Reading The Summer Proposal felt like being trapped in the world’s longest Uber ride with a driver who keeps saying “oh my god that reminds me of this ONE story” every thirty seconds and then proceeds to tell you the entire bloodline history of a person you will never meet. I am genuinely in awe of how much random information this book managed to shove into basic conversations. These characters do not TALK. Nobody in this book has a conversation like a normal human being. Every interaction immediately spirals into a monologue, an anecdote, a side quest, a flashback, a life lesson, a family history documentary narrated by David Attenborough. Somebody could ask “how are you?” and suddenly we’re six pages deep into a story about a summer camp incident from 2009 involving a cousin named Derek who liked soup too much. WHY ARE WE HERE???
The writing style genuinely made me feel like I was losing my grip on reality. It’s so painfully overexplained. The author does not trust readers to infer a SINGLE thing naturally. Every emotion, every personality trait, every relationship dynamic gets spoon-fed through endless dialogue dumps where characters sit there explaining themselves like they’re being interrogated by the FBI. There is absolutely no subtlety. None. Instead of letting characters interact and allowing us to pick up on chemistry or personality through behavior, the book just has them outright announce everything. “This is who I am. This is my trauma. This is my emotional baggage. This is my entire personality profile. Here is a TED Talk about my past.” PLEASE. PLEASE JUST TALK LIKE PEOPLE.
And dear god the INFO-DUMPING. This author cannot let a scene breathe for even two seconds without cramming in another irrelevant detail or side story. Every character comes with a full downloadable biography package whether you asked for it or not. I felt like I knew what everyone’s third grade teacher smelled like before I even knew if the main couple could hold a normal conversation. It’s exhausting. Reading this felt like trying to scroll through a recipe blog where you just want the lasagna recipe but first the author needs to tell you about her spiritual journey with tomatoes.
And the dialogue??? Oh my god the dialogue. It’s trying SO HARD to be quirky and witty and charming and fun that it starts sounding like those painfully unfunny millennial commercials where everyone is laughing while holding yogurt. Every line felt manufactured in a lab. Nobody has rhythm, nobody has chemistry, nobody sounds natural. The author just uses conversations as a way to explain who everyone is instead of letting readers actually discover personalities organically. It’s all “this is the kind of person I am because of this thing that happened twelve years ago” instead of, you know…actual chemistry or characterization.
The FMC and MMC barely know each other and one of the first things she asks him is when he last hooked up with someone. EXCUSE ME??? WHO SPEAKS LIKE THIS. I had to physically put the book down because the secondhand embarrassment hit me like a truck. It’s giving two strangers forced to flirt during a corporate team-building exercise. There’s bold chemistry and then there’s whatever bizarre HR violation this dialogue was trying to accomplish.
And then we get to the FMC who had me staring at the wall wondering if I should maybe start a support group for women in romance novels who refuse to stand up. Because WHAT do you MEAN your fiancé literally runs off to another country without properly telling you, starts sleeping with other women, disappears into the atmosphere like a magician performing a vanishing act, and you’re still sitting there loyal to him like a widow waiting for her husband to return from sea. BABE HE IS NOT COMING BACK. HE DOES NOT LIKE YOU. THIS MAN LEFT YOU SO FAST YOU COULD PROBABLY STILL SEE THE DUST CLOUD.
And the craziest part is the book tries to frame this like she’s noble and emotionally devoted instead of making her look deeply unserious. At some point you stop rooting for someone and start wanting to slide them a pamphlet titled “Self Respect: A Beginner’s Guide.” Because why are you holding onto hope for a man who ghosted you internationally. INTERNATIONAL GHOSTING. That’s advanced level failure. He didn’t even leave the same ZIP CODE. He LEFT THE COUNTRY. And she’s acting like this relationship is still salvageable. I needed someone in this book to grab her gently but firmly by the shoulders and say “he does not yearn for you, he yearned for airport security clearance.”
And then enters the MMC who somehow instantly becomes obsessed with her despite the fact that the book gives approximately zero convincing reasons why. This man is immediately locked in for reasons unknown to science. But then his characterization starts glitching like a broken Sims expansion pack. And honestly the MMC suggesting a no-strings-attached arrangement while simultaneously acting obsessed with her gave me whiplash. You cannot act like she personally hung the moon and then turn around going “let’s keep this casual 😌.” Casual WHERE??? In WHAT universe???
What kills me is that the meet-cute actually WAS cute. Like genuinely cute. I’ll give the book that. For approximately twelve beautiful minutes I thought maybe I was about to have a good time. The setup had potential. There was charm there! A spark! Hope! I was ready for a messy fun summer romance. And then immediately afterward the book drove directly into a concrete wall at 90 mph and never recovered.
Every time I pick up a book from Vi Keeland, I’m surprised in the best ways. I always think I know what I’m getting, but then it becomes so much more. I absolutely love this story! I didn’t expect to be crying by the end 😭 You can’t help but fall head over heels for Max and Georgia. They are so sweet and endearing, with fantastic chemistry. Although they had plenty of obstacles in their way, they couldn’t give up on each other. Their story is different, fun, refreshing, but also had emotional depth, and I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
🎙️𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 ⇣ Sebastian York and Andi Arndt gave amazing performances. I love the way they captured the banter, humor, emotions, and connection between the characters. It was just a great time all around!

If I had a nickel for every time the mmc had serious surgery (e.g. brain or heart surgery) and instead of telling the fmc, broke up with her, I would have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

The Summer Proposal by Vi Keeland was the kind of book that leaves your heart feeling a little fuller when you turn the final page. At times, the story felt a bit cheesy and even leaned into some young adult vibes, which occasionally pulled me out of the narrative. But honestly? The heart of this book more than made up for it. What started as a light summer romance quickly became a story about love, healing, family, and finding your way back to the people who matter most. There were several moments that tugged at my heartstrings in ways I wasn't expecting. The emotional depth hidden beneath the romance gave the story so much warmth, and I found myself smiling, tearing up, and rooting for the characters every step of the way. This was the perfect summer read—sweet, emotional, easy to get lost in, and filled with the kind of romance that reminds you why you love the genre in the first place. And in the end, one quote kept echoing in my mind: "It was always you." (F Scott Fizgerald) That feeling is woven throughout this story and makes the journey all the more worthwhile. If you're looking for a romance that will make you laugh, feel, and leave you with a happy heart, The Summer Proposal is definitely worth adding to your summer reading list.
The FMC was set up on blind date w a “ average looking nerd” & when he walks up, he looks nothing of the sort. But, before leaving, he gives her a ticket to a hockey game, where she discovers he's actually one of the players. The two agree to spend one unforgettable summer together with an expiration date...
I loved this book. 🥹 For an instant-connection trope, these two actually had chemistry from the very first non-date(iykyk 🤭). Their banter felt effortless, and I was rooting for them immediately.
My only gripe? The FMC was such a strong, successful, independent woman, yet she stayed hung up on her absolute loser of an ex who wanted an "open relationship" so he could have his cake and eat it too. 🙄 Sir... be serious. Other than that little blight, Max Yearwood completely stole the show. Watching him fall harder and harder for her had me kicking my feet, and I couldn't get enough of them together. And the spice? Delicious. 😮💨🌶️🏒💕
I wasn’t a huge fan of the dialogue 😅 He said “Sexy as shit” and she said “Okay.” too much imo and a lot of it didn’t feel natural imo 🤷🏻♀️ This is likely just a me problem though!
But it did have me crying with the last 25% of it.
Synopsis was a little misleading and I struggled to move past that, I didn't necessarily enjoy the idea of Gabriel in the book. Otherwise, it was a cute and easy read. I just wish it matched the synopsis.
I absolutely loved everything about this book!! From start to finish hooked! I’m obsessed with the MMC Max and the FMC Georgia! oh and her BFF Maggie is the greatest! She needs a book! 5 huge ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and lots of 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ to go with those!
I absolutely loved this book. From the most adorable of meet-cutes until the very last page, I was hooked. It was fun and entertaining but also sweet and emotional. I did not expect to cry like I did. So worth the read!
this was horrible. this was oversharings final boss because how was this the most surface level characters I’ve ever met but they also shared SO MANY unnecessary details.

DUAL NARRATION ✨Purchased the audio/Listened on Audible
Every time I pick up a Vi Keeland book, I know I'm gonna get great banter, wonderful characters with fantastic chemistry and an emotional twist I don't expect coming. The Summer Proposal delivered all that and more. As usual, Vi pulls at your heartstrings. She's always able to hide a layer of emotional depth behind the romance that make her stories warm and leave you with a cozy feeling and I always end up loving her characters and rooting for them and their HEA.

After a disastrous breakup, Georgia goes on a blind date and instantly clicks the very charming and good looking Max, only to find out that he's not actually her date. 🫢 She later learns that Max is a professional hockey player and he cleverly invites her to his game. Sparks begin to fly and fly fast people! These two agree to a summer romance with an expiration date, no strings attached, this way neither one of them will catch feelings but naturally the more time these two spend together, the more apparent it becomes that these two belong together.
Georgia and Max try to keep things casual despite an undeniable connection and the summer quickly ending. But can they keep things casual? This story is filled with sexy banter, sizzling chemistry and plenty of heart that got me all up in my feels.
🎤Let's talk audio: Andi and Sebastian are such a great duo when it comes to narrating. They always deliver Vi's banter and humor perfectly and bring all the emotions and warmth to their characters. I always enjoy listening to them narrate Vi's books. They make Georgia and Max such lovable and relatable characters and I enjoyed every minute of this audio.
The Summer Proposal by Vi Keeland is a friends with benefits, love triangle romance that follows Georgia, an independent strong women who owns her own business that is successful, and Max, a hockey player in the NHL. Georgia’s fiancé decides to go to London to work without even mentioning it to Georgia, and tells her he wants to be in an open relationship while he’s over there. When Georgia talks to her fiancé and finds out he is, in fact, seeing other people, she decides to go on a blind date. In walks Max, charming, attractive, and the perfect guy. Until her real blind date walks in and Max is exposed. Before leaving, Max slips Georgia a ticket to an ice hockey game later that night, where she finds out he’s a player and not just watching the game.
This story isn’t like any other ice hockey romances I’ve read before (and I’ve read quite a few). It’s filled with drama, secrets and real honest feelings. The characters were so likeable and their emotions were so well written, keeping me invested in finding out what happens next! I genuinely couldn’t put this book down, wanting to find out how it would work out for Georgia and who she would pick in the end.
I love how honest and upfront Georgia was with Max about the situation, and when her fiancé asked if she was seeing anyone she told the truth. There was no sneaking behind backs.
A feel good hockey romance, that’s an easy read while still being so well written and keeping me invested.
“Be with the people you love, and your life will feel full in the end, whenever that time may come.”
The Summer Proposal sounds light and flirty, and it is, but it also includes heavy hurts that make the happiness all the more rewarding. —

𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑻𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑮𝑯𝑻𝑺: I seriously could not put this book down!! From page 1 I was having the absolute best time. Laughing, kicking my feet, blushing, tearing up, cheering??? All in the same book. One of my top reads of the year, EASILY.
Georgia can’t make a decision without analyzing it to death and I think we’ve all been there. I loved seeing her loosen up with Max and enjoy her life outside of work!! And don’t even get me started on Max 😍 he was such a funny, confident, CONSIDERATE, steamy guy and I can’t get enough of him. Their chemistry was off the charts from the get go and I loved seeing their feelings develop over time.
Those last few chapters really put my heart through the wringer though!!! 😭 thank goodness for a HEA 😮💨
I will be eating up this authors other books like they’re pieces of candy because this was fantastic!!
This book was adorable, had hard moments, wtf moments, and all the feels of reading really good characters fall in love ❤️
The 🌶️ be 🌶️’ing, but the absolute best part of this book was watching Georgia blossom and become a strong as woman, realizing her self worth and allowing herself to have happiness.
I cannot believe that stupid stunt her finance Gabriel pulled. Too small of a man to support his woman becoming successful, he’s got to hop to London without telling her and tell her he wants an open relationship? What a crock of shit. She should have dumped his ass earlier.
I can’t believe a man like Max would take her no strings attached offer, given how much he was into her. But, my frustration with him was short lived when his aneurism ruptured and he was basically on deaths door. I am forever glad that he came through and they got their HEA.

I read the first chapter and based on that preview, I bought the book. After the first chapter, however, I started doubting my purchase. The chemistry fizzled and the instantaneous obsession Max had for Georgia made zero sense. The dialogue was stilted and unnatural and the attempts at witty banter fell flat. Everything each character was feeling, thinking, or had done in the past was told through heavy information dumping, so I never got a chance to use my intuition or brain to figure out anything on my own. The sex scenes were very explicit and I normally would be fine with that when it doesn't read like someone's personal fantasies being told to me. If I hadn't bought this book, I would have stopped reading. This was my first book by this author and I know not every book is for everyone, but the writing is not for me.
ok i am very conflicted about this one. there were moments that i loved and ate up (4 to 4.5 star energy), and others i got an intense ick (1-2 star energy). So I overall settled on a rating in the middle because i'm conflicted. Here's a list of some of the things I loved vs didn't.
Loved: - their chemistry/banter - the side characters - his attentiveness towards her (most of the time lol) - the different adventures to add more to the story - the romance (when the weren't being stupid)
Didn't: - she was still kind of in a relationship - the lack of communication towards the end - everything about Gabriel - how fast we recovered from the third act situation and didn't really talk about it - her stubbornness
overall i still enjoyed reading this, especially because it was super fast paced, but just not a fav for me
Ok I picked this up thinking it would be a cutesy, mindless, summer read. It was cute! It was easy! However it had great plot, in my opinion! The end stirred up a lot of emotion for me, things that hit a little close to home; and while miscommunication or lack of communication is my least favorite book trope, vi_keeland did an incredible job facilitating the transition right back out of it. I also loved the stories they told each other , I saw someone rate it horribly for that, but isn’t that what building a relationship is? Talking about your life, experiences, hardships, dreams, etc.?? I love that the relationship building felt so realistic! I laughed, I smiled, I cried, and it sprinkled a little hope that whomever is meant to be will find their way to you. 💗
The Summer Proposal review 🌆🏒🌹 Vi Keeland books always give the best vibes and of course this one is no different. I absolutely enjoyed this one while reading on the plane last week! It kept me smiling and entertained from start to finish. Georgia and Max were so cute and so much fun to read about. A happen-chance meet cute where he falls first and harder? An independent and strong FMC? Plus the vibes of summer in nyc are lovely! While I think there was a little too much miscommunication I still thoroughly enjoyed the story! Highly recommended for a cute summertime read! Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Spice: .25
I didn’t really like this book. I like the storyline of it, but the fact that they both fell in love IMMEDIATELY and he pampered her, was a big no go for me. Also that they both fell in love very fast didn’t leave any excitement for the book. It was corny in many ways and childish in even more. The back of it sounded great, but the insides were really disappointing. I only read it because it was the only one I found interesting when I needed one in a small bookstore. I would 100% not recommend this book to anyone unless I know they like fast romance and love that could happen if you fell in love with a narcissistic, mental abuser.
Okayyy this was so cute!! i could so vividly imagine a perfect romcom movie out of this while reading 🥰
My only cons are wishing Georgia wouldn’t have put up with Gabriel’s “relationship preference” while he was away to begin with buttt I guess that’s just part of the plot lol. I got over it. The 🌶️ scenes weren’t my favorite as far as how they were written (acknowledging my bias and favor for romantasy / fantasy writing lol) but being that there were only a handful of them, it wasn’t a deal breaker for me.
Who wouldn't want someone to see you smiling through a window and just HAVE to walk in to talk to you and hope you get to spend more time with them and then actually end up together forever?!?
Georgia and Max's story, although slightly unconventional at the start, was beautiful. Max definitely falls first and wants to help Georgia with all the things that she wants to accomplish but only for the summer. Max has his own little secret that he is keeping to himself. With finding herself and what she really wants (Max, duh), will his secret be their undoing?
Reminding myself that this book has the FMC in an open relationship for the summer rather than breaking up with her BF, according to other reviews. (This book was originally self published and has been picked up by Bloom, who is notorious for publishing self pubbed hits.)
The cover is totally adorable, and the blurb is perfect. I was about to request this one on Netgalley, but I don't think I'm the reader for this story.
Standalone hockey romance? Don't mind if I do! While willing to look past the meet cute (because IT WAS CUTE), I was unable to look past other tropes used throughout (miscommunication, major illness, big drama with resolution in one sentence, traumatic background requiring ~self sacrifice!~). It was an easy, fast read, but not one I'll be recommending.
*Thanks to SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books and NetGalley for the ARC!*
Not recommended for fast burn readers, or readers who love 🌶 books. I was so disappointed with the 🌶 scenes, it sucked, there was no...🔥, the descripton that truly explain the chemistry between them.
Started off strong and executed the meet cute perfectly💞. But Vi lost me about halfway of the book, the story and events seemed too repetitive. Like there wasn't any something new to draw us into the book for the next half of the book.
This one started off very promising, great tension and build, but midway it sort of lost its focus for me and got too cheesy and cliche, the conversations seemed forced, and then the typical rom-com ‘problem’ happened sort of late, there was another curveball and then the ending sort of came quickly. The resolve just ‘happened’ so I finished the book a little disappointed with what I started off super excited about.
