I'm an avid reader, lifelong mystery lover, and debut author.

Growing up, I spent countless hours watching Murder, She Wrote with my grandma and read any mystery series I could get my hands on from Cam Janesn to The Boxcar Children.

Fast forward to 2020. I was living alone in a 200-square-foot studio apartment during the pandemic. I was living hours away from my nearest family. Unable to go anywhere, I found a joyful respite in cozy mystery novels, allowing myself to be transported to coffeeshops, bookstores, and other cozy locations I couldn't visit in person. I made friends with the amateur sleuths and quirky cast of characters in the long-running series I was devouring.

As much as I fell in love with the genre, I quickly realized that it was rare to see a character like me—a gay man—represented on the page, especially as a protagonist. So I set out to write my first mystery.

When I'm not writing, revising, or publishing a story, I enjoy reading (of course!), taking long walks, listening to live music, and tasting new craft cocktails in my chosen hometown of Asbury Park, NJ.

This is book one in a new series by a new writer, but it feels like it was written by a seasoned author. All of the characters are likeable and supportive of one another (well, with the exception of the obnoxious jerk who gets murdered). Solid storytelling, solid plot, and enough personal stories to make you love the people.

The protagonist, Reece, had a major life upheaval six months ago and to help him cope, he's opened the coolest bar in his small town. The bar has a bookish vibe where even the menus look like books. The focus in the bar is on the crafting of the cocktails, not just getting hammered. The murder happens behind the bar in the alley, so Reece feels compelled to investigate on his own and solve the crime. The sooner the killer is caught, the sooner Reece's life can get back to normal.

There's a lot of personal growth in this book, and like I said, everyone is supportive and positive. Reece has recently realized he's gay, but he hasn't come out yet to his family, or really, anyone else. It's a difficult time for him, but as he said "bravery can't exist without knowing you have people in your life who love and care about you".

This is definitely a five-star read.

I love Reece Parker! I can't remember the last time I was so taken in by the MC in a new series. I love character driven series, so this one caught me early on. Reece is such a thoughtful, hardworking, and likable man. There are plenty of other interesting characters, Reece has a great group of employees, his parents, friends, and even his ex-fiancee. The setting in a charming, walkable, small business-friendly town adds to a wonderful atmosphere. The best setting, however, is the wonderful literary-themed cocktail lounge, Subplot, that Reece has poured his life and efforts into ever since he broke off his engagement six months before. With everything invested in Subplot, Reece is horrified to find the body of a disgruntled member of a whiskey club, who had used the lounge for its monthly meeting, when he took out the trash. Determined to save the reputation of his business and the possibility that he and his cocktail artist employee will be considered suspects, Reese starts asking questions. While this is definitely an interesting and twisty mystery, the best part of this debut for me is the wonderful character of Reece and the atmosphere he has created in his life and business. I can't wait for more! #WhiskeyBusiness #AMixologyLoungeMystery #AdrianAndover #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader

I was excited to receive an advanced copy of this ebook from the author. This was an excellent start to a new series and I’m eagerly awaiting the next! Reece is a likable character who is trying to come to terms with himself and looking for acceptance and forgiveness for who he is. I enjoyed all the descriptions of Subplot, and the all the amazing drink creations. Hope Mills and its characters were described so vividly I felt like I was right there as the story was unfolding. Solid mystery that kept me guessing. A knockout start to a new series.

After ending his engagement to his fiance in order to be true to himself, Reece Parker, mixologist, and owner of Subplot has thrown himself into making his new literary-themed speakeasy a success. Unfortunately, finding a man murdered after a club event at his lounge threatens exactly that and puts him on the suspect list. As he works to prove his innocence, Reece navigates many challenges along the way, both professionally and personally. I found myself rooting for him the whole way and was impressed with the depth of his character. I so enjoyed being immersed in this story and getting to know the characters of Hope Mills that I didn't want it to end. Whiskey Business is a mix of all the right ingredients. Compelling, touching, and fun, it's an impressive debut and fantastic addition to the cozy mystery genre.

Such a fantastic debut! Adrian Andover has penned a well-written, perfectly paced mystery that's full of heart. Filled with vivid descriptions and a fun, unique setting, I was fully immersed from page one until the satisfying conclusion. I only wish Subplot existed in my own small town. I mean, c'mon! A literary themed cocktail lounge with replicas of classic books as the menus?!? Yes, please! I found myself smiling and tearing up at multiple points, and can't wait to see what's next in store for Reece and the gang. Highly recommend for cozy mystery lovers.

My sincere thanks to the author for providing an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’ve been anticipating this book for months now. It did not disappoint. The setting is Subplot, a mixology lounge, with audiobooks playing while you visit the restrooms, menus that are bound books and drinks that sound wonderful (I want to try Huckleberry Gin). The vision of this setting is brilliantly laid out by the author and perfectly captured by the cover of the book.
The mystery is solid, the characters are likable (if we all had friends like this) and an underlying story of growth.
I’m looking forward to the second in the series and see where this storyline takes us.

Fantastic start to a new series! I am not a drinker but I loved the setting of a literary-themed lounge that plays audiobooks and serves literary-themed cocktails. The mystery was well-paced and had me guessing until the end, but where this really shines is in the character development. The secondary characters are all well-developed and make you want to spend time getting to know them but Reece, the star of the show, is struggling with some decisions he has to make in his life, and you can feel his angst and fear over this decision. It was so well done that I’m sure that the author pulled from personal experience, making this even more heartwarming and real. I loved everything about this book and can’t wait for the next.

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Whiskey Business by Adrian Andover, and what a fantastic debut this turned out to be. From the very first page, it read like it was written by someone who’s been telling stories all their life.

Reece Parker is a protagonist you can’t help but root for. After a difficult life change, he pours his energy into opening Subplot, a literary themed cocktail lounge, the kind of place I’d be a regular at if it were real. The details of the bar, from menus disguised as books to the carefully crafted cocktails, made the setting leap off the page.

When a murder takes place just outside Subplot, Reece finds himself drawn into the mystery, not only to clear his name but also to protect the life he’s worked so hard to build. What impressed me most was how seamlessly the author wove together a compelling mystery with Reece’s personal journey of growth, self-acceptance, and bravery. The supporting cast of characters in Hope Mills was warm, real, and easy to love, making me want to spend more time in this town.

This is a debut that sets the bar high for what’s to come. The pacing was spot-on, the mystery kept me guessing, and the heart of the story stayed with me long after I turned the final page. I cannot wait to see what’s next for Reece and his circle of friends. Highly recommended for cozy mystery fans looking for a fresh, heartfelt twist on the genre.

A Mixology Lounge mystery

The whole premise of this book revolves around Literary theme bar. During a meeting of a group holding their meeting there. One of the members of the group is found later in the back Alley behind the club. I love the Literary theme cocktails throughout the book. There are several suspects that emerge. I didn't figure out who the murderer was. I loved all of the characters.

I have been eagerly anticipating the first book in the Mixology Lounge series ever since I saw the stunning cover, and the story surpassed my expectations. Adrian Andover is a debut author and quickly became a top favorite of mine before I was even halfway through the book.

Reece Parker, a Mixologist, has recently opened a literary-themed cocktail lounge called Subplot in his hometown of Hope Mills, PA. The story opens when a local whiskey club is using Subplot for one of their monthly meetings, and a local distiller is having a tasting of his newest whiskey for them. But one of the members, Brent, boasts about being from Kentucky, ‘the only place real whiskey is made’, and his belligerent and antagonistic attitude brings down the happy atmosphere. A few of the other members try to get him to shut up and Brent ends up slamming out the back door of the lounge.

The rest of the evening goes off without a hitch, until Reece is taking the trash out to the dumpster and stumbles over Brent’s body (I knew he was going to end up badly!). And to top it off, the policeman who responds to the emergency call is his ex-fiance’s big brother. Scared to death he and his brand new cocktail lounge will be blamed for the death, Reece knows he has to investigate and try to figure out who had a death wish for the belligerent man.

I really enjoyed this book and the quirky characters, especially Reece, as he navigates through his journey of introspection and life decisions. Each character has his/her own voice and their own sets of problems to work through, so not everyone is the same.

The author has a great voice for storytelling, and Whiskey Business is a perfect addition to the Cozy Mystery genre. The plot is well thought out and the pace is steady, ramping up to a life or death confrontation between Reece and the culprit(s). And the setting descriptions bring the story to life so much that I want to spend evenings at Subplot, enjoying all the delicious cocktails Reece and his staff concoct for their patrons. I could see Hope Mills so vividly, and now I want to live there.
As Cozies are my favorite genre to read, I honestly feel this is a fantastic start to a new series, and I can’t wait for more books from Adrian Andover!

Quick side note about the gorgeous cover. Kudos to the cover artist who absolutely illustrated the look and mood of Subplot, the cocktail lounge. She brought to life the author’s descriptions and I want to go there!

Thank you to the author for providing an advanced copy of the book. I am happy to leave my honest thoughts and opinions.

Adrian Andover has skillfully crafted his debut novel called "Whiskey Business" for a wonderful start of the "Mixology Lounge Mystery" series.

I first heard of this author and book a few months ago when another author shared a blurb about it. The plot intrigued me, so I pre-ordered it for my Kindle well before the release!

Reece Parker has just opened his book themed cocktail lounge - Subplot - in the basement of a building in his hometown of Hope Mills. He is also still coming to terms with his sexuality after ending his engagement six months earlier. Only his ex, Chloe and his best friend Nate know his truth so far.

It's a lot to adjust to, but he really didn't need to find the body of a boisterous customer behind the back of the lounge after closing one night. Fearing he will be a suspect, Reece decides to do a bit of sleuthing to clear his name and save his new business.

The story drew me in from the first page. The description of the lounge sounded like the perfect place to hang out - even for those of us who rarely drink! The core characters are well drawn but there is still so much room for development and future storylines. Dialogue felt realistic. There were a couple of places where I needed a tissue as Reece expressed his emotions and got some much needed support.

There were several potential suspects - a couple of which I narrowed in on fairly quickly. Of course, there were a number of unexpected twists for Reece as he tried to gather information. Even with some vandalism and scary moments, he didn't give up.

I absolutely loved this book! From the atmosphere at Subplot to the quirky characters to a twisty mystery, this was a wonderful read! I am already looking forward to what Adrian Andover comes up with for the next book in this series!

I want to start by saying that I can understand why this book has a high average rating. This book has all of the tropes that a commercially successful book follows. Examples include a small town setting, Mc going through a major change and trying to rebuild their life, a quirky/ interesting job as a hook, an established cast of characters, and even a cozy pet mascot.

However, I personally realized that I am not the target audience for this book, which is okay. I am not a big drinker at all, so the talk of the lounge drinks was not something I personally connected to, but I could tell that the writer is very passionate about it, and I found that commendable.

But as to why I gave this book a 3-star rating. For starters, I found the mystery very easy to solve. I pegged who the killer was and why very early in the story. So whenever this happens, I automatically take 1 star off. I took another half-star off for some of the pacing in the book. Several chapters ended up at the end of a suspect interview without much reflection, then the next chapter started much later in the timeline, and it felt off to me while reading. Lastly, I took off another half-star for the personal coming-out arc for the MC. As a fellow queer author, I found certain aspects of this arc confusing, inconsistent, and neatly wrapped up by the end in a way I didn't feel fit the story or the way things played out or how the setup was given. But this might just be a personal thing.

However, I am a tough critic for mysteries, and I know this, so I want to say this was a fairly solid debut that shows potential for future books. If you like character-focused, vibey cozies, with an MC with an interesting job, I suggest you check this out!

Whiskey Business is the first book in the Mixology Lounge Mystery Series by Adrian Andover. The amateur sleuth is Reece Parker, a mixologist and the owner of Subplot, a literary-themed underground cocktail lounge in Hope Mills, Pennsylvania.

Reese is shocked to discover a body behind his new cocktail lounge after a whiskey club meeting gone wrong. He turns amateur sleuth to clear his name, safeguard his fledgling business, and uncover the truth.

Whiskey Business is a fantastic debut with a creative hook, a top-shelf mystery, and an engaging character arc.

Subplot is a book lover's paradise. The underground lounge has built-in bookshelves, reading chairs, and library ambience. Reece and his employee Ava are skilled mixologists who craft creative mocktails and cocktails with literature-inspired names (Huckleberry Gin, Green Gables). The literature and mixology details are incorporated seamlessly, providing good detail without overwhelming the story.

The mystery is well-plotted with a good number of suspects and cleverly planted clues. You really get the sense that you are sleuthing with Reese as you read the story.

Reece is an interesting character who is in the middle of grieving the end of a relationship. He has just broken up with his long-time girlfriend and fiancé on the cusp of their wedding because he has finally admitted to himself (and to her) that they are not right for each other. Watching him navigate this situation was often as engaging as the mystery.

I loved Whiskey Business and can't wait for the next round!

I received an advance reader copy of this book prior to publication. This did not influence my voluntary review.

This is the first book in a series that follows Reece, a mixologist who just opened his own bar. Things quickly get complicated when a patron winds up dead right outside. But when the victim is rather unlikable, the suspect list continues to grow and Reece finds himself trying to figure it out and clear his name, and save the reputation of bis business. The storytelling is really good. The case made sense, the characters are three dimensional and have a lot of depth.

Reece is struggling with a called off engagement and the realization he is gay. This part of the story was really powerful to me because it delved into so much of the emotions and thought process of trying to be who you are but not wanting to disappoint others and the expectations for what they envisioned your life to be. I think the author did a great job navigating all of this.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the speakeasy bar and the cocktails. A lot of descriptions that vividly painted a mental image. A lot of thought went into the smaller details of this book and it shows. It was enough to allow me to picture the scene without being too much.

The ending was really good for many reasons. The twist ending was unexpected. Things got wrapped up nicely and there were some sweet moments that I won't spoil. This series has great potential. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book and truly enjoyed the storytelling.

This was such a delightful book, with so many components that I found irresistible. The protagonist, a youngish gay man named Reece, has recently opened a cocktail lounge in the charming hamlet of Hope Mills. The lounge is literary-themed and aptly named "Subplot," which creates endless options for punnily-named cocktails that appeal to book lovers. When Reece stumbles upon a body whilst taking out the trash one evening, he finds himself enmeshed in an investigation that threatens the success of his nascent business. What follows is cozy mystery at its best. The characters are well-drawn and complex enough to be interesting and believable. Reece finds himself in just enough peril to keep the reader on their toes. The resolution involves the right amount of complex conspiracy to tickle the brains of cozy mystery readers. Truly a remarkable debut novel!

While the book succeeds in all the criteria of a cozy mystery, its success in relatability goes beyond the cozy form. Reece is surrounded by so much love--from parents, from a friend->fiancée->friend (who loves him unconditionally), from a potential love interest, from a cat, from others. As gay men who grow up in a heteronormative world, we sometimes doubt the love others have for us; Reece is no exception. Witnessing his acceptance of the love that has been there all along was a cathartic and moving reading experience, and one I dearly hope other gay readers allow themselves to experience.

Reece Parker has opened Subplot, a literary themed cocktail lounge, in his hometown. He’s trying to build his clientele, so he’s thrilled when a whiskey club wants to use the space for their monthly meetings. But the first night goes wrong when one new member seems to want to go out of his way to irritate everyone. After the meeting, Reece finds that member dead in the alley behind his lounge. Fearing the hit this might do to his business, he starts investigating. Can he find the killer?

I met the author this spring, so I’ve been looking forward to this book since then. And I really enjoyed it. It captures the cozy vibes well with the setting and the characters. I’d be interested in visiting, between murders, of course. I could really feel the love the characters have for each other. The mystery starts well, and doesn’t waiver on the way to the logical climax. I might have a niggle or two with it, but I’m being nitpicky here. Reece has recently come out to himself, and I appreciated how that subplot was handled as well. If you are looking for a new cozy series, you won’t go wrong picking this one up. Me? I’m waiting for the sequel.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

I started looking forward to this book when I first heard about it last April and it did not disappoint! Reece Parker has had an interesting year. He opened his dream, Subplot, a speakeasy with a library theme; he broke off his engagement with his long-time fiancée just a few months before the wedding and he found a dead body behind his recently opened business following a private event held there!
Even though this is a debut novel, the writing is much more sophisticated than I would expect from a novice author. The characters are full-bodied and interesting, the plot is well-paced and filled with twists that take you down some interesting paths. While I did have the killer on my suspect list, he was not as near to the top as he obviously should have been! I am excited to see where the author takes Reece, Ava, and the rest of the gang next.
I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. My opinion is you need to get yourself to your favorite bookseller and preorder it today!

Whiskey Business by Adrian Andover is a charming read, and I hope it's the first of many mysteries in the Mixology Lounge Mystery series.

Reece is a main character that you really want to root for. He has just opened a literary themed cocktail lounge in his small town of Hope Mills, PA and is excited for the grand opening of his new business. But when a whiskey club meeting goes wrong and a body is found in the alley behind the buildings, things take a dark turn.

I loved the setting of this story. The town and Subplot both had a very cozy feel that make it inviting. And as Reece went around town and talked with various people, I really enjoyed all of the side characters as well. That's why I want more books - because there are so many characters we have yet to learn about!

If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, I think you'll want to check this one out. It's very well written and inviting. I was rooting for Reece the entire time, as he worked to solve the mystery as well as figure things out in his personal life.

This is a cozy mystery by a new author, it is his first published book. I really enjoyed it, especially as it was a new offering. It was a little simple in the beginning, but grew as it went along. A few of the characters felt like caricatures in the beginning, but also grew as the book progressed. I really liked the setting, and loved the literary themed bar, Subplot. I look forward to seeing the next book in the series when it comes out next year. The author did a good job with the relational parts of the characters, and I look forward to seeing how they grow on their own, and how they grow together. This was a book club book for me, and I was lucky enough to meet the author at our last meeting. He is a really nice person, and very humble. I really enjoyed meeting him and hearing some of the background to how he came up with the plot and settings. I recommend you give it a try !

Recommend to fans of mysteries and cozy mysteries.

Reece Parker opens up his literary themed cocktail lounge to a whiskey club where one of the members is murdered shortly after storming out. Worried that his new business could be in jeopardy, Reece decides to start asking questions about the victim to find the killer. He is also dealing with personal issues and figuring out how to tell his parents that he's gay, and that that's why he called off his engagement.
I really enjoyed this book! I found Reece to be very likeable and level headed, he didn't jump to conclusions or run head first into danger. I would love to visit a lounge like Subplot, the author did such a wonderful job of describing both the atmosphere and the cocktails. It sounds like a fun place to hang out.
Thank you to the author for the ARC. I can't wait for the next book!

After breaking off his engagement in pursuit of a more authentic life, Reece Parker—talented mixologist and proprietor of the literary-themed speakeasy Subplot—channels his passion into making his new venture a success. This is such a great addition to the cozy mystery world. The book is full of heart, humor, and healthy dose of delicious sounding drinks! (And this comes from someone who doesn't drink at all).

Reece is a likeable lead character, and his internal struggles made him seem even more real. It's nice to have a new LGBTQA+ character on the scene. Plus, the supporting characters are just amazing. I want to be best friends with his friends and also a child of his amazing parents. You can feel the love oozing from the book and honestly I can't wait for another addition in this series.

Plus, there is a cat. Spoiler alert, I love cats.

This is amazing new author. I felt like he has been writing forever.

Reece is trying over come a breakup with his fiancée so he open a literary bar/lounge in his home town. Let’s say the first night doesn’t go as planned when he find one of member of whisky club dead in the alley. On top of his troubles the police office is the brother of his ex-fiancée so to clear his name and to keep his new business alive he sets out to find the murderer. On top of the mystery the characters in the books are well written to where you like the right away. Can’t wait for the next book in this series. Well worth reading.

Small quaint town, loveable characters, an array of mixology and a dead body.
Who wouldn't want to go to a mixology lounge hidden behind a bookcase located in an Italian restaurant in Hope Mills, PA? Reese has a lot on his plate, an engagement break up, finding the courage to come out, opening the lounge, dealing with some not so nice people and finding a dead body. Eager to clear his name and keep the reputation of Subplot in good standing with the community, Reese goes looking for answers but will it cost him his life?

This is such a fun book and I look forward to reading more in the Mixology Lounge Mystery Series by Adrian Andover!

Surprise Mystery with a Twist

Whiskey Business, a Mixology Lounge Mystery, started out like any other standard cozy mystery, but the twist with the main character, added fresh flavor and interest to the usual cozy mystery trope. The writing is good and the plot interesting. The characters are pleasant and add plenty of red herrings. It also handled a sensitive subject with grace and dignity. Bravo! This is a good start to new series and I look forward to reading more in the future.

I wish the cocktail lounge, Subplot, was real! When Reese Parker, the owner of the trendy new cocktail lounge, finds a dead body near the dumpster behind his building, he is determined to prove neither he nor his business was involved. Both relatable and charming, Reese is the kind of protagonist you can’t help cheering for.

Andover artfully weaves together a well-crafted mystery with Reese’s real-life struggles. I’m already looking forward to his next step forward!
