to their pasts that makes the reader think and want more. Through first person writing, you can be pushed into the point of view of Daedalus, and even sometimes feel what he is feeling because of the wonderful descriptions that Sinclair created in their writing style. Their words paint a picture in the heads of their readers in a way where you can feel as if you see the characters, the places, the events vividly when you close your eyes.

This book is their debut, their baby. And you can tell just how hard they worked on this story. It is absolutely worth giving it a chance!

I did enjoy this book and enjoyed the two main characters! It sucked me in in the beginning and built up an interesting world. Dae is fascinating, and I love everything about his character. I think he is well written, and his episodes are well written too. His design is also top notch! Cain is also very enjoyable - I love his flare, and he can be sweet.

The twist I loved:

Where it falls a bit flat is that it seems like this should have been edited down to a shorter book or fleshed out into a trilogy. There are a lot of characters that *seem* like they'd be interesting, but we know next to nothing about them. The brother? Set up to be someone important than just nothing. He helps once but no interaction. The new best friend? They talk like once, have an emotional bond, then we never see him again.

So it feels like the author has this amazing world in their head, but we only see parts of it on paper, so while the author may know the interesting bits of all these characters, we do not. I want to know about the dad and his mysterious friend! What about that trainer? What was his deal? There are all these delicious crumbs that I want more from.

Still, it is very well written for a first book, so while this isn't at the top of my scores, I'd def read the author again as they grow. So much potential!

I was squealing only a few chapters into this one. Daedalus and Cain are adorable. 😭

Daedalus is for the socially awkward, the introverts, those who grew up with the heavy weight of expectation rather than warmth and support. There's something innocent about him, despite the darkness that he can wield.

Cain is pretty, popular, and easily commands the attention of any room he enters. But he's also soft, and warm and sweet. He smells like roses. 🌹

I just loved them from the outset, and I couldn't help myself. It takes them some time to figure out they both want the same thing, but I was cheering for them the whole way.

I stared at the end of part one for a few minutes before I could even bring myself to turn the page. I was shocked, even though I knew there was still a lot of story to tell.

I did want part two to be longer, because ✨️I✨️ wanted to linger in it. It's very sweet, and I'd have gladly read another hundred pages of just that. ❤️

3!

Okay so, I'm going to start with what I liked! I really like Cain and Daedalus. What sweeties. I thought part 1 was really strong. I enjoyed seeing the struggles Daedalus went through (not necessarily "enjoyed", but I was intrigued by it and it made me want to continue reading). I definitely tore thru this story bc I read it in 2 ish days, haha!

I enjoyed imagining how Cain and Dae dressed as well and also how their interactions were. I loved the subtle things between them and how obvious it was that Cain was drawn to Dae immediately. Dae is an interesting guy, so I don't see why Cain wouldn't be interested c:

I think the writing is rather good too! It's easy to read without being too easy, but also meant that I didn't accidentally read too many parts and realize I have to go back and reread. That's also not necessarily the fault of an author. It's mostly bc my attention span is crazy HAHA!

I did have some issues tho! Part 2 was really weird? I feel like I also woke up like Daedalus and I had no idea what was going on? I didn't feel like it flowed well. It also felt a little bit aimless? Like we were looking for Cain and then that was kind of it? I feel like I was confused by some of the characters that weren't Daedalus either.

I know we can't always get answers in stories, but man, something about the situation with Daedalus' mother and then his whole family dynamic was strange to me. I was intrigued to see where it was going, but then all of a sudden she was dead and he was punished for it ;-; I wanted more there. I also have noooo idea what the point of his brother was. I know Dae mentioned that he was supposed to be some kind of test? That his mother introduced for him? About how he is allowed to be more free etc, but there was really no interaction between them. The best interaction was when he wanted to help Dae get dressed for the party and I was kinda craving more interaction like that to see what was up with the appearance of a younger brother.

Speaking of characters, many of the side characters kinda fell flat to me? Again, I know we didn't have to go super in depth, but I would have loved even more interaction between Asher and Dae and honestly, maybe even Dae with some of Cain's friends. I know how he is tho, so prob most with Asher. They had that one connection part and it felt great, but then after that it was nothing. I would have loved to see them doing experiments and stuff together.

Speaking of the experiments, was this labeled as a dark academia? I feel like I saw it was in some of the marketing. That fell flat for me too. I've been trying to find more dark academia vibes that I actually really like (I know this is cliche, but Babel was sooo good) and I don't really like when something labels itself as dark academia without including some kind of academia. Dae loves (or is at least interested in) science and experimentation. We don't get any of that until part 2 and in part 2 I just kind of have no reason to understand why he was working on that adrenaline thing other than he thought it would be cool. It would have been great to see him doing something with Asher or at least show more of how he was trying to work on something like it in school in the labs. I only remember him trying to summon the shadow blade.

Anyways, overall, I still enjoyed the book! I think this is a lovely read if you love queer rep that is normalized in a world as well.

3.5/5

This book is extremely unusual to say the least, I felt myself lost a lot of the time havi g more questions than answers - think this was the authors intention to keep her readers invested x
The story is a 2 parter & for me I enjoyed part 1 a lot more than I did part 2 x I felt like part one flowed a lot better & the events that took place were easier to follow & understand x The author does a great job of building the world and characters throughout the story x What I did feel fell flat for me was how sometimes characters would just pop almost out of the blue, having never been mentioned before which really confused me, also I dont know if it was just because I felt a little confused at times but I didnt quite understand that this was an MM fantasy as some of the descriptions used for the characters gave off no binary characteristics,(Just as a side FYI I have no issues with genders & what gender - if any - a person is), I just got super confused with the descriptions sometimes x Again I feel like this might have been a move on the authors behalf to keep the reader committed to reading the story x
Part 2 for me fell short & just didnt make sense for me over all, however I was already committed to seeing this book through that I just had to see what was going to become of the characters x
Overall I did actually quite enjoy The Skeletons in our Closets, especially the super slow burn parts - known they had feelings for each other but not taking action upon these feelings for a long time - would definitely recommend for any dark fantasy reader who enjoy a slow spicy romance xxxxx

This is more like a 4.8 because of the fantasy racism introduced in chapter 2 that gets dropped later. It really could have been cut out since nothing later addresses it.

This is a story written by a queer author for a queer audience.

Slow-burn Romance feels natural with the old fashion (Poe type) of gothic writing. The writing itself was vivid, very atmospheric as you’d hope for a gothic romantasy. If you like Frakenstein, this is your blood-berry jam.

This is not a world-building focused fantasy. It focuses on the power and control of the mother figure over Dae and his love for Cain steadily giving him strength to refute her dehumanizing cruelty. There are classism elements (with fantasy racism mentioned in chapter 2 that doesn’t play a role in future chapters) throughout.

with its self-defeatist talk representing C-PTSD and depression. This Rot--as its called--is important in part 2 and Sinclaire paces its influence steadily throughout the story. The writing will take you on this ride that may seem confusing, but portrays trauma and memory less very well.

ALSO, You will love both Cain and Daedalus. They are the SWEETEST couple ever.

Overall, very much enjoyed the characters and atmosphere. Found the fear extremely palpable.

Note: The color red has a lot of patterns throughout the story.

"He looks like the pinnacle of elegance, the pinnacle of beauty, the thing to sate my appetite. I'm the wick burning under his flame, he's the wildfire in the forest of me."

Y'all. I was so invested in this story. Daedalus and Cain are such interesting characters and the cutest couple!

I did struggle to get into the story a bit at first — not 100% sure why, maybe the pacing was a little slow for my taste in the beginning — but I'm so glad I stuck with it. It's dark, it's emotionally intense, it's fresh and interesting.

Unexpectedly, there was a bit of explicit spice — which I loved. Caught me off guard in the best way.

I liked the worldbuilding and the writing style a lot, too. From a cool fantasy world to casual queer rep to beautiful, detailed outfit and setting descriptions, The Skeletons In Our Closets hit a lot of notes very well for me.

My only slight issue was that I was kind of confused at some points due to many named side characters being introduced that don’t add much to the overarching main plot, and some questions I had along the way being left unanswered. Since there will be a second book, I'm assuming whatever I thought went nowhere in this one will be tied up in the follow-up, so I'm reserving my judgement until it's out and I've read it.

4.3⭐️ I really enjoyed this book. I found it creative, especially the skeletal markings, I thought that was cool. The first half is so frustrating (in a good way) regarding Dae’s home situation. The cut off of part 1 was like 😲 I didn’t want to be real.

Part 2, I enjoyed a bit less. After the final event of the first part (to avoid spoilers) I wanted to see WHAT “everything changed” meant but felt like I didn’t get that. I also really couldn’t get behind how gore-y the one scene was, it made me reduce my rating a bit.
I felt like the ending was a bit… lacking? Like there are obv still issues to be resolved, but I think it needed more of a cliffhanger, like without knowing there’s going to be a sequel, the ending would just make you think all unresolved issues are ignored.

Overall, def worth a read. I think it was an interesting book with likeable MCs and I’m looking forward to book 2

And can we talk about how this is one of the most gorgeous book covers I’ve ever seen ????!!!

I quiet enjoyed this one! It's very dark and twisty but with a slooowww burn which is my favorite kind of romance. Sinclair definitely has a way of creating an entire atmosphere and it's just an absolutely perfect fit for the spooky season. It's one of those books where at one point you will go "Wait what?!" and then want to flip back to check if you're understanding anything at all. I love that feeling and I love how this book delivered it.

I DNF but not because I didn’t enjoy it. This book is so beautifully written but it was too much of a slow burn for me and I have no patience.
