The Gods Veiling

Rate this book
Stay away from the gods.
Don’t go to them or Godsden searching for us.
Never enter yourself in the Veiling.

Those are the promises I made to my parents when they left me in the custody of their best friend and his son.
I’ve never uttered a prayer or worship to the powerful and selfish gods who sit in Godsden without a care in the realm for the rest of us. I’ve stayed far away from their joke of a “sacred” occasion known as the Veiling Day.
Unlike the rest of the Valorian Veil, I refuse to do the gods’ bidding to be given a chance to receive power that’s rightfully mine anyway.

My disdain for the righteous beings is deeply rooted—which has made keeping my promises to my parents simple.
Until a betrayal that cuts me just as deep as their abandonment upends my self-secluded life.
Turns out…plans have been made for me. Plans I want no part of.

Now I find myself standing with the very beings I despise—bound not only to their home, their way of life that I wholeheartedly disagree with, but to four men who are just as uncertain about this new predicament as I am.
My unwilling ascension has put the five of us in a situation none of us knows how to navigate. We have more questions than answers, and only one thing is clear…

The gods are using us.

Can we put aside our differences and learn to work together? Or will our secrets destroy us before the gods get their chance?

Welcome to the Valorian Veil. The Gods Veiling is the first book in the ongoing FIVE book series, so expect a cliffhanger each book until we get our well-deserved HEA. If you’re here for a slow burn romance and a plot driven, high fantasy realm, you’re in the right place. This content is intended for readers 18+. Please read authors note at the beginning of the book. If the eBook doesn’t direct you there to start, scroll back.

Five words to describe this book:

- BORING (as fuck. Literally and I mean literally nothing happens until 75% into the book and then it’s only for like one chapter and then it goes back to being boring as fuck.
- IMMATURE. ( these people are supposed to be 30 and 35 years old, but they literally act like and have dialogue like they’re 14 years old. It’s super cringe and really bizarre to be honest. None of them act like adults or even have adult conversations.
-OVERCOMPLICATED. (I mean, does the author herself even know what the fuck is really going on in this book? It was way overcomplicated and the world building and all the 5 million different phrases that sound alike and there was just way too much going on and it made me just not be able to connect with the story at all especially not with how boring it is. I felt like I needed a decoder ring and possibly a cheat code sheet. She tried to be original maybe, but ruined it by over complicating things.)
- BLAND. Yes, I am aware that I’ve already said that this book is boring which it is. But it’s also just bland even with all the overcomplicated world building and phrases and stuff like that, it’s still very bland especially the MMC’s. We get the cliché, autistic guy, the cliché darker one who only grunts as form of communication, the cliché psycho, who isn’t really psycho at all, but just immature, and then the somewhat levelheaded leader of the group. And even with the author using these cliché templates that are so overused when it comes to the MMC‘s characters, she was still able to make them extremely bland, boring and not sexy or hot or interesting at all.
- UNLIKABLE. And that’s not just the book itself but also the FMC and her weird attitude. There’s nothing really likable about the FMC and for me to enjoy a book I have to like the FMC. This chick is one of those “you can’t tell me shit” type of girls that the authors are writing nowadays that is just so eye roll worthy. Like we get it you’re bad ass and nobody can tell you shit not even your future partners. Eye roll. Another trope that is just getting so played out. And the whole situation with her adopted brother was just written so weirdly that I still don’t understand how it unfolded the way it did. It just jumped off and went to such a weird place so quickly that I didn’t really get it nor do I get why the author put it in the book like that it was just weird. Same as her straight guy best friend? I mean is definitely better than the cliché token gay best friend. But it was still confusing cause I honestly thought that he was gonna end up in her harem but he didn’t. He was just a best friend. I don’t know just a little weird story wise

I would not recommend this book and probably not the series. Which is sad because I did enjoy her previous series. I wouldn’t waste my time on this one if I were you it doesn’t have a lot of redeeming qualities except for the cool winged ancient animals that are in this book that I just forgot the name of . Those are literally the only cool thing about this whole book.

Hmmmm

I didn't realise this is the same author who wrote Source of Elementra till is was mentioned a few times and I was like hang on a minute. No there's no need to read the other book first.

My point is, the heroine is so angry about everything. Almost as bad as the other series, I couldn't finish the other series because I didn't like the heroine. There were parts where I was rolling my eyes at her antics. Thaylor is supposedly 30 years old, what I read was a 17 year old who wasn't house trained. I can assure you 30 year olds do not have tantrums at the smallest things. Nor do they behave like loose cannons. Simple life experience curbs these behaviours over time.

The good bits were that there is obviously a strong plot here and I'm here for it. I want to know what happens. I actually like fact that the book wasn't smut driven, it's a refreshing change.

I feel like we've barely scratched the surface with the MMCs but they are all different and present. Of course Riven is my favourite, always like the crazy.

Dear Willa
You have done it agian, just this time with a mouthy and funny FMC. I love Thayla from the start, she is my kinda of spirit friend. I been laughing so much of her, cursing jerks. Hit my head over idiots men that don't understand woman. And fucking shouting in joy when a familiar friend shows up. Can't wait for the next book!!

Despite the first messy 15% and cliffhanger (could we PLEASE stop splitting a book in several ones for the sake of it please pretty please) : overall solid 3.
Loved the fmc and the mmcs, who each had their own very regonizable POV.
I knew what I came for, and I had it.

2/5 Stars – The Gods Veiling (The Valorian Veil, Book 1 of 5) by Willa Rae

This was a definite change of pace compared to Rae's previous series. The concept of interconnected worlds is intriguing, and I usually enjoy a sassy FMC who can give as good as she gets - but unfortunately, this story just didn’t hit the mark for me.

I came close to DNF'ing multiple times. I laughed once - and honestly, I think that was more thanks to a little help from Mary Jane than the writing itself. The plot felt repetitive and monotonous, with circular dialogue and the tired “we can’t tell you anything yet” trope being dragged out way too long. It got old, fast.

The characters are supposed to be in their 30s - or immortal - but everything about their interactions felt painfully high school. The maturity just didn’t line up with the ages or stakes presented, making it hard to stay immersed.

And yet again, we get a story where the mates are known from the start. No mystery, no tension - just inevitability. Which begs the question: why stretch this out to five books if there's no suspense? It feels like the intrigue was stripped away from the FMC and the plot, leaving very little to stay excited about. Lazy and predictable storytelling.

The worldbuilding is there, but it felt overly complex - almost like it was padded for word count rather than crafted to enhance the story. Sometimes, less is more.

As for the MMCs? None stood out. I didn’t finish the book rooting for any of them. Even the “psycho” one wasn’t remotely unhinged - my cat has more chaotic energy than he did.

In the end, the book basically spoils the series itself: it tells you there will be a HEA, tells you how many mates she’ll have, and spells out the world mechanics so thoroughly that there’s no sense of discovery left. All of my excitement was drained by the end. For me, this series is a miss, and I don’t see myself continuing with it anytime soon.

This book is a classic example of an over built world. It doesn't happen often. Most authors make you figure out why physics isn't physicsing, or why everyone is delulu all by yourself. Not this author. She was devoted to sharing how every single door knob and kitchen utensil worked. She wrote the motivations of every character in full, and all the dynamics between every single person at length. She told us the h's (Thayla's) backstory, and daily routines, and all the place names, and those places proximity to each other, and ceremony names, and the ceremony schedules, and creature names, and the hierarchy of the gods, and the functions of their liminal spaces, and their magic, and their illusions... I could go on. But you know what she, oops, forgot? ANY connection between the h and the guys-not her guys-just some randoms named Creed, Amick, Riven, and Kyzen.

The h/H didn't even know of each others' existence until Chapter 10. Which is seriously shitty. A relationship with four men, that's four distinct personalities that's starting from scratch at page 110, just kill me now. And when they start to show a glimmer of respect for the h (of course it's after they see her fight for the first time in Chapter 17) it still isn't loving in the least. This book is the clearest example of the idea that authors can't write what they don't know. This author just doesn't understand how to write that intangible thing that binds people. Or how to transition them from indifference, to like, to love. This isn't a slow burn, it's a no burn. Nobody cares about Thayla, not even Thayla. She makes all the first attempts at honesty. She does all the forgiving and forgetting, even though she's had a crappy life, is alone in the realm of the gods (unlike the men who are brothers), and a little kindness is always free.

If you're here for the lore (a la greek mythology) then I guess this book is somewhat interesting. But IMO it puts all it's focus in the wrong place.

Absolutely Gripping from Start to Finish

This book had me in a complete chokehold from the very beginning. I sat down to read a few chapters and ended up staying up all night because I just had to know what would happen next. It is one of those books that grabs you fast and does not let go.

The story is incredibly well done. The characters are interesting, and well-thought out. Each one brought something meaningful to the plot, and their individual arcs kept me fully invested. The pacing was spot-on, and the plot itself was layered and compelling.

The worldbuilding deserves a special mention. It is rich, immersive, and clearly something the author poured a lot of time and thought into. The setting felt alive and full of history, and I enjoyed learning more about the different places and creatures as the story progressed. The magical system is still unfolding, and while there is a sense of mystery around how it all works, it never felt confusing or underdeveloped. Based on the way things are building, I am expecting book two to dive even deeper into the magic, and I cannot wait for that.

4.75*

This book is absolutely incredible. The world building? Chef’s kiss. The characters? Drool worthy (and yes, I mean Thayla, our FMC, too).

There is so much depth and so many nuances to the story that is being built here and it’s intriguing, exciting, nerve-wracking, emotional, and down-right phenomenal.

I laughed, cried, cheered, seethed, and was straight-up confuzzled while simultaneously cackling at Riven’s antics. I felt the full range of emotions in this book. And I really appreciate how each character (especially our MMC’s Kyzen, Amick, Creed, and Riven) has a distinct personality and skill-set, and I’m excited to see how their relationships with Thayla grow.

I look forward to the new adventures and the secrets being uncovered and all the wonderful happenings in the upcoming books.

10/10 would recommend!!

* I personally am docking .25 stars from this book due to a couple typos, and things I want to fix regarding clarity. It’s soooooo minimal though.

The first book in an ongoing 5 book series.
We get to know Thayla and the whole world of the Valorian Veil!
If you read the first series of Willa, you will have heard of this realm but you dont need to read the fist series to read this one, it stands on its own but there are some easter eggs ☺️
This series is a slow burn, high fantasy and plot driven reverse harem.
I really liked it. The world building is intriguing, the characters addicting and the FMC just plain cool.
I love how thought out Willas books are and this one didn’t disappoint.
I cant wait for the second one and what Thayla and the Gods get up to next 🥰

This book seemed interesting enough but I kept wondering why it felt familiar then I realized it reminds me of Jaymin’s Curse of the Gods series!

Fiery FMC is like Willa but not clumsy just a reckless mouth. The attendants are just like the dwellers. FMC get “tied” to a the Abandon brothers by a God just like Willa was tied to the Abcurse brothers by a God… of course the brothers are stronger than your average God due to their upbringing/birth.

The more I read the more similarities I noticed but it’s a little off putting because it tel lie a watered down copy to me. I’m probably going to read the next book in hope that it gets more original

Jaw-dropping!

This book has been a whirlwind of information and drama and attitude, I love it! Most books I’ve read that are like this are similar in how they make the characters and how they get their perks and other secrets in the story but this one was definitely a new approach and it’s been so refreshing. I will admit I did get confused at some points mainly the dialog and figuring out who was speaking but once you get familiar with the characters it becomes second nature. I devoured this book and I am SO excited for the next in the series!

loved it

I enjoyed it just as much as the Elementra series (I have done a re-read on that one)
I enjoyed the FMC because she a real badass but has real emotions. She fights for what is right and for her beliefs.
The MC'S are unique with each of their own personalities.
I love the fact Willa Rea's stories are intriguing and a bit on the complex side. Each chapter has a revelation and facts to keep at the back of your mind for later on!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent.

This book was an interesting read. The concept behind the story was fascinating and well thought out. I do have a complaint about the similarities behind the names of things. Lots of “v” names, and “gods” And the bindings got confusing too. But I was interested and invested. I’m very excited for book 2 I hope they keep it up. I do really enjoy the fmc thayla. And I hope they keep up with the character development in the mmc’s sometimes they fall to the wayside but this author did a great job continuing their growth.

I absolutely love this book. The world building is simpley amazing. I love when the main character also does not know what is happening around them so you are learning everything right along side them. The mfc is super sassy and tough which is super exciting to see always. The mmc's have such distinct different personalities that is always refreshing to see in a why choose romance. Bring on all the chaos and tension Willa Rae has not disappointed me yet and has quickly become one of my favorite authors.

definitely going to have to re read over

Once again you have out done yourself with the plot and really the cliffhanger you leave us with. I need the second book right this second woman. I took my time with this book bc I didn’t want it to end. I bow down to you with your twist n turns. The little things you leave like bread crumbs … ugh drive me insane but I absolutely love it.
I need to be an arc reader for you.

Good Read

I’ve been looking forward to the release of this book for a while and it didn’t disappoint. I love this new realm that’s being explored in this story and it took a while to get my head around it but boy did I love it once I did. I can’t wait for all the mysteries to unravel and find out how the story continues in the next book. I would highly recommend giving this book a read!

DNF 46%

I tried but well this book is so boring I kept falling asleep reading it. Not necessarily a bad thing when you have insomnia this book can put you out.

But the FMC- Dull. World- Dull. Plot— unsure couldn’t hang around to see what happens. MMCs— Dull.

Over all I didn’t really get the world, or the point. Did catch several good naps and didn’t even make halfway point 🤷‍♀️

Captivating story

This was literally a one sit read for me. I could not put it down. Especially as soon as I read the word Elementra and discovered it's just part of a book universe with the authors other series. This is all plot, detailed world building. The next book cannot get here soon enough.

By all the gods

I can count on one hand how many authors I've found who have written a god lore story and actually captivated me. Willa Rae has now been added to that count. I'm so excited for the next installment. I love unhinged Gods and Rivan is my new obsession. Like, how dare you make me fall in love.

out of my slump!!

I have been in a reading slump for the last two weeks and this book has revived me! I love the world building and the complexity of the magic system. As a first book, it sets things up perfectly for the rest of the series and leaves on a cliff hanger that makes me mad I have to wait until December to see what happens!

Omg we had not one but multiple emotionally intelligent conversations instead of classic miscommunication tropes 🙌🏻

We love to see it!

Although I do hope we see more of that side to Thayla because as a 30 y/o woman myself - the temper tantrums were getting alittle old

Also team Amick in case you were wondering 😌

Amazing

This was fantastic - I really really really disliked the gift from the tree series despite its raving reviews and doubted this one BUT it is excellent. The writing is so much better, not YA in the conversations between characters or the character build.

The world build and character development is wonderful.

Happy to conclude my 2025 with this amazing read.

Y’all I cannot even tell you how excited I have been for this book.

Willa Rae smashed this one out of the park. High fantasy, slow burn why choose romance, what is there not to love. I devoured this book in 24 hours and it was so so good. Now to patiently wait for book 2.
