A missing husband. A secret daughter. A past that won’t stay buried.
Kate has spent years living alone in her peaceful country cottage, long after her husband, Miles, vanished from her life. When she learns of his sudden death, she's not sure how to feel—relieved, free, or simply numb.
But then, a young woman named Amelia arrives, claiming to be Miles’s daughter. The child he never told Kate about. The child who may want more than just closure...
As Kate digs into her husband's hidden life, old wounds reopen and long-buried secrets begin to surface. Was Miles really the man she thought she married? Or was everything a carefully constructed lie?
My Husband’s Child is a gripping, slow-burn psychological suspense novel about love, betrayal, and the devastating power of the truth. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Adele Parks, and Shari Lapena.
Can you ever truly know someone—even after death?
My Husband’s Child is a gripping domestic suspense novel set in the quiet English countryside, where memories linger, and secrets refuse to stay hidden. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena, this is a haunting tale of love, loss, and the lies we live with.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 This was an easy and enjoyable read with a small cast of characters. The first half was a very slow burn but then it ramped up in the second half of the book. It was full of twists and turns, although you had to suspend belief a little at the end. Overall a quick but gripping read for a dark, cosy night.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book from the author, and can say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A really interesting concept, which kept you guessing from the start to work out who each character was, and who was telling the truth. An easy read, perfect for this time of year as you settle down to read on the darker nights.
The only thing I would have liked more was the ending to have been a little more tense, and perhaps a little more detailed. It felt like we went from high suspense to everything being wrapped up super quickly in the final few chapters. That could also be because I enjoy books with more gory details then most 😂
A great book, and I hope it does well for Allison Lee, I will certainly be looking up her other books.
Interesting story that builds on a simple idea, the main character’s estranged husband dies and it becomes apparent that he had fathered a child that she was unaware of. Kate receives a visit from a grownup Amelia who tells her that Kate’s husband was her father. Kate is suspicious of Amelia and has so many questions running through her mind. Why didn’t Miles provide for his child in his will, where did they live during Amelia’s childhood, what does Amelia want from her now, is she trying to get money, why is she trying to push herself into Kate’s life? As Kate continues with her solitary life as a now very wealthy widow, she keeps ‘bumping into’ Amelia and her mistrust grows. Kate tries to find out the answers to her many questions about Miles’ life whilst he was living away from her but little detail seems to remain, the house he owned is sterile and devoid of any personal touches. Where could she find the answers she needs? Eventually, she travels away from home to investigate then returns with finally some answers. I enjoyed reading this book from an author I haven’t read before, it starts slowly and builds tension steadily. For me, I felt there were a few times when it could have gone a little further and picked up a little more pace. Overall, I would recommend it and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
A fantastic book! Lots of twists and turns, I couldn’t put it down.
When Kate’s estranged husband dies and Kate is left everything in the will, she is surprised by the sudden appearance of his child. Unaware of her husband even fathering a child after their own struggles to conceive, this news opens a Pandora’s box of questions whose answers only seem to create more questions than before. As Kate learns more about her late husband’s child, her intuition tells her there’s more to this story than meets the eye…
The book itself is written in first person, which has been a change from the books I’ve been reading recently, so took a little while to get into. However it does provide an interesting take on the storyline, allowing you into every thought process of the main character Kate. You really get to take the journey of discovery with her this way. It’s a perfect book for those who really want to get to know the main character of the book, and for those who love to try and work out the mystery as they read. Would recommend.
Kate has been estranged from her husband Miles for many years though they have never divorced. She learns that Miles has died suddenly and she is the sole beneficiary of his will which includes a large mansion not far from where she lives. Kate is surprised when a young woman called Amelia gets in touch announcing that she is Miles' daughter. Amelia then always seems to be in the vicinity whenever Kate goes out and it's clear she wants to start a relationship with Kate but to what end? It seems Miles didn't leave her anything in his will which is rather odd as she was apparently his only child. Kate hires a private detective to find out whether Amelia is really Miles's daughter and in the meantime puts the mansion on the market. I enjoyed reading the book and liked Kate but found Amelia to be extremely annoying and doubt I'd have been as patient with her as Kate! If I have any criticism it is that there were rather a lot of over long descriptions of food which made me feel extremely hungry!
I do not understand all the 4/5* reviews for this book (some are very similar - I suspect a sock puppet). For a start, it needs a good edit. And how anyone can think that vomit would be travelling via the WINDPIPE…well, words fail me. The writing style is repetitive in the extreme; every shower, every application of makeup is meticulously listed. The plot is almost lost in the minutiae of the protagonist’s storytelling, or maybe it’s because the plot is very thin and needed to be padded out with so much detail. I read a lot of crime fiction and this is not a good example of the genre. I’m sorry to leave such a bad review as the blurb made the book sound intriguing.
I really enjoyed this book, the pace is a slow burn to start but then it really picks up and moves with the story line and the characters.
It's an easy read that's full of twists and turns and lots of suspense. It drew me in and i couldn't put it down.
I've read Allison's two other thrillers and I really enjoyed them and so was looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint. I'd definitely recommend. A great book to cosy down with.
I really enjoyed this book. An easy read with not too many characters. Full of twists and turns. Imagination required for the final chapter but the ends had to be tied up somehow and that is the joy of writing (and reading). Some may find this book too simplistic but I couldn't put it down. I will certainly read more from this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's gripping, easy to read, and just as you think you know what's going on, the plot twists and keeps you hooked. The ending was maybe a bit over the top, but I didn't mind because it was still a good way to wrap things up. My thanks to Bad Press and Allison Lee for giving me the opportunity to read it.
3.5⭐️ or a good 7 out of 10 read. For me this was a book of two halves, the first half was a very slow build up but the second half soon stepped up the pace. Overall I enjoyed this book and will certainly look out for more books by this author.
Beautifully written, a compelling, slow burning tale of what happened when you leave your past behind but there is unfinished business. Highly recommended!
Written in the first person it’s easy to get drawn into the mind of FMC who is dealing with the recent death of her husband. Although they had been estranged for many years he has always provided for her and now that he’s gone she has become a very wealthy woman as he left her everything in his will. However it soon appears that Kate had no idea about his life away from her so when Amelia appears at her door claiming to be his daughter she is a little sceptical. Amelia seems to be infiltrating Kate’s life leaving Kate wondering if her intentions are good.
This was a slow burn which did allow us to get to know Kate as a character and hearing from her in first person provides a unique insight. I read this in just two sittings as the story flows well. However her journey to the coast almost felt in real time as the chapters, for me, dragged out a little. As a reader I prefer something a little more fast paced but that is just a personal preference. There are twists and turns along the way, some I seen coming and some I do not.
If you’re looking for an intriguing read for these cosy autumn nights then I’d suggest giving this a
