Five years ago, Claire Hightower ran away from the man she loved.
Freddy Hightower had once been her reckless a stolen groom, a whirlwind elopement, a future built on stars and scandal. But debts and dice chipped away at everything they had—until Claire fled with nothing but her unborn child and a fistful of pawnable jewels.

Now Freddy’s back.
Sober. Steadier. Still gorgeous and charming and chaotic—but also different. He’s returned to the Cotswolds for his mother’s wedding with an infuriatingly unflappable determination to win back his wife, his home, and his role as a father to the son he’s never met.

Claire isn’t handling it well.
She’s built a new life full of found family, sharp-tongued support, and exactly zero patience for handsome men with bread dough on their cuffs and cowlicks that match her son’s. But Freddy is relentless. Confident. Charming. And still so, so sexy. And he’s not the meddling heroes and heroines of books past are gathered around her table, judging gently—and helping themselves to pie.

Some love stories don’t start at the beginning.
Some start five years later, in an idyllic corner of the English countryside, unfolding alongside midnight banquets, whimsical summer games, and the second marriage of a woman who finally chose joy.

And some require a formerly estranged rake to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty, in more ways than one.

Goodbye, Earl is a second-chance Regency romance about flawed men, furious women, and the long road to trust. It’s the fourth book in the Ladies’ Revenge Club series and, while the story will make sense when read on its own, this one is best experienced when read in order. If you crave mature romance, found family meddling, slow-burn heat, and ensemble hijinks served with cherry pies and poor impulse control—this one’s for you.

I love a marriage-in-trouble story and I have to say that this is one of the best I've ever read. The build up to these two and their own story was so perfectly played throughout the first three books. When they met seven years ago it was love at first sight, nothing and no one else mattered which created a rift between them and those around them. Although their hearts were in the right place, it was definitely the wrong time.

I loved watching these two go from a hot mess to something solid and everlasting. Claire's fear of Freddy's return and how that would affect her and their son was completely understandable. The Freddy she knew was reckless, selfish and unstable. In fact, she was counting on this to justify her plan of sending him away before he could break her heart once again, or worse, their sons. But the man who stepped out of the carriage in all his golden glory looked like he wasn't going anywhere. Ever. And this is what she was most afraid of.

Freddy doesn't arrive to just put on a show. He's determined to prove that he's a man worthy of taking a chance on one last time. He won't accept anything less than Claire going all-in. Their sizzling chemistry is still there but I appreciated that Ava didn't use this to persuade Claire in taking him back. Instead, Freddy slowly woo's her with patience and space, honest talks, vulnerable moments and self-less acts without calculation.

Seducing Claire wasn't a tactic but the sparks that flew between them were hot enough to melt steel. All the longing, accidental touches, heart stopping eye contact, and breathless moments really drove up the tension so when they finally do give in, it's explosive! Cherry sauce isn't known to be an aphrodisiac but it should be!

This series was so perfectly executed and I think this is the best book by far. I loved how it was a reunion of sorts for all the characters. We get heartfelt admissions, necessary apologies, redemption, forgiveness, unexpected support and two whole people coming together at last. A beautiful story I hated to see end.

I was honored to receive an early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Seven years ago, these lobsters 🦞🦞 eloped at first sight, married, and roamed the continent until his gambling debts finally caught up. Pregnant and scared, her only option was to flee like a thief in the night, and leave her man to fend for himself.
He never got to see her or their son again... until his mother’s wedding.

Usually calm and collected mama Claire turns into a high-strung ninny as soon as her estranged husband enters her sanctuary, a.k.a. the family country estate and village she commandeered five years ago.
And Freddy used their time apart wisely; he sobered up, overcame his gambling addiction, learned to take care of himself, did some soul searching, discovered he had true friends – even if he never quite fit in – and, most importantly, he never gave up hope.

Standing stones, cowlicks, dimples, puppies, a midnight wedding and country Olympics.
A box of hopes & dreams – some crushed , some very much and annoyingly alive.
Pie cravings, cold rivers, restraint and cherry sauce seduction.
They love each other still, and it’s really just a case of him ravaging her ramparts – and other more pliable parts 😉

A fast-paced, witty, heartwarming romcom, this book is delectable in every sense of the word! But to get the full Freddy, you really should read the series; this endearing mess of a man is a marvellous work in progress, and it’s no wonder his wife can’t resist. On top of that he’s the most wonderful instant dad to his 5yo mini-me! So sweet! So adorable!!
The women in his family are a unique set of gems – I adore them! – and I especially loved that Claire doesn’t victimise herself. She acknowledges her part, and is woman enough to make the decisive move! And Freddy wouldn’t be Freddy if he didn’t turn grovelling into a sensual artform.

A brilliant read! I’ve had my fingers crossed for this couple since the beginning, and I was delighted by their well-deserved, hard-earned and long-awaited happy end!

This is my 12th book by Ava Devlin. I started reading her in March, 2020. I really love her writing. Her stories were great reads and I have loved her characters. She had quickly became one of my new favorites but she wrote a series that wasn't really my favorite so it's been awhile since I read her books.

I have to say I really loved this story. I loved Freddy and Claire and their story. Even though Freddy was a "peer" he surely didn't seem like it. This whole series has been so different from my usual "ton" books. These characters are hard working, trying to survive folks. I think this has been my favorite in the series so far. Overall this was a good read.

Claire Yardley elopes with her best friend's groom, Frederick Hightower, the Earl of Bentley, to the continent. Soon the gambling and drinking take a toll on their marriage and she runs away pregnant with their child. Five years later, Freddy, a changed man, returns for his mother's wedding and a second chance with his wife and to know his son.
A very charming rogue with a few unexpected surprises.
Mild descriptive sex.

"Goodbye, Earl" is book #4 of Ladies's Revenge Club Series.
This is not a standalone. You need to read this series in order to fully understand the background history of Lord Freddy Hightower, the disgraced Earl of Bentley and to appreciate the long path of his redemption.

The story of Claire and Freddy is long overdue.
We first meet Freddie and Claire right at the beginning of the series when he jilted his bride Dot at the altar to elope with Claire. But their marriage soon fall apart when Freddie’s gambling addiction spins out of control. After months of running from debtors through the continent, a pregnant Claire decides to leave Freddie behind and returns to England.

After reaching rock bottom, the only way is up. And Freddy has been pulling himself slowly up, earning forgiveness of those he wronged and building friendships along the way. We have been watching Freddy throughout the series change and mature so much and overcome his gambling addiction.

In "Goodbye, Earl" Claire is hosting Freddy's mother's wedding. She finally relents and allows Freddy to come to the estate she banned him from five years ago, when her son Oliver was born. They are still harboring feelings for each other. And Freddy is determined to seize this second chance at happiness and to do everything he can to stay home with his wife and son.

The way the story develops is so amazingly sweet and heartfelt. I love Freddy’s relationship with Oliver. I especially love the letter Freddie wrote five years ago to Claire. I love how Freddy and Claire finally reconcile and find their HEA.

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the 4th book in the Ladies' Revenge Club and absolutely you need to read the first three books to get the background and development of the characters involved in this story. Lord Freddy Hightower, the disgraced Earl of Bentley, started low and in disgrace in book 1, and has been slowing pulling himself up on a hard path to redemption since then, earning the forgiveness and friendship of those in his circle, who originally helped in his downfall to begin with.

Lady Claire Hightower, his estranged wife, has finally relented and is allowing Freddy back to his childhood home, and into her life, after 5 years of separation. But this, in her mind, is a temporary state of grace, for the sake of his mother, as she marries her second husband. Their marriage broke down when, during Freddy's spree of wanton revelry and gambling on the Continent, and after being forced to flee their growing debts, Claire realizes Freddy is not going to change, and she has more to risk when she discovers her pregnancy. She loves Freddy, but to with the thoughts of caring for her child at the forefront, she made the heartbreaking decision to leave Freddy and seek a way for a safe and stable future for herself and her child, back in England.

But now she must allow Freddy, however briefly, back into her life. What she is not prepared for is the new thoughtful, introspective, self aware Freddy.

A lovely second chance story about a character who has, through the previous 3 stories, managed to grow out of the childish, selfish creature he was and become a character that won my heart. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of their reunion, peppered with memories, but anxiety, loads of self doubt, and fragile fears for trusting again. They are surrounded by their friends and family as well, who all bore witness to the breakdown of their relationship, but also were fundamental to Freddy's growth and redemption.

A fitting end to the series, and glad to see the Hightowers' love bloom anew, with the support and love of those around them. YAY FREDDY!

Some second-chance romances are really about the couple. This one? It’s about the couple, yes—but also a man reclaiming himself, a woman learning she hasn’t stood still after all, and the found family who refuse to sit quietly in the background.

Five years ago, Claire Hightower left her reckless, charming husband, taking only her unborn child and a few jewels she could pawn. Freddy had been a whirlwind—bright with promise, but shadowed by scandal and late nights at the gaming table. Now he’s back in the Cotswolds, sober and steadier, determined to reclaim his marriage, his home and the son he’s never met.

The beating heart of this story is growth. Freddy’s redemption isn’t a quick fix—it’s been built over four books, with each step hard-won. We’ve seen him falter, try again, and finally steady himself. Claire’s arc is quieter but no less powerful: a slow walk out of the shadows she’s wrapped around herself, until she’s ready to be fully seen. Her guilt about taking Freddy back—and her belief she hasn’t changed—rings painfully true, especially for any reader who’s ever felt left behind by life.

Freddy and Oliver’s scenes? Devastatingly good. (I cried.) And every relationship—Freddy with Abe, Joe, Ember, even Patricia’s “weaponize the romance of a wedding” brilliance—lands with precision. This is an ensemble firing on all cylinders.

Goodbye, Earl is funny, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying. Not a standalone, but a culmination. And for those of us who’ve walked every messy, glorious step with these characters? It’s the ending Freddy (and we) deserved.

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy to beta read.

The story of Claire and Freddy Hightower who fell in love, married in haste and then parted due to his irresponsible ways. Claire ran away from the man she loved when she found herself pregnant and in drowning in debt, dreading the future for herself and their child. Freddy had been reckless and lost everything as well as, his wife and child. But five years pass and life is now steady for Claire and little Oliver. They have family around them and security. When Freddy’s mother is set to remarry he then comes back to attend her wedding and reconnect with his family. He is a very different man now and hopes to win his wife and child over. Freddy is more restrained and patient understanding the depth of what he has lost and trying to win a second try. Claire is scared and cautious. She’s built a new life filled with caring family who are there for her and although she still finds Freddy irresistible she is determined he will not break through her defences. But he is relentless and pretty soon he decides that Claire and Oliver will be part of his future. With help from some other members of the family and a new found confidence he sets about winning his family back. Read this endearing story of second chance love, you wont be disappointed. Freddy is a truly redemptive character who overcomes his shortcomings to be a man worthy of Claire his long suffering wife and their son.

Wow! To say I loved this book was quite an understatement! I've been waiting to see if Freddy would ever grow up, and he finally did. Ms. Devlin did a superb job creating such likeable characters--but as in life, they're not perfect. Freddy and Claire were both originally immature and selfish when they met so long ago. The things they did hurt so many people. Eloping as they did was just one example of their selfish behavior. However, little by little throughout the series you can see the ways they've changed and matured.
In "Goodbye, Earl" Claire is hosting Freddy's mother's wedding. Claire finally relents and allows Freddy to come to the estate she banned him from when her son was born. They are both understandably anxious and are still harboring feelings for each other. The way the story developed was so amazingly sweet and heartfelt. It was very nice to see so many of the loose ends get tied up and hurt feelings start to heal--by more than just Claire and Freddy.
This was a perfect resolution to the original Ladies' Revenge Club members--Dot, Millie, Ember, & Claire. I loved how it hinted at more stories to come! I'm excited to see more of this series and I truly enjoyed each book so far.

I was honoured to receive an advanced copy of this story and this is my honest review.

When we were first introduced to Claire & Freddie at the start of the series neither of these characters were what we would call likeable, Freddie more so, as this was due to the fallout of their actions.

Freddie eventually reached rock bottom with his lifestyle, this caused a pregnant Claire to leave him.

When Claire arrived back in London, with Freddie not in sight. The ladies who had previously been wronged by Freddie became good friends and gradually forgave Claire. As a result Freddie signed over his family estate to Claire and their son so they would always have a safe place to live.

During the years that he was banned from his family estate he knew that if he wanted to win Claire and their child back he had to turn his life around.

This is where Freddie's character develops into a character we genuinely start to love. Not only does he stop gambling he also turns out to be an amazing cook.

Freddie's ban was lifted when he travels to his family's estate for his mother's wedding. Whilst he is there he is introduced to his son Oliver for the first time. Much to the shock of everyone he is such a natural with him.

As for all the talk of pie......  this will make you hungry!

Whew I stayed up way late on my birthday no less 😉!
I could not wait to see what happened to Freddy! I watched him involve into a different person with all the other books before!
I wondered how he would mend what was so broken between him and Claire!
It seems like the pieces were scattered to the 4 winds! Little by little he starts pulling the pieces together with Oliver his spitting image!
Oliver who loves unconditionally as all children do!
Tommy who placed a bet on him? The world may never know! But pulling yourself out of the pit of any addiction is never ever easy!
To do so before you cause irreparable damage to a future generation!? Bravo!
Second chances are never easy! But when you purpose unbeknownst to anyone else if you ever get one there is no going back!! Ever! I hope I convey how emotional this rollercoaster has been!
How thrilling to see a man and woman who fell headlong into but never fell out! Bravo! Well done! PS There should be a hanky or Kleenex warming! 😭

All throughout this series we have watched Freddy Hightower, the Earl of Bentley, struggle with one thing or another. His heart was usually in the right place, but his foot seemed to always be in his mouth. Now we finally get to see him receive his happy ending, or in his case, new beginning. This story is filled with friendship, support, confusing and conflicting emotions, unsolicited advice and the actions of an adorable five year old named Oliver. Freddy has worked hard to conquor his vices and improve himself. All he needs now is the love and forgiveness of Claire, his estranged wife. Freddy’s mother’s wedding provides the opportunity for re-entry into Claire’s life and for all of the couples from the previous books to be present, reminding of the convoluted ways in which they are all related. This is a wonderful second chance story for both Patricia and Raul, and Claire and Freddy. Loved it!.

Fabulous second chance romance!

This is book four in The Ladies Revenge Club series and I loved it as much as the others! We finally get Freddy’s story…who was the “villain” in book one and has been on a wonderfully entertaining redemption arc ever since. While Freddy was “the bad guy” because he made some really stupid, immature and “spoiled brat” choices- he wan’t evil. Everyone knew he had a heart of gold at his core. He just needed to pull himself together and get a handle on his gambling addiction. What I loved about Devlin’s handling of Freddy’s recovery is how, while absolutely taking his addiction seriously, there was still a “lightness” to the book. And Claire’s character ARC is just as important as Freddy’s. She has grown into her own during their several years separation. Both Freddy and Claire were hit with the insta-love bomb and needed all the struggles in between their reunion to truly appreciate themselves, each other and their connection. This may be my favorite second chance romance! And Oliver, their son, is the BEST!!!!

Freddie and Claire finally get their story! I have been waiting for this one since the series started and it is GRAND! Watching Freddie change through all the other stories was so very special and his willingness to wait for Claire to come to terms with his return was beautiful. I adored how the author weaved the first three books into this one without giving too much away in case someone hadn’t read them yet. Claire was a bit of a snot in the beginning, but watching her realize Freddie’s change and grow was wonderful. Her discussion with Silas was priceless. I was a bit confused with Freddie and his mother’s conversation. Was not sure what was trying to be conveyed with the story she told. And, as always, the 4 star is for the f-bomb. Still don’t think it’s necessary. Otherwise, loved this story and Oliver made it even more special. I especially loved the letter Freddie wrote…a tender, tearful moment.

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Oh my goodness. Wow. This is probably my favorite Ava Devlin book & Freddy might be my new favorite character. I just love him and though I know he was a scoundrel at the beginning of the series, my heart broke for him. I have been cheering him on in the subsequent books in the series and hoping he would get his happy ending. I was so looking forward to reading this book and wow - Ava Devlin delivered. I could not put the book down. I cried many times while reading it - both sad and happy tears for Freddy, but also for Claire & little Oliver. Oh my heart. I adore these characters and love how everyone and everything came full circle. I just wanted to jump in the book and hug them all, but especially Freddy. He deserved this happy ending. What a beautiful story of redemption & love. This definitely deserves another read.

Well written, full of society, drama, love, romance, family, mystery, intrigue and twists. Claire runs away and marries Freddy on a ship 5 years ago. When his gambling issues catch up with him, she heads back to London. She is also pregnant , needing help. Freddy is put in prison for his debts and before Claire knows it time has gone by. She is living with their son in Freddy's ancestral home with his Mother and Grandmother. When he learns that his mother is to be married, he's not sure that he should go. He does go and realizes that his feelings for Claire never stopped. His Grandmother , Tommy, helps him find his way back to Claire and their son, Oliver. Has lots of action between them but they are able to find their way back to a happily ever after. Would recommend to everyone.

Taking a Second Chance . . .

Freddy Hightower had much to atone for in this story. He and Claire married and Freddy let his gambling addiction sink them both to rock-bottom, deeply in debt and struggling. There was finally nothing left to salvage and Claire left him to try to provide a life for herself and her unborn child, Oliver. When Freddy's mother decides to marry, Freddy comes back to attend the wedding... and to reconcile with his wife and family. He has put in the effort to change, but Claire may still have concerns until and unless he can prove himself. Can Freddy convince her that he is not the same as he used to be? Has he truly grown out of his reckless ways and is ready to take on responsibility for his mistakes? And can he convince Claire that he is ready to be a true husband and provider that his family can count on?

I am not a huge fan of second chance romances, but this one by Ava Devlin was really good and a very fun read. Freddy and Claire run away together after a love at first sight situation, but they are too young and really don’t know each other. Now Freddy is back in England and wants his wife and son back. I really like the lengths that Ms Devlin has Freddy go through to prove to Claire that he is a different man than he was back then and how he recognizes what he had done when they were first together. I must admit that I was pulled into this book by the title although I do like this author too. It was a very fun read.

Another winner

I am thoroughly enjoying this series, love the characters who are now becoming old friends. BUT a minor annoyance. The author is American, and the books are set in Regency England. In no way, shape or form does one ever 'make a plate' - in fact, we don't 'make a plate' nowadays! It's an Americanism that has to date not crossed The Pond, thankfully. And in the last book, Ember is holding a handful of bills. I naturally assumed this referred to invoices! No, it's another Americanism - the author actually meant to refer to Pound notes. These are only little things, but they jar, as they are incorrect for both country and period. Otherwise, this would have been another 5-star review.

This is the story of Freddy and Claire Hightower. I’ve been looking forward to reading this story for a while now, and it’s well worth the wait. We first met Freddy right at the beginning of this series when he jilted his bride at the alter to elope with Claire, but since then we’ve seen him change for the better. He started this series as a complete wastrel who gambled away his life and that of those he loved. Five years on and he’s become a considerate husband and a loving father, so it’s great that he’s finally getting a happy ending too. 🐈‍⬛.

This book is about a married couple who are now living apart from each other. Claire fell in love with Freedy immediately when she saw him. They ran away because Freedy was going to marry her friend. Soon Claire left Freedy because he was gambling so much, and they had to keep running. They have been apart for five years, and now he is back. He is going to do everything he can to stay in his house, with his wife and son. This is the fourth book in the series, Ladies Revenge Club. It was a smooth easy and enjoyable read.

Beautiful!

Best ever romance for lovers of the redeemed bad boy trope! Freddy the worthless wastrel Earl of Bentley is coming home to his ancestral estate, but estranged wife Claire isn't looking forward to the reunion. Strange, considering that maybe, possibly, she still has feelings for him - feelings she's determined to resist. Words can't describe how beautifully author Ava Devlin puts these lovers through their changes. I loved every minute of this complicated and slowly evolving resolution to their utterly memorable love story. The glow of satisfaction at the ending is still with me. This is an ARC review.

This story was a long time coming. Claire and Freddy are at least mentioned in all the books in this series. They start out their marriage with an elopement and both being immature. A pregnant Claire bans him from the estate. Five years later he comes back for his mother’s wedding and a second chance at his own marriage. It was great seeing the characters again from the previous stories. I’m so happy Freddy gets his HEA as I watched him change and mature so much in the previous books and overcome his gambling addiction.

I didn't want it to end!

Yet again Ava has created another world of people that I feeI I am a part of. I simply devoured this last one! I especially liked how her characters overlap, so we got glimpses of Freddy's growth with each previous book and am very pleased to finally hear his story.
There were so many lovely descriptions that rather than mark them to point them out, I savored every one of them. I was so immersed in this book that, when I finally took a break and realized I was almost done, I was reluctant to finish it. I didn't want it to be over!

I was glad that Freddie Hightower, Earl of Bentley, had his story. He did feature in previous books and the reader got a sense of how hard he was trying to change his lifestyle for the better. He had missed so much of his family life, including his son, Oliver. Now he is back on his country estate for his mother’s wedding, where his estranged wife, Claire, lives with their son. I loved the connection between Freddie and Oliver. Oliver was a little darling. I liked the way that Freddie and Claire got to know each other again, that first instant attraction was still there. The letter towards the end brought tears to my eyes. This was an engaging read, set in a lovely part of the country. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. Claire and Freddy elope just as he was to marry her friend Dot but things did not go as they expected when Freddy ends up in prison for gambling debts and she ends up with his child at his estate managing just fine on her own. Now he is out and wants her back along with his son Oliver. Will Freddy get his family back?

Yeah for Freddie!

I don’t know that I ever liked Claire for what she did in the beginning and she didn’t really redeem herself to me in the end. A little too self absorbed and flighty.

In the beginning of the series, Freddie had gambling and alcohol addictions that caused him to act up and do some bad things. He gets roasted in the first book and overcomes it all as a background character in the other books. He grows up. This book is about him getting his family back.

If you believe in second chances, someone’s ability to change and wanting to be better person because of love, this is the story. I was trying to understand why Freddie was loved by everyone when he was a jerk so much of the time in spite of trying to be better. This story brings it all together and Claire is changing too. A beautiful story of a lightning bolt attraction followed by unhappiness, life changes for everyone and then a road back home. Highly recommended!

Goodbye, Earl kept me up way too late reading! While I loved the characters in the previous books, I was honestly surprised to find Freddy Hightower so likeable in this one. It was great to see Claire and Freddy's story unfold. Ava Devlin has given us a wonderful love story once again and I can't wait to read her next one!
