This books was good, confusing but good. I was in a travel during i was reading it but it was good. I like The way this two guys interact with each other (just the way i interacted with my ex :'( *sad moments, i don't care* the seem to hate each other but in the deep they are really in love.
This is my sixth time reading this book and it's still one of my favorites in the series. I have a confession to make though. I really don't like Lilly, the female protagonist. Something about her just runs me the wrong way. It could have to do with her attitude towards Charlie who I loved. There was character growth though and by the end of the book I found myself liking her again. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of teen fiction especially teen fiction from the 90s.
These two are just mean and rude and there’s more than enough of that IRL. I don’t need to invite it into my reading life as well. Off to Goodwill with you Lily & Charlie.
a weird guy and a popular girl in school, it started out like the feeling is not mutual but as it went on..they find out that true love doesn't have boundaries at all.
It's interesting to see contemporary romance elements I love in these stories, even if they're not really working for me in terms of creating characters I like and want to invest time in.
I ALMOST DETRACTED A STAR FOR LACK OF BANGING, but I guess that's really a limitation imposed by the genre (light YA romance) so it wouldn't be fair to judge this book over-harsh. The book certainly made for it with the liberal application of dang, are they kissing AGAIN? a feature sorely lacking in fellow Love Stories entry, Stolen Kisses. (Kisses were stolen, but many were curiously left untouched by the sneaky bandit.)
Here's the skinny: I. Loved. This. Book. I want to touch this book on the butt. I want this book to touch me on the butt. Like, holy frick: she (popular, vivacious, stubborn, hates lying) wrecks her dad's car and he (smart, sarcastic, a hippie, also a mechanic) fixes it for free but only if she'll be his fake girlfriend at his cousin's wedding so he won't have to go on an Alaskan cruise with his wacky doll-collecting aunt (it's complicated). "Holy frick," you're saying, and I'm saying, yeah, I know, and then she has to keep being his fake girlfriend and then she's all like oh no do I want to be his REAL girlfriend??? and meanwhile he's like omg I haven't kissed a girl since maybe summer camp when I was twelve and meanwhile I'm like omg please do it in the tow truck, but maybe not given it's like super filthy inside that thing. They'll just have to do it somewhere else, like in my DREAMS apparently because Bantam Books hates me, personally.
While Bantam Books wants to see me weeping in agony through the remainder of my days, though, Catherine Clark clearly thinks I'm rad as hell, because think of a rom-com cliché, basically any rom-com cliché*, and it's in this book, and I LOVE IT!!! Some people say cliches are to be avoided but I say damn, who cares, it's all about the execution anyway, and let me tell you, if this book executed things any better, Robespierre would be dabbing at his eyes. (Too soon?) You want awkward slow-dancing? Boom, you got it. In the mood for some fresh we have to kiss each other to preserve the story? Here, have a double. Looking for dramatic love confessions in public? Sit down because your knees cannot EVEN support this. Been itching for some is it a cover or is it real? Put down the aloe because The Day I Met Him is on top of this shit. What about damn they clean up nice? Seriously, OK, did you not read what I said earlier, because that business is this book's business. What makes this book truly special is that THERE ARE EVEN MORE INSTANCES IN THIS BOOK (let me show you how to do x by standing behind you and touching your body with my body, wacky relatives who come through at the last minute to save the day, etc.). It's like this book was a love letter to me. I'm just ashamed I didn't read it sooner, like, what kind of monster am I?
My only regret with regards to the book's contents is, when Charlie helps Lilly's dad split wood, a) he doesn't roll up his sleeves and b) Lilly does not ogle his wiry but so firm muscles, the sweat beading his collar, etc. Also to be honest the entire subplot with Purported School Hottie B-something-I-already-forgot-his-name could have been dropped without damaging the book; while it provided conflict, the conflict was, well, unnecessary and kind of boring, just like Purported School Hottie B-what's-his-name. OMG, was that the point maybe? Well, whatever! That was time that would have been better spent elsewhere, e.g. maybe bulking up Charlie's home life and exploring Lilly's aspirations for the future.
Obvs none of those things bugged me enough to lower my rating, see: yo, I fricking love this book. Like: 1) Charlie is totes a 100% sexually inexperienced goober. B) Lilly initiates so much of the physical shit between them, also asking him to prom, also having agency and feelings. Plus) Lilly is never presented as a ~mean girl~ or someone who has to be humbled. 4) Def a lot of arguing but also a lot of joking around and being friends and stuff, so I can give the ~THEY FIGHT TO MASK THEIR ATTRACTION~ thing a slide, this time. And) Lilly's anger with Charlie re: THE BREAKING POINT is validated by the text + Charlie apologizes for stuff & wowowowow, omg, what a good, good romance. For realz, no jokes. If you're looking for a fun, zippy YA romantic comedy that not only embraces the expectations of the genre but enjoys them thoroughly, this is for sure worth checking out. Loved it.
They should've banged, tho.
*OK, not every rom-com cliche. Just a lot of the best ones.
This book is like a guilty pleasure. Lily was a really inmature character and it felt a little bit forced for her to be that way. The whole story felt really rushed. Everything happened really fast and the end wasn't quite satisfying and it felt really inmature too, and way too predictible for me. But overall I enjoyed the cheeseness of it. And I think that reading it in a time where I was going through this. I really want to read love, made me really enjoy this book.
Ahhh, the nostalgia kick. I think this is one of my favorite ones too. I used to gobble these books up like you wouldn't believe back in late-middle/early-high school. I'll have to give this book a reread for old time's sake at some point.
Bel libro.
this book is pretty good and i recommend for a light read and is not 5 stars just because for a small details, this have funny and romantic moments and i loved that.
