Ah, I'm actually angry. Most of this book was actually really good and enjoyable, but that final story? Pretty much ruined it for me. Bit necessarily because of the content but because it was really badly written. And just... I get what she was trying to do, but it felt rushed, forced and just badly construed and pretty much ruined Kushigata for me. I loved him and Hara's relationship up to that point, and that last story.... the more I think it the angrier it makes me, and I think the three stars will become one.
In case you're wondering what makes me so angry and don't care about spoilers: most of the book is about two high school students, one a former hopeful ballet student whi had to quit because of an injury. It's a sweet story about high school life and the ballet student getting inspired to not give up on his dreams just yet thanks to the love and quiet support of the other. All well and good, and told with the right amount of awkwardness.
The last story is set 10 years later and we're supposed to think the non-ballet guy is about to marry the ballet guy's cousin (spoiler: he's not, his best friend is and it's painfully obvious from the start). Hara (non-ballet guy) and Kushigata (ballet guy) have recently separated, or rather Kushigata broke up with Hara, claiming Hara is a burdon to him and a long distance relationship is just too much. The truth however is that Kushigata's injury has returned and he didn't want to become a burden to Hara. The make up, the wedding happens happy ending.
Apart from the stupid "mislead", so many things annoy me. Kushigata never was like this in the main story, and it made no sense to me he'd turn into this sort of person. I get the idea that it's difficult to keep up a relationship for so long, especially a long distance one, but couldn't there have been a better way to tell that kind of story? As I said, I also found it way too rushed to be even close to convincing, and considering it's supposed to be set ten years from *now*... who knows if people are still using LINE then. Considering the development of the last ten years I'd say it's doubtful. Details like that made it obvious how.. lackluster this was. Considering this is the only BL Eda Yuuri put out this year, it's really sad, since most of this book - i.e. the parts I liked- were recycled stuff and the last story was * this*. To be fair, the second to last story was also new, and good. But that last one really ruined it. I know I'm repeating myself. But I'm disappointed. Especially because I know she can do better than this.
Maybe she has written all the BL stories she wants to write. Considering how many there are, that's more than fine. If she decides to write more I will happily read them, and just hope they'll turn out better than this one.
