Miss Underhay #22

Murder at Midwinter Farm

Rate this book
A frosty country lane, snow-dusted Devon hills as far as the eye can see… and a local farmer vanished without trace. Can Kitty Underhay solve this chilling mystery?

Devon, 1937. Kitty Underhay is enjoying a crisp winter morning walk with her best friend, Alice, and her fiancé, Robert, who have recently bought the mysterious Midwinter Farm. The previous owner vanished one night, his dinner still on the table and the front door left wide open. But as work is carried out on the farm, a body is found in the grounds. How was the man murdered—and who is responsible?

Robert trusts the local police even less than Kitty does, so she is immediately on the case, with her husband Matt by her side. As the pair take the bull by the horns and begin to gather clues, several suspects emerge. Though he seems gentle as a lamb, is the victim’s son as innocent as he appears? Why does the local pub landlord have an axe to grind, and does his daughter seem suspicious?

The waters become muddied by a robbery, with valuable jewels stolen at neighbouring Seacliffe Hall. Is the thief also the murderer Kitty is looking for? Or are the two crimes entirely unconnected?

With the weak winter sun setting over the fields and danger mounting fast, Kitty and Matt need to find the killer, before they meet their own icy end in the dead of winter…

Fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey or Verity Bright will adore this totally charming murder mystery. The perfect treat for cozy crime fans!

This latest episode in the lives of Kitty and Matt takes place in 1937, in Devon, England. It is nearly Christmas and the weather is bad - snow, ice and fog are all mentioned plus lots of cosy log fires and hot chocolate.

Kitty's best friend Alice is getting married and her husband to be has been getting their new home ready. In the course of repairs the remains of a dead body are discovered. A previous owner of the house went missing ten years earlier along with the proceeds of a robbery. Are the remains his and if so where are the jewels? Kitty and Matt as Private Detectives work with Chief Inspector Greville to solve the case.

Another lovely book in this always interesting series. The character development is great and the mysteries are always entertaining. It is amazing that this is number 22 already, but I still hope there will be plenty more.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

It was Devon, 1937, and Kitty Bryant (nee Underhay) had just farewelled her grandmother from the Dolphin Hotel on her journey to her sister's for Christmas. It was a bitterly cold time, and Kitty's best friend, Alice and her fiance Robert, had purchased an old farm - Midwinter Farm - to live in after their wedding in the New Year. Alice had been sewing curtains and cushion covers, so Kitty and she headed to the farm to add to the renovations Robert had been making. When a visiting telephone technician made a gruesome discovery, Chief Inspector Greville was immediately on the scene.

The finding of a man who'd gone missing ten years ago started an investigation by Matt (Kitty's husband) and Kitty, as the local Private Investigators. Bertie, their dog, often accompanied them as they questioned, searched for people and generally made a nuisance of themselves. But after so long, would they find the answers they needed prior to Christmas, so Alice and Robert could live happily in their new home?

Murder at Midwinter Farm is #22 in the Miss Underhay series by Helena Dixon and once again I loved it. The characters are evolving this far along in the series, and it's exciting to see there are still plenty of plotlines for the author to follow. This one was close to home, fortunately, but I did notice that not once did Kitty go back to the Dolphin after Grams asked her to keep an eye on it ;) I wonder what she would think of that!! Mrs Craven was also involved in this one, as in the previous. I love this series and hope it continues for a long time to come. Highly recommended (but do start at the beginning!)

With thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for my digital ARC to read and review.

Kitty, Matt and Bertie, their loyal dog are investigating a murder from 10 years ago and a current one. As always, the story moves right along and doesn’t drag. As with the entire series, this book was lighthearted, charming and suspense. Delightful and memorable characters. Highly recommend. I look forward to reading the backlist and the next in the series.

I was blessed with an ARC. Thank you NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.

As always this was entertaining. Would have been a bit better if I'd read it shortly before Christmas though, when this is set (the Christmas of 1937 that is).

Maybe I'll count this as a belated Christmas read as I have not had one last year.

Another good entry in this mystery series. This time it's set right before Christmas, and Kitty and Matt are supposed to be relaxing, enjoying their one year wedding anniversary, and helping friends Alice and Robert set up their new house. Of course, a body is soon discovered and Kitty and Matt are once again involved in a murder investigation.

There were a lot of potential suspects for the crime(s) and while I thought I suspect some of the villains, the mystery still held my interest.

As always, delightful,,,

So far, I’ve read all 22 Miss Underhay mysteries. This one, just like the rest, kept me totally engaged in what was happening and how the murder was committed. Oh yes, as usual, there is a murder.
The timeframe of this particular novel is just Before Christmas, and therefore also close to the anniversary of kitty and Matt’s wedding. Within less than two months, kitties friend Alice and her fiancé Robert are to be married. As we know from a previous offering, Robert has purchased Midwinter Farm and has been working on it to make Alice a wonderful home, and a place where he can also run his business from.
Allison, it seems, is not quite comfortable with what will be her new home. She knows that 10 years earlier the owner of The Home disappeared and to date no one knows why or where he’s gone.
This is where our story begins… The previous tenant by the last name of Crabtree body has been found in the piggery.
Of course, kitty and Matt are asked to get involved in helping to solve not only the murder but also what caused the murder… Perhaps thieveries.
Come along, pick this book up and enjoy the read.

Murder at Midwinter Farm is another wonderful instalment of the Miss Underhay series. Much like the others gives us a great blend of cosy historical crime with a wintry setting which makes the mystery feel both festive and tense. As always on offer is a great mix of sharp plotting, gentle humour and loveable characters and as always, I found it very easy to lose myself in the world of Kitty, Matt and the supporting cast of characters.

The isolated farm setting adds a classic whodunnit vibe with plenty of secrets, tension and suspense with the added personal touch of concern for whether Alice and Robert will want to settle in their future home.

This is warm, witty and well plotted and is another high quality addition to what has been a consistently enjoyable and favourite series of mine.

Thank you as always to Netgalley and Bookouture for inviting me to be a part of the book tour for 'Murder at Midwinter Farm' in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read "Murder at Midwinter Farm" in exchange for my honest review.

This is the 22 book in the Miss Underhay mystery series. Ms. Dixon's wonderfully crafted characters make it feel like you are visiting with good friends when you read one of her books. As always it starts with several articles from the Torbay Herald newspaper. One article is dates November 1926 and talks about a robbery at Seacliffe House in Hillhead where Lord and Lady Massey were robbed of their jewels and silver. Case was never solved. The second article is from January 1927 and describes the missing Thomas Crabtree from Midwinter Farm in Hillhead. He disappeared without a trace before Christmas, with his dinner still on the table, dogs in the yard and all the doors unlocked. The last article is from August 1935 regarding the sale of valuable freehold farms and lands by Richard Kemble and Sons Auctions. Lot One: Midwinter Farm. Lot Two: Stone-built barns and outbuildings.

Our story begins in December 1937 when Kitty is visiting her grandmother at the Dolphin Hotel in Dartmouth. She is getting ready to leave to visit her sister in Scotland for the holidays leaving Mr. Cyril Lutterworth the manager of the hotel in charge.

Alice and her fiancée Robert Potter have bought a run-down farm near Matt and Kitty. Their wedding day is fast approaching on Valentine's Day. Kitty and her husband Matt Bryant run the Torbay Private Investigative Services. Often helping Chief Inspector Greville of the Torquay Police. We learn that there has been no new on the Redvers Palmerston Investigation. Chief Inspector Greville thinks he may have fled abroad, died or is in prison under a different name. Matt desperately wants to find him because he faked his death in order to avoid being sent back to the front.

Inspector Lewis who is not fond of PI's in general and female PI's specifically has requested to return from Exeter where he has been working hoping to be made Chief Inspector. We learn that there is a young lady that he is walking out with and it's quite a surprise to Kitty and her good friend Alice when they learn who she is.

While having telephone poles set at Midwinter Farm, a body is found in the old piggery. Is his death in any way linked to the robbery at Lord and Lady Massey's house? Kitty is not happy when she figures that her best source of information might be Mrs. Craven the former mayoress who seems to know everyone and everything that is happening. She is also quite pleased to rope Kitty into helping on her many committees.

Matt feels his eyes are playing tricks on him when he sees who he believes to be Revers Palmerston near the shipping office - is he trying to buy a ticket to sail to America? We learn that he has promised to marry many women, stole their money and jewelry and disappeared before any wedding happened.

The past and the present intertwine as Kitty and Matt untangle what happened in the past and link it to the present. They learn of illegal card games, stolen goods being hidden and fenced. As always they end up in great danger as they put the pieces together and figure out how everything is linked and help the police solve several cases.

As a reviewer, you meet any number of virtual cozy mystery couples. Some you like. Some you like but wouldn't want to spend much time with. Others? Uh, never mind. Fortunately, Kitty and Matt are one of those couples I think I'd enjoy spending time with. Well, murders aside. They seem to mesh well and are easy in themselves, always a plus. They feel like the sort of people we might know. True, they're not perfect and Matt is certainly still fighting his own mental demons left behind by the war. It's 1937 and they do seem to genuinely care about those who revolve around them. In this case, they're worried about how skeletal remains being found in the pig sty of Midwinter Farm may impact the upcoming marriage of friends Alice and Robert. Robert has been working hard at renovations and Kitty and Alice are hard at work inside when the remains are found. Who is it? Why is it there?

Actually, Alice is more concerned about any bad karma connected to the farm house than the who and why? Seems not everyone is able to deal as well with dead bodies being found practically in their own backyard as Kitty. Kitty is determined to allay those superstitious feels of the house somehow being cursed. I liked that she simply didn't tell Alice she was being silly but was supportive and even went out of her way to find positive memories of the house to help Alice's fears. All this while trying to solve the mystery of who that body was and why it was there?

Needless to say, this being a small town, gossip flew and there were several potential suspects, even the man's family members. How could a long missing man be connected to a robbery? Or, is it even connected? Not sharing any more of the plot. As usual, it was fun to go back in time to 1937 Devon and be reminded that while some things change, everything doesn't. Good friends are there for you, even if they may not buy into your superstitions. Instead, even while delving into whodunit, Kitty and Matt both try to soothe Alice's fears.

Bottom line, I enjoyed my time spent with Matt and Kitty. While I haven't quite been with this series from the beginning, it's been fun to watch them grown both individually and as a couple. Matt's PTSD symptoms (did it even have a name back then?) help remind us he/they are "real", not perfect but trying their best. Watching them evolve as time passes has been great. Thanks #Bookouture for letting me time travel for an early peek at what's going on in their world.

Kitty Underhay-Bryant and Captain Matt Bryant are back with a cold case to solve this time. Kitty's friend Alice is getting married and her fiancé, Robert, has purchased the old Midwinter Farm at auction. He has fixed it up and they are getting a telephone line installed, when the workmen find a body buried in the old piggery. The body is identified as Thomas Crabtree, the tenant of the farm ten years earlier who disappeared one night. The case of his disappearance is reopened now as a murder and everyone questioned at that time is once again a suspect. Kitty and Matt offer to help as Alice is unsettled and not sure she wants to live in the house anymore. Prior to the death of Crabtree, there had been a spate of robberies in the area, and not there is a suspicion that he had something to do with them, perhaps even hiding the spoils from the last robbery in the house or on the property. Can Kitty and Matt figure out what happened and who killed Crabtree in order to put Alice at east, so she and Robert can still get married and begin their life together in their new home?

Once again, Kitty and Matt are working with Chief Inspector Greville to try and solve this case. This is the first time they have worked a cold case and it is not as easy to solve. Some of the people they want to question have disappeared and they have to locate them. Kitty seems to have a sixth sense about whether someone is being truthful, and she is right on. She does spend a lot of time trying to calm Alice and help her realize that the house isn't cursed. I liked how she seemed to accidentally meet up with people they wanted to question. There is also a side story about someone returning to Torquay, someone that Kitty was happy to see leave. I had some inkling of who might have been involved in the murder, but not the whole story. There are a couple of twists, and the investigation had me reading quickly to see who the culprit was. It seems Kitty finds herself in danger in most of their cases, and this was no exception. She does a great job of getting people to talk to her and answer her questions, even when she is being held at gunpoint. I enjoyed this story and loved being back in Torquay. I've gotten to know these characters and always look forward to spending some time with them. If you enjoy an historical mystery, then I recommend you pick up the Kitty Underhay series.

It’s the winter of 1938, and Kitty Underhay and her husband, Captain Matt Bryant, are looking forward to a quiet season—until trouble finds them once again. Her dear friend and former maid Alice is preparing to marry her fiancé, Robert. The couple will then move into the home he recently purchased: the picturesque but rather notorious Midwinter Farm.Though Alice was initially uneasy about the property’s grim reputation, she’s finally warming to the idea of making it their family home. That is, until the workers installing a new telephone line make a shocking discovery—a skeleton buried on the grounds.

Midwinter Farm’s dark past soon becomes impossible to ignore. Whispers of tragedy, a missing man, and tales of deceit swirl around the estate. As Kitty and Matt, both seasoned private investigators, are drawn into the case, they uncover a tangle of secrets involving fraud, stolen jewels, and betrayal. The victim, it seems, was not well liked—and many believed he’d left the area nearly a decade ago. But as Kitty and Matt dig deeper, it becomes clear that his disappearance was far more sinister than anyone imagined.

Helena Dixon once again delivers a masterful blend of Golden Age atmosphere and compelling mystery. The snowy countryside, the creaking old farmhouse, and the undercurrent of unease all add to the story’s charm and tension. Kitty is as spirited and clever as ever—a heroine whose warmth and wit balance the story’s darker elements beautifully.

Murder at Midwinter Farm is a wonderfully atmospheric addition to the Kitty Underhay series—perfect for fans of Agatha Christie-style whodunits. Full of intrigue, period detail, and heart, it’s an ideal read for a winter evening by the fire.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Murder at Midwinter Farm by Helena Dixon is a Miss Underhay mystery, although Miss Underhay has been married for several years and is now Mrs. Bryant. She and her husband, Matt, have opened their own private investigative office nearby and were willing to solve nearly any concern, eschewing cheating spouses. Kitty’s grandmother is leaving for a visit to her sister in Scotland and Kitty’s friend, Alice, is preparing her house for her and Robert to move into after their wedding. They were there hanging curtains when the telephone engineer arrived to install lines and a telephone. That stopped abruptly when a body was found in the old piggery. This sent Alice into a tailspin as she had not been happy when Robert had purchased the property in the first place.

Matt and Kitty are clever investigators and they work well together. Their marriage seems to be progressing nicely: they get on well. Alice and Robert have been working hard to refurbish the house that had been abandoned. It was the perfect location, with plenty of room for the coaches Robert used in his business and close enough to Alice’s shop that commuting would not be a problem. Alice is superstitious and Kitty is working hard to help her put her fears aside; thus, she and Matt are investigating this murder from ten years earlier. Even in this small town, locating people from ten years earlier is no small chore. There are several involved, and then one of those is murdered. The bodies are mounting and Alice’s nerves are worse and worse. These are cozy characters and the setting is perfect. Good read.

I was invited to read Murder at Midwinter Farm by Bookoutre. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #HelenaDixon #MurderAtMidwinterFarm

Delightfully traditional cozy crime novel that perfectly captures the atmosphere of a 1930s English winter. The frosty Devon setting provides a wonderful backdrop for a mystery layered with classic tropes.

Kitty Underhay is helping her best friend Alice with drapery hanging at Alice’s recently purchased and renovated farm. Alice and her fiancé, Robert, bought the property at an estate auction, There’s a bit of superstition about the place because of a vanished previous tenant farmer who left the door open and dinner on the table and who has been missing for over 10 years. When the man’s body is discovered on the farm by a workman putting in telephone poles, Kitty and her husband Matthew, who are now private investigators, try to solve the murder mystery. Could it be that the murder is linked to a web of local burglaries at neighboring estates?

Lots of suspects in the mix as usual, with Kitty and Matt joining their old, familiar police inspectors as they snoop around and question some of the bad actors who might have been involved with either the burglaries or the murder, or both.

I like Kitty and Matt and now they are married in this 22nd book of the series. For being practically newlyweds, there’s about zero romance in the pages. Their relationship is so focused on their involvement in their probes and inquiries. As usual, the narrative is full of lots of details about their daily lives, food, tea, and their pets. Fairly predictable following the typical formula for this genre, it is still enjoyable to catch up with Matt and Kitty and the rest of the characters who populate the books. I’m sure I’ll keep reading the next installments though their lives need a little more personal spicing up and Matt needs some sort of therapy for his issues.

This is scheduled for my blog tour on publication for November 24, 2025. If you like historical cozy whodunits and mysteries set in the Devon area of England, this is a fun series that I recommend for its attention to detail and style.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Another entertaining Kitty murder mystery, this time a lot closer to home as her best friend's new home is housing a lot more than expected - namely, the body of a famer, who had mysteriously vanished ten years prior.

It did feel as if a lot of this book involved the characters driving around to locations only to either not find the person they were looking for, or have a conversation that was so short that they didn't get any info and wanted to talk to them again. Which resulted in more travel.

I wish we could have explored the theft plot more, its a shame we didn't get to go really into that, speak to the Lady of the house, get into the glitz of the diamond world, although it was also really fun to have a mystery that dealt with the working class, but decently so. The victims and suspects were different to your usual mix, and while some of them were very rough, plenty came across as decent as you would expect them to be.

It was still a lot of fun, great characters, great drama and great for anyone who likes this genre, it is a worthy entry to the ranks of the cosy mystery club.

Plus, the inspector stepping out with a young lady? That's a turn up for the books, it will be fascinating to see how that plot line plays out and if it has any baring on how he acts in later books. We also had a couple of breadcrumbs on the over arching story, interesting to see where that takes us and if we are ever going to have a book fully focused on it.

Kitty Bryant's best friend Alice is preparing for her wedding in early 1938, but, in the midst of a filthy winter, that seems a long way off! She is, however, enjoying getting Midwinter Farm ready for her and fiance Robert's new life together. Unfortunately, as she and Kitty hang new curtains, a workman discovers skeletal remains in the old farmhouse yard. No one had been surprised when the victim had disappeared without trace ten years earlier. He had been extremely unpleasant, often banned from local pubs, and was suspected of being involved in a string of unsolved robberies. Can Kitty and Matt set Alice's mind at rest, discover what happened before she abandons all her future plans, and help the police without jeopardising their own happy ever after?

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. I love this series, and even after 22 books, it still surprises me. No spoilers, but I was as shocked as Kitty by a discovery she and Alice shared; It definitely has great potential! The important part Alice played this time was very enjoyable, as was the chance to get to know the Bryant's housekeeper a little better. I am, as always, sorry to finish reading this latest adventure but will be on the lookout for book 23, next year.

Devon, 1937. Kitty Bryant & husband Matt are helping Kitty’s best friend, Alice hang curtains at Midwinter Farm which she and her fiancé, Robert, have recently bought at auction. The previous owner vanished one night, his dinner still on the table and the front door left wide open. But when the telephone engineer arrives & needs to fix a pole near the piggery a body is found. Robert trusts the local police even less than Kitty does, so the Bryant’s are immediately on the case. It also seems there was a robbery at neighbouring Seacliffe Hall just before Thomas Crabtree disappeared.
The twenty second book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own I’ve loved being with Kitty & Matt from the start. Another well written, engrossing cosy mystery & I thoroughly enjoyed this case. There are a few suspects but after a decade it isn’t always easy to find them but DCI Greville is helpful & he & the Bryant’s trade information. I loved how the couple gradually untangle events both past & present. There are twists & turns & I was left guessing until the dramatic climax. I also loved that we saw another side to I Lewis
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

This latest Kitty Underhay mystery is a thoroughly enjoyable winter read, set against frosty country lanes and the snow-dusted hills of Devon in 1937. The atmosphere is classic cozy crime — isolated farmland, a vanished farmer, and secrets buried beneath a seemingly peaceful rural setting. By this point, the characters feel comfortably familiar, which makes it easy to slip straight into the story without any heavy setup.

The mystery itself is easy to follow but still clever, with enough twists and red herrings to keep things interesting. I liked the way the murder investigation is intertwined with the jewel robbery at Seacliffe Hall, keeping you guessing about whether the two crimes are connected. It’s a quick, engaging read that moves along at a brisk pace and never outstays its welcome.

Overall, this is very much “as usual” for the series — in the best possible way. Familiar characters, a well-constructed mystery, and a satisfying wintery setting make it a reliable, comforting choice for fans of the series. Easy, clever, and quick — exactly what you want from a Kitty Underhay novel. ❄️🕵️‍♀️

If you’re craving a mystery that feels like a steaming mug of tea on a frosty day, this one’s a treat. Helena Dixon returns with another charming installment in the Miss Underhay series, and it’s everything you’d want from a winter whodunnit.

Set in the snow-dusted hills of Devon, Kitty Underhay finds herself tangled in a chilling case when a body turns up at Midwinter Farm—a place already steeped in secrets. With her husband Matt by her side and a cast of suspicious locals (pub landlords, jewel thieves, and gentle sons who might not be so gentle), Kitty dives into the mystery with her usual wit and tenacity.

It’s got all the cozy crime ingredients: a historical setting, clever sleuthing, and just enough danger to keep you turning pages under a blanket. Dixon’s writing is warm and engaging, and Kitty remains a heroine you can’t help but root for.

Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and anyone who loves their murder mysteries with charm, snowflakes, and a dash of romance.

With thanks to Helena Dixon, the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

For my copy of this brilliant read I say a huge thank you
As I share with you this, my honest review:

Alice and Robert have bought Midwinter Farm
They're hoping it will be their home full of charm.
A previous tenant disappeared years ago
No one knows where he might go.

When Alice and Kitty go to put up the curtains there
They never anticipated having a scare!
A body is discovered outside the pig sty
Who is it and what happened to cause him to die?

So starts the case that full of surprises galore
Linking his death to other mysteries and more.
Alice and Robert ask Kitty and Matt to investigate
As Alice needs it concluded before it's too late!

There's also new romance and old adversaries. too,
Along with a mystery involving someone Matt once knew.
Such a great addition to this series, I have to say,
I hope you'll enjoy it, too, some day!

Stolen jewellery, a gang and a possible killer
Make this wintry read a real chiller.
There's plenty of intrigue and mystery, too,
No wonder I highly recommend it to you!

Robert and Alice are getting their new home ready but a telephone engineer finds a dead body in the piggery when he is installing the line. Friends and private investigators Kitty and Matt are called upon to put their minds at ease by catching the killer...
Murder at Midwinter Farm is the 22nd book in the Miss Kitty Underhay (now Mrs Bryant) series of historical murder mysteries set in the 1930s.
Missing jewels and a missing man. One mystery is solved with the discovery of Crabtree's body but without any sign of the jewellery there is no clear motive or suspect.
Alice is worried about the body being a bad omen and asks her friend Kitty to investigate to put her mind at rest. Kitty and her husband spring into action despite the winter cold and isolation of the farm.
There are some mentions of long term plotlines that have been present in earlier books. However there are no spoilers and this book catches us up on the key details.
Murder at Midwinter Farm is an enjoyable cosy historical murder mystery.

Wow, Book #22 in the series! Kitty has come a long way from working for her Grandmother at the Dolphin Hotel. I appreciate that this series has evolved over time, as it had begun to get stale, and then took Kitty & Matt on trips and to different settings, and it has kept it fresh and interesting.

Kitty's friend Alice is really rattled by the mysteries surrounding her new home and is thinking about calling off the wedding. To keep things on track, Kitty & Matt jump in to solve the different mysteries, which include a disappearance, 2 murders, a jewel heist, and many characters' suspicious histories. Inspector Lewis is back with a surprising new girlfriend and no love for Kitty and her sleuthing. There are many suspects and Kitty can tell they are all keeping secrets, but isn't sure if the secret is that they are a murderer until the very end.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Husband and wife investigative team Kitty and Matt are back for another adventure in this long-running series set in post World War I England.

Kitty's best friend Annie and her fiance are fixing up an old farmhouse to move into after their upcoming wedding. Workmen discover the body of a man on the grounds of the farm. Since the previous tenant disappeared without a trace years ago, evidently walking out the door in the middle of his dinner, no one is surprised that the body turns out to be the tenant.

Kitty's friend is horrified so Matt and Kitty want to solve this murder as soon as possible. The dead man had lots of enemies and was involved in some shady dealing. Kitty is her usual intrepid and logical self and she and Matt are a great team.

These books have a good narrative pace and plotting and it's an enjoyable series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I have been enjoying the Miss Underhay mysteries since the very beginning, so I couldn’t wait to get started on Murder at Midwinter Farm.

This time, Kitty and Matt are investigating on behalf of her friend Alice. The story was an interesting one, the mystery made more complicated by the fact that the murder occurred 10 years previously. I very much enjoyed watching Kitty and Matt (and the police) put together the clues.

I was delighted by the setting, it was lovely to see Alice and Robert setting up their future home. Though I did feel rather sorry for them, discovering a dead body before they’ve even moved in!

As always, it was lovely to spend time with Kitty and Matt, and their friends and pets. I always enjoy the little glimpses into their domestic life too. It’s nice to see a fictional couple who are happy together.

Overall, this was an excellent mystery, and kept me entertained for hours.

I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Book 22 returns to Devon, this time mostly set in and around Kingswear and Coleton Fishacre, where Alice and Robert have bought a farm and are doing it up before their wedding. When installing a new telephone line, the body of a man is found - former occupant of the farm, who went missing 10 years before, around the time that a string of local robberies happened…

We don’t spend much time in Dartmouth or the Dolphin hotel, so there’s only a brief hello to Grams at the beginning, and a few cameos by Mrs Craven. But I appreciated seeing more of Alice, and how she’s grown. Hopefully the next book will feature Alice and Robert’s wedding/honeymoon?

This is a nice cosy historical mystery and will appeal to fans of the series as well as new readers I think.

I received a free ARC copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers in return for an unbiased review.

In Devon, 1937, Kitty Underhay enjoys a winter walk with her friend Alice and fiancé Robert, who have just bought Midwinter Farm, a place where the previous owner mysteriously vanished. However, soon, a body is found on the farm, sparking questions about how the man was killed and who did it. Distrustful of the local police, Kitty and her husband Matt investigate, uncovering several suspects, including the victim’s son and the local pub landlord. As they explore, a robbery of valuable jewels adds to the mystery, raising questions about connections between the two crimes. Kitty and Matt must solve the case before becoming victims themselves.
A cozy well written plot that I enjoyed immensely. As it is the 22nd book in the series and the first time I have read this author I have some back copies that I am looking forward to.

The perfect cozy mystery for cold, snowy day! As this is my first Miss Underhay mystery, I was happy that it was so good as a stand alone. The story takes place in the late 1930’s , at Christmas time, in a small English village. Kitty and her husband Matt are the local private investigators in town. Kitty’s best friend Alice is getting married , but a dead body is found on the grounds of Midwinter Farm-the farm that Alice and her fiancée are fixing up for after their wedding.
This is the perfect blanket wearing and tea sipping mystery for a cold ,winter day. I look forward to reading more of this series!

MURDER AT MIDWINTER FARM is the twenty-second novel in the Miss Underhay Mystery series by HELENA DIXON. It is an easy and, enjoyable read with many twists and turns as Matt and Tilly Bryant of the Torbay Private Investigative services help the police solve a murder when a body is found buried at Midwinter Farm. The farm belongs to their friend Robert who has recently bought the place as a home for him and his fiancee, Tilly’s friend Alice. Is the murder connected to a burglary that took place in the area ten years before?
I am not going to tell you any more as I don’t want to spoil things for you.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bookouture. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

Another installment of Kit Underhay mysteries from Helena Dixon and the author does not disappoint. This is my second book in this historical cozy mystery series and I enjoyed it even more than I enjoyed the last one.
The characters are like old friends you wanna keep visiting and it was a delight to join Kit and Mathew Bryant on yet another murder-solving adventure. If you are looking for a well-written, low-key historical murder mystery with an engaging plot, this one is for you. This would work well enough as a standalone, but you'd enjoy it more if you are familiar with the series and the characters.
I thank Bookouture and Netgalley for providing me an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a fan of this series so I suppose I could be a bit biased but this is amongst the best in this high level historical cozy series.
It's atmospheric, make you feel the gloomy weather, the sense of dread in the isolated farm, the flawed and morally grey people Kitty and Matt meet during their investigation.
There's also the sense of community, family, and the Christmas atmosphere.
It kept me guessing as I wasn't able to find any suspects and loved the solution.
There's a lot going in the background and I hope to read next soon.
An entertaining and gripping whodunit, highly recommended.
Many thanks for this digital copy, all opinions are mine
