Disappointed

I have read all of MJ Stratton's books and have enjoyed each one. She has a wonderful imagination and her writing style is outstanding. However, this offering is unlike her proceeding books. The idea for the story is different and somewhat unique, and I looked forward to reading it.

Having said that, I'm left confused by the lack of sense displayed by every character that claims to be intelligent. There are too many nonsensical moments in this to describe that left me shaking my head. The lack of editing spills into confusion for the reader and throws off the momentum of the story. I couldn't be more disappointed.

I'm not one to give away spoilers. Just because I feel this way doesn't mean every reader will. However, I do hope that Ms. Stratton can go back and give it the editing that it deserves. If the story is shortened by about 200 pages to remove the drag and "cleaned up", especially the 2nd half of the book, that would help the reader immensely. There were a lot of contradictions in characters being in two, or even three, places at once that left me so confused that I sometimes couldn't comprehend who was actually where and why. The timeline {is it still morning or night?} seemed off as well.

This review in no way means that I will not read another book of hers. I'm not bashing this author. She's an outstanding writer with wonderful ideas. I just think that the editor/s let her down. I really would like to see a reboot of this book as I believe I would be able to give this a much higher rating.

This pride and prejudice variation is utterly gripping.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is overhead being insulting about Elizabeth Bennet. For much of his life he would not have had a second thought.

However, his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam has recently taken him to task, regarding his haughty, prideful behaviour.

Vowing to do better, he quickly apologises to Elizabeth and the two become friends.

A friend is precisely what Elizabeth will need in the weeks to come.

Longbourn has long been home to the Bennet family. However, the once welcoming and bright house begins to fall under shadow.

It starts with missing trifles. The thefts of one half of every pair of gloves belonging to Mrs Bennet, seem mischievous rather than malicious.

Odd noises and footsteps in the night are unsettling, but in an old house with many servants, a rational explanation can be found.

Darcy and Elizabeth find out secrets in the history of Longbourn.
Their friendship turns to romance as they work together to resolve the increasingly alarming mystery.

This starts off as intriguing mystery but soon becomes disturbingly gothic.
Contains a swoon worthy Darcy and smart, rational Elizabeth.

Absolutely thrilling!

Had potential, but was boring and the characters indolent

The plot had potential... Weird stuff happens, they have to work together to solve the mystery before someone gets hurt, etc. But they never act! Even if some dismissed things, I would expect the main couple to be a little more proactive...
Word noises at night? Have a footman patrol at night
The housekeepers keys are locked? Call a locksmith
Someone was in my room? Maybe block the door with a chair, have the sister share bedrooms
You think there are secret passageways? Look for them, not just wonder about it for two weeks
Even if the father won't act, Darcy could have hired protection, or he and Elizabeth could have found ways to investigate the house... Walk outside to look for entrances, look for the house plans earlier
I had to rant to my husband about all this because it drove my nuts that things start to get dangerous and they're just like "I'm worried, I hope nothing bad happens" ugh!

It has potential though. More mystery, more action to find out what's going on, introduce the idea of the culprit earlier on, etc.

I love M J Stratton, but this work was a three-star for me. The very best part was the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. The “insult” occurred prior to the start of the book so E & D’s initial interaction in the book was a sincere apology and an offer of friendship. From there it was a delicious slow burn romance for the remainder of the book.

What I appreciated less: I felt the book was too long. The mystery was interesting, but rather dark. I understand the author’s desire to lay a foundation and build the mystery from benign to menacing but I found myself skimming at certain points and that doesn’t bode well for full enjoyment of the story.

As always, MJ’s prose is delightful and she draws beautiful word portraits. I think this book is worth reading and I am certain many readers will find the mystery to be exciting and novel. Definitely recommend.

Too long and repetitive

The author made a good effort to tell an exciting story, but I found that it could have been trimmed by at least a third and been more enjoyable. I enjoyed the three days Elizabeth and Jane spent at Netherfield the most.

I love MJ Stratton, but . . .

The premise was fine, but it played out in a way that was absolutely ridiculous. It’s a little difficult to lay out exactly how stupid these versions of ODC are without spoilers, but let’s just say that Darcy, when faced with a man in Elizabeth’s bedchamber, did not act. Nor did Elizabeth. Or anyone else. Despite knowing what they knew, they just decided, ahh, it can wait. Someone will probably be killed, or at least compromised, but I think I’ll worry about that tomorrow. Or next week. SMH. Enjoyed the first half, really felt frustrated by the second half.

A Wonderful Love Story

Wow! This story has so much to offer. There is a romance that flows so beautifully from first impressions all the way through to a marriage built on love, open-hearted communication and true understanding. Their love story provides a constant backdrop to all the other happenings and characters of Meryton and Longbourn.
We watch as the Bennet family and their household come to terms with the ‘Strange Happenings’ at Longbourn. The incidents grow from minor theft to events much darker and more threatening to all members of their home.
The tension and drama builds all the way to a chilling conclusion almost at the very end of the book.
I do not do spoilers but I recommend this book to everyone. It’s wonderful and, as always with MJ Stratton, this story is expertly crafted and the language is superb.

Great story, very well written. I liked the romance between our beloved couple, and was captured by the happenings in Longbourn until their resolution.

Interesting premise, but...

The story begins two weeks after the Meryton assembly, at which Elizabeth was insulted by Darcy. Small personal objects start disappearing from various places at Longbourn. After Darcy unexpectedly apologizes to Elizabeth for the insult, they become friends, and she confides in him about the strange and escalating happenings at her home. As Darcy's protective instincts rise in response to Elizabeth's distress, so too does their affection for each other. When Jane and Elizabeth spend some days at Netherfield, Darcy and Elizabeth learn some strange things about Longbourn's history that may have a bearing on what's been happening.

I like the premise. However, this story could have been told with half the number of pages, without sacrificing any integrity. The amount of repetition of thoughts and feelings, and the long descriptions of rooms, people, weather, meals, etc, was excessive and became tedious. I started skimming entire pages, and that's never a good sign. Of course, descriptions are necessary to enhance a tale, but this amount is over-the-top.

The romance is nice, but is buried under way too much verbiage. The usual villains are missing in favor of a new one, and it's a doozy. Although the writing is good enough, there's just too much of it. This isn't one of this author's better creations.

I loved the other books from this author but sadly i am disappointed in this book. The premise is very good and it would have been an amazing novella rather than full length book. There are lots of repetitions, timelines mismatch and very weird reactions by characters

There is very great danger to all the household and all the characters do is just discuss this. I mean if there is a man coming to a woman's room in the middle of night, it needs to be taken very seriously. But all the characters including the 'intelligent' ones like Darcy, Elizabeth and Mr. B just discuss these events without ant action. absolutely nothing for 80% of the book.

Then there are inconsistencies on how Darcy keeps switching between Miss Bennet and miss Elizabeth while addressing E. how same characters keep asking for courtship multiple times and how other characters react as surprised as if this is not clearly mentioned

I wish there was good editing of the book as it would have been great to read

Suspend disbelief for a suspenseful plot

There are some truly delightful pieces of writing in this story! The author knows how to paint a scene by invoking senses.

So what two stars? For 2 reasosns

1) The plot needs some serious willingness to set aside reason. Even Mr Bennet is not such a lacksadaisical parent to let things happen in his home without doing something.

2) Unfortunately, the ending had many continuity errors that made this a challenge to finish. The author seemed to forget who was where and when multiple times.

I almost gave up reading for these reasons, but I was super curious about the motivation that would be part of the reveal.

good premise but editing needed

Slightly intense story with lovely moments. There were some inconsistencies in the timing and storyline but overall satisfactory ending for ODC.

After he insulted her at the Meryton Assembly Darcy apologizes to Elizabeth. With her accepting the apology they become good friends. Therefore it is only natural for Elizabeth to confide in her new friend when strange things begin to happen at Longbourn. At first only little trinkets or food are missing but soon footsteps are heard at night and it becomes obvious that something - or someone - must be in the house, haunting the inhabitants.
Each day spent in Elizabeth’s presence deepens Darcy’s affection for her and when she tells him about the strange things that happen at Longbourn he is more than willing to help her find the cause. Together they try to find out what - or who - is haunting Longbourn. Meanwhile their friendship deepens and they both soon can’t deny the sparkles and flatters of love between them.
Will Darcy and Elizabeth uncover what - or who - is behind all these strange occurrences? Will they be able to put an end to it? And is the Bennet family in real danger?

The story was well written by the author MJ Stratton. I say only “well written” because the version of the story that I read (ARC version) had some repetitions of phrasings and some not so elegant sentences. The author has corrected some of the issues (and explained why it happened). I therefore will not count that against her because the story itself was a great one. The variation was captivating and thrilling, I was not able to put it down because I, alongside Darcy and Elizabeth, wanted to know what is behind all these happenings. The real culprit is not revealed until the end when Elizabeth and Darcy are able to find a final clue and encounter them.

I always love stories where Darcy and Elizabeth need to work together to uncover a mystery and find the culprit. Therefore this story was exactly to my liking. I love how they work together and in doing so get to know each other very well. With that they also get a sort of glimpse of how married life could be when they need to deal with problems.
This story was, furthermore, perfect for autumn and Halloween (I read it at that time) because it was a bit spooky. For a long time it was not clear if the occurrences were caused by a human or a ghost.

I really like the development of Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship. I like the trust that Elizabeth has in Darcy, that she is comfortable in revealing everything to him and that she turns to him in her unease and confusion. And that he is the only one she fully confides in. I like that, in return, Darcy shows himself worthy of her trust because he takes her seriously and tries to help her. And he tries to protect her in every way that is possible for him, even when he is not yet part of her family. There are no real misunderstandings between ODC, they only have to face outside forces together.

Bingley gets a rather prominent role while catching the culprit and I really like him for this and his bravery displayed there.
I did not fully like Mr Bennet in this variation. He is indolent as ever even when his family is confronted with danger and fear of bodily harm and his first real inclination to act is when Darcy gets matters in hand and intends to search for clues with Elizabeth. Before that he thinks about doing something but does not get it done.

There was one big villain in the story. They tried not to come between Darcy and Elizabeth but to intervene in the Bennet family's life. Fortunately the culprit was captured and, in the end, got what they deserved.

If you like to know what happens at Longbourn and how Darcy and Elizabeth are dealing with this you should definitely read this excellent variation.

I highly recommend it.

A great balance of romance and mystery

Could Longbourn be haunted, or is it something more nefarious?
Strange noises, items going missing, candles burning to the point of danger... These scenarios make Longbourn a tense place to live. But the ever intrepid Elizabeth investigates to find answers.

Darcy, apologises early on for his ungentlemanly behavior the night of the assembly, striving to become a better man. He and Bingley woo the two eldest sisters, as incidents at Longbourn escalate.

Our dear couple find interesting journals providing a previously unknown backstory. Obviously this is a very important clue!

Add Mr. Collins to the mix just in case things weren't stressful enough!

Bennet is his usual lackadaisical self, which he soon comes to regret when his favorite daughter is placed in danger.

It's a wonderful blend of falling in love and investigative suspense. This author has a sweet touch when it comes to the Bennet siblings. I really liked that the sisters, all fairly close to canon, still found ways to connect with each other instead of pushing one another away.

I did find it overly long and wordy. I felt this could have been tightened up to make the pacing faster.

Fun for the season

So, I liked this story and found it overall enjoyable…however I found myself a bit frustrated at the pacing. It was like a train constantly being stopped just as it was gaining speed.

The writing was good, not full of grammar mistakes, but there were a few places where the story didn’t quite make sense and I’m guessing it was an editing issue.

There were too many times the buildup of the relationship between ODC was inconsistent. I can’t exactly explain that, it was more of that start and stop issue.

I actually did like this book! The plot was different and certainly fun to read around Halloween. The mystery wrapped up nicely and I liked the characters, except Mr. Bennet’s indifference was beyond frustrating (and quite frankly unrealistic) in this scenario.

I wish this author would employ an editor and polish this up, it has awesome potential!

Strange things are happening at Longbourn. Items are going missing and sounds in the night. But things become more sinister and lives are threatened.
The mystery continues through until the last couple of chapters.
Darcy and Elizabeth reconcile very early in the book and develop a friendship that becomes more. Nothing inappropriate.

Mr. Bennett doesn't want to acknowledge that anything is happening even when the evidence is right in front of his face.
Elizabeth withholds important information. Things that might actually get his attention.
The whole situation could have been handled before anything bad happened if Mr. Bennett would have just put his book down or if Elizabeth would have just told him the facts. Everything was just "wait until later". The procrastination in this book was irritating.

I also felt that more time could have gone into developing D & E's relationship.

procrastinator Darcy

I’ve never known a Darcy—or a Lizzy!— who could procrastinate like this pair! Instead of anybody doing anything beyond moon over each other for pages and pages, the hauntings continue and escalate. Had they simply acted on information as they discovered it, the whole thing could have been solved in a week or two and nobody needed to die. But no, despite clear evidence that each incident was worse than the last and knowing what to look for, they all agreed to just wait around “for the right moment” or “until after the event”. The same went for Darcy’s courting, particularly his proposal. Good grief! I wanted to shake them.

The descriptive writing was good and there were relatively few editing errors. But this book needs a total reworking. Chop out a good 80% of the mooning about, give the actual investigation some momentum, and remember that only Mr Bennett is indolent, not ODC!

Longbourn is haunted

Mr Darcy quickly realize his error in insulting Elizabeth thus they become friendly early in the story.
Some very strange happenings are occuring at Longbourn and Darcy becomes Lizzies confidant.
Which quickly develop their relationship.
So at Longbourn strange noises are heard, things goes missing and even a mysterious figure is spotted. No place is safe even their bedrooms are haunted.
Mr Bennet is being his usual idolent persona, so he doesn't take the happenings seriously.
Elizabeth and Darcy investigates and dives into the Bennet familys and Longbourns history.
It turns out there was a fire, so the current Longbourn is not the original house.

Dive into the story to find out what is happening at Longbourn.

A little slow

This was the opposite of a horror film for me. Rather than yelling,"No, don't go in there," I was getting super angry that they. did. nothing. Like, look a little. I get a freaking spider in my room and I'm ready to burn the place down -- I wake up and find muddy footprints and a note on my open windowsill with an X on it? Hell, no, I'm not sleeping there alone again. Wtf. And this was weeks, if not months? By the end I was almost hoping they'd all be murdered in their beds. Lovely writing on the relationship of D and E, but the plot should have been tightened up considerably.

A Pride and Prejudice variation where after the Meryton Assembly Darcy offers his apology. Meaning that Elizabeth can confide in him about the strange occurances at Longbourn. Items that have gone missing and footsteps heard at night, enough to upset not just the Bennets but also the servants. Can an explanation be found or will the events accelerate. How will this affect the relationships beween them all.
An entertaining and well-written cozy mystery and romance with its cast of likeable, and varied characters.

A very original plot but far too wordy.

There is a very good book here with an interesting plot and well developed characters. However they are buried under far too many words. Endless descriptions of table settings and frocks. Some of this is good but this is a case of over-egging the pudding.

The behaviour of the characters also was a little odd - if you know there is trouble in the house why would they just keep waiting to investigate it properly. We appreciate that Mr Bennet is not the most decisive of characters but this went too far.

I loved the characters of Kitty and Lydia who provided much needed light relief. I also appreciate the dry wit of Mary.

Some of the timing went awry too I felt. Ms Bennet knew of the courtship taking place but then seemed bizarrely stunned when it lead to its natural conclusion.

Sadly this is a disappointing read - the author needs to take more time between releases to refine her best quality.

I didn’t want to put it down!

This most recent endeavor by MJ Stratton was a unique story while preserving essential parts of the original novel. I must admit I actually preferred how Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship developed in this story! There were clever clues throughout the story so that as I read, I had an idea of where the story was going but still had the surprise of the reveal at the conclusion. This is one I will add to my permanent library and look forward to Ms. Stratton’s offering.

Part of Darcy and Elizabeth Variations a very good A Pride and Prejudice Variation. The author skillfully crafts a compelling narrative, introducing unexpected events at Longbourn that add layers of drama, danger, and suspense to Darcy and Elizabeth's story. The plot is full of twists and turns, featuring elements of kidnapping, murder, and mystery, all woven together with a captivating romance. I was completely engrossed from beginning to end. It's truly a gripping read!

I very much enjoyed Strange Happenings at Longbourn. It was a very original and it kept me intrigued and engaged in the story all the way to the end. I liked Elizabeth and Darcy in the story and the fact that he apologises quite in the beginning saving us the suspense of when they are finally together, since they becoem friends and their affection and attraction grow as they spend more time together solving the mystery.

Another great book from one of my favorite authors, this time with a touch of mystery and some scary moments.
The plot was very clever, the tension increasing at a good pace. The author provided enough clues to guess who the intruder was, but it still didn’t take away from pleasure of reading about the final confrontation.
I loved how Darcy and Elizabeth worked together and relied on each other. A perfect story for Halloween. Highly recommended.

Well worth it

I loved this book. I appreciated the mystery with just enough possibilities to keep you guessing. Plenty of ODC page time with a Darcy that has already been taken to task for his pride pre-Hertfordshire. Mr. Bennet was frustrating but mostly all characters were decent with no one (at least the cannon characters over the top). Highly recommend.

A truly gothic tale

What starts as malicious mischief escalates into egregious violence as the Bennets are the targets of a terror campaign. Tension escalates until a gothic chase through ruined tunnels brings the mystery to its head. This is a lovely Darcy and a charmed Lizzy whose relationship is beautifully developed. Don’t read before bedtime.

I have loved MJ Stratton, but this one was a harder sell for me - and that it just because I am not that big of a fan of suspense/mystery plots. It does have more action than your average JAFF offering and if that appeals to you with a mix of ODC then this will be for you.
