I’ve spent the pandemic reading too many bad books. I like them, curiously, I find them entertaining in their differing levels of bad.

This one wasn’t one of the entertaining bad reads, this was just bad. I’m not even sure where I found this mess.

He’s a real peach...
1. Gets a 16 year old girl pregnant, while on summer break from university.
2. Couldn’t care less when he’s told, hey you knocked up a kid.
3. Doesn’t consider taking responsibility until after his “girlfriend” dumps him.
4. Marries the heroine after she’s given birth to their daughter.
5. Spends the next 13 years serial cheating.

She’s a doormat...
1. She stays with him through all of the crap listed above.
2. She leaves when she finds out he’s been out of work for weeks without telling her.

She’s finally done, leaves for her family’s cottage in Cornwall, and he follows. He realizes what he’s losing and wants her to come back.

So, the only thing that saves this from being a 1 star book is her hooking up with a local for a couple of days before the husband shows up and when he arrives he gets an eyeful and waits until they’re done before announcing he’s there, but she’s done with him, right? Of course not, he turns everything to be about him and how he needs a second chance to save their marriage and he’s all about making changes to his life—self centered, superficial ass.

And, he somehow talks his way back. Why?? Because she’s an idiot and a complete doormat, that’s why.

Another Summer, by Sue Lilley

Published December 19, 2014

Imagine you are at home one day and need to reach your husband for something, and when you call his office, you learn that he has not been employed there for a month, although he has gotten dressed and left every morning? This is how Another Summer begins, with Evie discovering that her husband has been pretending to go to work everyday, thus prompting her to retreat to her grandmother’s remote seaside cottage. Once Evie disappears to the cottage, we learn the story of her and her (cheating, indifferent) husband Joe, and how they came to be a married couple, and all of the ways that he failed her as a husband. Luckily, upon arriving at her grandmother’s cottage, Evie meets the sexy, charismatic Jake. But even Jake is lacking in solid qualities, seeming he’s main priority is sex. I initially thought Jake was a very appealing character, however, as the story progressed, I just had a picture in my mind of a young man just wanting to get laid. Granted, Jake did provide somewhat of an awakening for Evie, making her realize there was so much more out there than her lying, cheating husband, but still I did not pick up on sincere intentions. When Joe discovers that Evie has taken off to the cottage, he realizes that she must have discovered that he is unemployed, but even on the way to try to fess up and make up with his wife, he is side-tracked by a young, pregnant girl that puts the moves on strong, and he somewhat reciprocates. Eventually the story line includes Joe’s discoveries of his wife’s recent activities, a disaster, and recovery. What I do not understand, however, are Evie’s decisions about their lives and marriage.

At first I was drawn into this novel and was eager to continue through it to discover what would happen. I enjoyed Lilley’s writing style and found it eloquent, classy, but easy to relate to. However, I think that the plot, climax, and ending of this novel just didn’t set well with me because of my own beliefs and values. Evie’s husband, Joe, is not a good person throughout the entire novel, and in my opinion, should have been discarded, despite marital vows. Evie’s quickness and ease to forgive him sends a negative message to young women, in my opinion, demonstrating that a man has the right to cheat and lie but when he’s sorry, one must forgive. Again, I loved the author’s writing style and initially had high hopes for this novel, but it just wasn’t my style. I am all for writing in villains or unlikable characters, but Joe was not worthy of anyone’s time or love, much less forgiveness.

--------------
I liked the story!
The hero is a womanizer, cheater, jerk. The heroine is a fool in love that stays at home taking care of his daughter while he has Affairs with several women.
And in the end they work out... I would prefer that she dumped him, but the story was well written.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest reivew.

The question for this book what would you do if you believed that the person you loved the most never really loved you? Would you stay and fight for the relationship or would you move on to greener pastures?

In this book we meet Evie and her husband Joe. Evie has finally had the straw that broke the camel's back. They have been married for 13 years and though she can't prove it she is quite sure that Joe has never been faithful to her. When Evie finds out that Joe has been unemployed for 3 weeks and he never bothered to tell her. After being laid up from a surgery she knows what she needs now is to figure out what she wants her future to look like. So she goes back to where it all started her grandmother's cabin. On her first day there she meets a younger man named Jake and he stirs things in her she hasn't felt in years but does she go with them or choose to stay faithful to a husband she isn't sure ever was to her.

Joe knows he needs to be completely honest with his wife but he is afraid if he is this will be the time that she leaves him for good. Problem is before he can make this decision and get home to tell her someone does it for him and his wife is gone. Joe goes off to try and make things right with his wife. Along the way Joe finally learns some hard lesson about things he has done and how people see him. The first person he meets is a 17 year old girl named Lisa who is pregnant and looking to tell the father. Joe remembers being in this situation and is trying to give the girl advice while remembering what his own wife must have gone through. Next is his sister and his old best friend both of them aren't sure he is really the man for Evie and maybe he should be man enough to finally let her be and have a good life. Joe realizes that he has made mistakes and wonders if even though he is turning over a new leaf will his wife still want him?

This story bounces between the past and what is currently happening with this couple and the people they interact with. It shows what some people are willing to do to keep love alive. I would recommend this book it is good.

I am grateful for having the opportunity to review this book - I was drawn to it by the thoughtful cover design and also that it is mostly set in the beautiful county of Cornwall in the UK.

The story tells the tale of Joe and Evie, a young couple from Newcastle who met and married and had a child very young. Marriage hasn't been plain sailing - Joe hints at extramarital activities and the final straw for Evie is when she finds out he has been lying about going to work every day when actually he has handed in his notice. To have some time alone, she goes to stay at a relative's empty cottage in Cornwall where she meets budding young rockstar Jake, whose confidence and charm turn her head.

Joe is determined to turn over a new leaf and has an adventurous journey down to find her. The central theme is around whether she will be tempted into a new exciting life with Jake or will forgive Joe and try to forge a future together.

I found this novel irritating in that I didn't wholly care for either of the two men in her life - especially Joe. I'm not sure Evie deserves either of them. It was occasionally unevenly paced. Whilst I really enjoy stories told from different characters POV, an excess of rhetorical questions is tiresome.

If you are looking for a straightforward will she/won't she romance, then this book is for you. If you are looking for more complex themes then look elsewhere. I apologise for giving less than three stars as I am in awe of anyone who attempts to write a full-length novel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Worst book ever!!!!

1) The mmc is a cheating a33hole throughout the book before; after marriage throughout their marriage and after fmc getting to know it he still emotionally cheats with a 16yr old girl.
WOWW NOT JUST A CHEATER BUT A PEDOPHILE!!!

2) Throughout the book he mentions ow Kat as love of his life and obsession, even after all these years with fm.....and he has a nude portrait of her in their bedroom and fmc is very uncomfortable too🤐

3) The guy absolutely doesn't think his cheating is wrong and acts like a victim whenever his sister and his brother in law confronts him🤨🤨

4) There is no way in hell he can get forgiven for it all.. fmc should have left him and have hea with some other guy and mmc should live a miserable life repenting until end...that's the only ending I'm accepting!!!

Evie and Joe. She is super young and naive. He is older, charming, and smooth talking. Flash forward a year or so: finds the non couple married with a baby.
Years later, the marriage is falling apart & Evie finally throws in the towel and leaves. A one night stand, a repentant hubby, late night confessions, and a life altering experience changes everything.
This story tells the tale of love, heartbreak, lust, and human resilience. For the most part this story could be true to life. It's an easy sorta guilty pleasure type read. I have to say in all honesty, i wasn't all that impressed with the ending and felt it was all resolved super quick in comparison to the build up.

A very naive 16 year old Evie was holidaying at her grans beach side cottage in beautiful Cornwall, she met, fell in love with and lost her virginity to a much more worldly Joe March. Pregnant Evie was now alone.

After much trauma Joe eventually married Evie and was a father to their daughter Clair, but he was never faithful, one of his many affairs was with artist Kat, who he mistakenly thought was the love of his life......Evie was a doormat.

When Evie found by accident that Joe hadn't been to work for four weeks she snapped and headed for her late gran's Cornish cottage.

Enter young mechanic Jake Morgan who was also lead singer and saxophonist of a band Morgans Rum and about to hit the big time.

Jake managed to convince Evie that she was beautiful and sexy, something that Joe had never acknowledged. Evie began to see herself differently and was soon having a mind blowing affair with Jake .

Joe slowly began to realise that what he wanted was what he already had and set off on an arduous, temptation loaded journey in stormy weather in an attempt to win Evie back. Put a horrendous accident into the mix and the suspense builds.

Will Evie return to her first and only true love or will she take Clair and go with Jake for love and sun in Ibiza.

A lovely story of second chance love.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book was something else. Both characters still have a lot to learn about each other, or have to rediscover a lot about each other. It unnerved me at times, but it also helped me understand the actions or the decision they took. I really had no clue how it would end. So I went on with every page and kept on reading. And I liked what I read.

Finally tired of being lied to, or finally tired of ignoring the ever present signs, Evie takes some time away from her marriage. Hoping to figure out where her feelings stand and if she can give her husband another chance, she goes off to her grandmother’s house to do some thinking. Here she meets Jake who wants to fulfill her every desire and fantasy. But back home, Joe wants his wife back. Is there another chance for this family? Have they really done a mistake? And if they did, when was that? Before or during their marriage?

Each of these characters, Evie, Jake and Joe, is unique and very complex. The author has done a great job making the reader understand their actions on a psychological level. Evie finds in Jake the fun she has lost (or maybe never had) with her husband. Jake enjoys each day and takes what life gives him, making the most out of each day. And Joe, is it late for him to recover his family? I think he is a very interesting character and the fight he has inside is much deeper than the one the other characters have.

I liked it and I liked it a lot to give 4 stars. I loved that it has shown different perspectives of a damaged relationship, different views on life and I lived that it raises a flag on any relationship in which there are no sparks. Even if we speak about a boyfriend and girlfriend or a marriage, there has to be an interesting side to it. I would have given it 5 stars, but Joe’s trip and his “adventures” didn’t stay well with me. But other than that, it blew my mind!

Another Summer is a love/sex novel written by Sue Lilley. Sure there are many novels of similar ‘genre’ if we can call it that and when you bump into another “he loved me but now he does not anymore’’ the first thought that comes to your mind is probably “oh no, not another one’’. But Another Summer is just another “love me, loved me, love me again’’ novel. That does not mean that the novel is poorly written, no. In fact, if you are a fan of novels of this genre then you will love this one too. But if you are not and if you still want to read a good novel with good story and several “oh my God’’ twists, then you are still lucky.
The story revolves around two young people. They are in love, the sex is fantastic and everything seems blissfully awesome. But (we cannot go anywhere without a “but’’) then something happens and “happily ever after’’ tale between our two lovers is coming to its end. And this is actually the best part of the novel. Even though most of us know that many authors constantly use this formula and even though it is nothing actually new, it works every time! What happened when “he’’ was ‘’there’’? Who is that new woman and why did he did what he did? Questions like these urge us to press forward until we finish reading the novel and until we finally discover “the secret’’. And this one is nicely written. I mean- I’m not a fan of novels of this genre, but the author knows how to “draw’’ you into the plot and this is something commendable. All in all – 4/5.

Holy gods what a book it sure was something else. It was well done and thought out, even at time I was a little lost in the end it all made sense. this was one interesting story.
This is Evie’s story. Normally I would say the other name But I want to leave it a mystery.
Now she still has a lot to learn about each of them, or have to rediscover a lot about each other. This story bugged me at times, but I have to say it helped me understand her actions or the decisions. I really had no idea how this would all end. And I had to keep reading to find out. You see Evie is so tired of being lied to, and tired of being ignored. So Evie takes some time away from her marriage. After what her husband did to her. She is trying to figure out her feelings and if she can give her husband another chance. So she goes to the one place she feels safe and secure, her grandmother’s house. There she can do some thinking. This is where she meets Jake who wants to fulfill her every desire and fantasy. But Joe wants his wife back. Is there another chance for them? Or have they both made a mistake? And is this the end or is it the new beginning?

Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too

Another Summer by Sue Lilley is about a young couple, Evie and Joe and their “it’s complicated” relationship. They got pregnant and married way to young and now have to deal with their wandering desires, broken pasts, and enough emotion you would think they are going through a second puberty.

The book reminds me of a guilty pleasure reality TV show. Lots of scandel, sex, and drinking. I would not call it a romance. When I think romance I want to be the characters and lust after their love life. If anything this just made me thankful for the partner I have and happy I am no longer a teenager. So while I would have prefered they turned their faces against temptation and kept to their vows (we need more of that in the world)...that would have made for a very short and boring book.

What I did enjoy about the story was it did not give you just a straightforward troubled relationship. The author attempted to explain their poor decisions and some deep psychological reasons as to why they made them. The attempt to explain their choices and past added a new layer to the story you typically do not get to experience in most drama novels. Quite an interesting read.

This is the first book by this author that I have read. If this is anything to go by, I can't wait to get ahold of more of her work. This story was one that I started after everyone went to bed, thinking I'd grab a few chapters before bed, but, before I knew it the night had passed and I was still reading when the sun came up. I loved this one. Evie has been married to Joe for quite a few years, she'd put up with his unfaithfulness, for the sake of their daughter. She finds out that he'd been lying to her yet again, he'd been leaving the house to "go to work" for the past month, when she called his work to talk to him, she finds out he'd been fired weeks ago. It was the LAST STRAW! She quickly packed up and tore out of there heading to the cottage her gran left to her in the countryside. She left a note telling Joe where she went, but not when or if she'd be back. He follows after her a few days later. In the meantime... This book gave me a mix of the feelies, and I liked it! Grab it yourself and see what you think of it!

I was intrigued by the blurb of this story. A woman who has had enough of her husband's lies and takes off to her grandmother's cottage to consider her options. The story goes back and forth between the past and present and explains how a young and innocent Evie falls pregnant at 16 to Joe and now after thirteen years of marriage, she has finally realised that he has taken her for granted all these years.

After learning Joe's backstory I must admit that I found absolutely no redeeming qualities in him at all. He was selfish and self absorbed and it took his wife walking out on him to realise what he actually had. Evie was also too quick to repeadedly forgive Joe for his extra marital affairs, all in all I liked the writing style but was not a big fan of the main characters.

I received an ARC of this book from Booksirens and this is my honest review.

Evie has had a rough year and finding out that Joe lost his job 3 weeks ago was the last straw. She quickly leaves home to go to her grandmothers cottage to do some soul searching.
Joe left his job before he was fired and nothing had panned out yet. He has cheated and lied for most of their marriage and now that Evie has left he realized that she is what he wants and hopes it's not to late.
At the cottage Evie meets Jake. Jake is hot, young and very persistent, after spend time with him Evie starts to falls for his charm. Evie doesn't know that Joe is on his way to win her back, what will she do? Choose a summer romance with Jake or try to fix her marriage?
This was a new author for me and I love the way she made the characters come to life!

Another Summer, by Sue Lilly is a wonderful romance novel to get lost in. Its very close to peoples lives today and that makes all the more interesting in my opinion. Sue has a way of writing that makes the reader feel like they are experiencing the event first hand, her character’s are vivid images magically real and you are like putty in her hands as she shapes their destiny or ends their purpose. This is the first novel I read of hers and I look forward to reading more of her work. Sue is a great story teller and I appreciate her ability to write a romance novel without the vulgarity and descriptiveness some author’s chose that is best left to the readers own imagination. Thanks Sue I really enjoyed it, and I’m able to recommend it to readers of all ages. Good clean reading.

This was a well-written novel; it is too bad it was centered around two extremely unlikable protagonists. Why would Evie ever put up with Joe for all those years? Forgive him in the blink of an eye (or a couple shots of vodka)?

And then there's Joe—Joe, Joe, Joe, Joe, Joe! *SMH* OMG - THE. WORST. ANITHERO. EVER. PERIOD! What a sleaze! One can only wonder how long it will take before Joe goes back to his ol' prowling ways—a month?—a week? He sought forgiveness, claimed he's a changed man (Yeah, right!).

Romance? HEA? Nope. Nothing to see here, folks. Can not recommend this book.

My heart just about broke with this one. The emotional pull from this book was real and strong for me. This, for me, a great example of a book that truly talks about the complexity of relationships. The characters were raw. The dialogue was eloquent that brilliantly shows both sides of a relationship. With the third person POV, it truly made it feel as if a reader is in a neutral position and could formulate his or her own reactions and thoughts about what was happening.

I received this as a review copy and am posting this review of my own free will.

First, let me state I like the way this author writes. Her words were very appealing, especially for a first book.

Sadly, though, the Hero was a Zero and such a whiny, lying, loser that at story end I was left wishing he had drowned and the heroine had run away to Ibiza with her lover. Who wants to live a Jerry Springer episode for life?

I will read more by this author :)

Another Summer

Thought this was a romance. It wasn't. It was about a marriage in crisis. Infidelity in both sides. Two wrongs don't make anything right. Was not impressed by the author. I read romance for the escapism. Those with HEA ending. This didn't happen.
