Losing Her

Rate this book
“I loved her and she left. Maybe I wasn’t enough. Maybe I’ll never be enough.” I’ve been thinking these words since before we even got together.

Everything is new. The old no longer has a place here. Physical items are easy to replace. I'm constantly battling the ones that aren't.

Every thought and memory I have is stained.

By you.

You weren't even there for half of them.

How is she still present even though she left?

I can do this. I’m going to survive losing her.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one was a mess for me. I wanted to love it, but it didn't work for me at all.

My biggest issue was Max. This story was from his POV and partially told from the past, and partially told through the present. He made me completely ragey through this book. I'm not sure if he's redeemable for me at this point, but I guess time will tell. I was so disappointed in him. I know he was going through a lot, but his actions were inexcusable. I don't even know what to think about him... As random as it may seem, I was also really upset about the Boss girl's mom and the whole moving on/Zeus thing. What is up with that? I was taken off guard with it all.

I feel like this is a really ranty review, and I don't want it to be that way... the writing was great as always. Mariah Dietz is a strong writer and I never have complaints about that. I'm guessing people who love their reads angsty loved this one, it was just too much for me. Still, as soon as the third book is out on audio I'm going to brave it and hope something epic happens and there is some kind of redemption. We shall see!

I'm glad I continued with this series because it did get better...Yay! This book was much less wordy and a helluva lot more angsty. However, things aren't all roses.

This book is told from Max's POV and there is a lot of ~sort of~ retelling...meaning it's the same story with a few new things thrown in. At first, it was a bit boring but towards the end, things got interesting.

As we know from the end of the last book, Ace has taken off. She left Max and her family and everyone is taking it hard.

Max is going through hell...there's no other way to say it. He's a bit extreme trying to eradicate anything that reminds him of Ace. And then of course, he does what a lot of guys do when they try to get over someone.

There are a lot of intriguing new happenings that has kept my interest and has me starting the next book right away. Be still my angsty heart! 😉

Apesar disso, vale a leitura.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Losing Her is the second book in the His Series by author Mariah Dietz. As the follow up to Becoming His, we get this story straight from Max. Max gave in and took a chance, a risk. He loved. And he lost. In the days that follow the devastating news the Bosse family received, we learn everything we ever wanted to know about Max.

Now there isn’t much I can say about the storyline of this book without giving away details of book one; but what I can say is that I loved every second of this story. Even the painful ones. We get Max in his early days, before coming home; we get to see the moments that had him falling in love with Ace and we watch as he tries to move forward when the past won’t loosen its grip on his heart.

Oh.My.God. I loved this book. I was a mess through most of this book. There were times when I’d become so lost in a memory Max was sharing that I’d forget. Then it would happen. He’d be in the present and alone. And my heart would break all over again. I could not get enough of his point of view. I loved seeing the way he saw Ace, the way he remembered the good and the bad moments. This book could have been have another hundred pages of Max’s story and it still would not have been enough.

But as much as this story was all Max, there was no way to forget the rest of the characters. They played their roles perfectly and I’ve come to love them all so much. Watching them all deal with the fall out after the end of book one, everyone loss; every single one of them. It was heartbreaking to see the shift of such a happy & loving family enter the dark days that were ahead of them.

As I approached the 80ish% mark I started to freak out a bit. I knew this was going to have a cliffhanger ending and leading up to the last chapters, I had a million thoughts as to what the hell was going to happen. It wasn’t as bad and I expected, but still, just one more page would have put me at ease. The wait until June is going to be tough.

I can’t express how glad I am that I accepted Becoming His as an ARC. It was taking a chance on a new author, a blind leap based off of a blurb that caught my eye. There is something comforting about the style that the author has with her words. I can’t really place what it is, but it’s there. A huge thank you to Ms. Dietz for indulging this reader with an ARC of this book, it was so much more than I expected from a reverse POV installment. Having finished Becoming His just prior to starting this, I was concerned that it would feel too similar, but Max’s voice was so unique and the way he laid it all out there made it seem like I was learning about their love story for the first time.

If you are a true fan of romance this is a fantastic series to check out. It’s not all pure hearts and flowers, it has many angsty moments and hard realities that are faced; but it is like any true love story; the ones that aren’t always pretty. I can’t wait to see how these two battle through all that has happened in the final installment of this series, Finding Me.

This book was all over the place for me. I had no warning when it would be a past memory or a current event. Sometimes he was talking in first person and at other times it was like he was talking to Ace. Basically it bounced around a lot. It made me lose a lot of interest in the story but most likely I'll trudge through the last book since I've made it this far.

oooph. This book was a hard read for me.
I was nervous as to where the book was going to end.

and if you know me well - you know that I have to read the end before the middle sometimes. I need to know my characters are okay.

I didn't ... I stayed strong. i just had to read a few books in the middle of this one to finish.

I love ACE and MAX. I need them together and strong.

Ms Dietz did an excellent job of writing in 2nd person. I REALLY REALLY REALLY enjoyed that.

Losing Her (His #2) by Mariah Dietz
4 stars!!

“You lied to me Ace. You fucking lied to me.”

This book is the second book in this trilogy and is Max’s story. This book was so emotional that at times I hurt, I physically hurt. As I read, I felt everything, I lived through everything and at times I cried…a lot. One thing that Mariah Dietz manages to deliver is a raw, emotional, gritty and compelling story, one that I couldn’t and didn’t want to put down.

I really cannot say anything about this story because it would give too much away and would spoil it for everyone. All I can say is that as you will have read Becoming His, you will know the intense relationship that Max and Ace has, you know that they share that soul mate bond, their love for each other was intense, full on and true and a love like that only comes once a life time. So when a relationship loses its direction, hits the skids and just generally veers in a direction you don’t want, you feel the pain and you feel for the parties involved.

Written in Max’s POV in the second person the way this book was delivered was unusual but compelling none the less. By pouring out feelings and memories you could not help but feel the emotional anguish, the raw pain and the complete and utter devastation that Max was going through. It was real, intensely real and upsettingly real. On the opposite side though this book was perfectly balanced by Max’s memories, memories of good times and memories that were so vivid you could picture them all and you couldn’t help but temporarily forget the bad and bask in the good.

“I want you to know everything about me – even the bad, because when you look at me with that smile, my smile, I feel like even my ugly isn’t so bad.”

Max took a huge leap of faith by getting involved with Ace; he had taken a vow to never put himself in that situation of losing a loved one. He had seen the devastating effect it could have; he had already lived through it with his parents and so never, ever wanted to get put into that position himself. He always chose a woman he could never fall in love with for that reason but along came Ace and changed all that. He gave her everything, heart, body and soul, so when Ace loses her way after the devastating news the Bosse family received you knew that it was going to be hard.

“It’s pain that slows down time, that makes seconds feel like hours, as you debate the reason to continue breathing.”

Throughout this story though we are still treated to all the other characters that we knew to come and love in Becoming His and they all had their part to play in Max’s story. The never ending ripples of the Bosse news in Becoming His are felt through everyone, they all deal in their own way but they are always there for each other. They are one big family, but you know that this family will never be the same again.

As the book progressed but heart was getting heavy, nothing was going the way I wanted and I couldn’t help but have that impending fear of doom. Knowing that Mariah Dietz loves a cliff hanger I was worried as to what else could possibly happen that could make a bad situation even worse. I will say that the cliff hanger is not a bad one; in fact I feel it ended in a good place that only leaves you salivating for more.

“How does the entire world appear to be surviving this nightmare of losing her.”

I cannot wait to read the conclusion of this story and I will be eagerly anticipating the climax to Max and Ace’s story, I just hope and pray that it goes the way I want it to!!

I absolutely loved this book. I’ve loved the whole series, so far. I continue to think about these characters. They’re everywhere. Not a day goes by, that I’m not reminded of them. I want them in my life.
Losing her picks up right where Becoming His ends, however, not everything was happening the way it appeared, following David’s death. The effect David’s death has on everyone’s life is far reaching. Not just the Bosse Family. David was just as much of a father figure/friend to Max as he was to his own children. When David died, it crushed Ace to the point that she wasn’t able to function. She felt overwhelmed. She didn’t know what to do, what people expected of her. So Ace did what Ace does best. She ran.
We follow Max on his journey of recovering after the loss of a friend and father figure, as well as his soul mate. Luckily for Max he has the support of his friends and family during this difficult time. I feel that the only thing that gave Max any comfort is the letter that David had written for him. What that letter says we really don’t know, other than to let her go. That broke my heart. I may have tossed my kindle and sent a not very nice message to Mariah!
We do get to look back on happy memories with Ace from Max’s POV. I loved that, seeing how he saw her and her family, it warmed my heart. Most of the situations are new, some we just getting a different perspective. My heart hurt for Max while reading this. You could feel all of his love for Ace, his anger over her leaving and his frustration for not being able to fully let her go. I loved that. I liked being in Max’s head, as crazy and heartbreaking as it was.
I think the hardest part for me was that they found people who made them happy. Seeing Ace laugh and smile and it not being directed at Max, crushed me. Max moving on so quickly, I understand he was trying to dull his broken heart. He did it in typical Max fashion, if you love Max, like I do, you will know what I mean.
Here’s the BIG question: If you are soul mates, does time apart weaken that connection? Make it stronger? Can you really move on?
I laughed, cried and many breakdowns with this book. I love Ace and I love Max. I can’t wait for Book Three. Read it! Terri

My heart hurts to the extent I can't breath 5 gold stars

OMG! This one was soooooo much harder to read than the last. Losing Her picks up where Becoming His left off. This one is from Max's POV where as the first book was all Ace. It really, really sucks to read Max's perspective. His thoughts and emotions reel you in and make you wanna weep.

Btw, if you haven't read the 1st book DO NOT read on. Go 1-click the 1st book and then come and read this.

So Max always seen Ace even when she thought he didn't know that she existed. Boy was he aware but he's been fighting from the beginning to not let her in. Max's past has made him into the young man he is. His relationship with his father is what it all boils down to. All the misunderstanding that Ace and Max had was because of both their insecurities and their pasts.

This is a book about losing love and trying to reconcile your heart into moving on. But how do you move on when everything reminds you of her. Everything one reminds you of her. How do you forget a person that you instinctively think of and whisper to in the middle of the night. This is Max's story about his love for Ace and how he copes with the eventual loss of her. I cried, my heart hurt to the extent I had to stop. I loved this book and I would absolutely agree with Mariah and declare, this one's my favorite in the series.

I've always had a soft corner for male POV's and this one's my top favorite. Thank you Mariah for the gift. I'm immensely happy that I got to fall in love with Max. Dying to read book 3. So 1-click this baby if you wanna know whether Max does get to forget the one true love of his life.

I was fortunate to read an ARC of Book 2. I loved it...I needed a glass of wine or two during reading...but boy did I love it.

I love Mariah Dietz. I love Ace and Max...and now (having read her brilliant second book) I'm quietly banging my head on my desk.

This author excels at 'real romance.' Max and Ace feel like people you know, people you're rooting for. Book 2 is a walk-through what it's like for Max after Ace is gone. It's real...it's raw...and yes, it's frustrating.

Without giving much away, this book is a welcome peek into Max's mind. I loved his memory-lane walks with Ace...and I hated Erin (passionately...I REALLY hated Erin).

I have to believe that two people who so obviously love each other so much, will somehow figure it all out. I have fallen far too hard for Ace and Max to believe there could be a happier ending than for them to find their way back to each other. Until book 3, I (and I am sure the rest of Mariah's readers) will be waiting for their happy ending.

**JOSIE'S REVIEW**

Please read book 1, Becoming His before reading Losing Her.

Let me say, I did not read book 1 when I started Losing Her and that was a big mistake. I should have read it then I would have understood Ace’s character and the dynamics of their friendship, relationship and their break up a lot better. This book was written through the male character’s POV. I love getting inside the head of a man

The author starts off this book with Max trying to deal with the loss of Ace. He is dealing with his hurt and he’s afraid of reaching out and going back to his Ace. The author takes readers back to Max’ troublesome past, his move to California, his search for his father and his life while in Alaska. What I loved the most about this book is seeing how Max met Ace and why he fell in love with her and all the pain and angst that leads up to Ace and Max taking a chance. We are shown in this book how hard it is for Max to move on without Ace when everything reminds him of her. The sad part is the poor decisions he makes during this time. I felt Max’ pain but when I read their exchange and their Break up (which he says he did not do), I felt Max did not take responsibility for his role in things.

After the days the followed when Ace left Max, The Bosse family receives some devastating news. Things really get worse within the Max and Ace drama. Max is beside himself and unable to deal with a life without her. This is where he gets the support and at times the truth about how he is handling things. Max is not the only one that has to deal with losing Ace. Everyone else is also taking the end of their relationship hard. When I read how the Bosse family was so loving, close and happy it was hard to read how they suffered and dealt with the change in their lives.

I pushed through wanting to learn more about Max and how he would deal without Ace. It was hard at times, frustrating and over whelming. He expresses his past with Ace in a way that you feel his love for her but without her in his life is too much for him. Don’t get me wrong you are also going to get angry with his character for some of the things he does.

This story is not a long one but it is full of twists, turns, angst and heartache. This love story not easy nor was it easy to read. I am not sure where the author will take Book 3 in this series, but I would like to see where the future takes Ace and Max and the rest of the gang. As I mentioned in the start of my review, I did not read book 1 before reading this, and I think it is important to get all the facts about both characters before reading this book. I am still uncertain as to how I view Max at the moment because the author does not sugarcoat his pain but I will say his actions were unpleasant. However, when you lose the person love we all act differently. I am really interested in seeing in what direction the author will go in the next book.

My heart is so FULL after finishing this. I don’t even know how to FEEL. I’m overwhelmed with emotions. Book one I loved. Book two? It made my heart beat. And I am not sure if it will ever stop.

“Loving someone makes you stronger.”

Losing Her starts right off from where Becoming His left off. I will try to avoid spoilers for this and the first book as this story is to be experienced. You must live their journey. This is Max’s story. And it is SO much more than a retelling of the first book. It far surpasses that. We are allowed deep into Max’s broken yet, beautiful heart. His feelings on Ace and her family. How he’s no longer the man he once was. How he’s barely living, but surviving. The entire crew is in this one as the first one and there are even some surprises. They all deal with the aftermath of the end of the first book. We are once again, as readers, immersed into the Bosse and Miller family. And my heart enjoyed every minute of it.

“I never realized how confidence is like glass; strong and protective until it is hit just right. Then it shatters.”

Excuse me, but where has Max Miller been all my life? No, seriously. Wherever he has been, I am so glad I found him. Sigh. Or maybe he found me! The author is a truly gifted writer. Her words evoke emotions. Her writing reflects how much she pours her heart into her characters. As I write this review, I am still not over this story. It’s been a good hour since I put it down, and I cannot wait to get back to reading to start book 3. This author has truly and easily become one of my favorites.

“Had you just been waiting for someone to finally catch you?”

I love romance. I really do. And until this point, I am not sure if there has been a book that truly captured how fiercely a man can love a woman. Max loves Ace with his entire being. His soul. He loves her slowly, loudly. Immensely. His love is overwhelming and powerful. The author writes words straight from Max’s heart. His words are beautiful, poetic. Ace is Max’s heart. And you cannot truly love deeply without your heart.

“I would choose you every time, Ace.”

This book solidified my emotional investment in this story and the characters. I finished with tears in my eyes. I didn’t realize how hard I was gripping my kindle. If there is one thing I love about reading is how it makes me FEEL. And this did more than that. Losing Her is a beautifully written, captivating story. I cannot begin to explain how much of a journey this was for me. I did more than read this story. I lived it.

Once again this book was really really good.. I loved that it was in Max's POV..I loved seeing the flip sides..

My heart was breaking through out this whole book,... So many great stories so many hearts to heal...omg Aces mother is so dumb..lol

I literally spent the whole book like "don't do that Max"...But I really enjoyed this whole journey from book one to now. This book left me with the "what is going to happen" Cliffhanger. But the best books are the ones who make thirsty to read the next.

I am in love with this book and the character that Mariah has written.

Another great book...I need book 3 ..now...;)

This entire series enthralled me. I loved both Max and Ace, but most of all, I loved them together. They had a beautiful relationship and I truly enjoyed watching their connection grow. These books made my heart ache in the most delicious way.
In this particular book in the series, we get a look back at things from Max's POV, along with a new material. I'm usually not a fan of alternate POVs, but I thought the author did a wonderful job of giving a fresh perspective. I felt as if I gained a great deal of new information from those parts of the story and truly enjoyed the creative retelling. I highly recommend these books!

This gets a 4.5 stars from me. The only reason it didn't get the whole 5 stars was because it is written in 2 different ways which was really confusing at the start and at some points throughout the book. I did love this though. It is written from Max's point of view, from when he was back in Atlanta to the present tense. When in the present it was written in the same style as the first book, however when he would talk about the past and he was reliving the memories of him and Ace together it was if he was talking to Ace. It was really great to see everything from Max's point of view. His time in Atlanta shows how he met Jameson and Landon and also it told you why he wanted to become a doctor, so you really got a great insight into Max with this. It was clear how much he loved Ace from the first book but hearing him describe how he felt and how he saw Ace really squeezes at your heart and if you don't love Max before you definitely would after this. After the first book there were things I was hoping to know more about and through Max you get those answers and you also get scenes that we didn't see in the first book which I thought was really special.

(Spoiler if you haven't read the first book....)

Seeing how Ace leaving affected Max brought tears to my eyes and you hurt for him. Saying that, there were times I wanted to scream at him and tell him what not to do and what he should do. I love a book that can get you as involved as that. I love that we still see plenty of the other characters as they really help make the story. Without them this book wouldn't be as great as it is, but with saying that I don't want you to think the main characters lack anything because they are just as brilliant.
Part of me doesn't want to read the third book just because I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I finish, I just love this series that much! I also can't wait to get stuck in though as I'd love to know what has been happening with Ace!

**I received the book by the Author for an honest review**

3.5 stars!

This is the second book in the series and is told from Max's POV. I felt like even though this book doesn't necessarily need all these books, it was nice to read from his POV.

I loved knowing how he grew up. What happens in his life. Why he is the way he is. You you know something big happened I'm the last book and this in this one people are going through the after effects of it.

I never realized how confidence is like glass: strong and protective until it is hit just right. Then it shatters.

There is so much emotion that came with this book that I had to stop and gather myself a few times lol

I love Max & Ace together. They are the perfect couple. You see all their ups and downs that made them feel like they were a real life couple. I loved it.

Now I'm not going to say much because I'm not going to spoil the book for those who still have to read it but you all should read it!!!

I will say that again, the books could've been a little smaller. It felt a little repetitive to me.

You'll need to read the first one in order to know what's happening here! All in all a good book by the Author!

"You could have asked for the moon and I would have worked to find a way."

I fell in love with Ace in 'Becoming His', so I wasn't sure what to expect with 'Losing Her' (since it's in Max's POV). Mariah Dietz surpassed my expectations with this novel. In book 1, you have the angst right from the start that gets your heart racing with anticipation. In Losing Her, the pace and dynamic are incomparable. We get the inside track to Max's heart and how he's handling life since Ace left. The longer Ace is gone, the more we see Max start to break down and head down a road that we aren't used to seeing from him. Emotions steadily increase though out until you're left feeling helpless, right along with Max.

I love that we're given information regarding the present and the past. You get to view different experiences through Max's eyes, with his voice. You are also given insight into moments that weren't talked about in book 1 (like drunken lady bits... lol). My heart hurt right along with Max anytime we were in the present and you realized that Ace really was gone. Seeing Ace from Max's perspective helped me really appreciate how strong of a bond they had. The way he describes her and the little things she does (like look over her shoulder and smile) makes you realize that they really are two halves of a whole.

I was given an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can't wait for book #3 to see how their story ends.

I read this little gem weeks ago and it still hasn't left me. The emotions and connection to max and ace are still fresh. The seond person POV took a bit to get used to but once I did I realized it was in the second person pov that I truly connected with Max and practically became him. I experienced everything he went through as if I lived it myself. Words somehow seems pointless here because to me it needs to be felt. It's different but it worked for me. You will either connect or you won't and there is no in between. For me, it was just what I needed at the right time. Her writing is beautiful and the characters are just so freaking fun and and real. I have to be honest though, I have a very deep connection with Ace and I missed her. I missed her so much I think I am still going through withdrawal. I laughed, I cried and got frustrated with Max but I enjoyed it overall. Kendall and his friends kept him in check and kept me entertained when needed. Kendall is such a fun character, I can't get enough of her. As I said the second person will catch ya off guard but if you can stick out and continue you may find that sometimes different isn't so bad after all:)

Beautiful ~ Deep ~ Strong

If you’re looking for something different, well written, that will make you feel, look no further! There are large parts of the story that are just…deep…painful to the heart….real…so real. And since it’s so well written….you feel it ALLLLL!

Mariah Dietz has given us a continuation of the His series and it’s in Max’s POV. Yup, Max’s POV!!! HOLLER!!!!!

Mariah took a great risk with this story, there is something different about Losing Her. You will notice it when it happens, and I think the reading community is going to love the change. No, I'm not going to tell you, silly! Losing Her will grip your heart and it doesn’t let up. I was amazed at how easily I fell into Max’s world. I think a reason I felt Max so much was because of the switch that Mariah did when writing the story (again you will understand when you read it).

Yes, you will still get to hear about Ace and the Bosse gang, have no fear!

Book one of the His Series (Becoming His), was one of my top favorite reads of 2014. I have no doubt that come the end of 2015 the rest of series will be at the top of my 2015 list.

Losing Her is book two in the His series. It can not be read as a stand alone, you must read Becoming His first. In Losing Her we get the story through Max's eyes. I read Becoming His and I wasn't completed pulled into the story. I struggled with Becoming His. You might wonder why I would read the second book if I wasn't in love with the first book. Well I wanted to read book two because I really wanted to know what was next for Max and Ace. I'm glad I read Losing Her because it was great. I dd not struggle with this one at all. I was pulled in to the story right away and I stayed interested in the story the whole time.

I love Max. His story is a very emotional read. This is not a light read. We find out a lot more about Max and see how deep his love goes. There's a cliffhanger, that left me wanting more. I can't wait to read the next one.

I was most definitely not the biggest fan of Max in this book. Though I can understand where he was coming from, I just feel that he was making everything about him, and not about what was going on with Ace.

I'm not sure exactly what to say about this story without giving too much away. Though Max is still hoping and praying that Ace comes home, he's been letting his doubt rule his actions. He's not proud of what he's doing, but what else does a man do when the love of your life leaves with out a trace.

Then there's always that question that lingers, what will Max do when Ace comes home?

As I said, I can see where Max was coming from, but I'm still super upset with what he does. I'm hoping I fall in love with him in Finding Me.

Oh my heart! I think I fell a little more in love with Max throughout this book. Seeing how all the events took place through Max's eyes was eye opening. The pain and heartache. His love for Ace.... I was on pins and needles throughout the entire book. I was a complete mess reading this book. We get a peek at Max before he fell for Ace. We see the heartache he endures, the confusion to what is happening around him. The TRUE Max.

This series is amazing. This is not a stand alone book and must be read after Becoming His. I guarantee that you will fall in love with the Bosse girls and Max and his friends. Once you start, you just can't stop. You can't get enough.

Losing Her is Max’s story. It technically picks up where Becoming His left off, but there’s a little bit of overlap as we take an intense and brutal tour through Max’s memories. The timeline gets a little skewed as we are almost literally thrown inside of Max’s brain and the line between current events and memories gets a little blurred.

Ace is gone. She ran away and Losing Her takes us through the aftermath of her decision. Max is left to process the entirety of their relationship and try to move on. It is a gritty, brutal process. Being inside Max’s head is often painful. My heart bled for him. This story was frustrating and infuriating and heartbreaking and so, so miserable. All of these things are exactly what needed to happen as Ms. Dietz weaves this story to its conclusion.

If you haven’t read Becoming His, this book will make no sense. And you’re not going to be able to read this book without reading Finding Me so you may want to just go ahead and have that one on hand, because this one ends abruptly. It’s not even a cliffhanger so much as it just ends in the middle of Max’s story, leaving an open thread for Ms. Dietz to wave into the final chapter for Ace and Max.

I hated this story so much – in the very best way possible. I know it had to happen to get us to a resolution. It was so hard to learn the depths of Max’s despair and to watch him struggle to heal and move on, but it was a necessary evil and a realistic look at the emotional impact of losing a great love. Please encase your Kindle in extra padding – it may not be safe from impulse throwing while reading this book! ~ Shelly, 4 stars

I loved this book so much more than the first one. In book one, we follow Ace, and see the world and the relationship through her eyes only. In this second installment, we follow Max. We get to read about what he did all that time in Alaska. His time spent aboard the fishing boat was great to read about. We learn how he met those friends he is always with in the first book, and why they're as close as brothers.

Speaking of brothers, we are given an insight into Max's relationships with his own brothers, and how he and his family were affected by his father leaving. I loved getting his back story. Losing Her mostly picks up where Becoming His left off, and we get to see all the despair and desolation that Ace only alluded to in her book.

Max also has numerous flash backs. There are a few scenes that are taken from the first book, and re-told in his point of view. These were well written and interesting, but not my favorite. I've been there once. What was really special in these flashbacks were the scenes that Ace had mentioned, but not described. A trip home with Max for his brother's wedding. A camping trip. Reading these for the first time, and in Max's point of view really makes their relationship and love seem so much more. Just more.

When not flashing back, Max spends most of the book trying to keep his head above water as he spirals through depression. You can't hate him for the choices he makes, even though they are self destructive, because you can see him actively trying. He is trying to get on with his life, he is still trying to be a good person, and if he's letting go of Ace, it's unwilling and only because she left, and he has to go on. It's also a heart wrenching example of how one person can mean so much to so many people, and how their loss (especially a self inflicted loss) can be so detrimental to their happiness and their other relationships.

Family, friends, even the dog are negatively impacted by Ace leaving them. I'm going to need to know what the hell she was thinking in the third book before even I can think of forgiving her. Usually I end a cliffhanger with an idea of where it's going, and what I am hoping for. Not so much this one. I really am just along for the ride, and hoping it doesn't hurt too much on the way. ~ George, 4 stars

I believe from the beginning of Max and Ace's first sighting of each other, their hearts recognized the other as two parts of the same whole. Their souls knew before they were fully introduced or in the beginning discovery of friendship. Unfortunately, they were too young to understand the significance of such a connection.
Yet, their hearts knew each other.

In these two stories, there is so much subtext, such a complex history for each of the major characters. How the author weaves that history into one final understanding between these two people is a intricate and compound undertaking. The prose is beautifully written. It portrays the very poignancy of each episodic memory and its significance.

To understand the emotional impact it took for Ace to Become His, the reader should begin the first episode as it leads us into Losing Her, the point of view from Max. The unraveling of his memories and the richness of his feelings for Ace is beautiful, for each struggle to brings us closer to the resulting chasm. A divide so great, neither can stand too near the fallout. As you read the shattered pieces begin to puzzle together and you are left wondering...

To understand those more complex historical issues, the reader must delve into the primary characters points of views to discover which memories pinpoint the pivotal moments involved in their emotional reactions.
Their points of view will help the reader grasp the roadmap explaining the couple's complex interplay of push and pull. These innate reactions are traced back to each of their familial relationships. Max and Ace's emotional impulses have been suppressed from everyday interactions but continue to influence each character's behavior. In other words, the impact of Max and Ace's memories each results in their exaggerated preoccupation with people's potential reactions. This learned coping mechanism is directly responsible for their present dilemma. The his and her points of views provide insight as why they are so far from reaching contentment within themselves, that alone is why they cannot trust another person.

They each continue to throw roadblocks.
Both of Max and Ace's underlying flaws brought about the separation between them and mutual denial for the shared responsibility is a slow and painful discovery. One has to wonder, if roads will continue to diverge or will they come together? I think learning to be happy singularly, will bring the understanding that resolution isn't always a mutually shared discovery. Sometimes, one must confront his or her own flaws before he or she can begin to seek a mutually stable relationship.

People tend to forget happy endings are not forged from the merging of two people to become stronger but from the strength each person has singularly when combined enhances a successful chance together. It's a choice to combine. The strongest relationship is not burdened by undermining insecurities it is held together by mutual desire to support and confront difficulties as a united force.

The innate pull Max has towards Ace is fundamental, I can only wonder if he's strong enough to let her go....like her father, Dr. Bosse wrote, when Ace panics she runs, but she didn't run this time, Ace choose to begin again without the baggage. She planned her road to survival. Will Max take the time to begin again diverging a path away from his drowning insecurities? Will he survive it as well?

I received an advanced reading copy of Losing Her, in exchange for an honest review.

Lastly, my first exposure to this author began with my purchase of Becoming His. I love this series so much, in addition to my ARC, I PURCHASED a copy of Losing Her, It is worth my time and money to invest in a copy for my archives because the story is so riveting that the return on my money is a thousandfold! It's a keeper.

When the second book in a series or trilogy starts out rehashing events from the first book from other characters POV, I tend to get a bit grumpy. I don’t want to rehash events, it gets boring. So I am sure you can imagine my great joy and excitement when I found this author had a brilliant plan that not only kept me invested in this book, I even gave it a higher rating than the first one.

When Becoming His ended, we knew that Ace had left. Her world was shattered with the losses she had endured, not knowing where she stood with Max, generally mentally giving up. I was confused why the author had skipped over major events in book one, but it makes sense now. She was going to let Max tell us yet not risk the thing I hate the most, rehashing past events.

So the unique part of this book is we get the missing pieces from book one AND we live the life of Max after Ace left him. It was like we were sitting on his shoulder, hearing him talk to her, longing for her touch, trying to move on and giving up on things in his life that use to mean something to him. Some of the choices he made in order to forget were dramatic and no matter where he went, he couldn’t escape the blonde hair memories of Ace. We are in for some shockers, as he is confronted with his past, truths that he didn’t know about and questions that will eat at him till he finds the answers.

Just as Max is beginning to understand why he acts the way he does, he also discovers more about Ace’s life while he was in Alaska and soon he understands her need to run. I think there is much more to the story of Ace’s mother that we will discover in book three but I was impressed how the author had me liking her till this book and now I can’t stand that woman.

The author allowed us to walk with Max in this 24/7 funeral that he called life. The what if’s, should haves, did she quit on me or did I quit on her merry go round was slowly destroying him. My heart broke for him, I was on an emotional roller coaster and my nerves were so raw I even broke down a few times over Zeus the dog. His life shattering, his friends tried to help till some just gave up and walked away. He not only lost Ace but he lost the Bosse family in his mind. It hurt too much to be with them, yet it hurt even more to be away from them.

While book one introduced us to the couple, this one captured your heart and kept it hostage till the final page. The cliff hanger made me weep because I wanted it to happen, I wanted things to go a certain way and before anyone could make a move the curtain dropped and we now wait, and not so patiently I might add.
