Millie the real force behind the family
Review of The Ward Brothers Book 2: Vengeance by Carol Hellier*
Reading Vengeance, the second book in The Ward Brothers series, felt like stepping back into a world where loyalty is everything and betrayal comes at a deadly price. From the very first chapter, I could feel the tension simmering, knowing this wasn’t going to be a quiet continuation — it was going to explode.
One of the most compelling elements for me was Brian “Ramblin” the Predictor. He’s such an unsettling presence throughout the book. There’s something chilling about a man who at first seemed to disappear off the radar to finding him. His calculated plans to eradicate Tommy Lee and Millie hang over the entire story like a storm cloud. Every scene involving him made me uneasy because you never know whose side Carl is on. Brian's biggest mistake is trust. That constant threat kept me turning the pages faster.
Tommy Lee and Millie are at the heart of the emotional tension. Watching them navigate the growing danger had me genuinely worried for their safety. The stakes feel higher in this book because vengeance isn’t just a theme it’s a driving force. Brian’s obsession with wiping them out feels personal, and that intensity ripples through every confrontation.
The prison storyline involving John Jo and Sean added another layer of grit to the narrative. The scenes set inside are stark and claustrophobic, and you can almost feel the weight of the walls closing in. Their situation is a reminder that danger doesn’t only exist on the outside. Even behind bars, power struggles and loyalties continue. I found myself wondering how far the family’s influence could truly stretch and whether it would be enough to protect them in such a hostile environment.
But for me, the standout character in this book is Millie. She isn’t just a supporting figure — she’s the backbone of the family. While others may take on the visible fights, Millie operates with quiet strength and fierce determination. Time and time again, she proves she will do whatever it takes to shield those she loves. There’s a resilience about her that feels unshakeable. She doesn’t need to shout to command respect; her actions speak loudly enough.
Will PJ destroy his family with his lives choices.
What I loved most is how Carol Hellier shows that Millie is the real force behind them all. The men may believe they’re leading, making the big decisions, but it’s Millie who holds everything together. She anticipates threats, steadies emotions, and refuses to let fear dictate her choices. Her protective instincts make her one of the most powerful characters in the story.
Overall, Vengeance is darker, sharper, and more intense than the first book. It’s a story about loyalty tested to its limits and the lengths people will go to defend their own. As a reader, I was completely absorbed — angry at the villains, anxious for the family, and in awe of Millie’s strength. If this is what vengeance looks like for the Ward family, I can’t wait to see what comes next. Book 3 here I come!

Couldn't wait to get started on book 2 after doing a 're read of book one to get myself back up to date with the Ward brothers.

loving these brothers!
