After 25 years of marriage, Barbie Stopford thought she knew everything about her husband. Turns out, Eddie saved his biggest secret for after he died.
When a dusty legal document reveals he left her a hidden estate in Bakewell, England, Barbie does something that shocks everyone, including Shebooks two last-minute tickets and drags her reluctant daughter across the Atlantic.
Florence isn't thrilled—but after a summer she’d rather forget, a spontaneous trip to a storybook English village might be exactly what she needs.
The estate is grand. The locals claim it’s haunted. And the quiet groundskeeper seems to know more about Eddie’s past than Barbie ever did.
As the women uncover clues tucked between cozy garden paths and pints at the village pub, they begin to piece together a version of Eddie neither of them expected. And when Florence finds herself drawn to the groundskeeper’s son (who’s as kind as he is charming), it's a refreshing change from the life she's been pretending to live.
In this strange place, far from home, they both start to wonder if this detour was part of the healing all along.
Some inheritances come with strings attached. This one comes with buried secrets, uncomfortable truths, and the chance to finally stop running from their grief.

The story is a good one. I liked it. Like many other reviewers, it is obnoxious to split this story up into 6 books that are only about 80 pages apiece. You just get going and then have to go get another book. Why not just put it into one or two books at the most? Can’t imagine the reason for this. And it’s not like you can just walk away after any of the books. That’s like putting a book down less than halfway through and walking away. I would have given it more stars had it not been for that nuisance.
The possibly ghostly activity is increasing and Florence is still annoying. Emory seems like a nice character who has unfortunate taste in girls. The family legacy is slowly being revealed and it is not pretty. The writing is moving the story along and has a big cliff hanger at the end of the novella.
Who really had something to lose if the mansion is abandon? Walter? The city has been in the dark over the death of Clive and Margerett. Nobody sues like Sammy’s family. Who is watching the money???
Do you truly know your Family History. Truly look deeply into past generational trauma and find the a source and look for obscure insecurities and the trauma of finding your soul.
As the story of two Americans in the UK continues, the daughter makes new friends with local young people. the mother and her friend the seamstress grow closer. and the "heritage " of their in laws continues to raise tempers and surprises people.
Not reading or buying any of her books again. Only 80 pages, two chapters explained the previous book. You’re paying for a short comic book, she is no real writer. Everyone is scamming everyone on these books, disgusting!
