May the Stars Have Mercy

Rate this book
Aphrodite Kerso is an engineering specialist aboard Apollo 1616, a scout vessel on a simple mission to investigate quadrants unknown to humankind. Unfortunately for her, they come upon a clearly abandoned, possibly haunted, research ship. Despite her best efforts to stop them, they enter the broken vessel. Only they’re not alone. There is someone waiting for Aphrodite on the ship. And he’s willing to go through everyone in her crew to get to his mate.

Awoken and confused, she finds herself on a new ship, one belonging to the mysterious hunter who carved through her crew then proclaimed she could claim her mate. Despite herself, she can’t help but feel drawn to the funny, charismatic Xexis of the Vrozkrowz. Along with her conflicted feelings over her ‘Fated Mate’, she must also face the reality that the stars are not what they seemed. In fact, there’s a whole Council of Beings that she had no idea operated in space. A working government of all space traveling people who aid, trade, and communicate with each other. One such organization that humans have been a part of for 50 years, and only a select few were allowed to know about. Until now. As the mate to a member of the Vrozkrowzian royal family, and leader of their hunts, she’s opened the lid to Pandora’s box.

All of that she might have handled…if she didn’t run into her dead crew, pretending like she didn’t watch them die in front of her. Something else is at play, something far more evil than political warfare and language barriers. May the stars have mercy on her…

ARC review
This book was engaging, dark, and moving. Aphrodite was grumpy and fiercely intelligent. She had to work through some serious trauma throughout the book and it didn’t come easily. Xexis was adorable and terrifying. He truly cared for Aphrodite and was self sacrificing to a fault. Their relationship was tender and primal all at once, and they had to deal with their share of hiccups and miscommunications because of cultural differences.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: Mass human death, hunted/stalked, blood, gore, major character death (of side characters), graphic violence, human experimentation (medical application of machinery to solve the breathing in space problem), puss, undead, capitalism being a bigger enemy than any space monster, grief, pregnancy, near emesis, body horror, death of parent, panic attacks, PTSD flashbacks, nightmares, political machinations

Miscommunication that gets resolved through communication...
But it takes a long route through Haile Selassie Avenue during peak traffic hours to get there.

“What on that ship screams to you that there is anything alive left on it?”

Aphrodite, knowing this horror movie all too well, booked it from the spot.

I understand that your species was quite…explorative? Is that the phrase? You like to be places you shouldn’t be.
(Ha!Ha!Ha!)

Chapter 1 to around Chapter 10 Aphrodite I loved. Proper, logical, competent final girl, STEM baddie who keeps you engaged. Then we got more into the Vroskrowz and all their name pronunciations, language etc and my head space wasn't in the mood and I mentally checked out from the story. There was so much world building, and I get the purpose and it serves its purpose but I found it overwhelming.

Great smut. A bit repetitive at times but still top tier alien dicking. Fucking HATED the term mating trunk when it was mentioned more than the initial two times it took to set up the joke.

“I would destroy the stars just to keep you by my side. Do not tell me that we are not capable of anything, for I will defy your logic if it means keeping your heart beating.”

Structurally, Xexis is based/inspired by the Predator villain from the Predator series (that I have never actually finished a film from (?) or maybe I watched the version that wasn't as popular in the series coz I know I watched something from that line). Technically his facial features didn't do it for me but L.S.' writing is so good you start imagining the cute pincer movements and it contributes to the overall hotness of his structure 😂.

Of side characters I loved Buddy as well as Reevar.

For me the story line was a bit 📈📉📈📉📈📈📉📉📈📉 that's why it doesn't have a higher rating and technically I had to finish this because I was past the point where a DNF would make sense.

Then don't use Americanisms/phrases such as "...we’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.”..." then have a setup where the human race is living in the stars and we don't celebrate Christmas/have religion. Like you are taking me back and forth between are we living in the future or a space advanced here and now?

So, overall, an okay story. Not bad, wasn't the greatest. I felt it had an outstanding initial setup, muddled through the middle then an okay ending that sets up the series.

This book is everything I expect from Lizzie Strong- funny, immersive, beautifully descriptive, and completely addicting. I laughed out loud, I cried, and I loved every minute of it. She has a real talent for weaving a universe Into her stories that sucks you in. This story in particular addresses human/non-human reaction to trauma in a way that feels honest but never so over-the-top that it makes you frustrated with the characters which is something I find can easily happen when touching on something like that in a story.

I’ve read most of her books (working on making it all), and this one sits in the same “horror” lane as How to Marry a Lich- gothic and dark, with just enough of those elements to keep you hooked (and this is coming from someone who can’t handle gore). In the intro, she mentions Alien and Predator as inspirations, and I totally saw those influences, even though I’ve never watched the movies I know the cultural references. As a Trekkie, I also caught a ton of subtle nods to classic Next Generation episodes, which I loved, but you don’t need to get any of those references to enjoy the story.

The main and supporting characters are all perfectly fleshed out and feel essential to the plot (special shout-out to Buddy). I highlighted so many lines, but the one that made me actually snort-laugh and perfectly sums up the book’s energy was:

“Oh, fucking hell… Fine, but if we die because of this, I’m haunting all of you fuckers.”

Five stars, hands down. I 100% recommend reading this. I received an ARC, but that in no way influenced my review. I started it the day before a two-day road trip and spent the entire 30 hours of driving wishing I had more time to read, then immediately planned how to finish it before heading back to work.

Expect classic Lizzie unhinged shenanigans but this time in space! I always have a good time reading a book from her and spotting all the goofy references and this one did not disappoint. I actually had not intended to read this book right now. The intention was to glance over the first few pages just to get a feeling for what was going on and come back to it later in the month, but suddenly I found myself chapters in. It starts off with our FMC finding herself in a very scary and horrific situation that had me hooked. I wish we had stayed in that intense, creepy feeling a bit longer because it felt like as soon as it started we were suddenly in cozy romance mode. But Xexis was a very swoony MMC. Actually all the male aliens are swoony. They want to romance their mates with all the gifts - even with a heart in a jar. Cause who wouldn't love that. And I was cracking up finding out the backstory to the beginning of the book. Lots of human/alien misunderstandings - which is a favorite trope of mine.

The story as a whole did feel like it was non-stop action and was a bit too much. As soon as they got out of one situation they were suddenly in another emergency. But I love a strong, badass female lead! And one in a STEM career no less!

There are lots of side characters to love, as well. Rexna was my favorite. They were so genuinely excited to learn about humans. Any dialogue with them had me giggling. Every time I hear "Merry Chrysler" now I will think of them.

And if you still aren't sure you want to pick up this book, I shall offer one more bit of information that may change your mind. Mating trunk.

I was so excited to see a Sci-Fi book by Lizzie Strong, especially with an alien who looks very monstrous. We’re talking the predator, with pincers, sharp teeth, 4 arms and super strong hunter. A dream boat for all us monster loves out there. Put together with the fact that he was basically a space prince who was absolutely devoted and besotted to his mate, eager to lead all the little things about her, he was a perfect MMC. You couldn’t help but fall in love with him, even if he was a little intimating. Soft and loving one moment and the next he’s chasing her down a hall way, manhandling her, holding her down while he takes what he wants. Aphrodite was also the type of FMC I always enjoy, smart, capable, a woman in STEM who basically says F it, and accepts her alien mate. Maybe a bit TOO fast, but can we blame her? I would probably fold like a land chair too in her position lol!

There was a lot going on in this book, a lot of world building, names, different alien languages, names and species, with a crazy plot and smaller plot lines to follow. I’ll be honest and say I was confused a bunch of times while trying to keep track of everything and everyone. After a while I got a better grasp of what was going one but my head was spinning at some points. That’s my biggest complaint, otherwise I enjoyed it! The special was great, I’m always a sucker for extra arms and there was plenty of rough bits and special equipment. I also loved the submissive scene from Xexis, it’s always a pleasure to see the big bad monster on his knees begging to please her!

Please note this is an ARC Review and the book was so kindly given to me by the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

I can not express to you guys how much I enjoyed this book. If you've known me for more than 5 mins you know I absolutely LOVE Lizzie's writing. I am so used to the monster books she normally writes that when I saw aliens I just couldn't help but be excited. And did she deliver!

I loved her take on aliens, space, the universe and how just wonderful all her characters were. Xexis was just perfect from the very beginning and I loved watching Aphrodite come into her own. The whole captain x mechanic thing just....ugh. I loved it.

Alien romance is one of my favorite genres so I really feel like I have seen a lot that's out there, and this had enough of its own flavor that it felt fresh and new. It gave a sense of action and adventure, and romance of course. (Our boy Xexis lovessss a good hunt!)

Also ... Where can I find my own Buddy? 🤣🩷

This book was an absolute winner all the way around in my book. If you're a fan of Lizzie's books, or aliens and this peeked your interest you should absolutely read it!

This is an exciting first installment in the Om1n0us N0m1n0us sci-fi/horror romance series!

Human engineer Aphrodite, the FMC, reluctantly answers a distress call on an abandoned spaceship with her less than competent crew. There they’re attacked by four-armed aliens, including MMC Xexis, who, unbeknownst to her, is her fated mate.

This epic story combines horror, sci-fi, and romance. I loved the homage to Predator, Alien, and other action/horror/sci-fi classics of the time. The political intrigue and interspecies drama were engaging, with excellent world-building. I loved that the heroine was very capable, and that the MMC gave her space to shine. It was also delightfully spicy.

Overall, this is a strong start to what I hope will become an exciting series. Several intriguing side characters stood out, and I’d love to see them get their own stories in future books.

Spice 4.5/5
Plot: 4.5/5
Writing: 4.5/5
My Enjoyment: 4.5/5

*** I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This kind of throws us into the story pretty quickly with Aphrodite and her team being thrown into a hunt that they had no idea about that Xexis prepared to get his mate, Aphrodite. The result is chaos, and well, a lot of unaliving people. But hey, he got his mate and Aphrodite has to understand what exactly happened since his species is different from hers, but at least he’s strong and handsome and makes her feel safe. And then there’s a bunch of other political intrigue that occurs throughout the story as well as a sentient virus that is possessing dead people and using their bodies.

This was a fun galactic ride! It’s humorous, the banter is fun, the romance is spicy, the mystery and adventure was chaotic, and the found family is adorable.

I really enjoyed this one! It was longer than I expected and had more to the story than just the romance, which I always love having that balance between plot and romance, not to mention being in space and the mystery tied into it was well done.

Definitely recommend if you want to read a humorous, spicy scifi romantic adventure!

Thank you to the author for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is exactly what it looks like, this is for those of us who pick Predator from predator vs alien.

Honestly though, I went into this not knowing what I was getting into and the intro ish to this book is a bit bloody and gory buuuutttt they end up being dream couple goals. To have someone love me like this would be wonderful. Monsters are just very so much better at respect and general care. Aphrodite is a very hot stem worker, buddy is a perfect Angel and Xexis is something else in the best way possible. This man will “hunt” his mate but also will make sure she’s happy and comfortable.

I’ve you’ve ever wanted to see a Predator on his knees this is the book for you. I would definitely consider picking this up, the spice is fantastic and the storyline will definitely suck you in. Also this is a mild amount of miscommunication at the beginning but right after they meet, wonderful amount of communication. Some different species/language issues but they talk through it!

Omg I am so excited when I came to leave this review I saw that it is listed as book 1… hinting at more books with this group of characters! I absolutely loved this so much!

I wasn’t sure what to expect because sometimes sci-fi storylines can get too technical and I get lost. This book was absolutely gold star! I was captivated from the exciting beginning that manages to inject humor into the mix at every opportunity all the way to the very ending where I can’t imagine a better outcome.

The building of the different alien races and their quirks next to the individual characters of the pack and Buddy made me feel like I was there and in on every steamy moment, every held breath and every half-out-of-context joke.

I have loved so many of Lizzie’s stories but I think this one tops the list!

~~ May The Stars Have Mercy ~~
By Lizzie Strong

This book was fast paced, dark, gory, romantic and thrilling!
Our Heroine was a grumpy, painfully intelligent, funny and strong willed engineer named Aphrodite. After her crew and herself go to investigate a broken down ship drifting in deep space, things take a horrifying turn.
Aphrodite awakes in an alien ship with a race of beings called Voskrowz, and a hunter that tells her he is her mate.
Unable to deny the pull she fells for him, except her fate and soon she will discover their is far more terrifying things in died space that the hunters her mate leads.
Thinks that remember, things that hunt back and things that always hunger….

I love this book the romance was perfectly balanced with the horror and gave a sense of urgency to the story. I was so worried for these characters and hope with each chapter towards the end that they would survive.
I highly recommend this book if you love romance and dark romance but have been thinking about getting into sci-fi or horror.
I think this would be a good gateway for both those genres.

WHAT A BOOK.
The beginning starts out with the horror aspects and it grips you into the plot pretty quickly.
Then theres so many twists and turns and I couldn't put it down!

I love Lizzie's take on aliens.
The politics and turmoil of different species is so good.

The spice was perfect as well.
I love primal chase scenes and we get lots of good ones 🫣🤭😍

But I also loved the moments of intense emotion and vulnerability between Xexis and Aphrodite.
They come together under some interesting circumstances but their love blooms so beautifully and I JUST WANT A DEVOTED ALIEN TO CHASE ME THROUGH THE UNIVERSE TOO 😭😭😭❤️

I am really excited to get more in this series because this take on aliens was so refreshing!!

This is one of my fav books of Lizzie’s yet! Her books are always just such a fun ride but something about this one just really clicked for me. I love that her books are generally instalove/fated and that there typically aren’t third act breakups, it gives all her books a cozy feel even if there are all sorts of shenanigans or horrors going on in the plot. Sometimes you just want all of the cute butterflies and none of the romance drama. It’s always such an honor and a joy to be able to ARC read for Lizzie.

Her writing transports and keeps me in the world of space. I love everything about this story, the unexpected romance that i needed as a fan of the predator movies it was giving. I also love the chaos, the showdowy mystery of space creatures. I was hooked from the start. The way they handled the miscommunication. It was funny at times, especially the Merry Chrysler 🤣 Don't even get me started on the spice. It was hot with hunting play.

I was hooked into this story from the dedication. I thought i was the only 12yo girl who maybe watched predator too young but also had strange feelings about the predators thick, muscular thighs 😂

This is such a fascinating new world. It had great pacing. I loved all of the characters (Buddy was the best). I will be impatiently waiting the next book in the series, Vivian has no idea whats coming, lol.

Aphrodite is out on a mission with her crew when they come across a ship 🛸 they go to explore against her better judgment. Things go very bad and when she wakes she learns the attack wasn’t an attack 🪤 but a mating♾️ hunt by Xexis an alien 👽 that is claiming her.
As this unfolds we find out many things that the human government has kept hidden from even their exploration space teams. Xexis and Aphrodite form a strong bond in the process.

Oh my goodness! I am in love with this book! It has taken over the number one spot in my favorite books! It was such an incredible read! And it was so so different than any other alien romance I've ever read! I love the predator theme through out! This book starts with a bang and grabs you by the throat and doesn't let you go until the very end! I wish I could read it for the first time all over again!

I really enjoyed this new world, seeing Lizzie try new genres is really cool and I fell in love with this one pretty quickly! I like that it’s a fast paced read but not a super short book, it always has something going on and there isn’t any dull spots. Buddy was the absolute star of the show! I’m hoping this series continues, everything is well set up and I’d love to see more!

First book I’ve read by this author and I’m hooked. This was so good! It had moments where it was serious, funny, smutty with everything in between. Predator, but make it a romantic meet-cute!

Xexis and Aphrodite have the most traumatic first encounter, but it all works in the end. I swooned each time Xexis got turned on by Aprhodite's intelligence and engineering prowess. She is the mind and he is the muscle--the perfect match. All the hunts, spicy and otherwise, kept me on the edge of my seat. I am so excited for more from the Om1n0us N0m1n0us series!

The author had me at horror romance hommage to Predator.

The story is a nice blend of romance, sci-fi and horror.
I loved the eerie vibes in the first part of the story and held my breath while Aphrodite and her crew were being hunted by Xexis. While the second part still holds mysterie, the focus shifts to their relationship development and Aphrodite getting used to life with the Vrozkrowz. The worldbuilding is excellent and the intergalactic political intricacies were engaging. What I appreciate about Lizzie Strong's writing, is that the side characters are fully fleshed out characters that add so much life to the story through their interactions with the main characters. This book is part one of what will be a series of standalones, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what's next.
