у мене з цією книгою ставався якийсь on and off, і чесно я вже давно не пам‘ятаю, щоб я читала всього 200~ сторінок майже тиждень, як сталося і цього разу. зазвичай такі невеликі книжки йдуть за 2-3 дні. думаю це через те, що ця історія підпадає під опис “nothing happens but somehow everything happens and the same time”.

за словами багатьох, сама авторка запам‘яталась літературному колу скоріше як подруга інших авторів, а не як окрема авторка herself. і судячи з опису її життя, сама Кетлін напевно була б задоволена і цим також. великої слави у неї, на жаль, здобути не вдалося, проте вона точно писала у власне задоволення і любила читати те, що писали її друзі, знайомі, або нове покоління авторів того часу.

між авторкою та одною з головних героїнь можна помітити деяку схожість, тож припускають, що її героїня має доволі багато (або хочаб якісь!) риси самої Фаррелл. і загалом, з розповідей близьких до письменниці людей, найбільше за все їй подобалося проводити час з друзями в затишній квартирі, курити, грати в бридж, пити каву / коктейлі та багато-багато розмовляти, тож no wonder що в The Cost of Living у нас доволі багато сцен де головні героїні приходять одна до одної в гості на чашку чаю або склянку портвейну і обговорюють життя та якісь ситуації.

це доволі легкий, дуже неквапливий read, приємно написаний. піднімаються доволі цікаві питання та навіть прослідковуються феміністичні погляди in a way (що було kind of scandalous для жінки писати та видавати таку книгу в 1956). проте я б не сказала що від The Cost of Living варто очікувати чогось дуже особливого або groundbreaking.

мені здається тут прям відчувається те, що писала Кетлін просто у власне задоволення (адже через заможних батьків вона могла дозволити собі не працювати, до того ж у неї був доволі сильно виражений артрит, що і так зробило б її непрацездатною). а ще у неї приємна манера письма і вона вміє задати атмосферу!

Started great, ended nicely as they started. Did not catch on to everything in between though. Had so much potential but missed it for me. Was so eager for it to be great.

This was short, and very funny, but ultimately depressing. Much like the other book in the series that I read, books by women in the 1950s about women in the 1950s are just going to be depressing I think. By the end of the book, the two women are back to the start. But I really liked the narrator, and it was funny.
