A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled: A Sapphic Why-Choose Paranormal Romance

Rate this book
As a succubus, I’ve always preyed on boys. (Of age boys!) I don’t kill them, only take their energy that they’re all too willing to give. But lately, men and boys have seemed so dull. So basic.

In my first semester of college, away from my clan for the first time, I discovered how incredible girls are. So soft. So hot! How had I never noticed?

Week one, I met Piper, probably the cutest human I’d ever seen. She liked me! And she kissed me! After that … everything changed. Suddenly, I saw all the girls around me. Suddenly, I yearned for them. Like Yaz, the dancer. And Maja, the ice queen; though she can just be so awful.

How could I navigate my desires: wanting to kiss them, date them, love them, and still keep my true nature secret? This wasn’t what succubi did!

If I wanted to survive college among the humans, I needed to figure it out!

And not let it distract me from dangerous things … like that professor who always looks at me like he knows what I am, and doesn’t like it.

A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled is a super spicy sapphic why-choose paranormal romance set at a university in Chicago.

A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled is a Fantasy Why-Choose Romance. I was so damn fortunate to get a sneak peak of this beauty to read.

This was a first for me and I'm so fucking honored that I got to read this chapter by chapter and edit by edit. I was literally the first person that got a glimpse of this sweet baby. Once the ARCs are out you definitely need to snag this quick!

I absolutely love the way the author wrote this story. When I first heard about this I couldn't wait to stick my grabby little hands into this and have a taste. Urban fantasy is where my love of books really took off so it felt great coming back to that, especially with some succubus reading materials. I don't normally go to why choose romances but the few I have read in the past I've enjoyed immensely.

I love the writing style and the way everything blends. I refuse (and I'm going to try hard not to) to give out spoilers. The MFC is Gwen and she is so fun and charismatics. She is a succubus here on earth trying to fit in and learning the ropes as a college student. Being in her mind and seeing her thoughts before her decisions is so much fun and I am obsessed with her sass. Most of the side characters are delightful. Each one is so very different but they all bring something to the table.

Besides the characters I really enjoyed learning more about Polyamorous relationships. I'm not going to lie I just vibe with what's happening and I'm not schooled on certain terms. As the characters are learning how to maneuver in their new relationships and sexuality it feels like you are right their with them. I like that something isn't just in the book with no knowledge and the reader is just expected to know what is happening and understand it. This felt like a gentle education and that felt nice being included.

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Penelope Horne. I love how the polyamory is handled in this novel. I feel like a lot of people can easily get distracted by the sex of it all but polyamory can be easy and complicated at times because it's extra emotions. Extra feelings to juggle. I feel like this was such a great book to introduce someone to polyamory. I also really enjoyed how this author handled that society always treats men who sleep around like gods and women like we are dirty. I feel like that came from a very genuine place and I really appreciated how real it felt. I love Gwen, I feel like she is perfectly imperfect. She doesn't have all the answers and she's growing and learning just like everyone else. I loved that even with everything else going on, there was still a bit of mystery mixed in. The spice was also written really well in my opinion and it didn't distract from the overall story. It honestly added to it and helped highlight navigating relationships. I was so lucky and honored to get to beta read this novel.

Thanks to the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Paranormal Romance is definitely not really my cup of tea, but if the plot synopsis sounds interesting, I'm always open to reading outside my comfort zone. I'm so happy I did!

While there was a lot of "romance," it actually fit in well with the rest of the plot. I loved the coming-of-age story for Gwen - just a regular succubus in the human world, trying to discover herself in college. It was actually really perfect, how she navigated meeting her needs as a succubus with those of a young woman on her own for the first time. The characters were so unique and lovable. I really appreciated the commentary on topics such as consent, misogyny, and exploring one's own sexuality and identity. The little "smash the patriarchy" moments were also *chef's kiss*."

Definitely check this out if you like a fun, unserious monster/paranormal romance with humor and a ton of heart!

New #romantasy read! Imagine going from having your average college experience to literally fighting for your life.

Gwen, is a 24 year old succubus (google this haha) who typically preys on male college freshmen at Burnham-Root. Until she meets Piper. Surely who i expected to “school” her on human relationships, when she starts to develop feelings for her. The book switches from multiple POVs, of her friend Group which I liked. Poor Gwen didn’t know what she was getting into at this school. Even being suspected for the disappearing of a guy who tried to assault her. Then one professor at the school starts to threaten and even tortured Gwen about what she really is and her friends come together to save her 🥹

Side note, it’s fun reading a book and you learn a new word. In this case it’s cornucopia for me lol

A fun read! Lots going on in here. A wayward succubus releases October 28

A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled by Penelope Horne 5/5✨️

•I was given an early invitation to this world and it was such a fun time! The main character Gwen is a college student who's left her family and community for the first time. Navigating college is particularly challenging for Gwen because she feeds off the energy of the guys at her school...because she's a succubus...

•Here you will find characters that are undeniably themselves...even if they don't really know what all that entails just yet. A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled focuses on queer characters, supernatural beings, and dickhead humans who make it difficult to be queer and supernatural.
