ARC READ REVIEW
*I am leaving this review voluntarily.

First, I want to say how thankful I am to the author for trusting her work to me to read and provide occasional comments on.

The book is fairly new and is still in the editorial stages, otherwise I might have rated higher. The plot develops very quickly and the writing can feel a touch childish at times, but the author wrote it as a teen and I think that reflects the age group well. With this note, I think that the character personalities feel more like high school than college, so some of the themes were more mature than the writing.

The characters and setting are written in a different culture, which I really appreciate. The balance between rotating POVs was well done. The author is clearly talented even if the writing needs some refinement.

Overall it’s a cute debut romance book that I would recommend to a YA audience! I look forward to seeing this book in its final form and am positive that Stephanie Harina will continue to shine.

My overall rating is 2.5 stars.

1 star for me.

The cover and plot catch my attention, fake dating your enemy -yes please. When will I learn that cute cover does not mean cute book! What I just read? The MFC Alynna Paredes is pretending to be her half sister, sadly she have no spine, don't even question her mother, just accepting everything and letting everyone walk over her.Her great boyfriend Sky is hansome, rich and honestly horrible, but they are so great together-both so immature I would not give them 19 years. Some of his and hers so called friends and enemies behavior was disturbing,I really would not call this book romance. There was mention of forcing himself on her,but then that was a joke?Like I said disturbing and weird. The chapters end abruptly and then you get flasbacks, the story don't flow effortlessly, and I struggle through 3 days to finish this book.I guess it's just not for me.

The review is honest and my own.

As someone who heavily reads monster romance, psychological thriller, horror and heartbreaking family contemporary memoirs, this story gives my brain a light chance to relearn what "not going to require therapy entertainment" means. My heart rests for a little bit because I haven't cried in the last ten minutes. Yay!

I think I don't need to give the blurb about what this story is all about because the author already provided it in the description.

This story hits the sweet spot for readers who:
❤️ Doesn't stress over how each character develops their growth as the story goes on. The more you read scenes between Alynna and Sky, the more the "fake" part of their dating contract starts to look suspiciously like the "real" part.
❤️ Ready to excuse a few flaws in terms of pacing, repetition, or structure as long as the vibes are genuinely good.
❤️ Love to read romance comedy that gives comfort and zero headaches (you know... offering some sort of a little escape without trying to remember complex world-building or mystery clues).
❤️ Have a great taste in fast-paced online novels (Wattpad vibes) that run with beloved tropes and make no apologies for being purely entertaining.

❌ The only thing I may not let slide for giving it a solid 5 stars is about how the characters "magically" overcome their issues without any realistic emotional heavy lifting. I wish my problems were solved that quickly. 😅

I thought the moment Alynna and Janina met was a little rushed. They're half-sisters who've never met before, so I expected it to be a bigger deal.

☹️ If I were Janina,
☹️ If I were Alynna,

While this story won't be everyone's cup of tea, I would recommend it to TWO specific types of readers:

✅ If you're in your 30s like me and want to feel young (like going back to a time when Wattpad dominated our screen time)...this is good for you.
✅ If you want to take a timeout from reading heavy genres and looking for something trauma-free, this book is also for you.

------
NOTE: This is my personal opinion about the book. My goal is to share my experience, not to change anyone's perspective. Thank you to Stephanie Harina for giving me the opportunity to read this early.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! I love the chemistry of all the characters and it was laugh out loud funny! Even though I finished this book some time ago the chaos and quirkiness of the characters has stayed with me!
This is a wacky wild ride of antics and romance!

Dating My Wacky Girlfriend is a lighthearted debut romance with a fast-paced plot, quirky humor, and a youthful tone that reflects the author’s teen perspective.

While the writing can feel a bit immature at times, the rotating POVs and cultural setting add depth and charm.

The story follows Janina, a wealthy aspiring model who convinces her doppelgänger sister Alynna —raised in poverty—to take her place at a prestigious business school.

The love story between Alynna and Sky Anderson is sweet, though the narrative occasionally jumps around, making it slightly confusing.

With a cliffhanger ending and plans for a series, this book is best suited for a YA audience and shows promise for the author’s growth.

2.5🌟 - rounded up to 3🌟

I signed up for the advanced eArc for Philippine readers and received a copy via BookFunnel. Everything below is an honest review.

DNF at 20 pages.

Nope. Not gonna waste my time on this. It feels and reads like a caricature of a Filipino teleserye, and that's already saying a lot.

The descriptions of characters and their personalities are flat, the tone is juvenile, and as a Filipino reader, this just comes off as any other Wattpad story but written in English. All of them sound like it's a character trope from like a million other stories (rich Manila girl, poor provincial half sister, smug love interest, the gay friend) you name a teleserye archetypical character and it's in this thing.

Even the naming conventions are something you'd see in a Filipino Wattpad webnovel, except even more insufferable (Sky Andersen? Sounds like a 🌽⭐/bold star name) and out of place.

I don't know if the author really thinks her narration of events is what goes on in the "elite" universities? There's so many mentions of being having to be elite/cIassy but what does that even mean??? What the hell is Shibama?? Her yaya/housekeeper/stylist?? Why is she just trailing Alyanna around campus??

I get it, it's a comedy drama, not meant to be taken seriously, but this is the equivalent of those short vertical video servers where everything happens too quickly, has little substance or appeal outside of a 1 minute episode.

Maybe some young adult reader would enjoy this, it's easy enough to read if you're not looking for writing anything deeper than "I did this, I did that. He blushed, he scowled, she laughed." in terms of writing structure. Everything is spelt out, unnecessarily so but hey if that's your cup of tea, I'm not gonna yuck your yum.

There is some potential for the writer but this is not it. If she did write this when she was 12, it sure reads like it. I think this one should have stayed in the drafts, it's far too simple and boring to read for an adult audience.

Okay I had a really hard time getting to to this book until about page 35ish. Then BAM the stories picks up and you can’t put that darn thing down to be left with a bloody cliff hanger! Haha. Great story and reading Ynna and Sky’s relationship build was enticing! I would definitely recommend it. Anywho, happy reading fellow book lovers!

I was gifted this ARC for an honest review.
This is the first in a duo of books about sisters Janina and Alynna and them swapping places.
I am definitely not the demographic for this book, being a mum in her 50s, however my nearly 20 year old daughter would also like it. Having said that, I did enjoy the book and the story unfolding with Ynna in Manila and Janina in New York.
Take a chance on this new writer and see what you think.

I recently picked up Dating My Wacky Girlfriend by the talented Stephanie Harina, and to my surprise, I breezed through it in just a week.

Light, charming, and effortlessly engaging, it’s one of those stories that pulls you in before you even realize it.

Though I’m in my 30s—and probably not the book’s target demographic—I still found plenty to love.

The story follows Alynna, a young woman who enrolls in a prestigious college after essentially swapping lives with her long-lost half-sister—a fun and unexpected twist that sets the stage for a whirlwind of events.

At first, I wasn’t entirely sold on Alynna, particularly in how quickly she caved to Sky’s demands—it felt a bit too convenient.

But as the story unfolded, I came to understand her actions within the context of her background: a girl shaped by poverty, insecurity, and the weight of societal expectations, yet holding tightly to her dreams.

By the end, I genuinely admired her. Alynna’s journey is one of quiet resilience—she’s vulnerable but determined, flawed yet deeply human. Watching her grow into herself was not only rewarding but also inspiring.

Sky, on the other hand, was an undeniably entertaining presence—charming, attractive, and full of personality.

Still, I occasionally wished for a deeper look beneath the surface, particularly in how he connected with Alynna. There’s so much potential in his character, and I’m hopeful the sequel will dive further into his layers.

One of the standout elements for me was the cultural richness woven throughout the narrative. It brought the setting to life and added a vibrant, authentic texture to the story.

The lively supporting cast, witty dialogue, and warm humor kept the energy high, and the adorable cover art perfectly captured the book’s heartwarming vibe.

While there were a few moments that could have benefited from a bit more depth or development, Dating My Wacky Girlfriend was a sweet, cozy, and uplifting read.

It balances lighthearted fun with meaningful themes, making it perfect for anyone looking for a feel-good escape that still has emotional resonance.

I’ll definitely be watching for the sequel—excited to see how Alynna and Sky continue to grow, both individually and as a couple.

xoxo

I had the opportunity to read an early beta version of this book, and I’m aware that updates have been made since. While my rating would likely be higher if I were reading the current version, this reflects my impressions at the time. The story is both fun and engaging, with intriguing elements of switching places. I really appreciate the cultural representation, which adds depth and authenticity. Although status-swapping is a familiar theme, Stephanie introduces a fresh twist that sets this book apart. I believe teenagers will find it highly relatable on a personal level. I am really excited to see the changes and growth in this author and the series and will definitely be reading more!

"Dating My Wacky Girlfriend" is a cute, comfy, heartwarming YA rom com! It’s full of laugh-out-loud moments and crazy situations that anyone who’s been in a relationship can appreciate. It took me back in time to first loves, friendships, and life before adulting took over. It was such a fun and easy read… a nice pallet cleanse for me. I love an easy read where I don’t have to think and world build sometimes. The characters are fun and the story is easy to get into. If you're looking for a lighthearted and entertaining read that doesn't take itself too seriously, this is it. I’m super excited to read the second part of this duology.

Dating My Wacky Girlfriend is the first book in Harina's Wacky Duology. This romantic comedy is primarily set in Manila, and features Janina Fortaleza, Alynna (Ynna) Paredes, and Sky Anderson.

Janina is the heiress of Fortaleza Foods. She comes from an affluent family. While her dream is to model, her father, Philippe, wants her to attend Eastville College of Business (ECB), the top business school in Asia. As luck would have it, when she is offered a place with Murray Modeling Agency, she learns that she has a half-sister through her mother, Lalaine, who strongly resembles her. She comes up with the perfect solution - she can have this half-sister attend ECB for a year in her place, while she pursues her modeling career.

Janina tracks down Alynna in Bohol province and sees that her life is completely different. Alynna was raised by a single father, Peter, in an impoverished community. They have very little, and attending a school like ECB would never be within the realm of possibility for her. Janina spells out the offer and expectations, including not falling in love. Alynna cannot refuse this once in a lifetime opportunity and signs her half-sister's contract and is quickly whisked away to Manila.

In order to maintain the ruse, Janina has her makeup artist and go-to glam girl, Shibama (Shibs) Castro, remain with Alynna to ensure she always looks flawless, exactly as Janina would. It's a good thing because there is so much about Janina's life which Alynna wasn't told. For example, she is the leader of the Royals, her best friends are Debbie Caxon and Karen Thomas, both members of the Royals, she recently broke up with her boyfriend, Dave, in order to pursue modeling, and Sky is her nemesis since his family owns Fortaleza Foods' biggest competitor.

When Alynna first sees Sky, she cannot help but swoon. She doesn't realize who he is, or their tumultuous history. Alynna and Sky end up being paired together in a nutrition class and when Alynna hands in a failing assignment, she offers to make it up to Sky. Not used to failing, and hating Alynna, he takes her up on her offer. Sky, who happens to be the leader of a group called Vengeance, brainstorms with his friends and group members, Erick and Dwight. Sky has her agree to be his fake girlfriend for a year in order to make his ex, Farrah, jealous. Farrah left him for Dave, but Sky wants her back. Alynna agrees and signs yet another contract.

With fake dating comes forced proximity, and as is known to happen in these situations, feelings change. There is a lot more that happens in this book, including a glimpse into Janina's experience in New York. What starts out as a dream, finishes as a nightmare.

I don't think I was the best audience for this book. While reading it, even though these students are supposed to attending college, I felt they came across more like high school students in their behaviour, their interactions, and in the way they speak. I would say they could even be in junior high however there is some reference to sexual activity. While reading I wondered if some of the references would be better appreciated by someone who is from the Philippines.

The underlying storyline was cute. As a fan of Freaky Friday, I liked the premise. That said, I found that the book jumped around quite a bit, and it seemed like there was content which could probably be edited out without impacting the story.

The book ends on a sort of cliffhanger where Janina leaves New York, coming back to Manila with a lot of misplaced anger. The author will be continuing the story in Confessing My Wacky Secret. There is no planned release date, to my knowledge.

Overall, I would recommend this book to a YA audience. I think they will enjoy the characters and their dynamics.

Dating My Wacky Girlfriend by Stephanie Harnia
Status: DNF | Rating: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

This book felt like a box of assorted sweets, some bites were really yummy and fun, while others just weren’t to my taste. I actually enjoyed certain parts, especially the fast pacing which made it super easy to read. The plot itself was like a K-drama dessert: dramatic, playful, and full of twists. The whole “half-sisters who look alike but switch lives” premise is honestly so intriguing and had so much potential. It gave me those classic teen drama vibes where everything is over the top in the best way. I can definitely see why other readers might find it addictive.

However, not every flavor worked for me. I struggled to connect with the characters, and that made it harder for me to fully enjoy the journey. Some scenes felt a little off or cringey, which pulled me out of the story, and I just couldn’t read very far because I wasn’t having fun anymore. I know the author wrote this in high school, and it definitely fits the style that was super popular back then, but it just wasn’t my personal cup of tea. I didn't hate it, but I also didn’t fall in love with it.

Overall, this book wasn’t the right match for me, but I truly believe it could be someone else’s comfort read. It’s fast-paced, easy to digest, and full of drama and switcheroo fun, perfect for readers who enjoy K-drama plots or Wattpad-style storytelling. It has potential, even if it didn’t fully click with me. So while I couldn’t finish it, I still think there’s a sweet spot for the right audience.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!
Even though this book wasn’t fully my style, I still genuinely appreciate being given the chance to read it early. It means a lot when authors trust readers with their work, especially stories they’ve poured time, creativity, and heart into. I can see the passion in the concept and the effort in the writing, and I truly admire that. Thank you for sharing this story with me while it wasn’t the perfect fit for my personal taste, I know it will resonate with other readers who love fast-paced, K-drama-style plots.

This book is a lively and funny romantic comedy that confidently embraces its quirky tone. Harina excels at creating a heroine whose unpredictability feels both endearing and fun. This dynamic keeps the story engaging from start to finish. The novel offers a light, enjoyable experience filled with memorable comedic moments.

The reason for the four-star rating instead of five comes down to a few thoughtful points. While the humor is a key aspect, its exaggerated nature may not appeal to everyone, and sometimes the comedy overshadows character development. The pacing is also uneven; some scenes rush by while others drag on too long. Additionally, some supporting characters feel underdeveloped, suggesting potential story lines that remain untapped.

Despite these minor flaws, Harina’s work is still delightful, especially for readers looking for a lively, feel-good romance. The chemistry between the main characters is charming, the dialogue is fun, and the overall tone is consistently entertaining. It stands out as a joyful, high-energy romcom—an enjoyable read that deserves a spot on any contemporary romance shelf.

Janina recently found out she had a half-sister Alynna. Janina's mother cheated on her husband and had Alynna and left her with her father. She chose the rich life over her daughter. (Im not quite sure I could forgive my mother) Janina's plan for her future was the same as what her father wanted. Finding out about Alynna (by accident) was perfect.

Janina left for Bohol to meet her half-sister and to convince her to switch places. Alynna goes to college for free, and Janina goes and pursues a modeling career. (Opportunity doesn't knock twice as we all know) But trading places, not sure it was all the hassle. ( Leading a rich life sucks. Too many people to please.) Janina's rival Sky is full of drama, Im not sure Alynna wants to be apart.

To be honest, I stopped at Chapter 16. Even though this book has a college setting, its clear they aren't mature enough to be in college. It was all too dramatic. I struggled to hold focus. I never understood why people say, "Jesus Mary and Joesph- that's like cursing the same of Jesus." I would change that phrase.

I started this book because I wanted something light. I also was looking forward to discovering how the Philippines will be represented.

On the first 40 pages, I have to be honest, I wanted to DNF because of the characters. I found them excessive, from how they presented themselves to how they talk. Being classy and elite is given preference, and a male character calls a female MC a b*tch. Lastly, the one I found questionable is the father let's her daughter pretend to be someone else and is proud of her for it.

I wish there was a redemption arc of sorts, to prioritize the values that someone might show.

The style of writing was not the best nor the worst since the author wrote this during high school. This is more for YA than it is for adults. The storyline was good it just needed more work. I read this book and I thought it was cute. Alynna and Janina’s story was fun with the whole “switching lives” idea, and I liked Sky as the love interest, he was grumpy but sweet, and their slow burn romance was good. The plot moved fast, which made it easy to read, but sometimes it jumped around too much and felt confusing. I appreciated the cultural touches and the dual POVs, and the cliffhanger left me curious about the next book. Overall, it was enjoyable read. Thank you so much to the author and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review

I’ve always been drawn to identity-swap stories—they’re funny, messy, and full of those “oh no” moments. It’s hilarious how none of Janina’s friends realize it’s actually Alynna pretending to be her. But what makes it more than just comedy is how the story deepens toward the end. Beneath all the fun and confusion, there’s something darker and more emotional—especially when Janina realizes that her life in New York isn’t the dream she imagined. That contrast between lighthearted and heavy gives the story real depth.

Sadly, I DNF'ed this book.

The cover and premise was very interesting since I loved Fake Relationship tropes and I've read a few enemies to lovers fics before.

But the way this was executed felt poorly done to me. The MC being terribly juvenile was something I struggled to get past but even worse was how she fell into the typical "I don't subscribe to diets cause I stay super skinny even if I eat a mountain of food" trope to show she's not like her half sister or the other girls. I don't see a
modicum of intelligence that I hoped to see or expected considering she herself stated that she liked to study. Her immature behaviour was difficult to get through since it felt like she had no dignity or common sense.

IDK how to review or categorise the queer character. I'm genderfluid so seeing the character present female go by fem pronouns and if I remember right she still is referred to as a man falls into "transwomen is just men in drag" trope but I can't delve into that considering I can't even deduce enough about the character beside the fact that she likes MC more than her half sister and speaks Sassy.

And the ML? He's. The. Worst. Here I thought Mr. Willoughby or Heathcliff or even dare I say it, Captain Wentworth (sorry Persuasion girlies) were male characters I can't stand. He's so mean-spirited that it's difficult to get through the chapters with his behaviour. The weird cliques he and the MC's half sister lead have a feud ongoing and he hates her cause... MC's half sister broke up with the guy the girl he's in love with is pining for. He's a whole 20 year old behaving like an adolescent. Then there's the Volleyball Incident. The fact that he went out of his way to feed her bad food made me want to throw up since I experienced that abuse from someone I trusted and let me just tell you I consider anyone who deliberately does this to be a whole new kind of monster. And he did that so that she has no energy to win in the volleyball competition like aight.

And good god this is meant to be in a college but it's just giving high school. Especially how my mind illustrates the setting considering the two cliques' tables at the cafeteria are COLOUR CODED. What in the High School Musical Descendants Disney propaganda'd ass...

I'm sorry I'm sure this might be someone's cup of tea but this wasn't it for me unfortunately.
