In Advent, we celebrate the arrival of Jesus. But in the midst of Christmas celebrations, we can forget a simple, essential Jesus came because we need Him.
Advent is about the light of the world breaking into the darkness—not after the darkness is gone, but right in the middle of it. The same is true today. Jesus comes to us in the reality of our lives, not in some idealized version of them.
In waiting and disappointment, he offers hope. In chaos and anxiety, he brings peace. In sorrow and emptiness, he surprises us with joy. And, in all things, he is love.
If you find yourself longing for the presence of Jesus in real life more than the sentimentality of the holiday season, I invite you to open the Scriptures and encounter afresh the light of the world. Advent is for all who need it.
This is a set of daily devotions to help keep Jesus the center of hope, peace, joy, and love that is the Advent journey. Each day has a thoughtful reflection on a different Scripture passage; most are traditionally associated with Advent. Sometimes it is helpful to remember the distinction between the anticipatory nature of Advent compared to the fulfillment that is Christmas. These reflections lean toward the former.
The subtitle was the first thing that drew me in: Advent for All Who Need It. In a season that was proving to be pretty “blah,” I was one who needed it—both this book and this season of Advent. It is well-written and thoughtful. I appreciate that this little devotional allows the reader to be melancholy, but also infuses the reader with hope (along with peace, joy, and love). This is a devotional that I will reread.
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of devotions centered around Advent. The week about love was especially helpful for me. The reflection questions were deep and helped me ponder how I’m applying scripture to my life. Highly recommend!
