Legends whisper of treasures in the Paris Catacombs, but the kittens of Caylor Academy get more than they bargained for when an ancient mummy pulls them into a dangerous game of riddles and clues.
To survive, Sheba, Buckley, Tank, and their new ally Ruby must solve puzzles carved in stone, survive traps that spring without warning, navigate eerie passageways, and face a mummy who will stop at nothing to free himself from his ghostly world. One wrong answer could mean doom—not just for them, but for the magical world itself.
Dark forces are moving fast, and one wrong choice could unravel everything like a frayed ball of yarn. 🧶⏳ Danger is closer than ever. The question is—can they solve the mystery before time runs out?

This was an enjoyable follow-up to the first book, and while it's not necessary to read the first book, I do think it adds to the enjoyment because you already have some idea of who all the characters are. That said, while I really liked the set-up with the kitties entering the catacombs from the Louvre to seek out the supposed treasure that was down there, I didn't like the constant squabbling that occurred between these friends, however realistic. There were many times when I just wanted the friends to open up to each other because then they wouldn't have been so easily manipulated. Still, I liked the addition of Phineas and the story of the catnip tea, as well as the realistic reaction of the parents when they were finally reunited with their kids.
Overall, I really enjoy this series and think that kids would love it as well, especially animal lovers. The stories are imaginative and well written and touch on topics of friendship, self-esteem, and family, and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Definitely recommended!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from BookSirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What unfolds when a band of spirited young cats collides with supernatural adversaries in the shadowy depths of Paris’s underground funerary labyrinth? A mix of intrigue, humor, and unexpected poignancy, far richer than one might anticipate from a children’s tale.
Karen Bitzer’s The Pharaoh’s Catacombs, the second entry in The Cats of Caylor Academy series, offers a brisk yet absorbing read. Five feline protagonists, each with quirks and flaws as vivid as any group of adolescents, must rely on cleverness and the unshakable bond of friendship to survive. Their adventure carries them into danger, wonder, and the kind of magical mayhem that feels instantly captivating. Historical touches, woven seamlessly into the narrative, lend an educational edge to the book’s enchanting blend of action and charm.
Comparisons are inevitable. Some readers may catch echoes of Harry Potter in the camaraderie and peril, while others will recognize the wry tone of James and Deborah Howe’s Bunnicula novels. Yet Bitzer carves her own imaginative space. Even those who missed the first volume needn’t worry, this story stands solidly on its own, thanks to the memorable personalities of Quinn, Buckley, Tank, Sheba, and Ruby.
Bitzer wastes no time tossing her band of misfit cats into trouble, and watching them claw their way out is a consistent delight. Each character resonates in archetypal fashion: Quinn, spirited and eccentric; Buckley, the thoughtful strategist; Ruby, bold and daring; Tank, ever resourceful; and Sheba, sharp-eyed and strong-willed. Young readers will almost certainly discover a favorite, a kindred spirit among the whiskers and tails.
Beyond its magic and mischief, the book respects its audience. It challenges as much as it entertains, delivering both excitement and substance. The Pharaoh’s Catacombs proves itself a children’s story of uncommon depth, one that educates, enchants, and refuses to underestimate the intelligence of its readers.
Bitzer’s latest entry in The Cats of Caylor Academy series delivers a magical mystery steeped in history and heart. Over the Crispmouse holiday, Sheba, Buckley, Tank, and new friend Ruby leave behind the comfort of Caylor Academy and descend into the shadowed tunnels of the Paris catacombs. What starts as a treasure hunt for a long-lost Egyptian hoard quickly turns into a desperate struggle against dangers far more sinister than they bargained for.
Quick and dynamic, the narrative alternates effortlessly between fun banter and gripping tension. The riddles are inventive, the magic crackles with energy, and every danger the characters confront sparks growth that feels both natural and profound. With a brisk pace that blends lighthearted camaraderie and edge-of-the-seat suspense, Bitzer keeps readers invested. Perfect for first-time readers and series devotees alike, this volume broadens the scope of the academy while telling a tightly crafted tale of courage, friendship, and finding one’s path. A magnifying adventure filled with both excitement and heart.
The second in the series "The Cats from Caylor Academy", The Pharaoh's Catacombs is another fun and engaging read. I didn't like this story as much as the first one for one of the main characters allows doubt and negative self-talk to undermine team unity. They squabble and fight more than in the first book -- which just wasn't my favorite.
Despite that, it is an interesting tale of kittens on an adventure. Middle grade readers will certainly enjoy the tale, as it is fast-paced and keeps you guessing until the very end.

This was a cute 2nd story to the Cats of Caylor series. It was a little faster paced then book 1, which made it much easier to read. The kitties were up to their usual high jinks and were absolutely enchanting. I hope there will be more in this series. These cats go on a big adventure in the catacombs below the Louvre. My only complaint is that it drifts a little from their mission, such that I forget what exactly they're doing down there or if it still matters. Also I was hit with many different personalities at once, and, not having read the first one, found them hard to keep track of. But they had an interesting time down there, encountered a mummy and some other characters, and lived to tell the tale.
The cats are back for adventure! Ruby joins Tank, Sheba, Quinn, and Buckley as they explore the catacombs under the Louvre. Are the rumors true about a treasure there? What about the rumors of a malicious ghost?
I love the teamwork and friendship that is shown throughout the book. Fast moving with a lot of adventure, I highly recommend this book.
