The Rising Dark started off a bit rough, and I was worried I wasn’t going to enjoy it because it felt super rushed at the beginning. As the story progressed though things started to fall together.

I enjoyed the fact that the history behind vampires and how they’re created is different than the typical “you get bit, and if you live you turn into one”. In this story, they’re born by other vampires, not made during their life. They also don’t “live forever”, their lives are just extended.

The problems I found a bit was the lack of action, when I think of a vampire story with a rogue one attacking people, I think of a lot more action than this book provided. I also noted that the romance didn’t pick up at all until 70% in.

The story was interesting enough to keep me going, but the lack of action or romance until towards the end left me wanting more.

I overall enjoyed the storyline and the backbones of it. Will I read the second one in the series? Most likely not, but I am still glad I read this one.

Totally action packed. I’m a sucker for a vampire romance. (Sorry for the bad pun). 3.5 stars rounded to 4!

"The Rising dark" has:
- Slow burn
- Vampire x human
- Sapphic romance
- Witches/magic
- Fake dating

Michelle is a human that is being hunted by a monster.
Her savior? Lavinia, a vampire who rescues her and sweeps her away to a hidden house full of vampire warriors.
The vampires must figure out who or what is terrorizing the city- and why it is so focused on Michelle.
Before long, a romance starts to brew between the two women. but, things are tough when you’re fighting for your life.

I liked this!
I can eat up a paranormal romance, and this is certianly an example.
The way Lavinia would kill to keep Michelle safe. The way that she would do anything for this woman? Oh boy.
They are just… so good together.

The way vampires were portrayed in this was interesting.
Most of them hate unnesscary violence or death, apart from a select few which are not accepted by the rest. Also, vampires here are born, not turned.
I will admit as a self-proclaimed connoisseur of vampire stories- I don’t prefer this. I just love the more classic vampire lore.
But, this was new, different and interesting- so I have respect for that. There is always fun in modern takes and switching things up.

I have to note the feeding scene. I just-
I can’t handle the tension, yet I am in love with the tension.
This was my without a doubt my favorite part of this entire book, and I NEEDED MORE.

Thank you to Netgalley, Nyx Publishing and author Celia Thorn for providing me with the eARC of "The Rising Dark", in exchange for my honest review!

I’m always curious to see how authors depict vampires. Everyone is different and the world building in the book was intriguing to me. I laughed when it was explained that they could eat garlic. The vampires in The Rising Dark also don’t have to be asked to be invited in, can go out in the sun(but it burns), have babies(vampires aren’t created, they’re born), and live for several hundred years, not forever . honestly, I love that it differs so much from what we see as the “typical vampire” that folklore and media has portrayed.

There’s a lot of word building in this book, it’s the first in a series Understandably so, it takes a while for the action to start, which is funny, because the beginning just throws you right in. But the author has to build up the lore and world of these sword-wielding vampires, so I could see where some people think it’s too slow. But I enjoyed it, I actually would’ve liked to see more of Lavinia and Michelle building their relationship. I feel as if the author does a good job of this, but I’d like a little more showing than telling.

The last 20% of the novel is where the most action is. I did find myself wanting a little more in terms of action.

Welcome back: my vampire obsession!!
I love strong women that would kill for you ugh

It wasn't the typical vampire stuff I've seen in movies and have read in other books, but I wasn't opposed to it. Not at all! It was a welcome change, although I probably still prefer the classic vampire.

The book was packed with action, and I enjoyed every single page.

I liked the dynamic between Lavinia and Michelle from their first encounter, and I LOVED following their story.

I can’t wait to read more books by Celia Thorn!!

The vampire romance I’ve always wanted.

The cover made me wonder if this book was also going to be a gothic romance, as many vampire story’s are, and I would have been fine with that but to find that this book is set now was a delight. Finally a slow burn vampire x human romance that I could really sink my teeth into 😏

A beautiful slow burn, worth the wait as the characters don’t just jump into bed with each other, they build a foundation of a relationship, just as the story does and then all at once everything comes together (no pun intended that time).

Action packed, exciting, unexpected twist, and a slow burn romance for a vampire with a big birthday next year!

I really enjoyed this book, to the extent that I put off reading the end as I did not want it to end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the opportunity to read the modern vampire sapphic story we have all deserved for a long time.

I was slightly worried upon starting this book as the beginning felt rushed. Soon the action started to ramp up and the story flowed a little easier. I unfortunately still found myself jumping ahead. I enjoyed the unique approach to how vampires come to be. I feel like the romance (MC’s feelings) was too forward yet minimal at the same time. For a story revolving around a rogue vampire causing havoc, I wish there was more action. I feel like that element could have been stronger in order to push the theme.

The Rising Dark is a quick, action packed paranormal sapphic romance between a vampire and a could have been witch, human nurse.

The book gets in the action fairly quickly. Lavinia, the vampire, is fighting off a demon in the streets of London while searching for a vampire serial killer and Michelle, the nurse, encounters her while Lavinia is fighting and tries to help her with the wound she has on her stomach, only to see it basically disappear in front of her eyes. She doesn’t give it as much thought as I would have expected but maybe she just didn’t want to believe what she couldn’t explain. Michelle is taken to Thornblood, where Lavinia lives with the Sisters of the Twilight, which is a group of vampires who protect their kind and kill those who threaten their existence and well being, to be protected.

I enjoyed the book. I do think the relationship between Lavinia and Michelle felt like instalove but everyone writes paranormal romances differently so maybe that’s how vampires feel in this setting. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the tension between them, the trust they developed and the sweet moments like the TV room hangouts and the hair washing. The pacing was good, in my opinion. I would have liked to know a bit more about what the witches were actually planning to do or what they knew but we were warned since they were introduced that they were mysterious. Maybe we’ll get to know them better in a sequel. I also felt like the curiosity about her biological dad’s lineage was kind of left up in the air.

Overall, the book never bored me and I didn’t feel like I needed to put it down. I would like to read the upcoming sequels to see if some of the conflicts left open here will be resolved.

This is my first Celia Thorn book, and I had no idea if I'd like it or not. I don't read a lot of paranormal romances, but I wanted to give it a shot.

I don't have much to say about The Rising Dark. It was fine. It was sort of superficial where the characters are concerned. No one had any real depth, and I wanted to know more about Michelle and Lavinia, as well as several other sisters. Also, I have no idea what slow-burn romance is being referred to in the blurb because Michelle and Lavinia fell in love within weeks and had sex within the same time frame. That's not slow.

Yes, I know this is the first of a series and I'd like to give the next one a read but so much more foundation could have been laid or at least more background for our MCs.

This wasn't an unpleasant read or anything like that. I enjoyed it. I even liked that the sex was all implied. It didn't feel like it should have been more explicit since the story was about catching a rogue vampire. I mean, yes, we did get some background on the history between witches and vampires, but I guess I just wanted more. I suppose I'll have to wait until spring of 2026 to see how the next one turns out.

Big thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read a new-to-me-author!

So, where to start? Michelle stumbling upon Lavinia in an alleyway, only to be attacked by a demon, and resulting with Lavinia rescuing her and then whisking her away to safety. Except, there is always more going on that meets the eye, as you'd expect, and the chemistry between them is palatable from the start.

To be fair, they make a good pair, even if they take a while to get together properly (and for those to whom it matters, it's fade to black). That's not to say that things don't simmer between them all the while beforehand. It's cute and adorable.

It's an enjoyable read, a bit of mystery with plenty of action and pining, and we get a good look at the Sisters of Twilight and some of the other aspects of the supernatural society.

The vampire lore, though, is different from what you'd expect, and the rules as stated will have long term effects on relationships that aren't touched on in this story, but I do hope get addressed later in the series.

But still, I did enjoy my time with the characters, and it is a solid debut story, and I look forward to seeing where the series goes.

“All she wanted was to close that distance between them again, breathe her in, feel her skin against hers. But battle called, and [she] had a duty to fulfill.”

“Here [she was], like a drink of water to a woman parched of the good and beautiful.”

“I have seen how she looks at you, and it’s the look of someone who would tear the stars from the sky if she thought it would bring you joy. She will worship you if you let her.”

Thank you to NetGalley, Nyx Publishing and of course Celia Thorn for giving me an ARC.

I loved everything about this book, honestly. I loved that the whole vampire thing was done a bit differently, sure, everyone loves a good "vampires can't eat garlic" trope, and the whole "vampires hate humans" but this was refreshing, a different and good take on vampires and human relationships.

The characters themselves felt different, no character felt the same, no repeated personalities, and well thought of descriptions of their appearances.

And the actual plot itself was good and wasn't just pushed into the background for romance. Amazing book.

I like the story, the characters, and the writing style but it all felt a bit two dimensional, like it wasn't fully fledged out. I wish there would've been more details, maybe a bit more about the yearning and pining and why they fell for each other and the bad guy of the story was very cartoony. I was missing the motive. I think there could've been added a lot more but it was still a fun read. I enjoyed it and I think I will also read the next installment in the series.

A cute sapphic romance with a vampire, but it lost steam towards the end as the non-romance part of the plot was not very interesting.

A sweet sapphic story about a vampire Sister of the Twilight and a human nurse, who find their lives entangled one night during a demon attack.

I did wish the worldbuilding and secondary characters were a bit more fleshed out and that the main (and perhaps only) mystery was not left unexplained, perhaps to entice the reader towards upcoming sequels.

Such depth isn't really what the book is about though. It's about how caring sword lesbians are hot, and that's something I can definitely get behind.

“Don't ever apologize for being afraid. Our fear protects us.”

I love vampire stories and have read way too many of them. But I don't think I've ever read one quite like this. Most vampire leads usually fall into one of two categories: either they are a hot tortured soul that rejects their nature, or they are dangerous and borderline evil (still sexy). I love both kinds, even if I do lean more to the second kind. Lavinia doesn't match any of these tropes. She is strong and powerful, and she does not reject what it means to be a vampire. But she is also caring, with a soft spot for humanity.

Michelle is not your typical MMC either. She is ordinary. Not in a “thought she was normal but is actually some sort of chosen one” way. She just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In fact, her being a normal woman contributes to the story, since her nursing skills are a way she can give back to those who protected her.

I am obsessed with Celia Thorn’s writing. She embodies the mantra of “show, don’t tell.” There is very little exposition, with the way that the characters interact with the world providing meaningful insight into their personalities. Lavinia’s choice of the decor is a great example, as is Michelle’s connection to her mother. I also appreciate how easy the fight sequences were to follow, as well as the vampires not being all-powerful beings above all stakes (pun intended haha).

The sapphic romance is obviously another highlight. The pining from both of them is wonderful to witness. I did think that their attraction to each other was too quick, particularly on Lavinia’s part (Michelle knows that she was horny), but I enjoyed the ride way too much to truly consider it a negative.

Something I wish to see more in the next book is a focus on the other Sisters. I felt like I could not really connect to most of them. But they, and this universe, are full of potential, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

⭐️ Paranormal Romance

My final rating is 3.25 ⭐️
It takes a 1🌶 rating for me (closed Door romance, fade in Black scenes)

Sword wielding gay vampires in a paranormal romance? Sign me up lol

This book follows Michelle, an ordinary nurse that finds a wounded woman on an alley on her way back from work. She then miraculously recovers and saves Michelle from a vicious demon.

Lavinia a centuries old vampire warrior is sworn to protect humans but there is something more about Michelle that makes her want to ensure her safety from whoever is sending demons to kill her.

To keep her safe, Lavinia takes her to stay with her sisterhood of fierce vampire warriors.

The book is the first installment to a sapphic paranormal romance series of interconnected standalones about each warrior sister.

I feel like this book would have really been better with a bit more time. It is rather short and thus tries to fit a lot while also explaining a lot of things since it's the introduction to the world. Due to the lack of time some plots seem rushed or incomplete. Like the mystery of the rouge that's attacking the FMC, and her relationship with the rest of the sisters that is simply not there and then suddenly it is.

I will say the book is entertaining and interesting, and I really like the relationship between the main characters. It starts really slow burn with instant attraction and then they start to know each other better.

It did start really interesting although a bit slow but the pacing improves a lot in the second half of the book.

I'm always in the search for sapphic paranormal or fantasy romance books and this was a really sweet short treat.

Her life overturned after stumbling upon a fight between a demon and vampire, Michelle is whisked away to the safety of a gilded cage. It’s a set-up as compelling as it is simple, much endeared by Michelle’s expertise as a nurse. And with its monsters established in the tenebris it makes for such a promising start. Unfortunately it just doesn’t manage to sustain itself.

There have been several reports over the years of network executives demanding that scripts be written for people who are only half-watching and unfortunately that feels like the approach Thorn has taken. That lack of trust for readers is evident throughout the book but that constant coverage doesn’t extend to its core relationship. From an instantaneous attraction that they spend so much time being confused by to a purported out-of-characterness (before character is established), it’s difficult to believe they’re so deeply in love. Even with some very sweet moments, the alleged intensity of their feelings comes across as untrue.

Fortunately the violence that brought them together provides solid scaffolding. With eerie factions whose interests are unknowable, and mounting danger as the bodies pile up, suspiciously close to Michelle, it’s absorbing. And it provides plenty of opportunities to see Michelle and Lavinia grow closer and support one another. While more could have been done to give depth to their relationship, they make good partners.

With thanks to Nyx Publishing for this advanced review copy. I leave this review volunarily.

I'm always on the lookout for a good sapphic romance, and this one did not disappoint! There were some neat twists on vampiric lore and not one but two strong female protagonists who can't help but find themselves attracted to each other in spite of the dangerous situation they're in. Although the beginning is a bit slow due to worldbuilding, it really picks up the pace near the end as Lavinia and her Sisters close in on their quarry. (Speaking of picking up the pace, I hope that Lavinia's mad dash in one of the final chapters doesn't permanently injure her hip. She was told not to overexert herself!)

Outside of the action and Michelle's general trying to sort out her situation as she learns more about the mysterious world she's stumbled into, there are plenty of sweet moments between her and Lavinia. Despite their initial attraction to each other, this is definitely a slowburn with a hefty dose of "this isn't meant to be" on both their parts. The wait is worth it, though! I love a good slowburn. One of my favorite scenes was actually an early one of the two of them watching a show together; Lavinia is so sweet and attentive, making sure Michelle is comfortable and getting her tea. It was so lovely and touching.

I'd recommend this to readers who enjoy vampire romance and are looking for a quick, enjoyable read that is sweet, not spicy, and has a nice dash of action mixed in.

Warlocks, fighting, protecting and good vampires, sworn sword vampire sisters, and a heartwarming love story about soul mates between human and vampire. It's all here!
Of course, it's a good thing when the plot is front and center, but the romance got going a little late for me.
It was explained naturally, and I really liked the vampires' nature, which was a bit different.
I liked Lavinia from the very first moment, and of course Michelle and their chemistry together. I thought the concept of the sword sisters was great!
Michelle is determined and strong-willed. Something Lavinia has to get used to and often gives in to, even though everything inside her is screaming for protection.
It would also have been nice to read more about their intimacy on the pages and not just leave everything to fate in the dark and to the reader's imagination.
But that won't be important to many, so I'm not deducting a star for it.
The book was captivating, the storyline well thought out, and it was a fluid and quick read.
All in all, a fantasy reading pleasure and a treat for all vampire fans!
Thanks so much for the ARC to the Author, Nyx Publishing and NetGalley!

Simply written and plotted, and quickly paced, this reads like a YA urban romance. Michelle tries to save someone from a mugging whose wound instantly vanishes and has no questions. She follows this woman home, is put into weapons training and told that her rescuer, Lavinia, and Lavinia’s friends are vampires. Meanwhile Lavinia is already in love.

Other than knowing she’s a nurse, I have no idea who Michelle is as a person, where she came from, or even who she was likely to have voted in the last election. She’s just a blank slate that I can’t get a read on her; Lavinia is a vampire and badass. That’s … her personality. It’s all just so fast. More than that, it’s so … bland. There’s no setup, just a statement of fact. Vampires are real, Lavinia and Michelle are in love. There’s a rogue vampire, a warlock, and witches.

The focus is on the action rather than the world building, and with the relationship such a forgone conclusion, there’s no tension between the couple. It feels more like I’m watching someone play with dolls, occasionally telling me what the dolls are thinking rather than being immersed in a book. I’m sorry, but this is a solid pass from me.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC.

This book was just okay for me. I appreciated the new vampire lore. It’s fun to witness new evolutions to a creature we’ve had in literature for hundreds of years. This book is definitely decent for a new author, and I’m sure she’ll only get better. I had a few issues with it that might just be me. It’s fantasy/horror (vampires and demons) set up in the “real” world. I usually really love when normal people in normal situations have to suddenly deal with some supernatural stuff. In this case, Michelle’s reaction to what unfolds before her at the beginning is (I know this sounds silly for the genre) too unbelievable for me. You see a hot woman fighting a demon…where is the shock? The inner dialogue was way too tame, and she adapted way too quickly. It took me out of the story. If you just want an easy read, this is fine. Personally I prefer something with more depth and buildup than this gave me.

it’s a nice book.

I’ll start by saying this is the first book I’ve read by this author not sure if she had other books. But this book is an okay read if you just need to kill some time. I will say there isn’t a lot going on in this book……. Spoilers ahead………I was expecting Michelle to be the key to something , maybe to have powers or to just be useful in some way but she was literally just the love interest 🤷🏽‍♀️. There was nothing special about her at all and I thought maybe she would be useful in the final battle but again no she was just useless….. even in the romance aspect of the book there was basically none, a few forehead kisses, two makeout scenes and that’s it, most of the book is them wanting each other but denying it. Like I said if you need to kill time I would try the book but there really isn’t anything that would make me recommend this book. Not sure if I’ll read the second book maybe sometime later.

A member of a sisterhood of vampire demon hunters based in the uk saves a nurse from a traumatic fate. This sets the scene of protection and a hunt for who is trying to hurt her. Lots of action and some romance this is an enjoyable read.

The story starts off quite slowly but does unfold once the action starts then the pace quickly speeds up. We are introduced into the vampire world which is quite different from the traditional vampires we know plus other supernatural elements such as witches.

My only real gripe is the lack of story surrounding Michelle, she was there to be the protected damsel in distress but I felt that there would be more story here with her as this felt unfinished, I think there maybe further stories but it just felt rushed in places.

Enjoyable read, thank you for NetGalley and the publishers for an opportunity to read. This is out on the 22nd October.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

I wanted to like this. The concept in the overall thought process behind it was good, but the execution was completely lacking. The first two chapters were OK but the third chapter I found my self skipping ahead because I lost interest.

The only somewhat interesting part was the history behind the vampires. It wasn’t your traditional vampire origin story basically. It took more than 2/3 of the book before we got to any type of romance.

I think the editors did a disservice to this author. It seems more of a juvenile book just in the tone in the delivery no granted I did have to skip a lot because it just did not capture my attention and I didn’t feel connected to the character and the storyline got very boring very quickly.

I am always intrigued by sapphic vampires, and The Rising Dark was not an exception. The world building and historical context of the vampires themselves were quite compelling and well done. I appreciate when authors put their own spin on a well defined genre, which thorn did well.

However the majority of the book fell flat. The romance between the main characters felt underdeveloped, underwhelmed and instant. I wanted more depth and understanding between each character and their motivations. The pacing felt rushed and half baked at times. Overall The Rising Dark was a compelling concept with intriguing plot points, which unfortunately felt flat with the characters and pacing.

Classic vampire romance story.
This book being sapphic is the most exciting thing about it. The gorgeous and gothic cover art set my expectations a little too high for what turned out to be a simple plot of finding a vampire that’s eating people and stopping it. A little more eloquence to match the genre or even a splash of comedy to make it more relatable could have breathed life into this dime-a-dozen story.

Lavinia isn’t very memorable as a love interest. Her interest in Michelle was clear the moment she started thinking “she smelled like flowers and cinnamon”, but there weren’t many cute moments between them besides bandaging a few wounds. The Strong Bond thing came out of nowhere and didn’t feel deserved.

Thank you to NYX Publishing for the e-ARC via Netgalley. DNF at 37%. Below is NOT an official review but rather an explanation to why I DNFed for fellow readers.

I felt like the world-building wasn't gripping enough and that it required the reader to be okay with discovering things about the world alongside the main character. For some books this may work, but in this case it did not.
In addition to this, I felt that the main pairing was under-developed and I did not feel that the way their relationship developed was organic at all. The fact that this is a vampire x SEVERELY clueless human pairing perhaps contributed to this.

This book wasn't the worst but honestly probably would not read again. Everything felt rushed from the meeting to instant love. There was no build up and no clear reason why these characters felt anyway for each other there was barely any interaction between the two. I feel like the lives of the vampire and witches could be interesting but we never go further than surface level understanding of them. There's a good base in the story I just feel like there needed to be more to it even the main villains reasoning fell flat.

Celia Thorn does a fantastic job in writing fantasy book, I really enjoyed the way the characters and world were presented and developed. It was everything that I wanted in a opening chapter in the Sisters of Twilight series and was glad it was everything that I was looking for and am excited for more in this world. It uses the vampire and other paranormal elements perfectly and had that feel that I was looking for and was glad it was so well done.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
