In The Secret of Spirit Lake, a young adult mystery with a gentle paranormal twist, we follow fourteen-year-old Amy, yanked away from her old life and dropped into a big yellow Victorian on a quiet Virginia lake. She ends up in the tower bedroom, where strange things start happening that point to a girl named Sally who used to live there. The story moves back and forth between Amy’s present-day summer of swim practices, new friends, and family tension, and the late 1930s life of a farm girl named Penny whose path slowly, uneasily, begins to overlap with the lake and the house Amy now calls home. The mystery sits in the space between those timelines, asking what really happened at Spirit Lake and what it means for the people still living there.

I really liked how the book uses that alternating structure. At first I was more invested in Amy, mostly because her voice feels so familiar: grumpy about her parents, irritated by younger siblings, convinced no one understands her, then slowly softening as she gets pulled into swim team life and real friendship. But Penny’s chapters crept up on me. Her world is harder and narrower, full of chores and exhaustion, and then that terrible fire that takes her parents hits with real emotional weight. The mystery works because those two stories start to rhyme. Amy is lonely and displaced; Penny is lonely and trapped. Sally is caught between them as a literal ghost, but also as this symbol of what happens when adults fail kids. The writing itself is clean and straightforward, the kind of YA prose that trusts younger readers to keep up while still feeling approachable. Short chapters keep things moving, and the ghost scenes are eerie without ever turning into nightmare fuel. There is a soft, almost cozy feel to a lot of the pages, even when the subject matter is dark.

What stood out to me most was the way the author chose to center safety and care instead of just creepiness. The ghost is sad more than scary, and the book keeps circling back to the question of who looks out for children when their parents can’t or won’t. You see it in Penny’s encounters with the state worker at the hospital, who is doing her best inside a rigid system, and in how Lucy and Henry neglect and emotionally abuse Hal and Millie behind the façade of a beautiful lake house. You see it again in Amy’s realization that her “annoying” little siblings are actually kind of adorable when she lets herself pay attention, and that her parents, while imperfect, are trying very hard to give their family a better life. As a YA mystery, the book leans more emotional than plot-twist-heavy, and sometimes the coincidences that help the girls solve the decades-old case feel a little convenient, but the emotional payoffs mostly earned my trust. I cared more about Millie hugging her long-lost brother on a sunny balcony than about every logistical detail lining up perfectly.

By the end, I felt like I’d spent a summer at the lake myself, watching Amy grow into her own skin, cheering through swim meets, and then sitting up way too late trying to fit together scraps of diaries and old letters with her and her friends. The paranormal element stays light, but the feelings underneath are not. The Secret of Spirit Lake is the kind of YA mystery I’d hand to a thoughtful middle schooler or young teen who likes ghost stories that are more about healing than horror, or to adults who enjoy warm, character-driven young adult fiction with a bit of intrigue. It would fit well in school and library book clubs, especially with readers who are ready to talk about grief, neglect, and found family in a safe way.

Two girls, separated by decades, are visited by a ghost who unveils a chilling mystery.

In 2023, Amy’s family relocates from upstate New York to a small lakeside community in North Carolina. The beautiful, newly renovated Victorian-style home, with its own space in the tower room, makes the move a little more bearable. But soon enough, strange things begin to happen in her room—a frigid breeze followed by the ghost of a young girl materializes. Through the ghost’s communication, Amy shares a connection with Penny, the nanny who lived in her room and disappeared decades ago.

Going back to 1935, fifteen-year-old Penny loses her parents in a tragic housefire and is forced to live with her estranged aunt and uncle, who treat her like a slave. She cares for their young children and becomes fiercely protective of five-year-old Hal, who receives daily beatings from Penny’s aunt. Penny’s life has become unbearably isolating, but she finds companionship with a ghost named Sally in her bedroom. Sally’s tragic demise was at the hands of Penny’s aunt, and now she floats around the tower room, stuck in limbo.

What does the ghost want from the girls, and how does it all connect?

The Secret of Spirit Lake by Jane Haltmaier is a coming-of-age mystery that offers teen and young adult readers exciting secrets and chilling revelations. Through the alternating perspective, this novel highlights the challenges that the girls face—Amy’s difficulties of being the new girl in Spirit Lake and Penny’s fight for survival as she finds herself in a dire situation. The addition of a ghostly form adds another layer of intrigue as it becomes the proverbial glue that bonds the girls.

Calling all amateur investigators! Readers who adore digging for information and piecing together clues will be immersed in this thrilling novel, from ghostly encounters to uncovering lost letters to DNA results. Haltmaier leaves no stone unturned in revealing the mystery of Spirit Lake. Amy and her new friends are determined to help Sally uncover what happened to Penny and the children she nannied, and they go to great depths to connect all the dots. I was rooting for them every step of the way!

Readers will be impressed by the level of character evolution. Penny, in particular, goes through an earth-shattering transition when she is plucked from her comfortable life, suffers a tragedy, and then fights for survival in horrific conditions. The author masterfully illustrates the tremendous role hope plays in self-preservation, and readers will be inspired by the young woman’s strength and resourcefulness when all the odds are stacked against her.

As we get closer to spooky season, Jane Haltmaier’s The Secret of Spirit Lake is the perfect teen/YA mystery to cozy up with. Expertly paced with an intriguing premise, you may find it difficult to tear yourself away from this novel!

The Secret of Spirit Lake by Jane Haltmaier is a beautifully layered ghost story that blends historical mystery, emotional depth, and coming of age storytelling into a haunting and heartfelt narrative. By connecting two young girls across different eras through loss, courage, and an unfinished tragedy, the novel creates an atmosphere that feels both emotionally intimate and quietly suspenseful.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its dual timeline structure. The contrast between Amy’s modern struggles with displacement and Penny’s far more precarious existence in the past creates a compelling emotional balance that allows both stories to deepen one another naturally.

What makes the novel especially engaging is the emotional realism behind its supernatural elements. The ghost story aspect is not used purely for fear or spectacle, but as a vehicle for uncovering hidden trauma, unresolved grief, and forgotten injustice. That gives the mystery genuine emotional weight.

The Victorian house setting also adds tremendous atmosphere. The imagery of tower bedrooms, lingering whispers, and hidden histories surrounding Spirit Lake creates the perfect backdrop for a story centered on memory, haunting, and discovery. The setting itself feels alive with secrets waiting to surface.

Another particularly strong aspect is the focus on friendship and resilience. Both Amy and Penny are navigating loneliness and uncertainty in different ways, and the emotional connection between them gives the story warmth beneath its eerie surface. Their journeys feel grounded in emotional truth rather than simply plot mechanics.

The novel also appears well positioned for readers who enjoy middle grade and young adult crossover fiction that balances mystery with emotional depth. The combination of historical elements, supernatural intrigue, and character driven storytelling broadens its appeal considerably.

Readers who enjoy ghost stories with heart, historical mysteries, atmospheric fiction, and emotionally resonant coming of age narratives will likely find The Secret of Spirit Lake both captivating and memorable.

In Haltmaier’s deeply atmospheric novel, a teenage girl uncovers the truth behind a haunting that spans generations. When fourteen-year-old Amy moves to a quiet lakeside town, she struggles to adjust to a new life. Just as Amy begins to adjust, eerie occurrences in her tower bedroom suggest she is not alone. Years earlier, Penny, orphaned by tragedy and trapped in a cruel home, uncovers chilling secrets hidden within its walls. As past and present collide, Amy must uncover the truth to free a lingering spirit.

By alternating between timelines, Haltmaier highlights the difference between Amy’s modern challenges and Penny’s far more difficult circumstances. Amy’s emotional development feels realistic and gradual, while Penny’s storyline carries greater weight as it deals with trauma and survival. The shifting viewpoints build a fuller picture, connecting past events to present consequences. The novel’s use of the supernatural is particularly effective. Rather than relying on fear, the ghost story functions as a vehicle for uncovering buried truths and achieving emotional closure.

The mystery unfolds steadily, drawing readers into a layered investigation that blends personal growth with historical discovery. While some elements of the resolution may feel slightly convenient, they ultimately reinforce the novel’s hopeful tone and emphasis on healing. At its core, this is a meditation on belonging, resilience, and the ways unresolved histories continue to shape the present. Fans of quiet supernatural mysteries will find much to admire.

Amy's entire life gets uprooted when her parents move her and her family to a lake house in North Carolina. Amy hears rumors about a former resident of her house and whenever encounters a ghost, Amy and her friends are determined to find out the truth.

Wow, I loved this book! I was drawn in immediately and wanted to keep reading until I finished the book. For the first half(ish) of the book, the narrator switches from present day to decades ago. I thought this was brilliant as it kept me hooked and told both sides of this story really well. My only complaint (which is really more of a compliment to the author) is that I enjoyed Sally's and Penny's characters so much that I wanted to read more about them. Although, that really wouldn't have been conducive to the story and the mystery aspect. I just really enjoyed their pieces of the story.
The book was easy to read and well written. I did receive an advanced copy of the book and am voluntarily leaving a review. But this is definitely a book I will reread. I finished it a few hours ago and I'm still thinking about it, craving that intrigue and another good storyline. I'll have to be careful which book I choose next because this book was so good.
The entire premise was mysterious and interesting in all the right ways, without being overly dark. I loved the ending, but I won't say anything more so I won't spoil it.

I honestly didn’t expect to get so into this book, but it completely pulled me in. From the beginning, I found myself wanting to keep reading just to see what would happen next.
I really liked how the story went back and forth between Amy’s life in the present and Penny’s story from years ago. It was easy to follow and actually made the mystery more interesting because you slowly start to connect everything.
The setting was one of my favorite parts. The lake house and especially the tower room had that quiet, slightly creepy feeling that made everything more exciting, but it never felt too heavy or scary.
I also liked the characters more than I expected. Amy felt real, especially with how she struggled with the move, and I found Penny and Sally’s story really interesting and a bit emotional too. It made the mystery feel like it actually mattered.
Overall, it’s just a really good, easy read that keeps your attention the whole time. I didn’t want it to end, which says a lot. I’d definitely recommend it, whether you’re younger or just looking for a light mystery with a bit of heart.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I had medium to high hopes for this book and it exceeded my expectations. I have lived in one place my entire lift but always dreamed of being a new kid in an area with a room just like Amy's. I also have always been interested in the history of places and local legends. With that being said I quickly found myself pulled into the story and wanting the new girl group to figure out what happened to everyone.

My heart broke for Sally, Penny, Hal, Millie, Beth, and Nate. Many times I found myself wishing I could reach out and hug them all and offer comfort or ideas. While this book left me without questions to this particular local legend it did have my mind wondering to what really happened in Sally's past and even more so into what really happened to Penny and Beth.

Overall this book was a much needed escape from reality.

I really enjoyed this book. It pulled me in right from the start, and I kept wanting to read “just one more chapter.” The mystery and the ghost story were interesting without being too scary, and I liked how the story switched between the past and present. It was easy to follow and just a really fun read overall. I’d definitely recommend it!

I loved this young adult, ghost-story “lite”! What happens when you’re forced to uproot your life and move to a new town one summer…but not all of the previous inhabitants have left? Not scary but full of a mystery that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend for pre teens and middle school!

A fun read for young adults and older adults alike. Haltmaier has captured the angst of adolescence and set it against a murder mystery, with a taste of historical fiction. Highly recommend!
